Identifying coronary artery bypass grafting patients at high risk for adverse long-term prognosis using serial health-related quality of life assessments

Background: Patients who undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are known to be at a significant risk of experiencing long-term adverse events, emphasizing the importance of regular assessments. Evaluating health-related quality of life (HRQoL) serves as a direct method to gauge prognosis. Our objective is to ascertain the prognostic significance of consecutive HRQoL assessments using the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) derived from the Short-Form 36 (SF-36) health survey in CABG patients.Methods: The study population consisted of 433 patients who underwent isolated elective CABG at Fuwai Hospital between 2012 and 2013. SF-36 assessments were conducted during both the hospitalization period and follow-up. The primary endpoint of the study was all-cause mortality, while the secondary outcome was a composite measure including death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and repeat revascularization. We assessed the relationships between the PCS and MCS at baseline, as well as their changes during the first 6 months after the surgery (referred to as ΔPCS and ΔMCS, respectively), and the observed outcomes.Results: The patients were followed for an average of 6.28 years, during which 35 individuals (35/433, 8.1%) died. After adjusting for clinical variables, it was observed that baseline MCS scores (hazard ratio [HR] for a 1-standard deviation [SD] decrease, 1.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07–2.30) and ΔMCS (HR for a 1-SD decrease, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.09–2.56) were associated with all-cause mortality. However, baseline PCS scores and ΔPCS did not exhibit a significant relationship with all-cause mortality. Notably, there was a dose-response relationship observed between ΔMCS and the likelihood of all-cause mortality (HRs for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quartiles compared to the 1st quartile, 0.33, 0.45 and 0.11, respectively).Conclusions: Baseline MCS and changes in MCS were independent predictors for long-term mortality of CABG. Radar false alarm plots elimination based on multi-feature extraction and classification

Caused by the environment clutter,the radar false alarm plots are unavoidable.Suppressing false alarm points has always been a key issue in Radar plots procession.In this paper,a radar false alarm plots elimination method based on multi-feature extraction and classification is proposed to effectively eliminate false alarm plots.Firstly,the density based spatial clustering of applications with noise(DBSCAN)algorithm is used to cluster the radar echo data processed by constant false-alarm rate(CFAR).The multi-features including the scale features,time domain features and transform domain features are extracted.Secondly,a feature evaluation method combining pearson correlation coefficient(PCC)and entropy weight method(EWM)is proposed to evaluate interrelation among features,effective feature combination sets are selected as inputs of the classifier.Finally,False alarm plots classified as clutters are eliminated.The experimental results show that proposed method can eliminate about 90%false alarm plots with less target loss rate.

Paeoniflorin alleviates depression by inhibiting the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome via promoting mitochondrial autophagy

Depression ranks among the most common neuropsychiatric disorders globally.Current studies examining the roles of inflammation and mitochondrial autophagy in the antidepressant efficacy of paeoniflorin(PF)are sparse.This study aimed to elucidate PF’s antidepressant mechanism by promoting autophagy and inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation using chronic unpredictable mild stimulation(CUMS)-induced C57BL/6 mouse models in vivo and corticosterone(CORT)-induced HT22 cell models in vitro.Results demonstrated that PF enhanced the viability of HT22 cells following CORT exposure,restored mitochondrial membrane poten-tial(MMP),reduced reactive oxygen species accumulation,increased LC3 fluorescence intensity,and suppressed inflammatory cy-tokine secretion and inflammation activation.Additionally,PF ameliorated depressive behaviors induced by CUMS and improved damage in hippocampal neurons.It also reduced the expression of NLRP3,ASC,Caspase-1,IL-1β,and the assembly of the NLRP3 in-flammasome.Moreover,PF upregulated the expression of autophagy-related proteins in the hippocampus,facilitating the clearance of damaged mitochondria and enhancing autophagy.The role of autophagy in PF’s antidepressant effects was further confirmed through the use of the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine(3-MA),which reduced the efficacy of PF.In conclusion,PF effectively improved depressive behaviors in CUMS-induced mice and reduced NLRP3-mediated inflammation both in vivo and in vitro,likely via the in-duction of autophagy.

In a recent study published in Nature Medicine,Wang et al.developed an excellent framework called UniBind based on artificial intelligence(AI),which enables accurately predicting infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 variants and evolutionary trends of future viral variants.1 This computational method holds the possibility to not only serve as a valuable early-warning tool for monitoring potential pathogenic SARS-CoV-2 variants but also facilitate fundamental research on protein-protein interactions(PPIs).

Deterministic compartment models(CMs)and stochastic models,including stochastic CMs and agent-based models,are widely utilized in epidemic modeling.However,the relationship between CMs and their corresponding stochastic models is not well understood.The present study aimed to address this gap by conducting a comparative study using the susceptible,exposed,infectious,and recovered(SEIR)model and its extended CMs from the coronavirus disease 2019 modeling literature.We demonstrated the equivalence of the numerical solution of CMs using the Euler scheme and their stochastic counterparts through theoretical analysis and simulations.Based on this equivalence,we proposed an efficient model calibration method that could replicate the exact solution of CMs in the corresponding stochastic models through parameter adjustment.The advancement in calibration techniques enhanced the accuracy of stochastic modeling in capturing the dynamics of epidemics.However,it should be noted that discrete-time stochastic models cannot perfectly reproduce the exact solution of continuous-time CMs.Additionally,we proposed a new stochastic compartment and agent mixed model as an alternative to agent-based models for large-scale population simulations with a limited number of agents.This model offered a balance between computational efficiency and accuracy.The results of this research contributed to the comparison and unification of deterministic CMs and stochastic models in epidemic modeling.Furthermore,the results had implications for the development of hybrid models that integrated the strengths of both frameworks.Overall,the present study has provided valuable epidemic modeling techniques and their practical applications for understanding and controlling the spread of infectious diseases.

Proactive Resilience Enhancement of Power Systems with Link Transmission Model-based Dynamic Traffic Assignment Among Electric Vehicles

The rapid development of electric vehicles(EVs)is strengthening the bi-directional interactions between electric power networks(EPNs)and transportation networks(TNs)while providing opportunities to enhance the resilience of power systems towards extreme events.To quantify the temporal and spatial flexibility of EVs for charging and discharging,a novel dynamic traffic assignment(DTA)problem is proposed.The DTA problem is based on a link transmission model(LTM)with extended charging links,depicting the interaction between EVs and power systems.It models the charging rates as continuous variables by an energy boundary model.To consider the evacuation requirements of TNs and the uncertainties of traffic conditions,the DTA problem is extended to a two-stage distributionally robust version.It is further incorporated into a two-stage distributionally robust unit commitment problem to balance the enhancement of EPNs and the performance of TNs.The problem is reformulated into a mixed-integer linear programming problem and solved by off-the-shelf commercial solvers.Case studies are performed on two test networks.The effectiveness is verified by the numerical results,e.g.,reducing the load shedding amount without increasing the unmet traffic demand.

Integrated separation-electrochemical detection device based on wood column for online identification of enantiomer

Chiral chemicals have attracted significant interest in the pharmaceutical industry,yet the separation methods to get pure enantiomers from racemic mixture are still challenging.To date,the separation of enantiomers still mainly depends on chromatography using high-cost chiral stationary phases.Herein,wood channels were used as the handheld integrated device,and enantiomer separation was simultaneously detected using an electrochemical detector.In this method,a chiral UIO-66(L-UIO-66)modified enantiomer separation zone and carbonized wood based online detection zone are integrated along a single wood column.Based on the in situ separation results from the chronoamperometry data,the wood device shows excellent separation ability for a wide range of electrochemically active enantiomers,including 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine,amino acids,ascorbic acid,carnitine,and penicillamine with high chirality purity.The unbiased molecular dynamic simulations indicate that the excellent chiral recognition and separation are attributed to the different barriers from the bound states to the dissociated state of the enantiomers in the homochiral microenvironment of the framework.This integrated enantiomer separation-electrochemical detection device provides a novel,easy,and low-cost platform for the separation of pure enantiomer from racemic mixture.

The pneumonia caused by novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 infection in early December 2019,which was later named coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)by the World Health Organization(WHO),rapidly spread across the world.China has made extraordinary efforts to this unprecedented pandemic,put its response and control at a very high level of infectious disease management(Category B but with measures for Category A),given top priority to the people and their lives,and balanced the pandemic control and socio-economic development.After more than three years’fighting against this disease,China downgraded the management of COVID-19 to Category B infectious disease on January 8,2023 and the WHO declared the end of public health emergency on May 5,2023.However,the ending of pandemic does not mean that the disease is no longer a health threat.Experiences against COVID-19 from China and the whole world should be learned to prepare well for the future public health emergencies.This article gives a systematic review of the trajectory of COVID-19 development in China,summarizes the critical policy arrangements and provides evidence for the adjustment during policy making process,so as to share experiences with international community and contribute to the global health for all humanity.

Application of ultrasonic fatigue technology in very-high-cycle fatigue testing of aviation gas turbine engine blade materials:A review

The need for very-high-cycle fatigue(VHCF)testing up to 1010cycles of aviation gas turbine engine blade materials under combined mechanical loads and complex environments has encouraged the development of VHCF testing instrumentation and technology.This article begins with a comprehensive review of the existing available techniques that enable VHCF testing.Recent advances in ultrasonic fatigue testing(UFT)techniques are highlighted,containing their new capabilities and methods for single load,multiaxial load,variable amplitude fatigue,and combined cycle fatigue.New techniques for conducting UFT in high-temperature,humid environments,and corrosive environments are summarized.These developments in mechanical loading and environmental building techniques provide the possibility of laboratory construction for real service conditions of blade materials.New techniques that can be used for in situ monitoring of VHCF damage are summarized.Key issues in the UFT field are presented,and countermeasures are collated.Finally,the existing problems and future trends in the field are briefly described.
