Comparison of fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin in the treatment of hypercoagulability secondary to traumatic infection

Purpose: To compare the effects and side-effects of fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin in patients with hypercoagulability accompanied with traumatic infection. Methods: Thirty-six patients with post-traumatic infections in our hospital intensive care center were diagnosed with hypercoagulability from February 2012 to February 2013. These patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. In group F (18 patients), the patients were treated with fondaparinux sodium, 2.5 mg, 1/d for 11 d. In group L (18 patients), the patients were treated with low molecular weight heparin, 4100 U, 1/12 h for 11 d. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis, bleeding events and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and mortality of two groups after anticoagulation therapy were analyzed. Fibrinogen, D-dimer level and activity of antithrombin III were measured by the coagulation analyzer. Results: The incidence of deep vein thrombosis, MODS incidence and mortality were not significantly different between the two groups. The rate of bleeding evens in group F was lower than group L ( p 0.05). D-dimer was significantly decreased after anticoagulant therapy for 5 d ( p 0.05). Conclusion: Fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin can effectively improve coagulopathy in patients with traumatic infection. Compared with low molecular weight heparin, fondaparinux sodium may reduce the risk of bleeding events in patients with hypercoagulability accompanied by traumatic infection.

Numerical simulation and scaling analysis of elasticity-induced lift force in a viscoelastic fluid between confining surfaces

How to accurately characterize the lift force on the particles near the solid surfaces is an ongoing challenge in fluid mechanics and microfluidic techniques, especially in a complex system with viscoelastic fluid or/and soft surface that is commonly encountered in a biological system. The motions of the particles in vicinity of a surface can be simplified to be a rigid cylinder surrounded by the viscoelastic fluid moving along a substrate which can be rigid or soft according to different cases. In such an inertial free system with a wide range of Weissenberg number (Wi < 5.00, representing the ratio of the elastic force to the viscous force), firstly we numerically evaluate the influence of the systematic parameters, including the polymer viscosity, the geometry and Wi, on the net normal force for a cylinder closely moving along a rigid substrate, and the elasticity-induced lift force in a scaled form. It is shown that a strong shear arises in the viscoelastic confinement between the moving cylinder and the rigid substrate, it leads to the asymmetry of the first normal stress distribution around the cylinder, and thus the lift force. Then, the influence of a soft substrate on the lift force is considered, and we find that the lift force induced by the viscoelastic fluid always dominates in magnitude over that induced by the soft substrate deformation. This work provides a reliable scaling that can be utilized to quantify the elasticity-induced lift force on the particles in a viscoelastic system, such as the micro- and nanofluidic systems in biological applications.

Ultrafast optical nonlinearities of N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF)are studied by using polarized light at 400 nm.Both nonlinear refraction(NLR)and stimulated Rayleigh-wing scattering(SRWS)depend on the polarization state of incident beam,while two-photon absorption(TPA)changes negligibly with polarization state.The polarization dependence of SRWS originates from that of NLR via self-focusing effect.Third-order susceptibility elements of DMF were determined,and a method to distinguish the multi-photon absorption signal from SRWS in Z-scan is provided.These results are helpful for the nonlinear optical research of the novel materials dissolved in DMF.

Membrane technology is of particular significance for the sustainable development of society owing to its potential capacity to tackle the energy shortage and environmental pollution.Membrane materials are the core part of membrane technology.Researchers have always been pursuing predictable structures of advanced membrane materials,which provides a possibility to fully unlock the potential of membranes.Covalent organic frameworks(COFs),with the advantage of controllable pore microenvironment,are considered to be promising candidates to achieve this design concept.The customizable function of COF membranes through pore engineering does well in the enhancement of selective permeability performance,which offers COF membranes with great application potentials in separation and transportation fields.In this context,COF-based membranes have been developed rapidly in recent years.Herein,we present a brief overview on the strategies developed for pore engineering of COF membranes in recent years,including skeleton engineering,pore surface engineering,host-guest chemistry and membrane fabrication.Moreover,the features of transmission or separation of molecules/ions based on COF membranes and corresponding applications are also introduced.In the last part,the challenges and prospects of the development of COF membranes are discussed.

Optimal design of linear switched reluctance motor for sea wave power generation

The switchless reluctance motor’s non-permanent magnet structure design ensures its high reliability in the marine environment;thus,it is a feasible solution for the generator of a sea wave power generation system.However,the corresponding thrust density and efficiency remain insufficient.This study focused on a new type of flat linear switched reluctance motor(LSRM),using the finite element software to establish a structural model,and optimized the design with the goal of improving the efficiency and energy density.The entropy method was adopted for sensitivity stratification to objectively select weights to avoid the influence of subjectively selected different proportional weights on the optimization results.Based on the entropy method,the sensitivity of different structural parameters was stratified,and the simulated annealing algorithm,response surface method,and single parameter scanning method were combined for optimization.Finally,the optimal structural size parameters of the motor were determined.Based on the two-dimensional finite element method,to simulate the electromagnetic performance of the reluctance motor under different operating conditions,such as thrust,loss,and efficiency,changes in motor performance before and after optimization were compared to verify the high power generation efficiency and energy density of the optimized linear motor.

In this paper,observer-based control for fractional-order singular systems with orderα(0<α<1)and input delay is studied.On the basis of the Smith predictor and approximation error,the system with input delay is approximately equivalent to the system without input delay.Furthermore,based on the linear matrix inequality(LMI)technique,the necessary and sufficient condition of observer-based control is proposed.Since the condition is a nonstrict LMI,including the equality constraint,it will lead to some trouble when solving problems using toolbox.Thus,the strict LMI-based condition is improved in the paper.Finally,a numerical example and a direct current motor example are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the strict LMI-based condition.

Flow control using surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge(DBD)plasma actuators driven by a sinusoidal alternating-current power supply has gained significant attention from the aeronautic industry.The induced flow field of the plasma actuator,with the starting vortex in the wall jet,plays an important role in flow control.However,the energy consumed for producing the induced flow field is only a small fraction of the total energy utilized by the plasma actuator,and most of the total energy is used in gas heating and dielectric heating.Therefore,an in-depth analysis of the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator is the key to develop its potential capability further.In addition,compared with the investigation on the aerodynamic characteristics of the plasma actuator,there is a relative lack of detail in the study of its thermal characteristics.Understanding the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator is of great interest for providing a deeper insight into the underlying working principles,advancing its numerical simulation model,prolonging its life,and achieving several potential engineering applications,such as antiicing and deicing.The present paper reviews the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator,summarizes the influence of the dielectric film and actuation parameters on heating,and discusses the formation and transfer mechanism of the induced heating based on the discharge regimes of the plasma actuator in one cycle.

An Accurate Near-Field Distance Estimation Differential Algorithm

The triangular geometry is the basis of near field array accurate distance estimation algorithms.The Fisher expression of traditional distance estimation is derived by utilizing the Taylor series. To improve convergence rate and estimation accuracy, a novel iterative distance estimation algorithm is proposed with differential equations based on the triangular geometry. Firstly, its convergence performance is analysed in detail. Secondly,the selection of the initial value and the number of iterations are respectively studied. Thirdly, compared with the traditional estimation algorithms by utilizing the Fisher approximation, the proposed algorithm has a higher convergence rate and estimation accuracy. Moreover, its pseudocode is presented. Finally, the experiment results and performance analysis are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Fractionation of Polyolefin Elastomer by a Modified SSA Technique

As an important part of semicrystalline polymer materials,polyolefin elastomers are widely used,and the in-depth analysis of their molecular chain structure information is of great significance to promote their rapid development.We show in this work an effort in characterizing a commercial polyolefin elastomer of ethylene/1-octene copolymer by a modified successive self-nucleation and annealing(SSA)technique.A small amount of linear polyethylene was blended with the ethylene/1-octene copolymer serving as nucleation agent during SSA.It turned out that a tiny fraction of linear polyethylene can significantly promote the crystallization of the copolymer during cooling from different annealing temperatures and increase the melting temperature of the fractions so that providing apparent methylene sequence length much closer to the real value than obtained by traditional SSA technique.
