Natural radionuclides are powerful tools for understanding the sources and fate of suspended particulate matter(SPM).Particulate matter with different particle sizes behaves differently with respect to adsorption and desorption.We analyzed the activi-ties and distribution characteristics of multiple natural radionuclides(238U,226Ra,40K,228Ra,7Be and 210Pbex)on size-fractionated SPM at the Lijin Hydrographic Station(Huanghe or Yellow River)every month over a one-year period.Results showed that medium silt(16–32µm)was the main component.As expected,the activity of each radionuclide decreased with an increase of particle size.We examined the sources of SPM with different particle sizes using activity ratios of 226Ra/238U,228Ra/226Ra,40K/238U and 7Be/210Pbex,and concluded that SPM with different particle sizes originated from different sources.Our results indicate that fine SPM(32µm)was mainly derived from resuspension of riverbed sediment.During high runoff periods,the concentration of SPM increased significantly,and the pro-portion of fine particles originating upstream increased.Naturally occurring radioactive isotopes,especially on size-fractionated par-ticles,are therefore seen as useful tracers to understand the sources and behaviors of riverine particles transported from land to sea.

More Than Lightening:A Self-Supervised Low-Light Image Enhancement Method Capable for Multiple Degradations

Low-light images suffer from low quality due to poor lighting conditions,noise pollution,and improper settings of cameras.To enhance low-light images,most existing methods rely on normal-light images for guidance but the collection of suitable normal-light images is difficult.In contrast,a self-supervised method breaks free from the reliance on normal-light data,resulting in more convenience and better generalization.Existing self-supervised methods primarily focus on illumination adjustment and design pixel-based adjustment methods,resulting in remnants of other degradations,uneven brightness and artifacts.In response,this paper proposes a self-supervised enhancement method,termed as SLIE.It can handle multiple degradations including illumination attenuation,noise pollution,and color shift,all in a self-supervised manner.Illumination attenuation is estimated based on physical principles and local neighborhood information.The removal and correction of noise and color shift removal are solely realized with noisy images and images with color shifts.Finally,the comprehensive and fully self-supervised approach can achieve better adaptability and generalization.It is applicable to various low light conditions,and can reproduce the original color of scenes in natural light.Extensive experiments conducted on four public datasets demonstrate the superiority of SLIE to thirteen state-of-the-art methods.Our code is available at https://***/hanna-xu/SLIE.

Graphitic carbon nitride(g‐C_(3)N_(4))is a highly recognized two‐dimensional semiconductor material known for its exceptional chemical and physical stability,environmental friendliness,and pollution‐free advantages.These remarkable properties have sparked extensive research in the field of energy storage.This review paper presents the latest advances in the utilization of g‐C_(3)N_(4)in various energy storage technologies,including lithium‐ion batteries,lithium‐sulfur batteries,sodium‐ion batteries,potassium‐ion batteries,and supercapacitors.One of the key strengths of g‐C_(3)N_(4)lies in its simple preparation process along with the ease of optimizing its material structure.It possesses abundant amino and Lewis basic groups,as well as a high density of nitrogen,enabling efficient charge transfer and electrolyte solution penetration.Moreover,the graphite‐like layered structure and the presence of largeπbonds in g‐C_(3)N_(4)contribute to its versatility in preparing multifunctional materials with different dimensions,element and group doping,and conjugated systems.These characteristics open up possibilities for expanding its application in energy storage devices.This article comprehensively reviews the research progress on g‐C_(3)N_(4)in energy storage and highlights its potential for future applications in this field.By exploring the advantages and unique features of g‐C_(3)N_(4),this paper provides valuable insights into harnessing the full potential of this material for energy storage applications.

Hazardous waste stream needs to be managed so as not to exceed stock-and rate-limited properties of its recipient ecosystems.The co-pyrolysis of Chinese medicine residue(CMR)and textile dyeing sludge(TDS)and its bio-oil,biochar,and ash quality and quantity were characterized as a function of the immersion of K_(2)CO_(3),atmosphere type,blend ratio,and temperature.Compared to the mono-pyrolysis of TDS,its co-pyrolysis performance with CMR(the comprehensive performance index(CPI))significantly improved by 33.9%in the N_(2)atmosphere and 33.2%in the CO_(2)atmosphere.The impregnation catalyzed the co-pyrolysis at 370℃,reduced its activation energy by 77.3 kJ/mol in the N_(2)atmosphere and 134.6 kJ/mol in the CO_(2)atmosphere,and enriched the degree of coke gasification by 44.25%in the CO_(2)atmosphere.The impregnation increased the decomposition rate of the co-pyrolysis by weakening the bond energy of fatty side chains and bridge bonds,its catalytic and secondary products,and its bio-oil yield by 66.19%.Its bio-oils mainly contained olefins,aromatic structural substances,and alcohols.The immersion of K_(2)CO_(3)improved the aromaticity of the copyrolytic biochars and reduced the contact between K and Si which made it convenient for Mg to react with SiO_(2)to form magnesium-silicate.The co-pyrolytic biochar surfaces mainly included-OH,-CH_(2),C=C,and Si-O-Si.The main phases in the co-pyrolytic ash included Ca_(5)(PO_(4))_(3)(OH),Al_(2)O_(3),and magnesium-silicate.

Selective photocatalytic oxidation of methane to C1 oxygenates by regulating sizes and facets over Au/ZnO

Photocatalytic oxidation of methane to value-added chemicals is a promising process under mild conditions,nevertheless confronting great challenges in efficiently activating C-H bonds and inhibiting over-oxidation.Herein,we propose a comprehensive strategy for the selective generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)by regulating the sizes and facets of Au nanoparticles loaded on ZnO.For photocatalytic methane oxidation at ambient temperature,a high oxygenates yield of 36.4 mmol·g^(-1)·h^(-1) with a nearly 100%selectivity has been achieved over the optimized 1.0%Au/ZnO-9.6(1%Au with(111)facet and 9.6 nm size on ZnO)photocatalyst,exceeding most reported literatures.Mechanism investigations reveal that 1.0%Au/ZnO-9.6 with the medium size and Au(111)facet guarantees the favourable formation of superoxide radicals(·OOH)through mild oxygen reduction,ultimately leading to excellent photocatalytic methane oxidation performance.This work provides some guidance for the delicate design of photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic methane oxidation and oxygen utilization.

Functional nanoemulsions: Controllable low-energy nanoemulsification and advanced biomedical application

Nanoemulsions are widely used as advanced pharmaceutical delivery systems in biomedical field, due to their high encapsulation efficiency and good therapy efficacy.Nanoemulsification techniques that produce nanoemulsions with controllable sizes and compositions are promising for creating advanced nanoemulsion systems for pharmaceutical delivery.This review summarizes recent advances on low-energy emulsification techniques for producing nanoemulsions, and the use of these nanoemulsions as advanced pharmaceutical delivery systems and as templates to create drug-loaded functional particles for biomedical application.First, nanoemulsification techniques that utilize elaborate interfacial physics/chemistry and micro-/nano-fluidics, featured with relatively-low energy input, to produce nanoemulsions with controllable sizes and compositions, are introduced.Uses of these nanoemulsions to create nanoemulsionincorporated milli-particles, drug-loaded nanoparticles and nanoparticle-incorporated microparticles with sizes ranging from several millimeters to sub-10 nm are emphasized.Flexible and efficient use of the nanoemulsions, functional nanoparticles and milli-/micro-particles integrated with nanoemulsions or nanoparticles for advanced pharmaceutical delivery in biomedical field are highlighted, with focus on how the interplay between their sizes and compositions achieve desired pharmaceutical-delivery performances.Finally, perspectives on further advances on the controllable production of nanoemulsions are provided.

Resistance index and browning mechanism of apple peel under high temperature stress

Apples are one of the most important economic crops worldwide.Because of global warming and an aggravation of environmental,abnormally high temperatures occur frequently in fruit-growing season and seriously affect normal fruit growth and reduce fruit quality and yield.We took five-year-old Ruixue’(Qinfu 1×Pink Lady;CNA20151469.1) fruits as test materials,and the ambient temperature during fruit development was monitored.The results showed that during the fruit-growing season,especially during the rapid growth stage (July to August),the maximum daily temperature exceeded 30℃ and lasted for more than 40 days.To determine the effects of high temperature stress on the apple fruit resistance,we treated expanding,veraison,and maturity-period fruits at different temperatures.It was found that the fruits of the expanding period showed strong resistance to high temperature stress,whereas during veraison and maturity,fruit resistance to high temperature stress decreased,and the fruit peel browning phenotype appeared.Meanwhile,the content of malonaldehyde (MDA),hydrogen peroxide (H_(2)O_(2)),and superoxide anion (O._(2)^(-)) in the peel gradually increased with increasing temperature.The content of total phenols,flavanol,and flavonoids in the peel decreased substantially at 45℃.Moreover,it was found that polyphenol oxidase gene (MdPPO1) was most sensitive to high temperature stress in apple.Furthermore,transient and stable MdPPO1 overexpression significantly promoted peel browning.The transgenic materials were more sensitive to high temperatures,and browning was more severe compared to non-genetically modified organism (WT).Stable MdPPO1 knockout calli obtained via clustered regularly interspersed short palindromic repeats (CRISPR/Cas9) gene knockout technology reduced the browning phenotype,and the resultant fruits were not sensitive to the effects of high temperature stress.Thus,MdPPO1 expression may be a key factor of high temperature-related changes observed in the browning phenotype that provides a scientific theoreti

Identification, pathogenicity, and fungicide sensitivity of Eutiarosporella dactylidis associated with leaf blight on maize in China

Maize(Zea mays L.) is an economically vital grain crop that is cultivated worldwide. In 2011, a maize foliar disease was detected in Lingtai and Lintao counties in Gansu Province, China. The characteristic signs and symptoms of this disease include irregular chlorotic lesions on the tips and edges of infected leaves and black punctate fruiting bodies in dead leaf tissues. Given favourable environmental conditions, this disease spread to areas surrounding Gansu. In this study, infected leaves were collected from Gansu and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region between 2018and 2020 to identify the disease-causing pathogen. Based on morphological features, pathogenicity tests, and multilocus phylogenetic analysis involving internal transcribed spacer(ITS), 18S small subunit rDNA(SSU), 28S large subunit rDNA(LSU), translation elongation factor 1-alpha(TEF), and β-tubulin(TUB) sequences, Eutiarosporella dactylidis was identified as the causative pathogen of this newly discovered leaf blight. Furthermore, an in vitro bioassay was conducted on representative strains using six fungicides, and both fludioxonil and carbendazim were found to significantly inhibit the mycelial growth of E. dactylidis. The results of this study provide a reference for the detection and management of Eutiarosporella leaf blight.

Secondary air pollutants,originating from gaseous pollutants and primary particulate matter emitted by natural sources and human activities,undergo complex atmospheric chemical reactions and multiphase processes.Secondary gaseous pollutants represented by ozone and secondary particulate matter,including sulfates,nitrates,ammonium salts,and secondary organic aerosols,are formed in the atmosphere,affecting air quality and human health.This paper summarizes the formation pathways and mechanisms of important atmospheric secondary pollutants.Meanwhile,different secondary pollutants’toxicological effects and corresponding health risks are evaluated.Studies have shown that secondary pollutants are generally more toxic than primary ones.However,due to their diverse source and complex generation mechanism,the study of the toxicological effects of secondary pollutants is still in its early stages.Therefore,this paper first introduces the formation mechanism of secondary gaseous pollutants and focuses mainly on ozone’s toxicological effects.In terms of particulate matter,secondary inorganic and organic particulate matters are summarized separately,then the contribution and toxicological effects of secondary components formed from primary carbonaceous aerosols are discussed.Finally,secondary pollutants generated in the indoor environment are briefly introduced.Overall,a comprehensive review of secondary air pollutants may shed light on the future toxicological and health effects research of secondary air pollutants.
