FEM analyses for influences of stress corrosion and pressure solution on THM coupling in dual-porosity rock mass

With the models of stress corrosion and pressure solution, by Yasuhara et al., two computation conditions were designed for a hypothetical nuclear waste repository in an unsaturated dual-porosity rock mass: (i) the fracture apertures are changed with the stress corrosion and pressure solution (the porosity of rock matrix is also a function of stress); (ii) the fracture apertures and the porosity of rock matrix are constants. Then the corresponding two-dimensional FEM analyses for the coupled thermohydro-mechanical processes were carried out, and the states of temperatures, rates and magnitudes of aperture closure, pore pressures, flow velocities and stresses in the rock mass were investigated. The results show the followings: The aperture closure rates caused by stress corrosion are almost six orders higher than those caused by pressure solution, and the two kinds of closure rates climb up, then decline, furthermore tend towards stability; the fracture apertures decrease from the original value and tend towards the residual value, and the contact-area ratios of asperities increase also from the original value and tend towards the nominal value; when the effects of stress corrosion and pressure solution are considered, the negative fracture pressures in near field rise very highly; the differences between the magnitudes and distributions of stresses within the rock mass in two calculation cases are very small.

Surface-tailored PtPdCu ultrathin nanowires as advanced electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation and oxygen reduction reaction in direct ethanol fuel cell

The development of advanced electrocatalysts for efficient catalyzing ethanol oxidation reaction(EOR)and oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) is significant for direct ethanol fuel cells(DEFCs).However,in many previous studies,the major difficulties including lower utilization efficiency and weaker anti-CO-poison ability of Pt hamper the practical testing of such DEFCs,Herein,ternary Pt22Pd27C51 ultrathin(~5 nm)NWs are fabricated via a facile surfactant-free *** surface and electronic structures of Pt22Pd27Cu51 NWs are further tailored via acid-etching *** resulted PtPdCu NWs with an optimal atomic Pt/Pd/Cu ratio of 36:41:23 display excellent specific activities towards EOR(4.38 mA/cm^(2))and ORR(1.16 mA/cm^(2)),which are 19.8-and 5.7-folds larger than that of Pt/C,respectively.A singlecell was fabricated using Pt36Pd41Cu23 NWs as electrocatalyst in both anode and cathode with Pt loading of 1.2 mgpt/cm^(2).The power density measured at 80 ℃ is 21.7 mW/cm^(2),which is ~3.9 folds enhancement relative to that fabricated by using Pt/C(2 mgPt/cm^(2)).The enhanced catalytic performance of Pt36Pd41Cu23NWs could be attributed to that synergistic effect between Pt,Pd and Cu enhances CO anti-poisoning ability and promotes the C-C bond *** work provides a promising strategy for developing efficient electrocatalysts for DEFCs.

Pilot Program Sheds Light on Improved Services

This article reports the success of the State Family Planning Commission in controlling China's population through the proposed "two reorientations" approaches: 1) to reorient from focusing on birth control alone to a combination of population control and socioeconomic development;2) to reorient from administrative measures only to a combination of economic, as well as administrative measures, publicity, services and management. Six counties (districts) were designated as the first group of localities experimenting with quality of care in family planning in 1995. Over the past 4 years, the group achieved encouraging results in improving management of and services in family planning, particularly in areas such as reproductive health, protection of women and children's interests and reduction of fertility rate. As a result, more than 600 counties (districts) nationwide have joined the pilot program by October 1999. In addition, the initiative has drawn widespread support from the international community. These organizations include the Ford Foundation, the Population Council and the University of Michigan. Consequently, the outside world has gained a better understanding of the family planning program in China.

A wireless-communication-based measurement of gas pressure with capsule-slime sealing device

To solve the existing problems of imperfect sealing and the inaccurate measurement of gas pressure in traditional sealing,the present study builds a new model of capsule-slime sealing device based on wireless pressure *** new sealing device is mainly composed of two sets of capsules,a capsule connecting piece and a slime part,measures the pressure through the wireless communication technology,and seals through chemical reaction in the capsule,which generates gas to expand the capsule and extrude the pre-stored *** methods of extruding pre-stored slime are proposed:in the first method,transverse force is generated by the expansion of the capsules at both ends,pushing the capsules toward the middle through the chute and squeezing the pre-stored slime out;in the second,high-pressure gas generated in the capsules is led into the expansion tube,which is inserted into the storage tube,squeezing it and letting the slime out to complete the sealing *** the research studies the effect of sealing under the condition of drilling with the structure of slime storage *** results indicate that the maximum standing time of slime wrapped in metal net is 2 h,instead of the expected 10 d,failing to meet the sealing *** the slime viscosity is 1200–3000 m Paás in the structure of slime storage tube,the best viscosity of slime is achieved and can simulate sealing the drilling hole(5–4,4–2.36,2.36–1.18,1.18–0.15 mm in diameter),as well as the gap caused by mixed sand accumulation.

Theoretical and numerical simulation of critical gas supply of refuge chamber

The personnel in refuge chamber absorb O_2 and exhale CO_2 all the time. Supplying O_2 and removing CO_2 are the basic function of refuge chamber. After disaster occurs, the supply of the compressed air or oxygen for personnel in refuge chamber is limited. Thus, how to effectively use the compressed air and oxygen and try to improve the time of supply has a great significance. Supplying more oxygen will result in waste, while supplying less oxygen will cause its concentration to be lower, and harm life safety. This research uses the theoretical calculation and numerical simulation, finds critical gas supply for refuge chamber, and illuminates the change law of gas concentration with critical gas supply in refuge chamber,which provides theoretical guidance for effective use of compressed air and oxygen in refuge chamber.

Destruction mechanism of gas explosion to ventilation facilities and automatic recovery technology

In order to overcome the heavy casualties caused by gas explosion, we verified the propagation law of shock wave in pipeline and the overpressure distribution of gas explosion by similar experiments according to the analyses of reasons for casualty and ventilation system model destroyed by gas explosion in the mining face. We summarized the gas composition after the explosion and its danger, analyzed the effects of the gas explosion shock wave to ventilation system and facilities and the laws of toxic gas spread and diffusion in the ventilation network after the explosion. We presented a technical proposal to control the smoke and recover the ventilation system after a gas explosion and developed a reserve air door and control system that were embed in the lane, and could close automatically in conditions of no pressure and electricity. The results showed that the reserve air door normally opened and could close automatically controlling the smoke flow and resuming the ventilation system when the gas explosion shock wave destroyed the original shutting air door which resulted in the air short circuit.

Facilitated by reactive oxygen species(ROS)-involved therapies,tumor cells undergo immunogenic cell death(ICD)to stimulate long-term immunity ***,it is hard to trigger abundant and large-scale ICD for satisfactory cancer ***,a multifunctional sonosensitizer that consists of Au single atoms and clusters anchored on TiO_(2)nanosheets(named Au_(S/C)-TiO_(2))is reported for augmented sonodynamic therapy(SDT)and glucose depletion,which ultimately induce robust ICD due to the improved ROS generation and strong endoplasmic reticulum(ER)*** synergy effect between Au cluster/single atom with TiO_(2)nanosheets intensifies apoptosis and ICD pathways to inhibit 80%of tumor cells through in vivo ***,immune cells in vivo analyses verify the effectiveness of Au_(S/C)-TiO_(2)sonosensitizer towards the induction of antitumor *** study thus reveals that simultaneous presence of ROS generation and strong ER stress can efficiently evoke a strong ICD-mediated immune response.

An experimental study of the effect of ionic liquids on the low temperature oxidation of coal

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) and constant heating rate experiments were performed to study the low temperature oxidation of coal treated by an ionic liquid,1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium *** inerting effect of the ionic liquid toward the low temperature oxidation process is *** results show that:(1) The hydroxyl content associated with hydrogen bonds,the aliphatic methyl content,the methylene group content,and the ether oxygen bond content are reduced in the treated *** the same time the content of aromatic C@C bonds is constant but these chemical bonds weaken and some substituted aromatic hydrocarbon content increases while other types *** demonstrates that(AMIm)Cl dissolves and destroys the coal surface microstructure;(2) The oxygen consumption of the treated coal is less than what is seen in raw *** CO,CO 2,C 2 H 4,and C 2 H 6 content from the treated coal is reduced compared to the untreated coal;(3) The apparent activation energy for the oxidizing reaction is different in the treated and raw ***-structural changes and macroscopic gas production allow us to conclude that(AMIm)Cl can effectively inhibit low temperature oxidation of coal.

Effects of NO_(2) and SO_(2) on the secondary organic aerosol formation fromβ-pinene photooxidation

Elucidating the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on the photooxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds is crucial to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of secondary organic aerosol(SOA)***,the impacts of NO_(2)and SO_(2)on SOA formation from the photooxidation of a representative monoterpene,β-pinene,were investigated by a number of laboratory *** results indicated NO_(2)enhanced the SOA mass concentrations and particle number concentrations under both low and highβ-pinene *** could be rationalized that the increased O_(3)concentrations upon the NO_(x)photolysis was helpful for the generation of more amounts of O_(3)-oxidized products,which accelerated the SOA nucleation and *** with NO_(2),the promotion of the SOA yield by SO_(2)was mainly reflected in the increase of mass concentration,which might be due to the elimination of the newly formed particles by the initially formed *** observed low oxidation degree of SOA might be attributed to the fast growth of SOA,resulting in the uptake of less oxygenated gas-phase species onto the particle *** present findings have important implications for SOA formation affected by anthropogenic–biogenic interactions in the ambient atmosphere.
