The influence of climate change on vegetation phenology is a heated issue in current climate change *** used GIMMS-3g NDVI data to detect the spatio-temporal dynamics of the start of the growing season(SGS) over the Tibetan Plateau(TP) from 1982 to 2.1. and to analyze its relationship with temperature and *** significant trend was observed in the SGS at the regional scale during the study period(R^2 = 0.03,P = 0.352).However,there were three time periods(1982.1.99,1999-2008 and 2008-2.1.) with identifiable,distinctly different *** with a significant advancing trend were mainly scattered throughout the humid and semi-humid areas,whereas the regions with a significant delaying trend were mostly distributed throughout the semi-arid *** analysis showed that the response of the SGS to climate change varies *** SGS was significantly correlated with the spring temperature and the start of the thermal growth season(STGS) in the relatively humid *** increasing aridity,theimportance of the spring temperature for the SGS gradually ***,the influences of precipitation and winter temperature on the SGS were complicated across the plateau.

Geo-engineered buffer capacity of two-layered absorbing system under the impact of rock avalanches based on Discrete Element Method

Many rock avalanches were triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008 in southwest china. Protection galleries covered with a single soil layer are usually used to protect against rockfall. Since one-layer protection galleries do not have sufficient buffer capacity, a two-layered absorbing system has been designed. This study aims to find whether an expanded poly-styrol （EPS） cushion, which is used in the soil-covered protection galleries for shock absorption, could be positioned under dynamic loadings. The dynamic impacts of the two-layered absorbing system under the conditions of rock avalanches are numerically simulated through a 2D discrete dement method. By selecting reasonable parameters, a series of numerical experiments were conducted to find the best combination for the two- layered absorbing system. The values of the EPS layer area as a percentage of the total area were set as 0% （Sl）, 22~ （S2）, and 70% （$3）. 22~ of the area of the EPS layer was found to be a reasonable value, and experiments were conducted to find the best position of the EPS layer in the two-layered absorbing system. The numerical results yield useful conclusions regarding the interaction between the impacting avalanches and the two-layered absorbing system. The soil layer can absorb the shock energy effectively and S2 （0.4-m thick EPS cushion covered with soil layer） is the most efficient combination, which can reduce the impact force, compared with the other combinations.

Carbon sequestration of plantation in Beijing-Tianjin sand source areas

The Beijing-Tianjin Sand Source Control Project(BTSSCP), a national ecological restoration project, was launched to construct an ecological protection system in the Beijing-Tianjin sand source areas to reduce dust hazards. The carbon sequestration dynamics can be used to assess the ecological effects of an ecological restoration project. Here, we conducted vegetation and soil study to assess the carbon sequestration in the plantations with 10 years old stands in Beijing-Tianjin sand source areas. The results at the site scales indicated that the average net increase of plantation ecosystem carbon stock was 33.8 Mg C ha^(-1), with an annual increase rate of 3.38 Mg C ha^(-1) yr^(-1). The average net increase of carbon varied among regions, vegetation types, and forest management activities. Soil bulk density in the top soil decreased slightly after 10-year implementation of the project. Coniferous forests and shrubs are suitable plant species for sand source *** restoration in the plantations is a practical and feasible and promising approach for enhancing ecosystem carbon sequestration potential.

Landslide susceptibility assessment of the region affected by the 25 April 2.1. Gorkha earthquake of Nepal

Nepal was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25^(th) April,*** main shock and many large aftershocks generated a large number of coseismic landslips in central *** have developed a landslide susceptibility map of the affected region based on the coseismic landslides collected from remotely sensed data and fieldwork,using bivariate statistical model with different landslide causative *** the investigation,it is observed that most of the coseismic landslides are independent of previous *** of 3,716 mapped landslides,we used 80% of them to develop a susceptibility map and the remaining 20% were taken for validating the model.A total of 11 different landslide-influencing parameters were *** include slope gradient,slope aspect,plan curvature,elevation,relative relief,Peak Ground Acceleration(PGA),distance from epicenters of the mainshock and major aftershocks,lithology,distance of the landslide from the fault,fold,and drainage *** success rate of 87.66% and the prediction rate of86.87% indicate that the model is in good agreement between the developed susceptibility map and theexisting landslides ***,lithology,slope angle and elevation have played a major role in triggering the coseismic mass *** susceptibility map can be used for relocating the people in the affected regions as well as for future land development.

Monitoring of Land-Cover Dynamic Change in Lancangjiang River Cascaded Hydropower Area

The analysis of the 3 stages＇（1988,1996,2000） variation of land-cover is performed according to Thematic Mapper （TM） and Enhancement Thematic Mapper（ETM） satellite image by combining ground GIS database with GPS field collected data in the area of Xiaowan-Dachaoshan Reservoirs of Lancangjiang River cascaded Hydropower Area. Consequently, the land-cover is divided into five subclasses, namely water, paddy field and wetland, bare dryland and sparse shrub, secondary forest and density forest. The result showed that the areas of bare land, upland and secondary forest decreased in 1988-1996, whereas from 1996 to 2000, water body and density forest keep invariability while the areas of paddy field and wetland, bare dryland and sparse scrub increasing and the area of secondary forest decrease; Features of reciprocal transformation between density forest and other type of land-cover had two points, i.e. secondary forest, bare dryland and sparse shrub converted to density forest; and density forest converted to secondary forest and paddy field and wetland. It reflects the dynamic variation of density forest; the area which slope less than 8° and greater than 15° shows bigger variation, however, less change in 8°-15°.

Accurate radial velocity determinations of optical emission lines(i.e.,[NⅡ]λλ6548,6584,Hαand[SⅡ]λλ6717,6731)are very important for investigating the kinematic and dynamic properties of *** second stage survey program of Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope(LAMOST)has started a sub-survey of nebulae(MRS-N)which will spectroscopically observe the optical emission lines of a large sample of nebulae near the Galactic *** now,15 MRS-N plates have been observed from September 2.1. to june *** on fitting the sky emission lines in the red band spectra of MRS-N,we investigate the precision of wavelength calibration and find there are systematic deviations of radial velocities(RVs)from~0.2 to 4 km s^(-1) for different *** for the plates obtained in March 2.1.,the systematic deviations of RVs can be as large as~4 km s^(-1),which then go down to~0.2-0.5 kms^(-1) at the end of 2.1. and January *** RV calibration function is proposed for these MRS-N plates,which can simultaneously and successfully calibrate the systematic deviations and improve the precision of RVs.

Effect of dry density on the liquefaction behaviour of Quaternary silt

Quaternary silt is widely distributed in china and easily liquefies during earthquakes. To identify the influence of the dry density on the liquefaction behaviour of Quaternary silt, 40 cyclic triaxial liquefaction tests were performed on loose silt(dry density rd=1.460 g/cm^3) and dense silt(rd=1.586 g/cm^3) under different cyclic stress ratios(CSRs) to obtain liquefaction assessment criteria, determine the liquefaction resistance, improve the excess pore water pressure(EPWP) growth model and clarify the relationship between the shear modulus and damping ratio. The results indicate that the initial liquefaction assessment criteria for the loose and dense silts are a double-amplitude axial strain of 5% and an EPWP ratio of 1. The increase in the anti-liquefaction ability for the dense silt is more significant under lower confining pressures. The CSR of loose silt falls well within the results of the sandy silt and Fraser River silt, and the dense silt exhibits a higher liquefaction resistance than the sand-silt mixture. The relationships between the CSR and loading cycles were obtained at a failure strain of 1%. The EPWP development in the dense and loose silts complies with the "fast-stable" and "fast-gentle-sharp" growth modes, respectively. The power function model can effectively describe the EPWP growth characteristics of the dense silt. Finally, based on the liquefaction behaviour of silt, a suggestion for reinforcing silt slopes or foundations is proposed.

On-site monitoring is very important for understanding formation mechanisms of frost hazards frequently occurring in pipeline foundation soils and for designing and deploying according mitigative measures in permafrost *** thaw subsidence of ground surfaces along the chinaRussia Crude Oil Pipeline(CRCOP) from Mo'he to Daqing,Heilongjiang Province,Northeast china have been observed at some segments underlain by ice-rich warm(>1.0°C) permafrost since the official operation in January *** monitoring results of the thermal states of foundation soils at the kilometer post(KP) 304 site along the CRCOP are presented in this *** results indicate that during the period from 2.1. to 2.1.,shallow soils(at the depths from0.8 to 4.0 m from ground surface) has warmed by approximately 1.0°C in the lateral range of 1.2 to 2.1.maway from the pipeline axis,and deeper permafrost(such as at the depth of 15 m,or the depth of zero annual amplitude of ground temperatures) by 0.08°C per year 4 m away from the pipe axis,and 0.07°C per year 5 m away from the pipeline *** results indicate an all-season talik has developed around and along the *** thaw bulb,with a faster lateral expansion(compared with the vertical growth),enlarges in summer and shrinks in *** research will provide important references and bases for evaluating thermal influences of warm pipeline on permafrost and for design,construction,operation and maintenance of pipelines in permafrost regions.

云南姚安县主要为构造剥蚀中山、低中山地貌,地质构造复杂,地震活动频繁,植被覆盖率高,地质灾害隐患识别困难。本文将SBAS-InSAR技术应用于姚安县地质灾害精细化调查隐患前期识别中,在地面核查的基础上,通过地表形变分析和前期识别、典型案例分析,发现了隐蔽性较强的滑坡,表明SBAS-InSAR技术监测范围广、数据覆盖密度大、测量精度高,在解决隐蔽性地质灾害隐患难以识别的困难上具有十分有效的作用。该方法的成功应用为当地的防灾减灾工作起到有力的技术支撑,也为其他地区开展同类工作起到一定的借鉴意义。

At 5: 39 AM on 24 june 2.1., a huge landslide-debris avalanche occurred on Fugui mountain at Xinmo village, Diexi town, Maoxian county, sichuan province, china. The debris blocked the Songpinggou River for about 2 km, resulting in a heavy loss of both human lives and properties(10 deaths, 3 injuries, 73 missing, and 103 houses completely destroyed). The objectives of this paper are to understand the overall process and triggering factors of this landslide and to explore the affecting factors for its long term evolution before failure. Post event surveys were carried out the day after the landslide occurrence. Information was gathered from literature and on-site investigation and measurement. Topography, landforms, lithology, geological setting, earthquake history, meteorological and hydrological data of the area were analysed. Aerial photographs and other remote sensing information were used for evaluation and discussion. Eye witnesses also provided a lot of helpful information for us to understand the process of initiation, development and deposition. The depositional characteristics of the moving material as well as the traces of the movement,the structural features of the main scarp and the seismic waves induced by the slide are presented and discussed in detail in this paper. The results show that the mechanism of the landslide is a sudden rupture of the main block caused by the instability of a secondary block at a higher position. After the initiation, the failed rock mass at higher position overloaded the main block at the lower elevation and collapsed in tandem. Fragmentation of the rock mass occurred later, thus forming a debris avalanche with high mobility. This landslide case indicates that such seismic events could influence geological hazards for over 80 years and this study provides reference to the long term susceptibility and risk assessment of secondary geological hazards from earthquake.
