Peritoneal macrophages attenuate retinal ganglion cell survival and neurite outgrowth

Inflammation is a critical pathophysiological process that modulates neuronal survival in the central nervous system after disease or ***,the effects and mechanisms of macrophage activation on neuronal survival remain *** the present study,we co-cultured adult Fischer rat retinas with primary peritoneal macrophages or zymosan-treated peritoneal macrophages for 7 *** analysis revealed that peritoneal macrophages reduced retinal ganglion cell survival and neurite outgrowth in the retinal explant compared with the control *** addition of zymosan to peritoneal macrophages attenuated the survival and neurite outgrowth of retinal ganglion *** media from peritoneal macrophages also reduced retinal ganglion cell survival and neurite *** result suggests that secretions from peritoneal macrophages mediate the inhibitory effects of these *** addition,increased inflammationand oxidation-related gene expression may be related to the enhanced retinal ganglion cell degeneration caused by zymosan *** summary,this study revealed that primary rat peritoneal macrophages attenuated retinal ganglion cell survival and neurite outgrowth,and that macrophage activation further aggravated retinal ganglion cell *** study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of the Joint Shantou International Eye Center of Shantou University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong,Shantou,Guangdong Province,China,on March 11,2014(approval ***20140311(2)-P01).

Comparison on Photopic Electroretinogram Negative Response between Young and Old Lewis Rats

Purpose:To investigate and compare the latency and amplitude of the electroretinogram(ERG) photopic negative response(PhNR) between young and old Lewis ***:Thirteen Lewis rats were divided into two groups according to ages,young group(3-month old,n=5) and old group(24 month old,n=8).The ERGs of the left eyes were measured and the latency and amplitude of a-wave,b-wave and PhNRs were recorded and compared according to *** mean values between two groups were statistically analysed by ***:The latency of PhNRs was evidently prolonged in old group and showed significant difference(P<0.05).There was no statistically significant difference between two groups regarding the amplitude and latency,and no significant difference was noted in the amplitude of ***:The prolonged latency of PhNR in aged rats possibly associate with the influence of aging upon retinal ganglion cell layer(RGCL).

Corneal Biomechanical Properties and Associated Factors in School-age Children

Purpose: To study and analyze the correlation among corneal biomechanical properties and associated factors including central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal curvature (CT), and intraocular pressure (IOP) in school-age children. Methods:A cross sectional investigation was conducted. An ocular response analyzer was utilized to assess the corneal biomechanical properties,such as corneal hysteresis and corneal resistance factors, in children of school age. Multivariate regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between corneal biomechanical properties and other ocular parameters including CCT, corneal curvature (k1 and k2), and IOP. The right eyes of all subjects were selected for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 571 children were enrolled: 303 male and 268 female,with an average age of 10.47 ±1.0 years. The mean value of corneal hysteresis was 10.98 ±1.78 mmHg, corneal resistance factor was 11.46±1.69 mmHg,and CCT was 556.01±28.97 μm. Conclusion:The feasibility of corneal biomechanical detection in school age children was validated. This study provides fundamental data on corneal biomechanical properties in school-age children and associated factors. (Eye Science 2013; 28:34-39)

Since the end of 2019, novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Wuhan,China and rapidly spread. The pathogen of COVID-19 is novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), which is virified to be highly homologous with severe acute respiratory?syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2003, and whether the eye surface infectious is associated with the respiratory disease has attracted the attention of researchers. Up to now, the virulence, transmmision way, and infectivity of 2019-nCoV have been understood, but the invasion mode and pathogenesis is under elucidated. The management of infactious source, cutting out of transmmision route and treatment of patients are the primary goal for prevention and control of COVID-19 *** is very important for ophthalmologists to effectively treat the eye diseases and at the same time to pay close attention for medical environment disinfection and personal pretection during the pandemic. Obtaining clean energy is of prime importance for planetary health and sustainable *** aimed to assess the association between residential energy transition and the risk of chronic respiratory *** data from the Global Health Observatory and Global Burden of Diseases,Injuries,and Risk Factors Study,we delineated the spatial distribution and temporal trends of the population using clean fuels for cooking at a global *** the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study,we performed rigorous and well-structured multistage analyses incorporating both cross-sectional and prospective data analyses to examine the associations between solid fuel use,residential energy transition,duration of solid fuel use,and the risk of chronic respiratory *** great progress,huge disparities in access to clean energy persist *** energy transition was associated with a lower risk of chronic respiratory *** the period of 2011–2013,compared with persistent solid fuel users,both participants who switched from solid to clean fuels(adjusted risk ratio[RR]0.78,95%confidence interval[CI]0.62–0.98)and persistent clean fuel users(adjusted RR 0.71,95%CI 0.57–0.89)had significantly lower risk of chronic respiratory diseases(p<0.001 for trend).Consistent associations were observed in the period of 2011–2015 and 2011–*** energy transition from solid to clean fuels could reduce the risk of chronic respiratory *** is a valuable lesson for policy-makers and the general public to accelerate energy switching to alleviate the burden of chronic respiratory diseases and achieve health benefits,particularly in low-and middle-income countries.

Prevalence of intermittent exotropia among primary and secondary school students in Shantou,China

Background: Few prevalence studies on intermittent exotropia(IXT) based on Chinese populations. Furthermore, longitudinal change in this pattern within a local setting has not been reported in the past. This study aims to determine the profile of children with IXT in ***: A total of 7,537 subjects from nine multi-layer primary and secondary schools participated in this investigation. The position of eyes was examined by using Hirschberg test and alternate cover test. The obtained results were classified according to respective features and analyzed statistically. Results: The prevalence of IXT among the participants was 7.98%, accounting for 73.04% of all types of strabismus. Junior high school students had a lower prevalence of IXT than elementary and senior high school counterparts. Logistic regression analysis showed that IXT was mainly found in male pupils at high grades in rural areas and in male secondary students at high grade in urban regions. Conclusions: IXT was shown to be more prevalent than other types of strabismus in Chinese children. Furthermore, the distribution and characteristics of IXT greatly varied among participants.

The early change of corneal vertical coma and trefoil in 2.8-mm superior incision cataract surgery

Background: To investigate early change of corneal aberrations after 2.8-mm superior incision ***: This study comprised 80 eyes of 75 patients. All the patients underwent phacoemulsification with monofocal foldable intraocular lens(IOLs) implanted through a 2.8-mm superior corneal incision. The anterior corneal wavefront aberrations for the 6.0-mm pupillary diameter was measured by i Trace wavefront aberrometer(Tracey Technologies, Inc.) preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively. Changes of root mean square(RMS) values of Z(3,-3), Z(3, 3), Z(3,-1), Z(3, 1), and Z(4, 0) and total high order aberration(HOA) were ***: The uncorrected and corrected visual acuities improve significantly(P<0.001). No significant postoperative changes were observed in spherical aberration(P=0.652). Significant changes in vertical coma and vertical trefoil(0.005±0.214 vs.-0.049±0.242, P=0.037;-0.141±0.222 vs.-0.258±0.359, P=0.001; separately). However, the total HOAs increased after cataract surgery(0.567±0.161 vs. 0.688±0.343, P<0.001).Conclusions: Corneal vertical coma and vertical trefoil changes significantly in 2.8mm superior corneal incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery. In addition, those had a trend to negative direction.

Long term changes of posterior corneal elevation after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis

Background: Corneal ectasia is a serious complication after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK). Ideally, patients at risk of ectasia should be identified prior to laser as unsuitable for LASIK, however, at present, there is no absolute test, system, or marker that can unequivocally identify patients at risk of developing ectasia. It has been suggested that changes in the forward protrusion of the posterior cornea or posterior corneal elevation(PCE) may be a key to the early detection of ectasia after LASIK. The purpose of this study was to examine the long term changes of the PCE after myopic LASIK using the ORBSCAN~ IIz(Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, USA) and to evaluate the contributory preoperative factors to PCE ***: This was a retrospective longitudinal case series. Forty-two eyes of 23 consecutive myopic patients who underwent uneventful LASIK surgery 6 years ago were recalled for a postoperative follow-up examination using the ORBSCAN~ IIz to determine the elevation changes to the posterior corneal surface from the preoperative measurements. A forward shift of the posterior surface was given a negative value. Correlation analyses and forward stepwise regression analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of each of the preoperative parameters on the changes in PCE. Statistical and graphical analyses were ***: There was no statistical difference between the mean best-fit sphere(BFS) pre-LASIK and 6 years postop(P=0.25). Forty-two post-LASIK eyes had a mean posterior displacement of -9.38±9.84 μm(range, 12 to-31 μm) 6 years after LASIK. Forward stepwise multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the ablation spherical equivalent(ASE) was the only indicator of the forward shift of the posterior cornea after ***: The present study identified a significant forward shift of the posterior cornea 6 years after LASIK. Background:The burden and pattern of ocular trauma in China are poorly known and not well *** aimed at studying the epidemiological characteristics of patients hospitalized for ocular trauma at major ophthalmology departments in the largest industrial base of plastic toys in ***:A retrospective study of ocular trauma cases admitted to 3 tertiary hospitals in China from 1st January 2001 to31 st December 2010 was ***:The study included a total of 3,644 injured eyes from 3,559 patients over the 10-year period:2,008(55.1%) openglobe injuries,1,580(43.4%) closed-globe injuries,41(1.1%) chemical injuries,15(0.4%) thermal injuries and 678(18.6%)ocular adnexal *** mean age of the patients was 29.0±16.8 years with a male-to-female ratio of 5.2:1(P= 0.007).The most frequent types of injury were work-related injuries(1,656,46.5%) and home-related injuries(715,20.1%).The majority of injuries in males(56.2%) and females(36.0%) occurred in the 15-44 age group and 0-14 age group,*** final visual acuity correlated with the initial visual acuity(Spearman’s correlation coefficient = 0.659;P<0.001).The Ocular Trauma Score also correlated with the final visual acuity(Spearman’s correlation coefficient = 0.655;P<0.001).Conclusions:This analysis provides an epidemiological study of patients who were hospitalized for ocular *** efforts are important for both work-related and home-related eye injuries.
