Distinguishing malignant from normal stomach tissues and its in vivo, in situ measurement in operating process using FTIR Fiber-Optic techniques

Gastric tissue samples were studied using mid-IR fiber-optic attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy. FTIR spectra of 90 tissue samples from 48 patients, including 32.normal and 58 malignant tissue samples, were chosen as examples. Malignancy was usually characterized by the absence of CH and C=O bands, a weak amide II band near 1545 cm-1, a shift of the amide I band to lower wave number, a decrease in the ～1450 cm-1 peak to less than the～1400 cm-1 peak. Subtraction spectra indicate that the amide I and amide II bands of normal and malignant tissues have larger differences in peak positions and relative intensities. The statistical analysis results confirm this conclusion. The results indicate that FTIR fiber optic techniques provide important information about cancerous tissue of the stomach, which can be used to differentiate the malignant tissue from the normal tissue. Based on the above results we successfully realize the detection of the tumor tissues of digestive tract in vivo and in situ. And the results of detection cancer near operating room and in vivo and in situ in the operating room are consistent with the conclusions for the samples stored in liquid N2. which is the basis for the clinical application.

Localization of calmodulin and calmodulin-like protein and their functions in biomineralization in P. fucata

Calmodulin (CaM) and calmodulin-like protein (CaLP) are two proteins involved in biomineralization. Their localizations in Pinct- ada fucata mantle epithelia were studied by Western blot (WB) analysis of the nuclear/cytosol fraction of primary cultured P. fucata mantle cells and immunogold electron microscopy. The results showed a completely different distribution of these two proteins at the subcellular level. CaM was distributed throughout both the nucleus and cytoplasm of the mantle epithelium but CaLP was distributed only in the cytoplasm. The functions of these two proteins in biomineralization were investigated by shell regeneration. During this pro- cess, the expressions of CaM and CaLP were greatly enhanced in different organelles of the mantle epithelium. Overexpression of these two proteins and a mutant of calmodulin-like protein (M-CaLP) that lacks an extra C-terminal tail in MC3T3-E1 promoted the mRNA expression of osteopontin, a biomineralization marker for osteoblasts. All of the results indicated that CaM and CaLP have completely different distributions in the mantle epithelium and affect the biomineralization process at different levels. The extra C-terminal tail of CaLP is important for its functions in biomineralization in P. fucata.

Molecular dynamics simulation of adsorption of an oil-water-surfactant mixture on calcite surface

An interface super molecular structure model for oil-water-surfactant mixture and calcite was established. By using a molecular dynamics method, the effects of rhamnolipid, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate and sodium hexadecyl sulfonate on the interface adsorption behavior of oil molecules were investigated. It was found that these three surfactants could reduce oil-calcite interface binding energy, and play a role of oil-displacing agent.

Structures and properties of novel 5,15-di[4-(5-acetylsulfanylpentyloxy)phenyl] porphyrin derivatives:Density functional theory calculations

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out in order to compare the molecular structures, atomic charges, molecular orbitals, electronic absorption spectra, and infrared (IR) spectra of the metal-free 5,15 -di[4-(5-acetylsul-fanylpentyloxy)phenyl]porphyrin H2.DPP(OC5H10SCOCH3)2. (1) (DPP = 5,15-diphenylporphyrin) and its zinc complex Zn[DPP(OC5H10SCOCH3)2. (2., which exhibit novel structures with two 5-acetylsulfanylpentyloxy side chains at the para-positions of opposite meso-attached phenyl groups. The calculated molecular structure and electronic absorption and IR spectra of 1 and 2.are consistent with the experimental results. The influences of meso-substitution, polar solvents, and central metal substitution on the structure and properties of porphyrin derivatives have been investigated by comparing the corresponding data for 1 and 2.with the help of data for the unsubstituted porphyrin derivatives, namely the metal-free porphyrin H2.or (3) and the porphyrinato-zinc compound (4). The identities of the main transitions in the electronic absorption spectra of 1 and 2.are assigned and the vibrational modes in their IR spectra are identified with the assistance of animated pictures produced based on normal coordinates. The theoretical work presented here will be helpful in increasing our understanding of the structure and spectroscopic properties, as well as substituent and solvent effects, for these novel porphyrin compounds.

Multi-frequency same-beam VLBI means that two explorers with a small separation angle are simultaneously observed with the main beam of receiving antennas. In the same-beam VLBI, the differential phase delay between two explorers and two receiving telescopes can be obtained with a small error of several picoseconds. The differential phase delay, as the observable of the same-beam VLBI, gives the separation angular information of the two explorers in the celestial sphere. The two-dimensional relative position on the plane-of-sky can thus be precisely determined with an error of less than 1 m for a distance of 3.8×105 km far away from the earth, by using the differential phase delay obtained with the four Chinese VLBI stations. The relative position of a lunar rover on the lunar surface can be determined with an error of 10 m by using the differential phase delay data and the range data for the lander when the lunar topography near the rover and the lander can be determined with an error of 10 m.

THz spectrum of reduced glutathione

The optical characteristics of reduced glutathione molecules between 0.2.THz and 2.4 THz have been investigated by THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). The absorption characteristics and optical parameters of the reduced glutathione purged with Nitrogen at room temperature were obtained experimentally. The measured results were fitted well with the theoretical results computed by using Density Functional Theory (DFT) in far-infrared range. Also the conformation of the reduced glutathione molecule was simulated by Gaussian 03. This work has demonstrated significantly that THz-TDS spectroscopy can further be used to study other biological molecules in biological and biomedical engineering.

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) protects liver graft function following ischemia in liver transplantation and liver resection. The aim of this study was to assess the advantages and any potential disadvantages of liver IPC prior to isolation for rat hepatocytes during isolation and cryopreservation. After isolating and thawing the cryopreserved hepatocytes after 14 and 2. d,cell viability,efficiency,and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in preserve solution were examined for every group. Groups treated with IPC had better cell viability determination,assessment of plating efficiency and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay than Group without IPC,suggesting that IPC prior to isolation may have a significant protective effect on hepatocytes subjected to isolation and short period cryopreservation.
