An efficient algorithm to compute transient pressure responses of slanted wells with arbitrary inclination in reservoirs

Compared with vertical and horizontal wells, the solution and computation of transient pressure responses of slanted wells are more complex. Vertical and horizontal wells are both simplified cases of slanted wells at particular inclination, so the model for slanted wells is more general and more complex than other models for vertical and horizontal wells. Many authors have studied unsteady-state flow of fluids in slanted wells and various solutions have been proposed. However, until now, few of the published results pertain to the computational efficiency. Whether in the time domain or in the Laplace domain, the computation of integration of complex functions is necessary in obtaining pressure responses of slanted wells, while the computation of the integration is complex and time-consuming. To obtain a perfect type curve the computation time is unacceptable even with an aid of high-speed computers. The purpose of this paper is to present an efficient algorithm to compute transient pressure distributions caused by slanted wells in reservoirs. Based on rigorous derivation, the transient pressure solution for slanted wells of any inclination angle is presented. Assuming an infinite-conductivity wellbore, the location of the equivalent-pressure point is determined. More importantly, according to the characteristics of the integrand in a transient pressure solution for slanted wells, the whole integral interval is partitioned into several small integral intervals, and then the method of variable substitution and the variable step-size piecewise numerical integration are employed. The amount of computation is significantly reduced and the computational efficiency is greatly improved. The algorithm proposed in this paper thoroughly solved the difficulty in the efficient and high-speed computation of transient pressure distribution of slanted wells with any inclination angle.

In view of the anisotropy,heterogeneity and stress-sensitive permeability in low permeability reservoirs,an analytical well test model was established by introducing the concept of permeability *** model considered the permeability stress-sensitivity,wellbore storage effect,and the skin *** perturbation technique and Laplace transformation were used to solve the mathematical model analytically in Laplace space,and the bottom-hole pressure type curves were plotted and analyzed in real space by using the Stehfest numerical inversion.

Development of unconventional tight oil and gas reservoirs such as shale pays presents a huge challenge to the petroleum industry due to the naturally low permeability of shale formations and thus low productivity of oil and gas *** formations are also vulnerable to the contamination of the water in the drilling and completion fluids,which further reduces reservoir *** gas-drilling(drilling with gas)has been used to address the issue,several problems such as formation water influx,wellbore collapse,excessive gas volume requirement and hole cleaning in horizontal drilling,still hinder its application.A new technique called gas-lift drilling has recently been proposed to solve these problems,but the optimal design of drilling operation requires a thorough investigation of fluid flow field below the asymmetric drill bits for evaluating the fluid power needed to clean the bottom *** an investigation is conducted in this work based on the Finite Element Method(FEM)implemented in an open source computational framework,*** and flow velocity fields were computed for three designs of drill bit face characterized by radial bit blades and one eccentric orifice of *** of the designs is found superior over the other two because it generates relatively uniform flow velocities between blades and provides a balanced fluid power needed to clean all the bit teeth on each bit *** quantify the capability of borehole cleanup presented by three drill bit designs,the energy per unit volume is calculated in each region of drill bit and compared with the required value suggested by the *** addition,the developed FEM model under FEniCS framework provides engineers an accurate tool for optimizing drill bit design for efficiently gas-lift drilling unconventional tight oil and gas reservoirs.

Study on the mechanism of gas-water two-phase flow in carbonate reservoirs at pore scale

Carbonate gas reservoirs generally contain water, leading to uneven water invasion, explosive water flooding and other prominent phenomena, which is an important factor restricting the efficient development of gas reservoirs. The study of gas-water two-phase flow behavior in carbonate gas reservoirs is of great significance for understanding the formation mechanism of residual water and trapped gas and improving the recovery of gas reservoirs. In this study, microscopic visualization physical models of fractured-vuggy and fractured-porous types were established based on CT images. And then gas-water two-phase flow experiments were conducted using the models, visually presenting the characteristics of gas-water two-phase flow and the formation mechanism of residual water and trapped gas in such reservoirs. On the basis of experiments, numerical simulation of gas-water two-phase flow at pore scale under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions was conducted using the VOF method, and the effect of capillary number on gas-water two-phase flow was quantitatively evaluated. The experiment results indicate the types of residual water and trapped gas formed in the fractured-vuggy and fracturedporous reservoirs. Compared with fractured-vuggy reservoir, the type of residual water in fracturedporous reservoir doesn't include water masses in the vugs, but includes network shaped residual water, and the type of trapped gas also includes network shaped trapped gas. The numerical simulation results indicate the residual water in the fractured-porous reservoir decreases with the increase of capillary number during gas flooding process, while the distribution of residual water in the fracturedvuggy reservoir is influenced by the combination of fractures and vugs. The distribution of trapped gas in different types of reservoirs shows a trend of first decreasing and then increasing with the increase of capillary number during water flooding process. Here we present six key parameters that have been applied to evaluate the Silurian Longmaxi shale gas accumulations of southern Sichuan *** parameters include richness of organic matter,single layer shale thickness,burial depth of the shale,maturity,shale properties,and brittle mineral *** combination with drilling data,the lower limits of these six parameters for marine shale gas have been evaluated and the following conclusions are drawn:(1)Organic carbon recovery, gas content inversion,and production tests have been applied for the first time to measure the lower limit of TOC,which is determined to be 1.0%.(2)Based on the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion theory for source rocks and the characteristics of Longmaxi shale,the lower limit of the single-layer thickness is estimated to be 30 m,of which a thickness of at least 15 m should contain high-quality shale.(3)Based on the correlation of TOC and porosity,the lower limit of gas-filled porosity is 1.2%.(4)Other parameters,such as maturity,burial depth,and brittle mineral content have also been studied with regard to the geologic conditions of southern *** on the study results,an evaluation index system has been established for highly evolved marine shale gas,and the system has been applied successfully to geologically screened shale gas occurrences in southern Sichuan Province.

It is known that there is a discrepancy between field data and the results predicted from the previous equations derived by simplifying three-dimensional（3-D） flow into two-dimensions（2-D）.This paper presents a new steady-state productivity equation for horizontal wells in bottom water drive gas ***,the fundamental solution to the 3-D steady-state Laplace equation is derived with the philosophy of source and the Green function for a horizontal well located at the center of the laterally infinite gas ***,using the fundamental solution and the Simpson integral formula,the average pseudo-pressure equation and the steady-state productivity equation are achieved for the horizontal *** case-studies are given in the paper,the results calculated from the newly-derived formula are very close to the numerical simulation performed with the Canadian software CMG and the real production data,indicating that the new formula can be used to predict the steady-state productivity of such horizontal gas wells.

In high sour gas reservoir drilling process, it happens occasionally that high-strength drill pipe suffers brittle fracture failure due to stress corrosion cracking, and poses serious hazard to drilling safety. To solve this problem, this paper studied the stress corrosion cracking mechanism and infl uencing factors of highstrength drill pipe in sour environment with hydrogen permeation experiments and tensile tests. We simulated practical conditions in laboratory and evaluated the stress corrosion cracking performance of the high-strength drill pipe under conditions of high stress level. For the problems occurring in use of high-strength drill pipe on site, the paper proposed a technical measure for slower stress corrosion cracking.
