Objective To test possible antioxidant activity of n-hexane extract of Podophyllum hexandrum under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Methods The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by the ability of the extract to interact with the stable free radical DPPH, Superoxide （02）, Hydroxyl （OH）, Hydrogen peroxide （H202） radicals, and reducing power ability of the extract was also evaluated. Under in vivo conditions the extract was evaluated for its hepatoprotective activity by measuring different biochemical parameters, such as serum alanine aminotransaminase, serum aspartate aminotransaminase and serum lactate dehydrogenase and antioxidant enz.mes. Antioxidant status was estimated by determining the activities of antioxidative enz.mes, glutathione reductase （GR）, glutathione peroxidase （GPx）, glutathione-S-transferase （GST） and superoxide dismutase （SOD）, and by determining the levels of reduced glutathione （GSH） and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances （TBARS）. Results Hexane extract of P. hexondrum exhibited good radical scavenging capacity in neutraliz.tion of DPPH, O2-, OH, and H202 radicals in a dose dependent manner, n-hexane extract of Podophyllum hexandrum at the doses of 20, 30, and 50 mg/kg-day produced hepatoprotective effect by decreasing the activity of serum marker enz.mes, while it significantly increased the levels of glutathione （GSH）, glutathione peroxidase （GPx）, glutathione reductase （GR）, super oxide dismutase （SOD）, and glutathione-S-transferase （GST） in a dose dependant manner. The effect of n-hexane extract was comparable to that of standard antioxidant vitamin E. Conclusion The extract of Podophyllum hexandrum possess free radical scavenging activity under in vitro conditions and could protect the liver tissue against CCI4 induced oxidative stress probably by increasing antioxidant defense activities.

Estimation of meteorological drought indices based on AgMERRA precipitation data and station-observed precipitation data

Meteorological drought is a natural haz.rd that can occur under all climatic regimes. Monitoring the drought is a vital and important part of predicting and analyz.ng drought impacts. Because no single index can represent all facets of meteorological drought, we took a multi-index approach for drought monitoring in this study. We assessed the ability of eight precipitation-based drought indices（SPI（Standardiz.d Precipitation Index）, PNI（Percent of Normal Index）, DI（Deciles index）, EDI（Effective drought index）, Cz.（China-z.index）, MCz.（Modified Cz.）, RAI（Rainfall Anomaly Index）, and z.I（z.score Index）） calculated from the station-observed precipitation data and the Ag MERRA gridded precipitation data to assess historical drought events during the period 1987–2010 for the Kashafrood Basin of Iran. We also presented the Degree of Dryness Index（DDI） for comparing the intensities of different drought categories in each year of the study period（1987–2010）. In general, the correlations among drought indices calculated from the Ag MERRA precipitation data were higher than those derived from the station-observed precipitation data. All indices indicated the most severe droughts for the study period occurred in 2001 and 2008. Regardless of data input source, SPI, PNI, and DI were highly inter-correlated（R^2=0.99）. Furthermore, the higher correlations（R^2=0.99） were also found between Cz. and MCz., and between z.I and RAI. All indices were able to track drought intensity, but EDI and RAI showed higher DDI values compared with the other indices. Based on the strong correlation among drought indices derived from the Ag MERRA precipitation data and from the station-observed precipitation data, we suggest that the Ag MERRA precipitation data can be accepted to fill the gaps existed in the station-observed precipitation data in future studies in Iran. In addition, if tested by station-observed precipitation data, the Ag MERRA precipitation data may be used for the data-lacking area

In this paper, we consider the following generaliz.d nonlinear k-Hessian system■,where G is a nonlinear operator and Sk(λ(Dz.2))stands for the k-Hessian operator. We first are interested in the classification of positive entire k-convex radial solutions for the k-Hessian system if φ(|x|, z., z.) = b(|x|)φ(z., z.) and ψ(|x|, z., z.) = h(|x|)ψ(z.). Moreover, with the help of the monotone iterative method, some new existence results on the positive entire k-convex radial solutions of the k-Hessian system with the special non-linearities ψ, φ are given, which improve and extend many previous works.

Population dynamics of Japanese threadfin bream Nemipterus japonicus from Pakistani waters

Japanese threadfin bream Nemipterus japonicus（Bloch, 1791） is among the most abundant and commercially important species in Pakistan. From the coast of Pakistan, four demersal trawl surveys in October–November 2009 and May–June, August, October and November in 2010 were carried out. The purpose of this study is to estimate the population dynamics and status of the stock of the N. japonicus from Pakistani waters based on the research trawl surveys from the research area. The data consist of n=784 length-weight pairs and n=7 530 length frequency with the maximum length and weight of 29 cm and 358 g respectively. The length frequency data were analyz.d using ELEFAN method in FiSAT computer package. The parameters of length and weight relationship were b=2.778, a=0.032 and R2=0.973. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth function parameters were L∞=30.45 cm, K=0.270 year-1. Based on length-converted catch curve analysis the total mortality（z. during this study was estimated at 0.960 year-1. The natural mortality coefficient（M） was 0.74 year-1 using Pauly＇s equation（the annual average sea surface temperature was 27°C）, therefore, the fishing mortality coefficients（F） were 0.22 year-1. The yield per recruit analysis indicated that when tc was 2, Fmax was estimated at 1.2 and F0.1 at 1.1. When tc was 1, Fmax was estimated at 0.95 and F0.1 at 0.8. Because current age at first capture is about 1 year and Fcurrent was 0.22, Fcurrent is smaller than F0.1 and Fmax, which indicated that the fishery is about in a safe condition. When using Gulland（1971） biological reference point, Fopt was equals to M（0.74）. The current fishing mortality rate of 0.22 was smaller than the target biological reference point.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Management Course of Paediatric Rheumatic Diseases in a Tertiary Care Hospital of Bangladesh

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on every aspect of life. Like other chronic diseases, pediatric rheumatic diseases (PRDs) also faced unique challenges during the pandemic, including limited access to care, concerns regarding infection risk, drug shortages and social isolation. Objective: The objective of the study was to identify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the management course of children with rheumatic diseases. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the department of paediatrics, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka from April 2021 to March 2022. Two hundred and twenty patients were enrolled. A predesigned questionnaire was completed which included socio-demographic, clinical and laboratory parameters. Disease activity was assessed clinically and from laboratory profile. Data were calculated manually and by using SPSS version 22. z.proportion test and chi square test were done when applicable. Results: Among the enrolled PRD cases 87.7% were Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), 7.7% were Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and 4.6% were other cases. Irregular follow-ups were found in 69.9% JIA cases, 82.4% SLE cases and 60% other PRD cases. Poor drug compliance was present in 18.2% of cases. A significant number of patients had higher disease activity or flare during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: During COVID-19 pandemic most (70.5%) of the PRD patients were irregular in their follow-ups. Poor drug compliance was also more than in the pre-COVID period. Disease activity status significantly worsened during this period.
