Epidemiology and immunodiagnostics of Strongyloides stercoralis infections among migrant workers in Malaysia

Objective: To investigate the status of Strongyloides(S.) stercoralis infections among migrant workers in Malaysia for the first time and identify risk ***: Four diagnostic methods were employed for the detection of S. stercoralis including microscopy, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) using a commercial kit, ELISA using the rSs1a antigen and polymerase chain reaction(PCR). Low and semi-skilled workers from five working sectors(i.e. manufacturing, food service, agriculture and plantation, construction and domestic service) were tested on a voluntary basis. Results: The overall seroprevalence of S. stercoralis from 483 workers employing the ELISA commercial kit for IgG was 35.8%(n=173;95% CI: 31.5%-40.1%) whereas seroprevalence using the rSs1a-ELISA was 13.0%(n=63;95% CI: 10.0%-16.0%). Cross tabulation between the ELISA commercial kit and rSs1a-ELISA showed that only 6.4%(n=31;95% CI: 4.2%-8.6%) of the samples were positive in both tests. Microscopic examination of all 388 fecal samples were negative;however subsequent testing by a nested PCR against DNA from the same samples successfully amplified DNA from three male subjects(0.8%;3/388). Male workers, India and Myanmar nationality, food service occupation and those living in the hostel were statistically significant with seroprevalence(P<0.005). Conclusion: This is the first report on the epidemiology of S. stercoralis infections among the migrant workers in Malaysia. Our results highlight the importance of using appropriate diagnostic tools for detection. The presence of anti-S. stercoralis antibodies in the study population calls for improvements in personal hygiene and sanitation standards among migrant workers in Malaysia through control strategies including health education campaigns and programs aimed at increasing awareness and healthy behaviors.

Although the use of stable transformation technology has led to great insight into gene function,its application in high-throughput studies remains ***-infiltration have been widely used in species such as Nicotiana benthamiana for the rapid detection of gene expression and protein interaction analysis,but this technique does not work efficiently in other plant species,including Arabidopsis *** an efficient high-throughput transient expression system is currently lacking in the model plant species ***,we developed a method that is characterized by high efficiency,reproducibility,and suitability for transient expression of a variety of functional proteins in *** and 7 other plant species,including Brassica oleracea,Capsella rubella,Thellungiella salsuginea,Thellungiella halophila,Solanum tuberosum,Capsicum annuum,and *** of this method was independently verified in three independent research facilities,pointing to the robustness of this ***,in addition to demonstrating the utility of this technique in a range of species,we also present a case study employing this method to assess protein–protein interactions in the sucrose biosynthesis pathway in Arabidopsis.

Social integration has well-established health benefits among older adults in observational studies. However, interventions designed to increase social integration have not improved health suggesting important knowledge gaps on how social integration influences health outcomes. This study developed a new measure of social integration, daily social contact, capturing the interpersonal nature of social integration and mobility of individuals, and providing a direct assessment of individuals’ real-time access to companionship and social support. The data used is the 2006-2007 American Time Use Survey (ATUS), which surveyed 25,191 individuals aged 15 years and older (n = 4378 aged 65 years and older). Generalized ordinal logistic regression analyses revealed positive, but non-parallel relationships between daily social contacts and the ordinal categories of self-rated health among older adults. This study may be used to identify populations that experience social exclusion, such that future research can determine more precisely how to intervene to improve health outcomes.

AIM To test the effects of humic acids on innate microbial communities of the *** We followed the effects of oral supplementation with humic acids(Activomin?) on concentrations and composition of colonic microbiome in 14 healthy volunteers for 45 d. 3 × 800 mg Activomin? were taken orally for 10 d followed by 3 × 400 mg for 35 d. Colonic microbiota were investigated using multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH) of Carnoy fixated and paraffin embedded stool cylinders.
