Enhancing performance of soil using lime and precluding landslide in Benin(West Africa)

The past decade has been characterized by the development of infrastructure in the main cities in West *** requires more comprehensive studies of geotechnical properties of the soil in the region with an aim of creating sustainable *** paper examined the performance of the soil in Benin(West Africa).In this research,three objectives have been adopted in-depth on the performance characteristics of West Africans soil and aim to(i)accessing characteristics of soil types in the region;(ii)assessing the performance of these soils with 2%,3%and 5%of lime and(iii)characterizing landslide to evaluate the damage and potential *** methods used to examine these objectives are experimental tests according to standard French *** particle size test,Proctor test,and Atterberg limits test which are physical tests and the mechanical tests such as dynamic penetration test,direct shear test,and oedometer test,were used to assess the first *** Proctor test and California bearing ratio test were examined for the second objective and geological,environmental,social and safety study of the river bank slide were evaluated for the third *** paper firstly reveals the unstable and stable areas in southern Benin(West Africa)with the presence of clays soil and gives an equation for predicting the unstable and stable area,and secondly shows that the proportion of percentage lime leading to the best performances varying between 2%and 3%.Finally,this paper shows that the sliding of a bank could be the consequence of the sudden receding water recorded in a valley.

The plasticity index is an essential design parameter used as a standard input in fine-grained soil investigation *** is used to estimate the plasticity and physical properties of soils,and indirectly their strength *** index is determined from the Atterberg limit tests,starting from the limits of liquidity and ***,the realization of the test considered as basic and simple,is not so *** effects of the operator,the calibration of the apparatus and the environmental aspects during the tests affect the reliability and accuracy of the *** this paper,the objective is to overcome these difficulties by evaluating the plasticity index of clay and loam soils by considering only the values of the liquid *** samples were collected from 0 to 5 m depth in the localities of the Khôdepression in *** these samples,Atterberg limit tests were performed in the *** MATLAB’s Curve Fitting Toolbox,linear,exponential and power prediction models were *** results showed that there is indeed a good correlation between the plasticity index and the liquid limit of the *** the linear model,it was observed R2 equal to *** the exponential model,R2 is 0.98871 and for the power model 0.9802.A study of the residual plot validated the models found,as well as comparisons with well-known literature *** the equations obtained,it is now possible to study the plasticity of soils in the Khôdepression only from the liquid limit,without determining the plasticity limit.

Microstructural, Chemical and Mineralogical Analyses for Understanding the Geotechnical Properties of Clayey soils

This paper presents a study research in the laboratory of three clayey soils from the depression of the Lama, a tropical climate area where disorders appear on construction and roads. samples were tested to establish the relationship between their mineralogy and their geotechnical properties. On the three clayey soils, analyses were performed to characterize the macroscopic behavior (physical tests, free swelling test and compressibility tests) and the microstructural, chemical and mineralogical characterizations by thermal analysis, chemical analysis, X-Ray diffraction, scanning Electron Microscopy observations complementary X-ray EDs analyses. At first glance, the results of physical and compressibility tests appear not to be consistent with the free swelling test results. Indeed, these results highlighted differences in the behaviors of the samples because the swelling potential revealed by the results of physical and compressibility test does not follow the same trend as the one given by the free swelling test result. The main clay minerals in the studied clayey soils varied from fibrous clays (palygorskite) to best-known clays such as smectite and kaolinite. Microstructural, chemical and mineralogical analyses allowed to understand and explain the different trends obtained by the different types of geotechnical characterization tests of studied clayey soils.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of stress Condition in Unstable soil

In unstable soils, a special erosion process termed suffusion can occur under the effect of relatively low hydraulic gradient. The critical hydraulic gradient of an unstable soil is smaller than in stable soils, which is described by a reduction factor α. According to a theory of skempton and Brogan (1994) [1], this reduction factor is related to the stress conditions in the soil. In an unstable soil, the average stresses acting in the fine portion are believed to be smaller than the average stresses in the coarse portion. It is assumed that the stress ratio and the reduction factor for the hydraulic gradient are almost equal. In order to prove this theory, laboratory tests and discrete element modelings are carried out. Models of stable and unstable soils are established, and the stresses inside the sample are analysed. It is found that indeed in unstable soils the coarse grains are subject to larger stresses. The stress ratios in stable soils are almost unity, whereas in unstable soils smaller stress ratios, which are dependent on the soil composition and on the relative density of the soil, are obtained. A comparison between the results of erosion tests and numerical modeling shows that the stress ratios and the reduction factors are strongly related, as assumed by skempton and Brogan (1994) [1].

Influence of some Plant Fibers on the Mechanical Performance of Composite Materials

This work focused on the search for biobased materials capable of being used in road techniques as soil inclusions, and on studying the influence of their incorporation on the characteristic parameters of pavement layers. To this end, pineapple, cyperus and imperata plant fibers, due to their endemic availability, were used as reinforcement on sourced materials, notably bar soil, lateritic gravel and silty sand. Complete identification and mechanical tests (Proctor and CBR) were carried out on materials in their natural state (soil) and on composite materials (soil + plant fibers) in the laboratory to determine their classification in road geotechnics, their compaction parameters and their mechanical behavior. Firstly, the various types of 2.5 cm long fibers were incorporated into the different types of soil at mass contents of 1% and 2%. This part of the study showed that the pineapple fiber composite incorporated into class A2 bar soil offered the best results, with a 38% gain in CBR index compared with the natural soil. Pineapple fibers incorporated at 1% in lateritic gravel raise the CBR value of the reinforced soil to 10% of the CBR value of the natural soil and to 7% for silty sand.
