Concept and application of ideal protein for pigs

Knowledge about the amino acid requirements and the response of pigs to the amino acid supply is essential in feed formulation. A deficient AA supply results in a reduction in performance while an oversupply is costly and leads to excessive nitrogen excretion with a potentially negative environmental impact. Amino acid requirements are determined to a large extent by the protein deposition in the body and, for lactating sows, by the protein exported in the milk. The concept of ideal protein was developed more than 50 years ago and refers to a protein with an amino acid profile that exactly meets the animal＇s requirement so that all amino acids are equally limiting for performance. Because Lys typically is the first-limiting amino acid, the ideal amino acid profile is often expressed relative to Lys. Although the ideal protein profile is often assumed to be constant for a given production stage, （small） changes in the ideal protein profile can occur within a production stage. This can be caused by changes in the relative contribution of the different components of amino acid requirements during the productive life on the animal （e.g. changes in the relative contribution of growth and maintenance）. Amino acids requirements can be determined experimentally using dose-response studies. The design of the study, the chosen response criterion, and the statistical model affect the requirement estimate. Although considerable experimental work has been carried out to determine the requirements for Lys, Met, Thr, and Trp in growing pigs （and to a lesser extent in sows）, little is known about the requirements for the other essential amino acids. Experimental dose-response studies generally focus on the requirement and less on the overall response （i.e. what are the consequences of an amino acid deficiency？）. Cold and dark periods have descended on Earth several times in geological history. One such period characterized the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary, following a meteor impact near Chicxulub in Mexico, about 66 million years ago, which caused dust, sulfate aerosols, and soot particles to be ejected into the atmosphere. This in turn led to a so-called “impact winter,” inhibiting photosynthesis and causing a global collapse of terrestrial and marine food webs, leading to the extinction of 60%–70% of plants and animals ( Alvarez et al., 1980 ). Different from animals that might still be able to find shelter and detritus food in a harsh environment, plants are sessile and require (lots of) light for photosynthesis. How did they survive in a time of prolonged darkness and decreasing temperatures ( Vellekoop et al., 2016 )?

Histologically proven hepatic steatosis associates with lower testosterone levels in men with obesity

Near-infrared fluorescence guided esophageal reconstructive surgery: A systematic review

BACKGROUND After an esophagectomy, the stomach is most commonly used to restore continuity of the upper gastrointestinal tract. These esophago-gastric anastomoses are prone to serious complications such as leakage associated with high morbidity and mortality. Graft perfusion is considered to be an important predictor for anastomotic integrity. Based on the current literature we believe Indocyanine green fluorescence angiography(ICGA) is an easy assessment tool for gastric tube(GT) perfusion, and it might predict anastomotic leakage(AL).AIM To evaluate feasibility and effectiveness of ICGA in GT perfusion assessment and as a predictor of *** This study was designed according to the PRISMA guidelines and registered in the PROSPERO database. PubMed and EMBASE were independently searched by 2 reviewers for studies presenting data on intraoperative ICGA GT perfusion assessment during esophago-gastric reconstruction after *** outcomes such as feasibility, complications, intraoperative surgical changes based on ICGA findings, quantification attempts, anatomical data and the impact of ICGA on postoperative anastomotic complications, were collected by 2 independent researchers. The quality of the included articles was assessed based on the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies. The 19 included studies presented data on 1192 esophagectomy patients, in 758 patients ICGA was used perioperative to guide esophageal *** The 19 included studies for qualitative analyses all described ICGA as a safe and easy method to evaluate gastric graft perfusion. AL occurred in 13.8% of the entire cohort, 10% in the ICG guided group and 20.6% in the control group(P <0.001). Cultivated hawthorn(Crataegus pinnatifida ***)is an important medicinal and edible plant with a long history of use for health protection in ***,we provide a de novo chromosomelevel genome sequence of the hawthorn cultivar“Qiu Jinxing.”We assembled an 823.41 Mb genome encoding 40571 genes and further anchored the779.24 Mb sequence into 17 pseudo-chromosomes,which account for 94.64%of the assembled *** analyses revealed that cultivated hawthorn diverged from other species within the Maleae(apple tribe)at approximately 35.4 ***,genes involved in the flavonoid and triterpenoid biosynthetic pathways have been significantly amplified in the hawthorn *** addition,our results indicated that the Maleae share a unique ancient tetraploidization event;however,no recent independent whole-genome duplication event was specifically detected in *** amplification of non-specific long terminal repeat retrotransposons contributed the most to the expansion of the hawthorn ***,we identified two paleo-sub-genomes in extant species of Maleae and found that these two sub-genomes showed different rearrangement *** also reconstructed the ancestral chromosomes of Rosaceae and discussed two possible paleopolyploid origin patterns(autopolyploidization or allopolyploidization)of ***,our study provides an improved context for understanding the evolution of Maleae species,and this new highquality reference genome provides a useful resource for the horticultural improvement of hawthorn.

Here,through single-molecule real-time sequencing,we present a high-quality genome sequence of the Japanese larch(Larix kaempferi),a conifer species with great value for wood production and ecological *** assembled genome is 10.97 Gb in size,harboring 45,828 protein-coding *** the genome,66.8%consists of repeat sequences,of which long terminal repeat retrotransposons are dominant and make up 69.86%.We find that tandem duplications have been responsible for the expansion of genes involved in transcriptional regulation and stress responses,unveiling their crucial roles in adaptive *** transcriptome analysis reveals that lignin content in *** is mainly determined by the process of monolignol *** expression values of six genes(LkC OMT7,LkC OMT8,LkL AC23,LkL AC102,LkP RX148,and LkP RX166)have significantly positive correlations with lignin *** results indicated that the increased expression of these six genes might be responsible for the high lignin content of the larches’***,this study provides new genome resources for investigating the evolution and biological function of conifer trees,and also offers new insights into wood properties of larches.

Abnormal subchondral bone remodeling leading to sclerosis is a main feature of osteoarthritis(OA), and osteomodulin(OMD), a proteoglycan involved in extracellular matrix mineralization, is associated with the sclerotic phenotype. However, the functions of OMD remain poorly understood, specifically in vivo. We used Omd knockout and overexpressing male mice and mutant zebrafish to study its roles in bone and cartilage metabolism and in the development of OA. The expression of Omd is deeply correlated with bone and cartilage microarchitectures affecting the bone volume and the onset of subchondral bone sclerosis and spontaneous cartilage lesions. Mechanistically, OMD binds to RANKL and inhibits osteoclastogenesis, thus controlling the balance of bone remodeling. In conclusion, OMD is a key factor in subchondral bone sclerosis associated with OA. It participates in bone and cartilage homeostasis by acting on the regulation of osteoclastogenesis. Targeting OMD may be a promising new and personalized approach for OA.
