The Department of Surgery at Laval University has been a key player in the development of Canada-China cooperation since the *** projects initiated and developed by Jean Couture and Guojin Liu to address cancer issues,and specifically breast cancer,were heralded as outstanding *** the meantime,the Department of Surgery at Laval University trained numerous Chinese scholars,students,and post-doctoral fellows who became leaders in their fields of expertise.A few of these scholars and students settled in Canada,but the vast majority returned *** 2007,a highly specialized research program related to surgical implants with the College of Textiles at Donghua University has been opening new avenues in medical textiles to develop expertise through student training,to launch bridges between textile engineers and clinicians,and to provide the industry with a unique *** final goal is to improve the accessibility and affordability of health care delivery in both Canada and *** is now a key player in related research and no longer requires foreign *** it can easily find multiple partners,Canada must be alert to building on its legacy and maintaining its privileged *** is now a place for Canadian champions.

Purpose: A comparison of the long-term (26 weeks) tissue incorporation between metallic bare stents, polymer coated stents and drug eluting stents was carried out on explanted devices to establish the benefit of drug release. Methodology: Yorkshire-Landrace pigs were divided into 3 groups: metallic bare stents (MBS) group, Infinnium polymer coated stents (PCS) group and Infinnium drug eluting stents (DES) group. After incision of the femoral artery, the stents were deployed through guiding catheter into RCA, LAD and Circumflex arteries (3 stents per animal). Twenty-six weeks later, the devices were harvested together with the adjacent coronary artery segments. The specimens were embedded in polymethylmethacrylate cut and stained with toluidine blue and/or HE for histological observations. Results: The lumen was considerable reduced, no anchorage of the stents in the arterial wall, the strut was encapsulated by very thick fibrous capsule in MBS group. In PCS group: the lumen was open;the internal capsules were thick and reorganized at various degrees;the fibrous tissue reaction was usually oriented towards the lumen of the blood conduit;and there was no real anchorage of the stainless steel wires within the arterial wall. In DES group: The artery lumen was open and the flow surface was smooth;occasionally, the presence of endothelial-like cells was detected;the internal capsule was thin and well anchored to the structure of the stent;no necrosis was visible. Conclusion: Stents coated with polymer containing drug suppressed neointimal formation in 26 weeks without systemic toxicity. However, there was greater intimal fibrin deposition, intimal hemorrhage, and intimal inflammatory associated with drug coated stents. These findings indicate delayed healing or local toxicity secondary to drug exposure. More pharmacokinetic and histological studies are needed to better define the therapeutic window of drug-releasing stents.
