Effects of drying process of Yuanzhi (Radix Palygalae) on its bioactive ingredients

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of the drying processing in terms operational parameters on the bioactive constituents of six Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae)samples across China.METHODS: Six Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae) samples were investigated using thermogravimetry analysis. The heating courses were set in two ways: thetemperature-programmed process from room temperature to 150℃,and the constant-temperature course at 50℃, 70℃ and 90℃.RESULTS: The peak temperature of six Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae) samples ranged from 78℃ to 88℃.The mass loss rate ofYuanzhi(Radix Palygalae) alcohol-soluble extract was significantly increased when heated at 90℃. Four types of bioactive ingredients were detected in volatile oils of Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae) sample from Shanxi province by Gas Chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy results showed that the drying temperature exerted a great influence on types and amount of ingredients of Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae). The kinetic study showed that the constant-temperature drying process ofYuanzhi Radix Palygalae) samples could be well described by the Page Model, especially for the drying process at 50℃, in which R2and SD values were more than 0.98 and less than 0.04, respectively. The drying constant k of three Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae) samples from Shanxi, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces in China was corresponding to the Arrhenius equation, and their activation energies were28.07, 25.38 and 21.48 kJ/mol, respectively.CONCLUSION: The drying process of Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae) was very important for bioactive ingredients improvement in Yuanzhi(Radix Palygalae). Temperature was a thermodynamic property significantly affecting the process.

The ecological response of natural phytoplankton population and related metabolic rates to future ocean acidification

Ocean acidifi cation(OA)and global warming-induced water column stratification can signifi cantly alter phytoplankton-related biological activity in the marine ecosystem.Yet how these changes may play out in the tropical Indian Ocean remains unclear.This study investigated the ecological and metabolic responses of the different phytoplankton functional groups to elevated CO_(2) partial pressure and nitrate deficiency in two different environments of the eastern Indian Ocean(EIO).It is revealed that phytoplankton growth and metabolic rates are more sensitive to inorganic nutrients rather than CO_(2).The combined interactive effects of OA and N-limitation on phytoplankton populations are functional groupspecific.In particular,the abundance and calcification rate of calcifying coccolithophores are expected to be enhanced in the future EIO.The underlying mechanisms for this enhancement may be ascribed to coccolithophore’s lower carbon concentrating mechanisms(CCMs)efficiency and OA-induced[HCO^(-)_(3)]increase.In comparison,the abundance of non-calcifying microphytoplankton(e.g.,diatoms and dinoflagellates)and primary productivity would be inhibited under those conditions.Diff erent from previous laboratory experiments,interspecifi c competition for resources would be an important consideration in the natural phytoplankton populations.These combined factors would roughly determine calcifying coccolithophores as“winners”and non-calcifying microphytoplankton as“losers”in the future ocean scenario.Due to the large species-specific differences in phytoplankton sensitivity to OA,comprehensive investigations on oceanic phytoplankton communities are essential to precisely predict phytoplankton ecophysiological response to ocean acidification.

Introduction:Due to the increasing number of medical images,image retrieval has become an important technique for medical image analytics.Although many content-based image retrieval methods have been proposed,the retrieval of images in datasets related to emerging/new infectious diseases still remain a challenge-mostly due to the lack of historical data.As a result,the current retrieval models have limited functionality in helping doctors make accurate diagnoses of new diseases.Methods:In this paper,we propose a zero-shot retrieval model based on meta-learning and ensemble learning,which can obtain a model with stronger generalizability without using any relevant training data,and thus performs well on new types of test data.Results:The experimental results showed that the proposed method is 3% to 5% higher than the traditional method,which means that our model can retrieve relevant medical images more accurately for newly emerging data types and provide doctors with more effective assistance.Discussion:When a new infectious disease occurs,doctors can use the proposed zero-shot retrieval model to retrieve all relevant cases,quickly find the common problems of patients,find the locations of the new infections,and determine its infectivity as soon as possible.The proposed method is a new computeraided decision support technology for emerging infectious diseases.

Does Over-credit Stimulate Corporate Investment？ Evidence from Listed Companies in China

We define and quantify for the first time over-credit at the firm level, which refers to the case in which the amount of bank credit that a firm obtains exceeds its expenditure on corporate investment for the year. Then, we explore how over-credit affects corporate investment to determine whether credit expansion in China is consistent with the principle of finance serving the real economy. The results show that over-credit promotes firm investment, and this effect was enhanced by the housing boom. However, the effect of the property market reversed after 2012, owing to China＇s economic transition from a quantitative to a structural mismatch between supply and demand. Finally, we explore how over-credit affects the capacity utilization ratio and whether it has aggravated the overcapacity problem in China. The results show that over-credit reduces firms＇ capacity utilization ratio. This finding indicates that excessive credit expansion has exacerbated the overcapacity problem in China.

A novel mitochondrial protein is required for cell wall integrity,auxin accumulation and root elongation in Arabidopsis under salt stress

Maintenance of root elongation is beneficial for the growth and survival of plants under salt stress,but currently the cellular components involved in the regulation of root growth under high salinity are not fully understood.In this study,we identified an Arabidopsis mutant,rres1,which exhibited reduced root elongation under treatment of a variety of salts,including NaCl,NaNO3,KCl,and KNO3.RRES1 encodes a novel mitochondrial protein and its molecular function is still unknown.Under salt stress,the root meristem length was shorter in the rres1 mutant compared to the wild type,which was correlated with a reduced auxin accumulation in the mutant.Reactive oxygen species(ROS),as important signals that regulate root elongation,were accumulated to higher levels in the rres1 mutant than the wild type after salt treatment.Measurement of monosaccharides in the cell wall showed that arabinose and xylose contents were decreased in the rres1 mutant under salt stress,and application of boric acid,which is required for the crosslinking of pectic polysaccharide rhamnogalacturonan-II(RG-II),largely rescued the root growth arrest of the rres1 mutant,suggesting that RRES1 participates in the maintenance of cell wall integrity under salt stress.GUS staining assay indicated that the RRES1 gene was expressed in leaves and weakly in root tip under normal conditions,but its expression was dramatically increased in leaves and roots after salt treatment.Together,our study reveals a novel mitochondrial protein that regulates root elongation under salt stress via the modulation of cell wall integrity,auxin accumulation,and ROS homeostasis.

A recent paper by Kidokoro et al.(2020)in The Plant Cell reported a transgene-dependent transcriptional silencing phenomenon in the dominant ice1-1 Arabidopsis mutant containing the CBF3-LUC reporter,and questioned whether ICE1 may regulate CBF genes and may be involved in plant cold response.Here,we evaluate available evidence supporting the involvement of ICE1 in plant cold response,and provide ChIP-seq data showing ICE1 binding to the promoters of CBF genes and other regulatory genes known to be critical for cold response as well as to the promoters of some COR genes.

In the last decade,electromagnetic pollution has caused people’s considerable attention.Developing absorbing material with low cost,lightweight,simple preparation,and high electromagnetic attenuation efficiency has become a feasible means to deal with this problem.In this work,core–shell SiC_(NWs)@MnO_(2)@PPy(NWs:nanowires,PPy:polypyrrole)heterostructures composed of SiC nanowires core,MnO_(2)nanosheets inter-layer,and PPy coating were successfully prepared through chemical vapor deposition and two-step electrodeposition process.Taking advantage of the interfacial polarization and dipole polarization,the obtained product displays excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performances with the minimum reflection loss(RLmin)of−50.59 dB when the matching thickness is 2.41 mm,and the optimal effective absorption bandwidth(EAB)value reaches to 6.64 GHz at a matching thickness of 2.46 mm,revealing that the SiC_(NWs)@MnO_(2)@PPy nanocomposite could be served as a promising electromagnetic wave absorbing material.On the basis of systematic analysis concerning the electromagnetic parameters,the dissipation process of the incident electromagnetic wave was demonstrated reasonably,which may provide a referable preparation strategy for novel heterostructures,especially nonmagnetic lightweight absorbing material.

Near-infrared(NIR)-light-triggered photothermal therapy(PTT)is a promising treatment for breast cancer.However,its therapeutic efficiency is often compromised due to the heatinduced up-regulation of heat shock proteins,which confer photothermal resistance.To solve this urgent problem,PEGylated two-dimensional boron nanosheets(B-PEG)-which allow both multimodal imaging and photothermal conversion-were loaded with gambogic acid(GA),which can inhibit heat shock protein 90(Hsp90).Experimental findings indicated that this combination of B-PEG and GA could serve as an integrated drug delivery system for cancer diagnosis and treatment.It could be used to administer mild PTT as well as chemotherapy for breast cancer,provide improved anti-tumor effects,and reduce the toxicity of PTT,all while inhibiting breast cancer growth.This drug delivery system could offer a novel tool for administering chemotherapy combined with PTT while avoiding the adverse effects of traditional PTT.

Plants affect the horizontal transmission of a new densovirus infecting the green peach aphid Myzus persicae by modulating honeydew production

In a tritrophic context of plant-insect-entomopathogen,plants play important roles in modulating the interaction of insects and their pathogenic viruses.Currently,the influence of plants on the transmission of insect viruses has been mainly studied on baculoviruses and some RNA viruses,whereas the impact of plants on other insect viruses is largely unknown.Here,we identified a new densovirus infecting the green peach aphid Myzus persicae and tested whether and how host plants influence the transmission of the aphid densovirus.The complete single-stranded DNA genome of the virus,M.persicae densovirus 2,is 5727 nt and contains inverted terminal repeats.Transcription and phylogenetic analysis indicated that the virus was distinct from other a few identified aphid densoviruses.The virus abundance was detected highly in the intestinal tract of aphids,compared with the lower level of it in other tissues including head,embryo,and epidermis.Cabbage and pepper plants had no obvious effect on the vertical transmission and saliva-mediated horizontal transmission of the virus.However,the honeydew-mediated horizontal transmission among aphids highly depended on host plants(65%on cabbages versus 17%on peppers).Although the virus concentration in the honeydew produced by aphids between 2 plants was similar,the honeydew production of the infected aphids reared on peppers was dramatically reduced.Taken together,our results provide evidence that plants influence the horizontal transmission of a new densovirus in an aphid population by modulating honeydew secretion of aphids,suggesting plants may manipulate the spread of an aphid-pathogenic densovirus in nature.

Among the gynecological cancers,ovarian cancer is the most lethal.Its therapeutic options include a combination of chemotherapy with platinum-based compounds and cytoreductive surgery.Most ovarian cancer patients exhibit an initial response to platinum-based therapy,however,platinum resistance has led to up to 80%of this responsive cohort becoming refractory.Ovarian cancer recurrence and drug resistance to current chemotherapeutic options is a global challenge.Chemo-resistance is a complex phenomenon that involves multiple genes and signal transduction pathways.Therefore,it is important to elucidate on the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in chemo-resistance.This inform decisions regarding therapeutic management and help in the identification of novel and effective drug targets.Studies have documented the individual bidmarkers of platinum-resistance in ovarian cancer that are potential therapeutic targets.This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of platinum resistance in ovarian cancer,novel drug targets,and clinical outcomes.
