Shells in the cabinet:four new species of Tellinidae(Mollusca:Bivalvia:Tellinoidea)identified from existing South China Sea collections

Four species new to science were identified in the Tellinidae museum collections in the Marine Biological Museum of Chinese Academy of Sciences.Pinguitellina triquetra sp.nov.,collected in 1981,has not previously been described or reported.It differs from other Pinguitellina species by its trigonal shape,rose-colored valve interior,and deep and wide pallial sinus,which is confluent with the pallial line.Pinguitellina protuberangla sp.***.has a broad and deep dorsal corner,short and straight posterodorsal margin,comparatively large adductor scars,depressed and fragile shells,and deep socket at the anterior edge of the right valve.Pinguitellina minuta sp.***.was previously misidentified as Arcopella casta in China.It is a new species based on its unique characteristics,which include small,fragile,inflated,translucent,and triangularly ovate-shaped shells with acuminated and convex umboes.As the first species described in China within the genus Abranda Iredale,1924,Abranda xui sp.***.has internal ligaments and thin,fragile,and translucent elliptical shells with fine radials on the surface.In this study,we reorganized the species currently contained in the two genera Pinguitellina and Abranda and created keys to the known species.We believe that numerous collected bivalve specimens have been overlooked in the South China Sea,and to date,mollusk has not been adequately sampled.Thus,further exploration and analysis are required to understand species diversity in this area.

Photonic neuromorphic architecture for tens-of-task lifelong learning

Scalable,high-capacity,and low-power computing architecture is the primary assurance for increasingly manifold and large-scale machine learning tasks.Traditional electronic artificial agents by conventional power-hungry processors have faced the issues of energy and scaling walls,hindering them from the sustainable performance improvement and iterative multi-task learning.Referring to another modality of light,photonic computing has been progressively applied in high-efficient neuromorphic systems.Here,we innovate a reconfigurable lifelong-learning optical neural network(L2 ONN),for highly-integrated tens-of-task machine intelligence with elaborated algorithm-hardware codesign.Benefiting from the inherent sparsity and parallelism in massive photonic connections,L2 ONN learns each single task by adaptively activating sparse photonic neuron connections in the coherent light field,while incrementally acquiring expertise on various tasks by gradually enlarging the activation.The multi-task optical features are parallelly processed by multi-spectrum representations allocated with different wavelengths.Extensive evaluations on freespace and on-chip architectures confirm that for the first time,L2 ONN avoided the catastrophic forgetting issue of photonic computing,owning versatile skills on challenging tens-of-tasks(vision classification,voice recognition,medical diagnosis,etc.)with a single model.Particularly,L2 ONN achieves more than an order of magnitude higher efficiency than the representative electronic artificial neural networks,and 14×larger capacity than existing optical neural networks while maintaining competitive performance on each individual task.The proposed photonic neuromorphic architecture points out a new form of lifelong learning scheme,permitting terminal/edge AI systems with light-speed efficiency and unprecedented scalability.

In multicellular organisms,developmental history of cell divisions and functional annotation of terminal cells can be organized into a cell lineage tree(CLT).The reconstruction of the CLT has long been a major goal in developmental biology and other related fields.Recent technological advancements,especially those in editable genomic barcodes and single-cell high-throughput sequencing,have sparked a new wave of experimental methods for reconstructing CLTs.Here we review the existing experimental approaches to the reconstruction of CLT,which are broadly categorized as either image-based or DNA barcode-based methods.In addition,we present a summary of the related literature based on the biological insight pro-vided by the obtained CLTs.Moreover,we discuss the challenges that will arise as more and better CLT data become available in the near future.Genomic barcoding-based CLT reconstructions and analyses,due to their wide applicability and high scalability,offer the potential for novel biological discoveries,especially those related to general and systemic properties of the developmental process.

Repurposing diacerein to suppress colorectal cancer growth by inhibiting the DCLK1/STAT3 signaling pathway

Double cortin-like kinase 1(DCLK1)exhibits high expression levels across various cancers,notably in human colorectal cancer(CRC).Diacerein,a clinically approved interleukin(IL)-1βinhibitor for osteoarthritis treatment,was evaluated for its impact on CRC proliferation and migration,alongside its underlying mechanisms,through both in vitro and in vivo analyses.The study employed MTT assay,colony formation,wound healing,transwell assays,flow cytometry,and Hoechst 33342 staining to assess cell proliferation,migration,and apoptosis.Additionally,proteome microarray assay and western blotting analyses were conducted to elucidate diacerein’s specific mechanism of action.Our findings indicate that diacerein significantly inhibits DCLK1-dependent CRC growth in vitro and in vivo.Through high-throughput proteomics microarray and molecular docking studies,we identified that diacerein directly interacts with DCLK1.Mechanistically,the suppression of p-STAT3 expression following DCLK1 inhibition by diacerein or specific DCLK1 siRNA was observed.Furthermore,diacerein effectively disrupted the DCLK1/STAT3 signaling pathway and its downstream targets,including MCL-1,VEGF,and survivin,thereby inhibiting CRC progression in a mouse model,thereby inhibiting CRC progression in a mouse model.

Neutrophils constitute a significant portion of the immune cells present within the tumor microenvironment.Evidence generated by our group has confirmed neutrophils to be an adverse independent prognostic factor affecting the disease-free survival of gastric carcinoma(GC)patients.1 Neutrophil extracellular traps(NETs),protein-covered DNA webs that interact with tumor cells in the tumor microenvironment,were detected in GC tissues and found to clinically associated with disease progression in our previous study.2 NETosis could be mediated by a series of agonists,such as interleukin 8(IL-8).3 However,the mechanism of IL-8 in the progression of GC occurs via NETs remains unclear.In this study,we identified that IL-8-mediated NETosis can promote the proliferation,migration,and invasion of GC cells in vitro,which can be abrogated by NET degradation through deoxyribonucleaseI(DNase I)or IL-8 suppression through neutralizing antibodies.Disruption of NETs by DNase I or blockade of the IL-8-CXC chemokine receptor 2(CXCR2)axis could result in growth retardation in mouse models.We also confirmed that NETs may influence the biological behavior of GC cells by up-regulating the expression of transcription factor IB-related factor 1(BRF1)and cyclin p21/p27.

Converting intercalation-type cathode in spent lithium-ion batteries into conversion-type cathode

The widespread applications of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)generate tons of spent LIBs.Therefore,recycling LIBs is of paramount importance in protecting the environment and saving the resources.Current commercialized LIBs mostly adopt layered oxides such as LiCoO_(2)(LCO)or LiNi_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(1-x-y)O_(2)(NMC)as the cathode materials.Converting the intercalation-type spent oxides into conversion-type cathodes(such as metal fluorides(MFs))offers a valid recycling strategy and provides substantially improved energy densities for LIBs.Herein,two typical Co-based cathodes,LCO and LiNi_(0.6)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.2)O_(2)(NMC622),in spent LIBs were successfully converted to CoF_(2) and(Ni_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(z))F_(2) cathodes by a reduction and fluorination technique.The as converted CoF_(2) and(Ni_(x)Co_(y)Mn_(z))F_(2) delivered cell energy densities of 650 and 700 Wh/kg,respectively.Advanced atomic-level electron microscopy revealed that the used LCO and NMC622 were converted to highly phase pure Co metal and Ni_(0.6)Co_(0.2)Mn_(0.2) alloys in the used graphite-assisted reduction roasting,simultaneously producing the important product of Li_(2)CO_(3) using only environment friendly solvent.Our study provided a versatile strategy to convert the intercalation-type Co-based cathode in the spent LIBs into conversion-type MFs cathodes,which offers a new avenue to recycle the spent LIBs and substantially increase the energy densities of next generation LIBs.

The development of implantable bioelectronics is driven by emerging applications including continuous health monitoring and human-machine interfacing.The mechanical mismatch between implanted bioelectronics and tissues not only compromises device accuracy,but also causes interference with tissues undesirably.To address this issue,it is necessary to develop ultrasoft and biocompatible fiber strain sensor with proper stretchability and sensitivity.Here,we fabricate a bacterial cellulose-based sensing fiber which possesses the stretchability and elastic modulus(~102 kPa)close to those of soft tissues.In addition,such fiber has high sensitivity to tiny tensile force/strain(8.8×10^(−3)N/2.5%)and low cell cytotoxicity.These excellent properties make the bacterial cellulose(BC)-based sensing fiber an excellent candidate of implantable bioelectric devices for monitoring subtle motions of organs.We demonstrate this by applying it for continuous monitoring of human pulse and bullfrog heartbeats.The(BC/oxBC)@PANI(ox=oxidized and PANI=polyaniline)fibers can further be woven into an array sensor and serve more complex sensing functions,such as multipoint force perception and shape recognition as demonstrated.

Blue light-induced rare-earth free phosphors for the highly sensitive and selective imaging of latent fingerprints based on enhanced hydrophobic interaction

The demand for in-situ detection of latent fingerprints(LFPs)in ways of high sensitivity,high selectivity,high contrast,low cost and user-friendly is still urgent.To overcome this challenge,a moisture-stable,red-emitting fluoride phosphor K_(3)AlF_(6):Mn^(4+)(KAF:Mn^(4+))with an organic hydrophobic skin was prepared.The phosphor has a uniform and superfine morphology with excellent luminescence properties.More importantly,this non-ultraviolet(UV)or non-near infrared(NIR)induced phosphor was proved to be an ideal fluorescent label for LFP imaging,which is both friendly for touch DNA analysis and compatible to forensic light sources.The well-defined ridge details with little background interference on various surfaces were presented by the oleic acid(OA)modified KAF:Mn^(4+)(KAF:Mn^(4+)-OA)phosphor in few seconds using the powder dusting method.To confirm the high selectivity of KAF:Mn^(4+)-OA for LFP imaging,an efficient quantitative evaluation method is proposed with the aid of ImageJ&Origin software.Due to the superiority of the Mn^(4+)-doped fluoride for the rapid imaging of LFPs in terms of lowcost,high compatibility and good availability,it is expected to be a promising candidate for forensic science as well as fluorescence imaging in other fields instead of rare earth luminescent materials.

在图像去雾领域中,目前多数去雾模型难以维持精度与效率的平衡,高精度的模型往往伴随着复杂的网络结构,而简单的网络结构又往往会导致低质量的结果.针对该问题提出一个基于雾浓度分类与暗-亮通道先验的多分支去雾模型,通过对带雾图像分类,使用复杂度不同的网络来处理不同雾浓度的图像,可在保证精度的同时提高计算效率.模型由轻量级雾图像分类器和基于暗-亮通道先验的多分支去雾网络2部分构成:前者将带雾图像分为轻雾、中雾、浓雾3类,输出雾浓度标签;后者包含3个结构相同、宽度不同的分支网络,根据雾浓度标签选择不同的分支网络处理不同雾浓度图像,恢复至无雾图像.提出一个新的雾浓度分类方法以及基于该方法的雾浓度分类损失函数,可根据带雾图像的暗通道特征和恢复难度,结合生成图像质量和模型计算效率,得到对带雾图像合理准确的分类结果,达到去雾效果和算力需求的良好平衡.提出新的暗通道与亮通道先验损失函数,用于约束分支去雾网络,可有效提高去雾精度.实验结果表明,模型能够以更低的网络参数量和复杂度得到更优的去雾结果.
