Comparison of Carbon Dynamics among Three Cool-Temperate Forests (<i>Quercus serrata, Larix kaempferi</i>and <i>Pinus densiflora</i>) under the Same Climate Conditions in Japan

To understand the role of forest ecosystems in the global carbon cycle, it is important to clarify the factors affecting the carbon balance of forest ecosystems. However, little is known about the direct effect of forest types, especially dominant species, on their different carbon dynamics. To clarify the effect of difference in forest types, an experiment was conducted in three forests, which were located in the same place and exposed to the same climate conditions. These forests were middle-aged (40 - 45 years) and dominated by Quercus serrata (Q forest), Larix kaempferi (L forest) and Pinus densiflora (P forest). Net primary production (NPP), heterotrophic respiration (HR) and net ecosystem production (NEP) were estimated in each forest, using a biometric method over one year. For NPP estimated from the annual growth of tree biomass (ΔB) and amount of litter (LF), P forest NPP (5.3 MgC·ha-1·yr-1) was higher than Q and L forest NPP (4.6 and 3.2 MgC·ha-1·yr-1). The difference was affected by a significant difference in ΔB (p = 0.032) and LF (p -1·yr-1) was higher than L and P forest (2.3 and 2.1 MgC·ha-1·yr-1). This difference could result from the amount of litter (respiration substrate) and chemical properties of litter (lability of decomposition). The NEP, which was calculated from the difference between NPP and HR, varied widely among the forest types (0.5, 0.9 and 3.2 MgC·ha-1·yr-1 in Q, L and P forests, respectively). The range of values among the forest types was comparable to those among age sequences and climate zones in previous studies. These results suggest that the difference in forest types (especially dominant species) can potentially lead to a large variation in carbon dynamics, in ecosystems located in the same place.

Multi-Value Sequence Generated over Sub Extension Field and Its Properties

Pseudo-random sequences with long period, low correlation, high linear complexity, and uniform distribution of bit patterns are widely used in the field of information security and cryptography. This paper proposes an approach for generating a pseudo-random multi-value sequence (including a binary sequence) by utilizing a primitive polynomial, trace function, and k-th power residue symbol over the sub extension field. All our previous sequences are defined over the prime field, whereas, proposed sequence in this paper is defined over the sub extension field. Thus, it’s a new and innovative perception to consider the sub extension field during the sequence generation procedure. By considering the sub extension field, two notable outcomes are: proposed sequence holds higher linear complexity and more uniform distribution of bit patterns compared to our previous work which defined over the prime field. Additionally, other important properties of the proposed multi-value sequence such as period, autocorrelation, and cross-correlation are theoretically shown along with some experimental results.

Association between Daily Living Walking Speed and Lifestyle and Physiological Factors in Older, Female Pokémon GO Players

Background: Walking speed is a reliable barometer of adverse health outcomes, particularly among older people. Few studies evaluated factors associated with daily actual walking speed, rather than that measured in a laboratory setting or self-reported data. Methods: In a joint effort with The Pokémon Company, we recruited study participants through a women’s magazine and analyzed data from 63 Pokémon GO players. We measured the true walking speed in daily life among older women using a data-gathering mobile application. Then, using questionnaire survey data collected on these participants in 2019, we estimated the relationship between walking speed and their lifestyle and physiological factors. In the analysis, we employed a bi-directional stepwise linear regression approach, with the Akaike information criterion (AIC) for variable selection. Results: The mean age of the 63 participants was 63.03 years (standard deviation, SD 7.46);the average walking speed was 4.56 km per hour (SD 1.54);and 52 (82.5%) and 55 (87.3%) participants answered that they had excellent/good health physically and mentally, respectively. After adjusted for covariates in a stepwise regression approach, we identified a significant association between −1.33 (95% confidence intervals −2.52 to −0.15) km/hour lower walking speed and the experience of outdoor falls within a year. We also demonstrated that the walking speed was 1.07 (0.33 to 1.81) km/hour faster for those who had played Pokémon GO before the study started. HMGB1 and HMGB2 Expression Patterns in Human Papillary Renal Cancers

High mobility group box (HMGB) proteins are nuclear nonhistone chromosomal proteins that bend DNA, bind preferentially to distorted DNA structures, and promote the assembly of site-specific DNA binding proteins. Recent reports indicate that HMGB1 has a dual function, a cytokine in addition to a nuclear protein. The increased expression of HMGB1 has been reported for several different tumors. Here, we assessed HMGB1 and HMGB2 expressions in two cases of papillary renal cell carcinoma. One case with pT1a, Grade 2 showed HMGB1 expression in the nucleus and cytosol and HMGB2 expression in the nucleus, but not in the cytosol. In the other case, there were three renal tumors, one of which was clear cell renal cell carcinoma with pT1a, Grade 3 and two were papillary renal cell carcinomas, Grade 2 (5 mmand2 mmin the diameter). Both HMGB1 and HMGB2 were expressed in the nucleus and cytosol of papillary carcinoma. In the clear cell carcinoma of this case, HMGB1 expression was stained both in the nucleus and cytosol, while HMGB2 was observed in the nucleus, but not in the cytosol. More samples need to be further investigated in order to draw conclusions concerning HMGB expressions in papillary renal cell carcinomas.

Reliability of Power Spectral Analysis of Surface Electromyogram Recorded during Sustained Vastus Medialis Isometric Contraction in Assessment of Muscle Fatigability

The aim of this study was to determine the within-day and between-days reliability of surface electromyographic (EMG) power spectral analysis in assessing fatigability of the vastus medialis (VM) muscle during knee and hip flexion under constant load application. The subjects were 13 healthy adult men free of knee abnormalities. Surface EMG was recorded from vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and vastus medialis longus (VML) during sustained isometric contractions at 60% of maximal voluntary contraction until exhaustion on the leg press machine (static leg press test). Linear regression analysis was applied to median frequency (MF) time series to calculate initial MF and MF slope. For VMO and VML, the initial MF showed moderate to high reliability, while the MF slope showed high reliability (Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = initial MF: 0.63 - 0.92, MF slope: 0.70 - 0.86). The results demonstrated that spectral analysis of surface EMG recording during isometric VM muscle contraction has high within-day and between-days reliability in the assessment of fatigability of the VMO and VML.

Prediction of lymph node metastasis and sentinel node navigation surgery for patients with early-stage gastric cancer

Accurate prediction of lymph node(LN) status is crucially important for appropriate treatment planning in patients with early gastric cancer(EGC). However,consensus on patient and tumor characteristics associated with LN metastasis are yet to be reached. Through systematic search,we identified several independent variables associated with LN metastasis in EGC,which should be included in future research to assess which of these variables remain as significant predictors of LN metastasis. On the other hand,even if we use these promising parameters,we should realize the limitation and the difficulty of predicting LN metastasis accurately. The sentinel LN(SLN) is defined as first possible site to receive cancer cells along the route of lymphatic drainage from the primary tumor. The absence of metastasis in SLN is believed to correlate with the absence of metastasis in downstream LNs. In this review,we have attempted to focus on several independent parameters which have close relationship between tumor and LN metastasis in EGC. In addition,we evaluated the history of sentinel node navigation surgery and the usefulness for EGC.

Polyarteritis nodosa diagnosed by surgically resected jejunal necrosis following acute abdomen

The differential diagnosis of acute abdomen is typically extremely broad in range, with vasculitis posing a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of acute abdomen. Here, we report a case of acute abdomen with bowel wall thickening limited to jejunum, accompanied by unexplained renal dysfunction. Later, the patient was diagnosed as having polyarteritis nodosa based on surgically resected jejunal necrosis. Despite aggressive treatment, including the use of steroid pulse therapy and continuous hemodiafiltration, the patient died. Although polyarteritis nodosa is extremely rare in patients with acute abdomen, acute abdomen is relatively common manifestation of that. And it is reported that involvement of small intestine suggests poorer prognosis. Our case highlights the importance of vasculitis as a differential diagnosis of patients with atypical acute abdomen. In this report, we not only review possible clues that might have led to an earlier diagnosis in this case, but also attempt to draw some lessons for treating similar cases in the future.
