Hyperacute experimental model of rat lung transplantation using a coronary shunt cannula

Investigation of VEGF and PDGF signals in vascular formation by 3D culture models using mouse ES cells

Vascular formation in vivo involves several processes and signal cascades subsequently occurring in the embryo. Several models by ES cells have been reported for analysis in vitro. We show here a 3D culture system using collagen gel (AteloCell) as a simple and useful system for investigating vascular formations and analyzing the roles of factors in vivo. Although VEGF and PDGF are growth factors with multi-potentials for vascular formation, their sequential roles have not been elucidated. We investigated the effects of VEGF and PDGF B signals for vascular formation by a 3D culture system that embedded embryoid bodies (EBs) from ES cells into a collagen gel. After embedding EBs in the collagen gel with a medium containing VEGF, EBs gave off CD105 immunopositive vessels as the initial step of vasculogenesis. When the factor in the culture medium for EBs was switched from VEGF to PDGF B after 5 days of culture, the morphological features of vessels varied, suggesting the occurrence of vascular-type differentiation. After 11 days of 3D culture, vessels in both groups cultured with VEGF alone and switching to VEGF B at day 5 showed Flk-1 immunoreactivity. Some blood vessels cultured with PDGF B after day 5 expressed either EphrinB2 (arteriole marker) or Flt-4 (lymphatic marker) immunoreactivity, but vessels cultured with VEGF alone exhibited neither of them. Vessels cultured with these two factors could not differentiate into a venous type. The present study indicates that VEGF is the initial signal for vasculogenesis, and that PDGF B is probably involved in vascular diversification.

Multicentric recurrence of intraductal papillary neoplasm of bile duct after spontaneous detachment of primary tumor:A case report

Primary site resection is superior for incurable metastatic colorectal cancer

AIM:To investigate survival in patients treated with FOLFOX followed by primary site resection or palliative surgery for incurable metastatic colorectal cancer. METHODS:Between 2001 and 2009,a total of 98 patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma and non-resectable metastases were diagnosed and treated with the new systemic agent chemotherapy regimen FOLFOX. Primary site resection was carried out in 38 patients, creation of a colostomy or bypass without resection was carried out in 36 patients,and 23 were not operated on because of advanced *** survival times of patients in different groups were analyzed. RESULTS:There were no differences between the patients regarding their general condition,concurrent disease,or tumor stage according to AJCC *** median survivals of the three groups were 30.6,20.8,and 12.7 mo(log-rank P value<0.05),*** postoperative complication rate was higher in the primary site resection group than in the palliative surgery group. CONCLUSION:The results indicate that there are benefits from primary site resection for incurable metastatic colorectal cancer with systemic chemotherapy.

An assembly robot needs to be capable of executing an assembly task robustly under various *** attain this goal,we use a task sequence tree model originally proposed for manual *** model regards an assembly task under uncertainties as a transformation of the contact state *** concept may contain several contact states with probabilities but these are transformed through a series of task elements into the contact state concept having only the goal state at the *** transformed contact state concept can be classified according to the terminal condition of each task ***,the whole assembly task can be designed as a tree-shaped contingent strategy called a task sequence *** paper proposes a systematic approach for reconfiguring a task sequence tree model for application to a robotic assembly *** addition,by taking a 2D peg-in-hole insertion task to be performed by a robot equipped with a force sensor as an example,we confirm that the proposed approach can provide a robust motion strategy for the task and that the robot can actually execute the task robustly under bounded uncertainty according to the strategy.

Depth of invasion to the bladder wall as a prognostic factor and its association with circulating cell-free DNA levels in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer

Background:Radical cystectomy(RC)is the standard surgical treatment for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer,but the prognosis is not favorable,and new prognostic factors need to be *** investigated the potential of depth of invasion(DOI)as a prognostic factor in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer who underwent ***,we examined the asso-ciation between preoperative levels of circulating cell-free DNA and DOI.Materials and methods:We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent RC between January 2007 and December 2017;those who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy were *** of invasion was measured using hematoxylin-eosin-stained RC specimens.Results:Of the 121 patients selected,41(33.9％)were eligible for *** median follow-up period was 14 months and mean DOI was 17 mm(range,2-75 mm).Long DOI(＞17 mm)was significantly associated with shorter progression-free survival(hazard ratio,14.5;95％confidence interval,3.9-53.97,p＜0.0001)and cancer-specific survival(hazard ratio,18.97;95％confidence interval,4.04-88.99,p=0.0002)compared with short *** analysis revealed that DOI was an independent risk factor for cancer-specific *** levels of circulating cell-free DNA were significantly higher in patients with a longer DOI than in those with short DOI(65 vs.20 ng/mL,respectively;p=0.028).Conclusions:Depth of invasion predicted with levels of circulating cell-free DNA and thus could be a useful prognostic factor.

A case report of endocrine cell carcinoma in the sigmoid colon with inferior mesenteric vein tumor embolism

We report a case of endocrine cell carcinoma in the sigmoid colon with inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) tumor embolism. A 79-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with narrowing of the stools. We performed colonoscopy, computed tomography and positron emission tomography, which disclosed sigmoid colon cancer with IMV tumor embolism. She underwent sigmoidectomy and lymph node dissection. The tumor was diagnosed as endocrine cell carcinoma (type 4, pSS, med, INFα, v3, n1, stage chromographin A, synaptophysin, cytokeratin 20 and mucicarmine showed partial staining, and CD56 was totally reactive. Three months after operation multiple liver metastases appeared. She was treated with chemotherapy of cisplatin (CDDP) + irinotecan (CPT11). This case highlights the aggressiveness of endocrine cell carcinoma with tumor embolism, and it is essential to establish an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Novel Biological Based Method for Robot Navigation and Localization

The capability and reliability are crucial characteristics of mobile robots while navigating in complex environments. These robots are expected to perform many useful tasks which can improve the quality of life greatly. Robot localization and decisionmaking are the most important cognitive processes during navigation. However, most of these algorithms are not efficient and are challenging tasks while robots navigate through complex environments. In this paper,we propose a biologically inspired method for robot decision-making, based on rat’s brain signals. Rodents accurately and rapidly navigate in complex spaces by localizing themselves in reference to the surrounding environmental landmarks. Firstly, we analyzed the rats’ strategies while navigating in the complex Y-maze, and recorded local field potentials(LFPs), *** recorded LFPs were processed and different features were extracted which were used as the input in the artificial neural network(ANN) to predict the rat’s decision-making in each junction. The ANN performance was tested in a real robot and good performance is achieved. The implementation of our method on a real robot, demonstrates its abilities to imitate the rat’s decision-making and integrate the internal states with external sensors, in order to perform reliable navigation in complex maze.
