The objective of this survey was to determine the sexual and reproductive health needs of conservative and/or economically challenged adolescent girls. A total of 310 subjects (16.5 ± 2.2 years old), attending three private institutes teaching Islamic matter and the holy Quran and two private institutes teaching carpet-weaving in Erzurum, Turkey, were interviewed between November 2004 and February 2005. The ques-tionnaire covered knowledge on reproductive health and sexual matters to attain their feelings prior to their first menarche, their practices during menstruation, and their awareness of gynecological and sexually transmitted dis-eases as well as their attitudes toward and re-sponsiveness to domestic violence. Their re-sponses showed that these issues were con-sidered taboo and/or embarrassing to share. Also, a considerable percentage of the girls had no or limited knowledge on reproductive health and sexual matters and mismanaged gyneco-logical problems and domestic violence. More-over, those had knowledge revealed that their sources were non-scientific information from unprofessional individuals. In conclusion, the conservative and/or economically challenged adolescent girls who are not attending regular high schools need professional lectures on re-productive health and sexual matters.

To the editor： A-51-year old male with no relevant medical history was admitted to our department due to palpitation lasting for a few months. Duration of tachycardia was 1-2 minutes and resulting with presyncope. Physical examination and laboratory tests were normal, blood pressure measured as 115/60 mmHg （1 mmHg=0.133 kPa） and the heart rate was 85 beats per minute.

Recent data indicate that hepatic angiogenesis, regardless of the etiology, takes place in chronic liver diseases(CLDs) that are characterized by inflammat ion and progre s s ive f ibros is. B e c aus e ant iangiogenic therapy has been found to be efficient in the prevention of fibrosis in experimental models of CLDs, it is suggested that blocking angiogenesis could be a promising therapeutic option in patients with advanced fibrosis. Consequently, efforts are being directed to revealing the mechanisms involved in angiogenesis during the progression of liver fibrosis. Literature evidences indicate that hepatic angiogenesis and fibrosis are closely related in both clinical andexperimental conditions. Hypoxia is a major inducer of angiogenesis together with inflammation and hepatic stellate cells. These profibrogenic cells stand at the intersection between inflammation, angiogenesis and fibrosis and play also a pivotal role in angiogenesis. This review mainly focuses to give a clear view on the relevant features that communicate angiogenesis with progression of fibrosis in CLDs towards the-end point of cirrhosis that may be translated into future therapies. The pathogenesis of hepatic angiogenesis associated with portal hypertension, viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease are also discussed to emphasize the various mechanisms involved in angiogenesis during liver fibrogenesis.

AIM:To evaluate endoscopic findings and the prevalence of H pylori in patients with Behcet's disease (BD) who have upper gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS:The patients with BD diagnosed according to the International Study Group and followed up in the Department of Dermatology and other related departments and who had any upper gastrointestinal complaints,were included in this study. Forty-five patients with BD and 40 patients in the control group were evaluated by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and two biopsied specimens were taken during endoscopy for H pylori . A two-week triple therapy for H pylori eradication was administered to H pylori positive patients. Two months after the treatment,the patients were evaluated by urea-breath test for eradication control. RESULTS:Patients with BD had a mean age of 36.2 ± 11.4 years (18-67 years). The mean follow-up time was 35 ± 14 mo (16-84 mo). Aphthous or deep ulcer in esophagus,stomach and duodenum had never been confirmed by endoscopic examination. Most gastric lesions were gastric erosion (40%) and the most duodenal lesions were duodenitis (17.5%) in two groups. H pylori was positive in 33 patients (73.3%) with BD. The two-week triple eradication therapy was successful in 75% of the patients. There was no difference between the groups in respect to prevalence of H pylori (73.3% vs 75%,P > 0.05),and eradication rate (75% vs 70%,P > 0.05). CONCLUSION:Endoscopic findings,eradication rate and prevalence of H pylori were similar in patients withBD and control group.

Evaluation the Vickers Hardness of Denture Base Materials

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Vickers Hardness of four different denture base materials. Four different denture base materials were used in this study: Heat-cured pink acrylic resin, self-cured acrylic resin, heat-cured clear acrylic resin and polyamide denture base materials. To-tally 80 disc shaped samples which 2 mm thickness and 40 mm diameter were prepared. The samples were stored in distilled water after polished. Then, Vickers Hardness test was performed with TMTeck HV-1000B (200 gram at 15 second). The statistically analysis of obtained data was performed with use one-way analysis of variance test. The results showed that the highest Vickers Hardness value (18.57 HV) was identified in heat-cured (pink) acrylic resin, the lowest Vickers Hardness value (9.62 HV) was identified in polyamide denture base materials. The result of one-way analysis of variance test showed that there were statistically very highly significant differences between four denture base materials of Vickers Hardness (p < 0.001). The obtained data presented that the self-cured denture base acrylic resin was the hardnest denture base materials.

In this study, a new route to produce pure and composite ZnO-MgO thin films has been presented. In the process the pure ZnO thin films were the starting point, ending up with MgO by doping various percentages (from 0% to 100%) of Mg with the help of sol-gel spin coating technique. The crystal phases in all doping levels have been obtained when the samples annealed at 600℃ for a duration of 6 hours. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs and UV-Vis absorption spectra have been performed to elucidate the composed film structures.

Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy in more developed countries. Most endometrial carcinomas cases are diagnosed at an early stage with a tumor confined to the uterine corpus. Although most patients are cured by surgery alone, about 15% - 20% with no signs of locally advanced or metastatic disease at primary treatment recurs, with limited responsiveness to systemic therapy. Although it has a comparatively low mortality rate compared with other gynaecological cancers, it is capable of aggressive behaviour. Diagnosis at an early stage is the most important determinant of survival. Discovery of new diagnostic biomarkers/panels for early diagnosis of endometrial cancer is one of the main challenges of modern medicine. For endometrial cancers, there are no established serum markers. We will review the present knowledge regarding tumor markers, assessing how such markers could be applied to address in screening, diagnosis and monitoring of endometrial carcinoma.

Controlled Release of Naproxen Sodium from Supermacroporous Cryogels

Cryogels are gel matrices that have interconnected macropores and are formed in freezing-thawing systems. These interconnected macropores give elasticity to cryogels. Transdermal controlled-release systems can be used to deliver drugs with short biological half-life and can maintain plasma levels of very potent drugs within a narrow therapeutic range for prolonged periods. In this study, cryogels have been used in a different area—-transdermal controlled-release system, to obtain controlled drug release medium. For this purpose, naproxen sodium has been selected as a model drug. Naproxen, a propionic acid derivative, is a NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug). For controlled releasing of naproxen sodium, cryogels that have naproxen sodium in macropores have been prepared in sheet form for local application. Acrylamide based cryogel bands have been synthesized by free radical cryogelation process. These cryogel bands have different pore size and includes naproxen sodium in their pores. This cryogel material has been characterized by swelling tests and SEM. Then, releasing of naproxen sodium from cryogels has been investigated at two different pH values, 7.4 and 5.5. According to experimental data, it has seen that these cryogel matrices that including naproxen sodium in macropores could be used in controlled drug releasing systems as bandages or other transdermal controlled releasing agents at room temperature.

Diffusion Weighted MRI: A Practical and Quick Approach to Evaluate Brain Death

It is significantly important to define brain death with greater precision in terms of timing and accuracy. While in the past determination of brain death is simply based on conventional angiography, now with major technological advances the Diffusion-weighted MRI is a new method sensitive to cerebral ischemia which gives on the molecular level the deeply ischemic nature of the changes. Its value in brain death has been shown in various studies. In our study, we did a comparative overview of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) considering the contribution of ADC measurements from brain parenchyma, in the patients diagnosed with brain death by clinical criteria. We studied 16 brain deaths in serial studies, in which there is a prominent difference between the white and gray matter ADC values on diffusion MRI. In the postmortem brains, ADC values comparing with the normal brain parenchyma, were reduced 65% in white matter and 42% in gray matter. Also, the patients’ ADC values of gray and white matter were significantly lower than those of irreversible brain-ischemia patients’ in ADC values. In comparison to most of the other studies, in our study population studied is large, in which is a comprehensive study that results consistent with the literature. As a result we propose that in the definition of brain death Diffusion MRI and ADC measurements are reliable to show diffuse ishemic changes of brain parenchyma.
