Mesenchymal stem cells and the neuronal microenvironment in the area of spinal cord injury

Cell-based technologies are used as a therapeutic strategy in spinal cord injury(SCI). Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs), which secrete various neurotrophic factors and cytokines, have immunomodulatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects, modulate reactivity/phenotype of astrocytes and the microglia, thereby promoting neuroregeneration seem to be the most promising. The therapeutic effect of MSCs is due to a paracrine mechanism of their action, therefore the survival of MSCs and their secretory phenotype is of particular importance. Nevertheless, these data are not always reported in efficacy studies of MSC therapy in SCI. Here, we provide a review with summaries of preclinical trials data evaluating the efficacy of MSCs in animal models of SCI. Based on the data collected, we have tried(1) to establish the behavior of MSCs after transplantation in SCI with an evaluation of cell survival, migration potential, distribution in the area of injured and intact tissue and possible differentiation;(2) to determine the effects MSCs on neuronal microenvironment and correlate them with the efficacy of functional recovery in SCI;(3) to ascertain the conditions under which MSCs demonstrate their best survival and greatest efficacy.

The paper is concerned with a variant of the continuous-time finite state Markov game of control and stopping where both players can affect transition rates,while only one player can choose a stopping time.The dynamic programming principle reduces this problem to a system of ODEs with unilateral constraints.This system plays the role of the Bellman equation.We show that its solution provides the optimal strategies of the players.Additionally,the existence and uniqueness theorem for the deduced system of ODEs with unilateral constraints is derived.

Most human-secreted and membrane-bound proteins have covalently attached oligosaccharide chains or glycans.Glycosylation influences the physical and chemical properties of proteins,as well as their biological functions.Unsurprisingly,alterations in protein glycosylation have been implicated in a growing number of human diseases,and glycans are increasingly being considered as potential therapeutic targets,an essential part of therapeutics,and biomarkers.Although glycosylation pathways are biochemically well-studied,little is known about the networks of genes that guide the cell-and tissue-specific regulation of these biochemical reactions in humans in vivo.The lack of a detailed understanding of the mechanisms regulating glycome variation and linking the glycome to human health and disease is slowing progress in clinical applications of human glycobiology.Two of the tools that can provide much sought-after knowledge of human in vivo glycobiology are human genetics and genomics,which offer a powerful data-driven agnostic approach for dissecting the biology of complex traits.This review summarizes the current state of human populational glycogenomics.In Section 1,we provide a brief overview of the N-glycan’s structural organization,and in Section 2,we give a description of the major blood plasma glycoproteins.Next,in Section 3,we summarize,systemize,and generalize the results from current N-glycosylation genome-wide association studies(GWASs)that provide novel knowledge of the genetic regulation of the populational variation of glycosylation.Until now,such studies have been limited to an analysis of the human blood plasma N-glycome and the N-glycosylation of immunoglobulin G and transferrin.While these three glycomes make up a rather limited set compared with the enormous multitude of glycomes of different tissues and glycoproteins,the study of these three does allow for powerful analysis and generalization.Finally,in Section 4,we turn to genes in the established loci,paying particular attention to genes with stron

World cities in terms of the sustainable development concept

The article considers the issue of the world cities in terms of sustainable development.The population has been increasing in such intensive rates never reached during the middle of the 20th century.The expansion of the cities indicates,on the one hand,the growth of the world’s general socio-economic development,on the other hand,it raises a number of economic,social and environmental problems.The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current state and prospects of the world cities in terms of the sustainable development concept,to identify opportunities,threats,strengths and weaknesses of the world cities,to determine the role of cities in the con-temporary global world and consider further research of the world’s cities.The authors analyzed the world cities rankings and noted that highly developed cities have more chances to quickly implement the sustainable devel-opment concept compared to medium-sized cities due to larger financial resources.The authors built a SWOT analysis of the world cities transformation in terms of the sustainable development concept,identified strengths,weaknesses,opportunities and threats.According to the results of the SWOT analysis,the authors established that sustainable development of cities requires significant investments,particularly in the social sphere develop-ment,purification,and preservation of urban nature from the anthropogenic impacts.The research result is the systematization of the sustainable development criteria used in compiling the world cities rankings,determining the possibilities of the contemporary cities transition to the sustainable development concept.

An Optimal Scheme for WSN Based on Compressed Sensing

Wireless sensor networks(WSNs)is one of the renowned ad hoc network technology that has vast varieties of applications such as in computer networks,bio-medical engineering,agriculture,industry and many more.It has been used in the internet-of-things(IoTs)applications.A method for data collecting utilizing hybrid compressive sensing(CS)is developed in order to reduce the quantity of data transmission in the clustered sensor network and balance the network load.Candidate cluster head nodes are chosen first from each temporary cluster that is closest to the cluster centroid of the nodes,and then the cluster heads are selected in order based on the distance between the determined cluster head node and the undetermined candidate cluster head node.Then,each ordinary node joins the cluster that is nearest to it.The greedy CS is used to compress data transmission for nodes whose data transmission volume is greater than the threshold in a data transmission tree with the Sink node as the root node and linking all cluster head nodes.The simulation results demonstrate that when the compression ratio is set to ten,the data transfer volume is reduced by a factor of ten.When compared to clustering and SPT without CS,it is reduced by 75%and 65%,respectively.When compared to SPT with Hybrid CS and Clustering with hybrid CS,it is reduced by 35%and 20%,respectively.Clustering and SPT without CS are compared in terms of node data transfer volume standard deviation.SPT with Hybrid CS and clustering with Hybrid CS were both reduced by 62%and 80%,respectively.When compared to SPT with hybrid CS and clustering with hybrid CS,the latter two were reduced by 41%and 19%,respectively.

Application of aluminum foil for “strain sensing” at fatigue damage evaluation of carbon fiber composite

Surface layer of a loaded solid is an individual structural level of deformation that was shown numerously within concept of physical mesomechanics.This gives rise to advance in its deformation development under loading as well as allows using this phenomenon to sense the strain induced structure changes.It is of specific importance for composite materials since they are highly heterogeneous while estimating their mechanical state is a topical applied problem.Fatigue tests of carbon fiber composite specimens were carried out for cyclic deformation estimation with the use of strain sensors made of thin(80μm)aluminum foil glued to the specimen’s surface.The surface images were captured by DSLR camera mounted onto an optical microscope.Strain relief to form during cyclic loading was numerically estimated using different parameters:dispersion,mean square error,universal image quality index,fractal dimension and energy of Fourier spectrum.The results are discussed in view of deformation mismatch in thin foil and bulk specimen and are offered to be applied for the development of Structural Health Monitoring(SHM)approach.

Computation of Fisher–Gale Equilibrium by Auction

We study the Fisher model of a competitive market from the algorithmic perspective.For that,the related convex optimization problem due to Gale and Eisenberg(Ann Math Stat 30(1):165–168,1959)is used.The latter problem is known to yield a Fisher equilibrium under some structural assumptions on consumers’utilities,e.g.,homogeneity of degree 1,homotheticity.Our goal is to examine applicability of the convex optimization framework by departing from these traditional assumptions.We just assume the concavity of consumers’utility functions.For this case,we suggest a novel concept of Fisher–Gale equilibrium by using consumers’utility prices.The prices of utility transfer the utility of consumption bundle to a common numéraire.We develop a subgradient-type algorithm from Convex Analysis to compute a Fisher–Gale equilibrium via Gale’s approach.In order to decentralize prices,we additionally implement the auction design,i.e.,consumers settle and update their individual prices and producers sell at the highest offer price.Our price adjustment is based on a tatonnement procedure,i.e.,the prices change proportionally to consumers’individual excess supplies.Historical averages of consumption are shown to clear the market of goods.Our algorithm is justified by a global rate of convergence.In the worst case,the number of price updates needed to achieve anε-tolerance is proportional to 1/ε^(2).

Variations in defect substructure and fracture surface of commercially pure aluminum under creep in weak magnetic field

Commercially pure polycrystalline aluminum of grade A85, as a test material, is investigated. Using scanning and transmission electron microscopy the aluminum fine structure and fracture surface are analyzed. Fractures are studied in the regime of creep with and without a simultaneous effect of 0.3-T magnetic field. It is found that the application of a magnetic field in a linear stage of creep leads to substructure imperfection increasing. Furthermore, the magnetic field effect on aluminum in the process of creep causes the average scalar density of dislocations to increase and induces the process of dislocation loop formation to strengthen. Fractographic investigation of the fracture surface shows that in the fibrous fracture zone the average size of plastic fracture pits decreases more than twice under creep in the condition of external magnetic field compared with in the conventional experimental condition. In a shear zone, the magnetic field causes the average size of fracture pits to decrease. Experimental data obtained in the research allow us to conclude that the magnetic field effect on aluminum in the process of creep leads to the fracture toughness value of the material decreasing, which will affect the state of defect substructure of the volume and surface layer of the material. The influence of the magnetic field is analyzed on the basis of the magneto-plasticity effect.

以碳纳米球为模板,采用硬模板法制得多孔Co_3O_4中空纳米球。分别采用SEM、XRD、FTIR、BET和XPS对Co_3O_4纳米球的形貌和结构进行表征。通过改变前驱体浓度和陈化反应时间调控Co_3O_4中空纳米球的空间结构及气敏性能。结果表明:在前驱体浓度为0.1mol/L、陈化时间为48h时,得到的Co_3O_4中空纳米球的表面呈疏松多孔结构。Co_3O_4中空纳米球直径约为500nm,由40nm的Co_3O_4纳米粒子组成。室温下,由该材料组装的气敏传感器对浓度为100×10^(-6)～0.5×10^(-6)的NH_3有较好的气敏性能;对浓度为100×10^(-6)的NH_3响应灵敏度高达155.8%,响应时间为1.3s。该气体传感器对NH_3的最低检测限为0.5×10^(-6)。
