Myxomycete diversity in the Tarim basin and eastern Tian-Shan,Xinjiang Prov.,China

We report the results of a survey for myxomycetes in the Chinese province of Xinjiang,covering the northern part of the Tarim basin and the eastern Tian-Shan *** in the hyperarid Tarim basin focused on monospecific Tugai forests;these are park-like stands of the phreatophyte Populus *** a transect from the Tarim basin to the mountains,trees vanish outside the basin,but reoccur at ca.1,400 m elevation as monospecific forests of Picea schrenkiana;the second focal area of the *** a total of 362 substrate samples(245 from the Tarim basin,177 from the mountains)we obtained 477 determinable records of myxomycetes,plus a total of 206 field collections,the latter almost exclusively from the spruce forests in the *** the 80 taxa recorded 53 are represented by field collections,and 32 were found in moist chamber cultures;with a very low overlap in species assemblages found in the field and in *** receiving less than 50 mm annual precipitation,corticolous myxomycetes were common in the Tugai forests,with Physarum pseudonotabile ***.,Didymium anellus,Echinostelium colliculosum and Protophysarum phloiogenum as the most common *** to the Tarim basin(21 taxa)the mountains were much richer in myxomycetes(75 taxa),although the diversity recovered from cultures was comparable(21 vs.28 taxa).Most species from the mountains fruited on decaying spruce,often collected under or even inside the logs due to the extremely dry *** results suggest first that there is no lower limit of annual precipitation for myxomycetes,as long as at least some days with nightly dew fall allow these organisms to complete their life ***,the two examples of surprisingly diverse myxomycete assemblages from monospecific forests demonstrate,that species richness of this group is not necessarily connected with plant diversity of the *** survey is the most eastern of a large-scale study of myxomycete diversity throughout M

Current climate change effects on the ground thermal regime in Central Yakutia

The evolution of ground thermal state has been studied to assess impacts of current climatic warming on permafrost in Central Yakutia. The analysis of long-term data of regional weather stations has revealed one of the highest increasing trends in mean annual air temperature in northern Russia. A forecast of surface air temperature fluctuations has been made by applying a frequency analysis method. Monitoring of ground thermal conditions allows us to identify inter-annual and long-term variability among a wide range of natural conditions. Experimental research has indicated a long-term dynamics of ground thermal state evolution： ground temperatures at the depth of zero annual amplitude and seasonally thawed layer depth. Long-term variability of thaw depth shows near-zero to weak positive trends in small valleys in contrast to weak negative trends on slopes. With significant climatic warming, the thermal state of near-surface layers of permafrost demonstrates steadiness. Anthropogenic impacts on ground thermal regime in various terrain types have been qualitatively evaluated. Clear-cutting, ground cover stripping, and post-fire deforestation in inter-alas type terrains result in a significant increase of temperature and seasonal ground thaw depth, as well as adverse cryogenic processes. The dynamics of mean annual ground temperature in slash and burn sites have been evaluated in reference to stages of successive vegetation recovery.

Confirmation of Novel Quantitative Trait Loci for Seed Dormancy at Different Ripening Stages in Rice

Seed dormancy contributes resistance to pre-harvest sprouting. Effects on respective quantitative trait loci （QTLs） for dormancy should be assessed by using fresh seeds before germinability altered through storage. We investigated QTLs related to seed dormancy using backcross inbred lines derived from a cross between Nipponbare and Kasalath. Four putative QTLs for seed dormancy were detected immediately after harvest using composite interval mapping. These putative QTLs were mapped near C1488 on chromosome 3 （qSD-3.1）, R2171 on chromosome 6 （qSD-6.1）, R1245 on chromosome 7 （qSD-7.1） and C488 on chromosome 10 （qSD-IO.1）. Kasalath alleles promoted dormancy for qSD-3.1, qSD-6.1 and qSD-7.1, and the respective proportions of phenotypic variation explained by each QTL were 12.9%, 9.3% and 8.1%. We evaluated the seed dormancy harvested at different ripening stages during seed development using chromosome segment substitution lines （CSSLs） to confirm gene effects. The germination rates of CSSL27 and CSSL28 substituted with the region including qSD-6.1 were significantly lower than those of Nipponbare and other CSSLs at the late ripening stage. Therefore, qSD-6.1 is considered the most effective novel QTL for pre-harvest sprouting resistance among the QTLs detected in this study.

Data obtained on conodont distribution in the Permian-Triassic Sovetashen Section of Transcaucasia provide further limitations on the age of the carbon-isotopic anomalies discovered by Baud et al. (1989). The significance of Caucasian sections for working out the carbon-isotope standard for the Upper Permian and Lower Triassic (Induan) is shown. Original data on carbon-isotope composition of bivalve and brachiopod shells from Permian sediments of North-Eastern Russia (Omolon and Okhotsk areas) have been obtained, which may be used for their correlation.

A NUMERICAL METHOD FOR THE SIMULATION OF FREE SURFACE FLOWS OF VISCOPLASTIC FLUID IN 3D

In this paper we study a numerical method for the simulation of free surface flows of viscoplastic （Herschel-Bulkley） fluids. The approach is based on the level set method for capturing the free surface evolution and on locally refined and dynamically adapted octree cartesian staggered grids for the discretization of fluid and level set equations. A regu- larized model is applied to handle the non-differentiability of the constitutive relations. We consider an extension of the stable approximation of the Newtonian flow equations on staggered grid to approximate the viscoplastic model and level-set equations if the free boundary evolves and the mesh is dynamically refined or coarsened. The numerical method is first validated for a Newtonian case. In this case, the convergence of numerical solutions is observed towards experimental data when the mesh is refined. Further we compute several 3D viscoplastic Herschel-Bulkley fluid flows over incline planes for the dam-break problem. The qualitative comparison of numerical solutions is done versus experimental investigations. Another numerical example is given by computing the freely oscillating viscoplastic droplet, where the motion of fluid is driven by the surface tension forces. Altogether the considered techniques and algorithms （the level-set method, compact discretizations on dynamically adapted octree cartesian grids, regularization, and the surface tension forces approximation） result in efficient approach to modeling viscoplastic free-surface flows in possibly complex 3D geometries.

Effects of laying on of hands with and without a spiritual context on pain and functionality of older women with knee osteoarthritis:study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Background： Laying on of hands （LooH） is a culturally-accepted therapy in several traditions. In Brazil, ＂Spiritism＂（third-largest religious tradition in number of followers） uses LooH with the name of ＂Spiritist Passe＂（SP）. However, there are few studies assessing SP＇s role in medical outcomes. The present study aims to investigate the effects of LooH, with and without a spiritual context, on pain, joint stiffness, and functional capacity of older women （≥60 years old） with knee osteoarthritis （KOA）. Methods/design： In this triple-blind, prospective randomized controlled trial, older women with KOA are assigned to three groups： LooH with a spiritual context group, LooH group without a spiritual context, and a control group receiving no intervention. Patients are assessed by a blinded researcher at baseline, 8 weeks, and 16 weeks. Pain, joint stiffness, and functional capacity are assessed using Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index. Other measures such as anxiety, depression, gait speed, and quality of life will also be assessed. To detect differences between groups, a post-intervention com- parison between the three groups and a mean change （post-pre） comparison among the three groups will be done using analysis of variance. All statistical analyses will be performed using an intention-to-treat approach and a per-protocol analysis. Discussion： A pragmatic design using SP, LooH without spiritual context, and no LooH may provide further scientific evidence on SP＇s feasibility and efficacy for KOA patients.

Streptococcus mutans activates the AIM2, NLRP3 and NLRC4 inflammasomes in human THP-1 macrophages

Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans), a major aetiologic agent of dental caries, is involved in systemic diseases, such as bacterial endocarditis, if it enters the bloodstream through temporary bacteraemia. Interleukin(IL)-1β, a proinflammatory cytokine, is related to the host defences against pathogens, and its synthesis, maturation, and secretion are tightly regulated by the activation of the inflammasome, an inflammatory signalling complex. This study examined the signalling mechanism of IL-1β secretion and the inflammasome pathway induced by S. mutans to explain the molecular mechanism through which systemic infection by oral streptococci can occur. After infection of THP-1 cells with S. mutans, the expression of inflammasome components was detected using various methods. S. mutans induced IL-1β secretion via caspase-1 activation, and S. mutans-induced IL-1β secretion required absent in melanoma(AIM2), NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3(NLRP3) and NLR family CARD domain-containing 4(NLRC4)inflammasome activation. In particular, the S. mutans-induced NLRP3 inflammasome was mediated by adenosine triphosphate(ATP) release, potassium depletion and lysosomal damage. Our study provides novel insight into the innate immune response against S. mutans infection.
