3D printing of fine-grained aluminum alloys through extrusion-based additive manufacturing:Microstructure and property characterization

Additive manufacturing(AM)has the potential to transform manufacturing by enabling previously un-thinkable products,digital inventory and delivery,and distributed manufacturing.Here we presented an extrusion-based metal AM method(refer to“SoftTouch”depositionin thefiledpatent)thatis suitablefor making the metal feedstock flowable prior to the deposition through dynamic recrystallization induced grain refinement at elevated temperatures.The flowable metal was extruded out of the printer head like a paste for building dense metal parts with fine equiaxed grains and wrought mechanical properties.Off-the-shelf metal rods were used as feedstock and the printing process was completed in an open-air environment,avoiding pricy powders and costly inert or vacuum conditions.The resulting multi-layer de-posited 6061 aluminum alloys yield strength and ductility comparable to wrought 6061 aluminum alloys after the same T6 heat treatment.The extrusion-based metal AM method can also be advanced as green manufacturing technologies for fabricating novel alloys and composites,adding novel features to existing parts,repairing damaged metal parts,and welding advanced metals for supporting sustainable manufac-turing,in addition to being developed into a cost-effective manufacturing process for the fabrication of dense metal of complex structural forms.

How Do Young Children Manage Their Reputation among Peers?

Young children’s reputation management is closely related to their social development.The purpose of our study is to examine the interaction between theory of mind and partner choice on children’s reputation management.Participants consisted of 270 children who were 3 to 5 years old.First,we measured participants’theory of mind capabilities using the unexpected location task and unexpected content task and then randomly divided the participants into the control group,non-partner–choice group,and partner-choice group.We measured reputation management by comparing children’s willingness to share and sharing behavior between these groups.Thefindings are as follows:(1)Children from ages 3 to 5 demonstrated reputation management,and their reputation management followed a significant developmental trend.The reputation management of 4-to 5-year-old children was significantly better than that of 3-year-old children.(2)Scores on the theory of mind tasks positively predicted children’s reputation management.(3)Partner choice affected children’s reputation management.In the partner-choice group,children’s reputation management was more apparent.(4)Partner choice did moderate the relationship between theory of mind and children’s reputation management.In the partner-choice group,theory of mind had a stronger predictive effect on children’s reputation management.

Effects of 5-Azacytidine(AZA)on the Growth,Antioxidant Activities and Germination of Pellicle Cysts of Scrippsiella acuminata(Dinophyceae)

In this study,we investigated the effects of different concentrations of 5-azacytidine(AZA),a DNA methyltransferase in-hibitor,on the growth,antioxidant activities and germination of pellicle cysts of Scrippsiella acuminata.The purpose of this study is to understand the toxic effects of AZA on marine microalgae,and to demonstrate the effect of DNA methyltransferase inhibitors on the germination of pellicle cysts.Results showed that AZA inhibited the growth of S.acuminata significantly,and displaced a clear dose-dependent inhibition trend with the 96h EC50 of 146.77μmolL^(-1)(35.84mgL^(-1)).Pellicle cysts of S.acuminata were less sensitive to AZA than the vegetative cells,and the EC50 value of AZA to the germination of pellicle cysts of S.acuminata was 8.08mmolL^(-1)(1.97g L^(-1)).After exposed to AZA,the antioxidant activities in S.acuminata responded rapidly and significantly.Among them,soluble pro-tein and superoxide dismutase(SOD)were more sensitive to AZA,and significant promotions occurred after exposed to 10μmolL^(-1)AZA for 24h.Meanwhile,malondialdehyde(MDA)contents in algal cells did not change significantly after exposed to low concen-trations of AZA,but increased firstly and then decreased under high concentration of AZA.The glutathione(GSH)levels in S.acu-minata increased significantly under high concentrations of AZA,and remained unchanged at low concentrations of AZA.The results suggested that the enhanced protein level and SOD activity of S.acuminata eliminated reactive oxygen species(ROS)to a certain ex-tent,and thus protected algal cells against damages of ROS caused by AZA.

Dynamic leakage mechanism of gas drainage borehole and engineering application

Borehole leakage not only affects the gas drainage effect but also presents considerable risk to human security. For the research on the leakage mechanism of gas drainage borehole, the rheological and visco-elastic-plastic characteristics were considered to establish the mechanical model of coal mass around borehole, which is used to analyze the leakage mechanism and deduce the dynamic leakage model. On the basis of the real coal seam conditions, the variation rules of the stress, leakage ring, and air leakage amount were analyzed through numerical simulation, and the influence factors of air leakage amount were also investigated to provide the theoretical basis for the sealing technology. Results show that the air leakage amount of borehole is inversely proportional to the increase in supporting stress and sealing length, and directly correlated with the increase in borehole radius and softening modulus. Using theoretical analysis, we design a novel active supporting sealing technology that can use grouting material to seal the fractures to reduce the leakage channels and also provide supporting stress to prevent borehole deformation. The engineering test results indicate that the average gas concentration with the novel active supporting sealing technology is increased by 162.12% than that of traditional polyurethane sealing method. Therefore, this technology not only effectively resolves borehole leakage but also significantly improves the gas drainage effect.

Distinctive Scleritome with Marginal Tubercles of a New Palaeoscolecid Worm from the Shipai Fauna(Cambrian Epoch 2) at Three Gorges, South China

SEM analysis of trunk ornamentation on a compressed palaeoscolecid fossil from the Shipai fauna, Cambrian Series 2 and Stage 4 at Three Gorges, South China, allows a reassignment of the material to a new taxon, Sanxiascolex papillogyrus gen. et sp. nov. The preserved body is entirely annulated. Each annulus is ornamented by four rows of irregularly alternating plates and each plate bears numerous tubercles at the marginal region and a variable number （zero to six） of nodes at its central part. These features are unique among known palaeoscolecids. Comparative analyses with other compressed palaeoscolecid macrofossils and phosphatized material on the pattern of trunk ornamentation indicates that a detailed examination of the cuticle ornament weighs heavily in analyses of their taxonomic distinctions. A similar sclerite pattern to that of S. papillogyrus has been found in some phosphatized palaeoscolecid cuticle fragments as well as in isolated sclerites. The upper series of nodes and tubercles of these sclerites suggest an accretional mode of sclerite growth. The considerable variation in node number observed across the plates of S. papillogyrus demonstrates that phosphatic palaeoscolecid taxonomy based on relatively minor variations in the number of selerite nodes should perhaps be reconsidered. As the origins of the phosphatized specimens are quite diverse, a large variety of isolated sclerites from the Early Palaeozoic may not reflect actual biodiversity.

Aqueous Zinc-based energy storage devices are considered as one of the potential candidates in future power technologies.Nevertheless,poor low temperature performance and uncontrollable Zn dendrite growth lead to the limited energy storage capability.Herein,an anti-hydrolysis,cold-resistant,economical,safe,and environmentally friendly electrolyte is developed by utilizing water,ethylene glycol(EG),and ZnCl_(2)with high ionic conductivity(7.9 mS cm^(-1)in glass fiber membrane at-20℃).The spectra data and DFT calculations show the competitive coordination of EG and Cl-to induce a unique solvation configuration of Zn^(2+),conducive to effectively inhibiting the hydrolysis of Zn^(2+),suppressing the dendrite growth,and broadening the working voltage range and temperature range of ZnCl_(2)electrolyte.The isotope tracing data confirm that Cl^(-)could effectively destroy the ZnO passivation film,promoting the formation of Zn nuclei and improving its reaction activity.Compared to the corresponding ZnSO4electrolyte,the Cu/Zn half-cell with the ZnCl_(2)electrolyte exhibits a stable cycle life of more than 1600 h at-20℃,even at the current density of 5 mA cm^(-2).The assembled Zn-ion hybrid capacitor possesses an average capacity of 42.68 m A h g^(-1)under-20℃at a current density of 5 A g^(-1),3.5 times than that of the modified ZnSO4electrolyte.Our work proposes a new approach for optimizing aqueous electrolytes to meet low temperature energy storage applications.

A Study on the Funding Management of Agricultural Scientific Research Project in the New Situation

As a member of the AFF(AF4/FMR2)family,AFF4 is a transcription elongation factor that is a component of the super elongation complex.AFF4 serves as a scaffolding protein that connects transcription factors and promotes gene transcription through elongation and chromatin remodelling.Here,we investigated the effect of AFF4 on human dental follicle cells(DFCs)in osteogenic differentiation.In this study,we found that small interfering RNA-mediated depletion of AFF4 resulted in decreased alkaline phosphatase(ALP)activity and impaired mineralization.In addition,the expression of osteogenic-related genes(DLX5,SP7,RUNX2 and BGLAP)was significantly downregulated.In contrast,lentivirus-mediated overexpression of AFF4 significantly enhanced the osteogenic potential of human DFCs.Mechanistically,we found that both the mRNA and protein levels of ALKBH1,a critical regulator of epigenetics,changed in accordance with AFF4 expression levels.Overexpression of ALKBH1 in AFF4-depleted DFCs partially rescued the impairment of osteogenic differentiation.Our data indicated that AFF4 promoted the osteogenic differentiation of DFCs by upregulating the transcription of ALKBH1.

Dear Editor,Base editors can achieve targeted C-to-T and A-to-G conversion without the generation of DNA double-strand breaks(DSBs)or the requirement of a donor template,showing the potential to generate new mutations or to correct pathogenic mutations(Gaudelli et al.,2018).However,for conventional base editors,efficient base editing requires the presence of an NGG protospacer adjacent motif(PAM)that lies 12–16 nt downstream of the target bases,which generally limits the application of these base editors(Gaudelli et al.,2018).
