This study empirically examines the relationship between a firm＇s fulfilling of corporate social responsibility （CSR） and performance. We developed a CSR index （CSRI） to quantitatively evaluate CSR, which consists of four dimensions measuring a firm＇s contributions to the economy, society, environment, and corporate governance, respectively. With data from publicly-listed firms in Taiwan during the period of 2004--2009, results of quantile regression show that fulfilling CSR has a significantly positive impact on firm performance, and that the impact in a more profitable firm tends to be significantly greater than that in a less profitable firm. Specifically, when a firm is more profitable, its management would be more willing to implement CSR. The implication is that a firm could pursue better performance while serving as a good corporate citizen.

Schwann cell transplantation is considered one of the most promising cell-based therapy to repair injured spinal cord due to its unique growth-promoting and myelin-forming properties.A the Food and Drug Administration-approved Phase I clinical trial has been conducted to evaluate the safety of transplanted human autologous Schwann cells to treat patients with spinal cord injury.A major challenge for Schwann cell transplantation is that grafted Schwann cells are confined within the lesion cavity,and they do not migrate into the host environment due to the inhibitory barrier formed by injury-induced glial scar,thus limiting axonal reentry into the host spinal *** we introduce a combinatorial strategy by suppressing the inhibitory extracellular environment with injection of lentivirus-mediated transfection of chondroitinase ABC gene at the rostral and caudal borders of the lesion site and simultaneously leveraging the repair capacity of transplanted Schwann cells in adult rats following a mid-thoracic contusive spinal cord *** report that when the glial scar was degraded by chondroitinase ABC at the rostral and caudal lesion borders,Schwann cells migrated for considerable distances in both rostral and caudal *** Schwann cell migration led to enhanced axonal regrowth,including the serotonergic and dopaminergic axons originating from supraspinal regions,and promoted recovery of locomotor and urinary bladder ***,the Schwann cell survival and axonal regrowth persisted up to 6 months after the injury,even when treatment was delayed for 3 months to mimic chronic spinal cord *** findings collectively show promising evidence for a combinatorial strategy with chondroitinase ABC and Schwann cells in promoting remodeling and recovery of function following spinal cord injury.

Personalized federated learning(PFL) aims to train customized models for individual clients in a decentralized setting, with the account of non-independent and identically distributed data across clients. However, most PFL methods adopt uniform classification layers for diverse clients and give rise to error-prone predictions, due to the task heterogeneity notably prominent in decentralized graph data scenarios. Although some PFL solutions setup client-specific classification layers for each client and optimize them only locally, they are corrupted with limited local training data. We propose an innovative solution called federated parameter decoupling and node augmentation(Fed PANo) to address these problems and to achieve personalized federated few-shot node classification, which is a prevalent and challenging but unexplored topic. Specifically, Fed PANo first separates the local model into the GNN and classifier to handle unique client-specific task variations. The GNN is trained through federated learning to capture shared knowledge of graph nodes across clients, while the classifier is custom-designed and trained individually for each client. Additionally, a generic classifier shared among clients is adopted to encourage the GNN's grasp of shared information. Then Fed PANo further proposes the node generator along with its local and collaborative training strategies to deal with the node scarcity of clients. Extensive experimental results on benchmark datasets confirm that Fed PANo outperforms eight competitive baselines across different settings.

A comparative study of selected bridge damage due to the Wenchuan, Northridge, Loma Prieta and San Fernando earthquakes is described in this paper. Typical ground motion effects considered include large ground fault displacement, liquefaction, landslide, and strong ground shaking. Issues related to falling spans, inadequate detailing for structural ductility and complex bridge configurations are discussed within the context of the recent seismic design codes of China and the US. A significant lesson learned from the Great Wenchuan earthquake, far beyond the opportunities to improve the seismic design provisions for bridges, is articulated.

Heterogeneous reactions of NO2 on different surfaces play an important role in atmospheric NOxremoval and HONO formation,having profound impacts on photochemistry in polluted urban *** studies have suggested that the NO2 uptake on the ground or aerosol surfaces could be a dominant source for elevated HONO during the ***,the uptake behavior of NO2 varies with different surfaces,and different uptake coefficients were used or derived in different *** obtain a more holistic picture of heterogeneous NO2 uptake on different surfaces,a series of laboratory experiments using different flow tube reactors was conducted,and the NO2 uptake coefficients(γ)were determined on inorganic particles,sea water and urban *** results showed that heterogeneous reactions on those surfaces were generally weak in dark conditions,with the measuredγvaried from<10-8 to 3.2×10-7 under different humidity.A photo-enhanced uptake of NO2 on urban grime was observed,with the obvious formation of HONO and NO from the heterogeneous *** photo-enhancedγwas measured to be 1.9×10-6 at 5%relative humidity(RH)and 5.8×10-6 at 70%RH on urban grime,showing a positive RH dependence for both NO2 uptake and HONO *** results demonstrate an important role of urban grime in the daytime NO2-to-HONO conversion,and could be helpful to explain the unknown daytime HONO source in the polluted urban area.

Accurate model identification and fault detection are necessary for reliable motor control. Motor-characterizing parameters experience substantial changes due to aging, motor operating conditions, and faults. Consequently, motor parameters must be estimated accurately and reliably during operation. Based on enhanced model structures of electric motors that accommodate both normal and faulty modes, this paper introduces bias-corrected least-squares （LS） estimation algorithms that incorporate functions for correcting estimation bias, forgetting factors for capturing sudden faults, and recursive structures for efficient real-time implementation. Permanent magnet motors are used as a benchmark type for concrete algorithm development and evaluation. Algorithms are presented, their properties are established, and their accuracy and robustness are evaluated by simulation case studies under both normal operations and inter-turn winding faults. Implementation issues from different motor control schemes are also discussed.
