A global perspective on microbial risk factors in effluents of wastewater treatment plants

Effective monitoring and management of microbial risk factors in wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)effluents require a comprehensive investigation of these risks.A global survey on microbial risk factors in WWTP effluents could reveal important insights into their risk *** study aims to explore the abundance and types of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs),virulence factor genes(VFGs),the vector of ARG/VFG,and dominant pathogens in global WWTP *** collected 113 metagenomes of WWTP effluents from the Sequence Read Archive of the National Center for Biotechnology Information and characterized the microbial risk *** results showed that multidrug resistance was the dominant ARG type,while offensive virulence factors were the most abundant type of *** most dominant types of ARGs in the vector of plasmid and phage were both aminoglycoside resistance,which is concerning as aminoglycosides are often a last resort for treating multi-resistant *** baumannii was the most dominant pathogen,rather than Escherichia coli,and a weak negative correlation between Escherichia coli and two other dominant pathogens(Acinetobacter baumannii and Bacteroides uniformis)suggests that using Escherichia coli as a biological indicator for all pathogens in WWTP effluents may not be *** Getah virus was the most dominant virus found in global WWTP *** study presents a comprehensive global-scale investigation of microbial risk factors in WWTP effluents,providing valuable insights into the potential risks associated with WWTP effluents and contributing to the monitoring and control of these risks.

Performance-Centric Optimization for Racetrack Memory Based Register File on GPUs

The key to high performance for GPU architecture lies in its massive threading capability to drive a large number of cores and enable execution overlapping among threads. However, in reality, the number of threads that can simultaneously execute is often limited by the size of the register file on GPUs. The traditional SRAM-based register file takes up so large amount of chip area that it cannot scale to meet the increasing demand of GPU applications. Racetrack memory （RM） is a promising technology for designing large capacity register file on GPUs due to its high data storage density. However, without careful deployment of RM-based register file, the lengthy shift operations of RM may hurt the performance. In this paper, we explore RM for designing high-performance register file for GPU architecture. High storage density RM helps to improve the thread level parallelism （TLP）, but if the bits of the registers are not aligned to the ports, shift operations are required to move the bits to the access ports before they are accessed, and thus the read/write operations are delayed. We develop an optimization framework for RM-based register file on GPUs, which employs three different optimization techniques at the application, compilation, and architecture level, respectively. More clearly, we optimize the TLP at the application level, design a register mapping algorithm at the compilation level, and design a preshifting mechanism at the architecture level. Collectively, these optimizations help to determine the TLP without causing cache and register file resource contention and reduce the shift operation overhead. Experimental results using a variety of representative workloads demonstrate that our optimization framework achieves up to 29% （21% on average） performance improvement.

Mechanical Performance of Bio-inspired Bidirectional Corrugated Sandwich Pressure Shell Under External Hydrostatic Pressure

This paper aims to enhance the compression capacity of underwater cylindrical shells by adopting the corrugated sandwich structure of *** cuttlebone suffers uniaxial external compression,while underwater cylindrical shells are in a biaxial compressive stress *** suit the biaxial compressive stress state,a novel bidirectional corrugated sandwich structure is proposed to improve the bearing capacity of cylindrical *** static and buckling analysis for the sandwich shell and the unstiffened cylindrical shell with the same volume-weight ratio are studied by numerical *** is indicated that the proposed sandwich shell can effectively reduce the ratio between circumferential and axial stress from 2 to 1.25 and improve the critical buckling load by about 1.63 *** simulation shows that optimizing and adjusting the structural parameters could significantly improve the advantage of the sandwich ***,the hydrostatic pressure tests for shell models fabricated by 3D printing are carried *** to the experimental results,the overall failure position of the sandwich shell is at the center part of the sandwich *** has been found the average critical load of the proposed sandwich shell models exceeds two times that of the unstiffened shell ***,the proposed bio-inspired bidirectional corrugated sandwich structure can significantly enhance the pressure resistance capability of cylindrical shells.

High-resolution remote thermometry based on Bi^(3+)-doped 0D zinc halide hybrids

Developing highly sensitive optical thermometers is of great significance due to their capability to enable remote and non-contact temperature measurements, rendering them highly applicable in diverse and harsh environments. Herein we report a temperature-dependent phosphor of 0D metal halide hybrid by incorporating Bi^(3+)into the(MePPh_(3))_(2)ZnCl_(4) matrix. Through Bi^(3+)doping,the initially non-luminescent(MePPh_(3))_(2) ZnCl_(4) matrix exhibits a deep-blue emission centered at 453 nm, with a photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY) of 5.71% and a Stokes shift of 75 nm at room temperature. Experimental characterization demonstrates that exciton-like luminescence of Bi^(3+)is mainly responsible for the blue emission. Single crystals of Bi^(3+)-doped(MePPh_(3))_(2)ZnCl_(4) show an unusual correlation between photoluminescence(PL) lifetime and temperature. Particularly, the dependence of luminescence lifetime on temperature is most remarkable in the temperature range of 80 to 100 K with an exceptional sensitivity up to 0.09 K^(-1), representing one of the best levels for thermometry based on PL decay lifetime. Our work not only provides a viable strategy for designing a novel, environmentally friendly, and stable blue emitter, but also paves the way for precise thermometric application at low temperature.

At the end of 2022,the adjustment of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic control policy in China resulted in alarge-scale increase in public *** compare the fertility parameters of male patients before and after the adjustments ofthe COVID-19 pandemic control policy in China,we collected data on patients’medical histories and laboratory examinations ontheir first visits between June 2022 and March 2023 in five different *** were divided into five groups according tothe timeline of the policy *** data we collected from male patients included semen quality and serum reproductivehormone levels,and intergroup comparisons were made using the Mann–Whitney U and Chi-square *** total,16784 casesunderwent regular semen analysis,11180 had sperm morphology assessments,and 7200 had reproductive hormone *** showed declining trends in semen volume,sperm motility,and the progressive sperm motility rate after the policy *** comparison revealed an initial decrease and gradual recovery in progressive motility *** morphology analysisshowed increased neck and tail abnormalities after the policy *** significant change in hormone levels was *** the adjustment of the COVID-19 prevention policy in China,a decline in sperm motility and morphology was *** trend may gradually recover over 2 *** the policy adjustment,reproductive hormone levels were relatively stablethroughout,except for an increase in luteinizing hormone(LH).These changes in semen parameters suggest that the policyadjustment had a short-to medium-term impact on male reproductive function.

High plastic Zr–Cu–Fe–Al–Nb bulk metallic glasses for biomedical applications

Four Zr–Cu–Fe–Al-based bulk metallic glasses（BMGs） with Zr contents greater than 65at% and minor additions of Nb were designed and prepared. The glass forming abilities, thermal stabilities, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance properties of the prepared BMGs were investigated. These BMGs exhibit moderate glass forming abilities along with superior fracture and yield strengths compared to previously reported Zr–Cu–Fe–Al BMGs. Specifically, the addition of Nb into this quaternary system remarkably increases the plastic strain to 27.5%, which is related to the high Poisson＇s ratio and low Young＇s and shear moduli. The Nb-bearing BMGs also exhibit a lower corrosion current density by about one order of magnitude and a wider passive region than 316 L steel in phosphate buffer solution（PBS, pH 7.4）. The combination of the optimized composition with high deformation ability, low Young＇s modulus, and excellent corrosion resistance properties indicates that this kind of BMG is promising for biomedical applications.
