Thermal distribution and response in Q-switched ruby laser treatment for oculodermal melanosis (Nevus of Ota)

Aim: A clinically useful treatment laser must generate stable and precise energy of low diffusivity. This study assessed the photothermal response of a Q-switched ruby laser (QSRL) in the treatment of oculodermal melanosis (Nevus of Ota).Methods: A two-year retrospective review of 40 patients with oculodermal melanosis treated with a QSRL (λ = 694 nm, pulse duration = 25 ns, 3 mm spot size, energy density 6-10 J/cm2) was performed. Demographics included an age range of 18-54 years (mean 28) and a gender distribution of 25 females and 15 males. The values recorded from real-time infrared thermal imaging of the lasered skin were inserted into standard thermal wave equations. This permitted analysis of the resultant temperature distributions related to the energy ***: Skin temperature was unchanged during the initial heating stage. This was followed by a very rapid temperature rise. A thermal burn injury manifested by dermal-epidermal disruption, resulted when the energy density of the QSRL exceeded 8 J/cm2 (> 44℃).Conclusion: The use of infrared thermal imaging with a standard thermal wave equation allows prediction of skin temperature distribution when QSRL is used for the treatment of oculodermal melanosis. With the use of appropriate settings, complications may be minimized.

Background We explored the differences in baseline characteristics, pathogens, complications, outcomes, and risk factorsbetween children with hospital-acquired septic shock (HASS) and community-acquired septic shock (CASS) in the pediatricintensive care unit (PICU).Methods This retrospective study enrolled children with septic shock at the PICU of Beijing Children’s Hospital from January1, 2016, to December 31, 2019. The patients were followed up until 28 days after shock or death and were divided intothe HASS and CASS group. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for *** A total of 298 children were enrolled. Among them, 65.9% (n = 91) of HASS patients had hematologic/oncologicdiseases, mainly with Gram-negative bacterial bloodstream infections (47.3%). Additionally, 67.7% (n = 207) of CASSpatients had no obvious underlying disease, and most experienced Gram-positive bacterial infections (30.9%) of the respiratoryor central nervous system. The 28-day mortality was 62.6% and 32.7% in the HASS and CASS groups, respectively(P < 0.001). Platelet [odds ratio (OR) = 0.996, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.992–1.000, P = 0.028], positive pathogendetection (OR = 3.557, 95% CI = 1.307–9.684, P = 0.013), and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (OR = 10.953, 95%CI = 1.974–60.775, P = 0.006) were risk factors for 28-day mortality in HASS patients. Lactate (OR = 1.104, 95% CI = 1.022–1.192, P = 0.012) and mechanical ventilation (OR = 8.114, 95% CI = 1.806–36.465, P = 0.006) were risk factors for 28-daymortality in patients with *** The underlying diseases, pathogens, complications, prognosis, and mortality rates varied widely between theHASS and CASS groups. Single-cell and spatial omics:exploring hypothalamic heterogeneity

Elucidating the complex dynamic cellular organization in the hypothalamus is critical for understanding its role in coordinating fundamental body functions. Over the past decade, single-cell and spatial omics technologies have significantly evolved, overcoming initial technical challenges in capturing and analyzing individual cells. These high-throughput omics technologies now offer a remarkable opportunity to comprehend the complex spatiotemporal patterns of transcriptional diversity and cell-type characteristics across the entire hypothalamus. Current single-cell and single-nucleus RNA sequencing methods comprehensively quantify gene expression by exploring distinct phenotypes across various subregions of the hypothalamus. However, single-cell/single-nucleus RNA sequencing requires isolating the cell/nuclei from the tissue, potentially resulting in the loss of spatial information concerning neuronal networks. Spatial transcriptomics methods, by bypassing the cell dissociation, can elucidate the intricate spatial organization of neural networks through their imaging and sequencing technologies. In this review, we highlight the applicative value of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics in exploring the complex molecular-genetic diversity of hypothalamic cell types, driven by recent high-throughput achievements.

Improving aircraft aerodynamic performance with bionic wing obtained by ice shape modulation

For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)with limited electrical power to achieve effectively anti-/de-icing at the leading edge of the wing,a strategy of ice shape modulation was *** simulated ice shape pieces printed by 3D printing technology are mounted on a NACA0012 finite wing model,and its lift/drag coefficients and suction-side velocity fields are measured by the six-component force balance and the Particle Imaging Velocimetry(PIV),*** ratio of the spanwise length of a single ice shape piece to chord length and the spanwise length of the non-icing area between the two adjacent single ice shape pieces are defined as dimensionless ice shape length(w/c)and dimensionless modulation ratio(w/λ),*** results indicate that for a fixed w/λ,the wing lift coefficient first increases and then drops with increasing w/c,and a peak value exists when w/c is between 0.1 and *** lower the w/λis,the higher the wing lift coefficient will *** periodical variation of the flow separation area along the spanwise direction is attributed on the one hand to the acceleration effect of the flow field in the non-icing area which reduces the separation area,and on the other hand to the cross-flow caused by the streamwise vortices from the non-icing area to the icing area which promotes the mixing of the flow field(similar to vortex generators).The obtained modulation law is verified through flight tests and provides guidance for the use of ice shape modulation scheme for UAVs that cannot be completely anti-/deicing under severe weather conditions.

The brain's extracellular matrix(ECM),which is comprised of protein and glycosaminoglycan(GAG)scaffolds,constitutes 20%-40% of the human brain and is considered one of the largest influencers on brain cell functioning(Soles et al.,2023).Synthesized by neural and glial cells,the brain's ECM regulates a myriad of homeostatic cellular processes,including neuronal plasticity and firing(Miyata et al.,2012),cation buffering(Moraws ki et al.,2015),and glia-neuron interactions(Anderson et al.,2016).Considering the diversity of functions,dynamic remodeling of the brain's ECM indicates that this understudied medium is an active participant in both normal physiology and neurological diseases.

Is TOL 1326–379 a Prototype ofγ-Ray Emitting FR0 Radio Galaxy?

With the possible spacial association to the Fermi/LAT source 3 FGL J 1330.0-3818,TOL 1326-379 may be the first one that is identified as a 7-ray emitting Fanaroff-Riley type 0 radio galaxy(FRO RG).We analyze the~12 yr Fermi/LAT observation data of thisγ-ray source and examine its association to TOL *** show that theγ-ray source(named as J1331.0-3818)is tentatively detected with a TS value of 28.7,3 FGL J 1330.0-3818 is out of the 95%containment of J1331.0-3818,and their positions are spatially separated~0°.2.4 FGL J1331.3-3818 falls into the 68%containment of J1331.0-3818,suggesting that our result agrees with that reported in the Fourth Fermi LAT Source *** 1326-379 is out of the 95%containment of J1331.0-3818,and their positions are spatially separated~0°.4,indicating that the association between J1331.0-3818 and TOL 1326-379 is quite ***,we do not find other possible potential radio or X-ray counterpart within the circle centered at J1331.0-3818 with a radius of 0°.*** spectral energy distribution(SED)of TOL 1326-379 shows a bimodal feature as seen in theγ-ray emitting *** fit the SED with the one-zone leptonic model and find that the average energy spectrum of J1331.0-3818 agrees with the model *** that J1331.0-3818 is an unidentified 7-ray source,we derive the upper-limit of theγ-ray flux for TOL *** is not tight enough to exclude this possibility with the SED *** on these results,we cautiously argue that theγ-ray source J1331.0-3818 is associated with TOL 1326-379 and its jet radiation physic is similar to thoseγ-ray emitting RGs.
