A novel deep learning framework with variational auto-encoder for indoor air quality prediction

Exposure to poor indoor air conditions poses significant risks to human health, increasing morbidity and mortality rates. Soft measurement modeling is suitable for stable and accurate monitoring of air pollutants and improving air quality. Based on partial least squares (PLS), we propose an indoor air quality prediction model that utilizes variational auto-encoder regression (VAER) algorithm. To reduce the negative effects of noise, latent variables in the original data are extracted by PLS in the first step. Then, the extracted variables are used as inputs to VAER, which improve the accuracy and robustness of the model. Through comparative analysis with traditional methods, we demonstrate the superior performance of our PLS-VAER model, which exhibits improved prediction performance and stability. The root mean square error (RMSE) of PLS-VAER is reduced by 14.71%, 26.47%, and 12.50% compared to single VAER, PLS-SVR, and PLS-ANN, respectively. Additionally, the coefficient of determination (R2) of PLS-VAER improves by 13.70%, 30.09%, and 11.25% compared to single VAER, PLS-SVR, and PLS-ANN, respectively. This research offers an innovative and environmentally-friendly approach to monitor and improve indoor air quality.

Ag-GST/HfO_(x)-based unidirectional threshold switching selector with low leakage current and threshold voltage distribution for high-density cross-point arrays

The use of electrochemical-metallization-based volatile threshold switching selectors in cross-point arrays has been widely explored owing to their high on-off ratios and simple structure.However,these devices are unsuitable for cross-point architectures because of the difficulty in controlling the random filament formation that results in large fluctuations in the threshold voltage during operation.In this study,we investigated the unidirectional threshold transition characteristics associated with an Ag/GST/HfO_(x)/Pt-based bilayer selector and demonstrated the occurrence of a low leakage current(<1×10^(-11) A) and low distribution of the threshold voltage(Δ0.11 V).The bilayer structure could control the filament formation in the intermediate state through the insertion of an HfO_(x) tunneling barrier.By stacking a bilayer selector with NiO_(x)based resistive random-access memory,the leakage and programming currents of the device could be significantly decreased.For the crossbar array configuration,we performed equivalent circuit analysis of a one-selector oneresistor(1S1R) devices and estimated the optimal array size to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed structure.The maximum acceptable crossbar array size of the 1S1R device with the Ag/GST/HfO_(x)/Pt/Ti/NiO_(x)/Pt structure was 5.29×10^(14)(N^(2),N=2.3×10^(7)).

Mixed-dimensional composite structures using zero-dimensional(0D)quantum dots(QDs)and two-dimensional(2D)transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)materials are expected to attract great interest in optoelectronics due to the potential to generate new optical properties.Here,we report on the unique optical characteristics of a devices with mixed dimensional vertically stacked structures based on tungsten diselenide(WSe_(2))/CdSeS QDs monolayer/molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2))(2D/0D/2D).Specifically,it exhibits an ambipolar photoresponse characteristic,with a negative photoresponse observed in the 400-600 nm wavelength range and a positive photoresponse appeared at 700 nm wavelength.It resulted in the high negative responsivity of up to 52.22 mA·W^(−1)under 400 nm,which is 163 times higher than that of the photodetector without CdSeS QDs.We also demonstrated the negative photoresponse,which could be due to increased carrier collision probability and non-radiative recombination.Device modeling and simulation reveal that Auger recombination among the types of non-radiative recombination is the main cause of negative photocurrent generation.Consequently,we discovered ambipolar photoresponse near a specific wavelength corresponding to the energy of quantum dots.Our study revealed interesting phenomenon in the mixed low-dimensional stacked structure and paved the way to exploit it for the development of innovative photodetection materials as well as for optoelectronic applications.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of Catalpa bignonioides fruit extract on the promotion of muscle growth and muscular capacity in vitro and in vivo.Methods:Cell viability was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay.Cell proliferation was assessed using a 5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine(BrdU)assay kit.Western blot analysis was performed to determine the protein expressions of related factors.The effects of Catalpa bignonioides extract were investigated in mice using the treadmill exhaustion test and whole-limb grip strength assay.Chemical composition analysis was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Results:Catalpa bignonioides extract increased the proliferation of C2C12 mouse myoblasts by activating the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.It also induced metabolic changes,increasing the number of mitochondria and glucose metabolism by phosphorylating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase.In an in vivo study,the extract-treated mice showed improved motor abilities,such as muscular endurance and grip strength.Additionally,HPLC analysis showed that vanillic acid may be the main component of the Catalpa bignonioides extract that enhanced muscle strength.Conclusions:Catalpa bignonioides improves exercise performance through regulation of growth and metabolism in skeletal muscles,suggesting its potential as an effective natural agent for improving muscular strength.

Aquaporin （AQP） is a water channel protein found in various subcellular membranes of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The physiological functions of AQPs have been elucidated in many organisms. However, understanding their biogenesis remains elusive, particularly regarding how they assemble into tetramers. Here, we investigated the amino acid residues involved in the tetramer formation of the Arabidopsis plasma membrane AQP AtPIP2;1 using extensive amino acid substitution mutagenesis. The mutant proteins V41A/ E44A, F51A/L52A, F87A/191A, F92A/193A, V95A/Y96A, and H216A/L217A, harboring alanine substitutions in the transmembrane （TM） helices of AtPIP2;1 polymerized into multiple oligomeric complexes with a vari- able number of subunits greater than four. Moreover, these mutant proteins failed to traffic to the plasma membrane, instead of accumulating in the endoplasmic reticulum （ER）. Structure-based modeling revealed that these residues are largely involved in interactions between TM helices within monomers. These results suggest that inter-TM interactions occurring both within and between monomers play crucial roles in tetramer formation in the AtPIP2;1 complex. Moreover, the assembly of AtPIP2;1 tetramers is critical for their trafficking from the ER to the plasma membrane, as well as water permeability.

Varicella-zoster virus meningitis after spinal anesthesia:A case report

BACKGROUND Headache is a common complication of regional anesthesia.The treatment of post spinal anesthesia headache varies depending on the cause.Although meningitis is rare,it can cause significant harm to the patient.Post dural puncture headache and septic meningitis are the most commonly suspected causes of post spinal anesthesia headache;however,other causes should also be considered.CASE SUMMARY A 69-year-old woman was scheduled for varicose vein stripping surgery under spinal anesthesia.The procedure was performed aseptically,and surgery was completed without any complications.After 4 d,the patient visited the emergency room with complaints of headache,nausea,and anorexia.Clinical examination revealed that the patient was afebrile.Considering the history of spinal anesthesia,post dural puncture headache and septic meningitis was initially suspected,and the patient was treated with empirical antibiotics.Subsequently,varicella-zoster virus PCR test result was positive,and all other test results were negative.The patient was diagnosed with meningitis caused by varicella-zoster virus and was treated with acyclovir for 5 d.The headache improved,and the patient was discharged without any problems.CONCLUSION Viral meningitis due to virus reactivation may cause headache after regional anesthesia.Therefore,clinicians should consider multiple etiologies of headache.

Inverse correlation between gastroesophageal reflux disease and atrophic gastritis assessed by endoscopy and serology

BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)infection is known to prevent the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)by inducing gastric mucosal atrophy.However,little is known about the relationship between atrophic gastritis(AG)and GERD.AIM To confirm the inverse correlation between AG and the occurrence and severity of GERD.METHODS Individuals receiving health checkups who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at Seoul National University Healthcare System Gangnam Center were included.The grade of reflux esophagitis was evaluated according to the Los Angeles classification.Endoscopic AG(EAG)was categorized into six grades.Serologic AG(SAG)was defined as pepsinogen I≤70 ng/m L and pepsinogen I/II ratio≤3.0.The association between the extent of EAG and SAG and the occurrence and severity of GERD was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analysis.RESULTS In total,4684 individuals with GERD were compared with 21901 healthy controls.In multivariate logistic regression analysis,advanced age,male sex,body mass index>23 kg/m2,presence of metabolic syndrome,current smoking,and alcohol consumption were associated with an increased risk of GERD.Seropositivity for H.pylori immunoglobulin G antibodies was associated with a decreased risk of GERD.There was an inverse correlation between the extent of EAG and occurrence of GERD:Odds ratio(OR),1.01[95%confidence interval(CI):0.90-1.14]in C1,0.87(0.78-0.97)in C2,0.71(0.62-0.80)in C3,0.52(0.44-0.61)in O1,0.37(0.29-0.48)in O2,and 0.28(0.18-0.43)in O3.Additionally,the extent of EAG showed an inverse correlation with the severity of GERD.The presence of SAG was correlated with a reduced risk of GERD(OR=0.49,95%CI:0.28-0.87,P=0.014).CONCLUSION The extent of EAG and SAG exhibited strong inverse relationships with the occurrence and severity of GERD.AG followed by H.pylori infection may be independently protect against GERD.

Topic Models to Analyze Disaster-Related Newspaper Articles: Focusing on COVID-19

Major media outlets have run many articles on the COVID-19 pandemic.Since the public suffers cognitive and emotional effects related to COVID-19 from such reports,we analyzed and reviewed the topics of news reports.We searched newspaper articles with the term‘COVID-19’term in four Korean daily newspapers from January 20,2020,when thefirst patient in Korea was found,to June 15,2020.Topic modeling analysis was conducted through text mining using R.Five themes were found:“Changes in people’s everyday life,”“Socio-economic shock,”“Trends in infection,”“Role of the government and business,”and“Increased psychological anxiety,”which all showed sharp increases in articles from mid-February to early March and then decreased.Despite the increased psychological anxiety people suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic,this topic showed the fewest articles.“Changes in people’s everyday life”showed the most,focusing attention on stimulating lifestyle articles of general interest.Since the COVID-19 pandemic can lead to mental health problems due to severe changes and isolation in everyday life,a comprehensive response to the news focusing on the impact on the mental health of the population around the world should be made.

The Early Emotional Responses and Central Issues of People in the Epicenter of the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Analysis from Twitter Text Mining

This study aimed to explore citizens’emotional responses and issues of interest in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.The dataset comprised 65,313 tweets with the location marked as New York State.The data collection period was four days of tweets when New York City imposed a lockdown order due to an increase in conﬁrmed cases.Data analysis was performed using R Studio.The emotional responses in tweets were analyzed using the Bing and NRC(National Research Council Canada)dictionaries.The tweets’central issue was identiﬁed by Text Network Analysis.When tweets were classiﬁed as either positive or negative,the negative sentiment was higher.Using the NRC dictionary,eight emotional classiﬁcations were devised:“trust,”“fear,”“anticipation,”“sadness,”“anger,”“joy,”“surprise,”and“disgust.”These results indicated that citizens showed negative and trusting emotional reactions in the early days of the pandemic.Moreover,citizens showed a strong interest in overcoming and coping with other people such as social solidarity.Citizens were concerned about the conﬁrmation of COVID-19 infection status and death.Efforts should be made to ensure citizens’psychological stability by promptly informing them of the status of infectious disease management and the route of infection.

BACKGROUND Acromioclavicular joint(ACJ)space narrowing has been considered to be an important diagnostic image parameter of ACJ osteoarthritis(ACJO).However,the morphology of the ACJ space is irregular because of osteophyte formation,subchondral irregularity,capsular distention,sclerosis,and erosion.Therefore,we created the ACJ cross-sectional area(ACJCSA)as a new diagnostic image parameter to assess the irregular morphologic changes of the ACJ.AIM To hypothesize that the ACJCSA is a new diagnostic image parameter for ACJO.METHODS ACJ samples were obtained from 35 patients with ACJO and 30 healthy individuals who underwent shoulder magnetic resonance(S-MR)imaging that revealed no evidence of ACJO.Oblique coronal,T2-weighted,fat-suppressed SMR images were acquired at the ACJ level from the two groups.We measured the ACJCSA and the ACJ space width(ACJSW)at the ACJ on the S-MR images using our imaging analysis program.The ACJCSA was measured as the cross-sectional area of the ACJ.The ACJSW was measured as the narrowest point between the acromion and the clavicle.RESULTS The average ACJCSA was 39.88±10.60 mm;in the normal group and 18.80±5.13 mm;in the ACJO group.The mean ACJSW was 3.51±0.58 mm in the normal group and 2.02±0.48 mm in the ACJO group.ACJO individuals had significantly lower ACJCSA and ACJSW than the healthy individuals.Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses demonstrated that the most suitable ACJCSA cutoff score was 26.14 mm^(2),with 91.4%sensitivity and 90.0%specificity.CONCLUSION The optimal ACJSW cutoff score was 2.37 mm,with 88.6%sensitivity and 96.7%specificity.Even though both the ACJCSA and ACJSW were significantly associated with ACJO,the ACJCSA was a more sensitive diagnostic image parameter.
