Assessment of the potential toxicity of insecticidal compounds to Peristenus spretus,a parasitoid of mirid bugs

With the increased cultivation of Bt crops in China,Apolygus lucorum and other mirid bugs have emerged as important agricultural pests because they are insensitive to the Bt proteins.In addition,the reduction of pesticide applications after planting Bt crops also increases the severity of mirid bug outbreaks.Peristenus spretus is a parasitoid of mirid nymphs,but its sensitivity to Bt proteins is not known.In the current study,we developed a dietary exposure assay to assess the effects of Bt proteins(Cry1Ab,Cry1Ac,Cry1F,Cry2Aa,and Cry2Ab)on P.spretus adults using a diet consisting of a 10% honey solution with or without Bt proteins at 400μg g^(-1) diet.The results showed that the survival and reproduction of P.spretus adults were reduced by the cysteine protease inhibitor E-64(a positive control)but were not affected by any of the five Bt proteins.The activities of digestive,detoxifying,and antioxidant enzymes in P.spretus were also unaffected by diets containing the Cry proteins,but they were significantly affected by the diet containing E-64.We then developed a tritrophic bioassay to determine the effects of the five Bt proteins on P.spretus larvae and pupae.In this assay,A.lucorum nymphs fed an artificial diet containing Cry proteins were used as the hosts for P.spretus.The results of the tri-trophic assay indicated that neither the pupation rate nor the eclosion rate of the P.spretus parasitoids were significantly affected by the presence of high concentrations of Bt proteins in the parasitized A.lucorum nymphs.The overall results indicate that these two assays can be used to evaluate the toxicity of insecticidal compounds to P.spretus and that the tested Cry proteins are not toxic to P.spretus.

Imaging Gliomas with Nanoparticle-Labeled Stem Cells

Objective： Gliomas are the most common neoplasm of the central nervous system （CNS）; however, traditional imaging techniques do not show the boundaries of tumors well. Some researchers have found a new therapeutic mode to combine nanoparticles, which are nanosized particles with various properties for specific therapeutic purposes, and stern cells for tracing gliomas. This review provides an introduction of the basic understanding and clinical applications of the combination of stem cells and nanoparticles as a contrast agent for glioma imaging. Data Sources： Studies published in English up to and including 2017 were extracted from the PubMed database with the selected key words of＂stem cell,＂＂glioma,＂＂nanoparticles,＂＂MRI,＂＂＇nuclear imaging,＂ and ＂Fluorescence imaging.＂ Study Selection： The selection of studies focused on both preclinical studies and basic studies of tracking glioma with nanoparticle-labeled stem cells. Results： Studies have demonstrated successful labeling of stem cells with multiple types of nanoparticles. These labeled stein cells efficiently migrated to gliomas of varies models and produced signals sensitively captured by different imaging modalities. Conclusion： The use of nanoparticle-labeled stem cells is a promising imaging platform for the tracking and treatment of gliomas.

Roles of mushroom polysaccharides in chronic disease management

Chronic diseases have drawn much attention as the primary cause of death and disability. In exploring novel sideeffect-free agents against chronic diseases, significant efforts have been devoted to mushroom polysaccharides due to their diverse biological activities. This work reviewed the structural features, biological performances and molecular mechanisms of mushroom polysaccharides in managing cancers, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. The potentials of mushroom polysaccharides against chronic diseases highly depend on their structural features, including monosaccharide composition, molecular weight, the type and configuration of glycosidic bonds, degree of branching, the type of substituent pattern and chain conformation. Regarding their working mechanisms, shared and diseasespecific pathways were found. The three chronic diseases shared the regulation of specific signalling pathways and the adjustment of gut microbiota. In addition, the roles of transcription factors, receptors, enzymes, hormones and other functional proteins involved in the molecular mechanisms of mushroom polysaccharides against chronic diseases are first elaborated herein. The present review describes the state of the art of mushroom polysaccharides in treating chronic diseases and addresses the perspectives, and will further promote research on this topic.

Water hammer protection for diversion systems in front of pumps in long-distance water supply projects

For a water supply system with long-distance diversion pipelines, in addition to the water hammer problems that occur beyond pumps, the safety of the water diversion pipeline in front of pumps also deserves attention. In this study, a water hammer protection scheme combined with an overflow surge tank and a regulating valve was developed. A mathematical model of the overflow surge tank was developed, and an analytical formula for the height of the overflow surge tank was derived. Furthermore, a practical water supply project was used to evaluate the feasibility of the combined protection scheme and analyze the sensitivity of valve regulation rules. The results showed that the combined protection scheme effectively reduced the height of the surge tank, lessened the difficulties related to construction, and reduced the necessary financial investment for the project. The two-stage closing rule articulated as fast first and then slow could minimize the overflow volume of the surge tank when the power failure occurred, while the two-stage opening rule articulated as slow first and then fast could be more conducive to the safety of the water supply system when the pump started up.

Skyrmions are nano-scale quasi-particles with topological protection,which have potential applications in next-generation spintronics-based information storage.Numerous papers have been published to review various aspects of skyrmions,including physics,materials and applications.However,no review paper has focused on rare metals which play important roles in nucleating and manipulating skyrmions and other topological states.In this paper,various roles of rare metals have been classified and summarized,which can tune Curie temperature(TC),Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction(DMI),magnetocrystalline anisotropy,Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida(RKKY)interaction and four-spin interaction so as to trigger the generation of skyrmions and other topological spin structures.The materials covered include typical B20 crystals,various layered systems with interfacial DMI,frustrated materials,antiferromagnets,ferrimagnets,twodimensional(2D)materials,etc.In addition,the rare-earth(RE)permanent magnets can provide an energy barrier and enrich the dynamic behaviors of skyrmions,which has also been reviewed.

A retrospective study of 2228 cases with eyelid tumors

AIM： To describe the histopathologic and clinical features of eyelid tumor cases from Tianjin Eye Hospital during 2002 to 2015. METHODS： In this retrospective study, a total of 2228 cases of eyelid tumors with pathologic diagnoses were enrolled. The eyelid tumors were classified into three groups according to tumor origin： epidermal, adnexal and miscellaneous, including melanocytic, neural and vascular lesions. Inflammatory tumor-like lesions were excluded. The clinical characteristics of the eyelid tumors were analyzed, including age, gender and lesion location. RESULTS： Most eyelid tumors were epidermal in origin（1080, 48.5%）, followed by miscellaneous（885, 39.7%） and adnexal tumors（263, 11.8%）. Among all the tumors, 292（13.1%） were malignant lesions, 1910（85.7%） benign and 26（1.1%） premalignant lesions. Most malignant tumors originated from epidermal cells（60.0%）, followed by adnexal cells（34.6%）. The most common malignant tumors were basal cell carcinomas（56.5%） followed by sebaceous carcinoma（34.6%）, squamous cell carcinomas（3.8%） and lymphoma/plasmocytoma（1.7%）. The benign and premalignant eyelid lesions mostly originated from epidermal cells（46.4%） followed by miscellaneous cell sources（45.2%）, including melanocytic nevus（33.8%）, seborrheic keratosis（13.7%）, squamous cell papilloma（13.0%） and epidermal cysts（11.5%）. CONCLUSION： Eyelid tumors are mostly epithelial in origin. Benign tumors are significantly more common than malignant tumors with an obvious female predominance, and the most frequent malignant tumor are basal cell carcinoma, sebaceous carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas. The tumor clinical features varied among the different subtypes.

Steering elementary steps towards efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution via size-dependent Ni/NiO nanoscale heterosurfaces

Alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction(HER), consisting of Volmer and Heyrovsky/Tafel steps, requires extra energy for water dissociation, leading to more sluggish kinetics than acidic HER. Despite the advances in electrocatalysts, how to combine active sites to synergistically promote both steps and understand the underlying mechanism remain largely unexplored. Here, Density Functional Theory(DFT) calculations predict that NiO accelerates the Volmer step while metallic Ni facilitates the Heyrovsky/Tafel step. A facile strategy is thus developed to control Ni/NiO heterosurfaces in uniform and well-dispersed Ni-based nanocrystals, targeting both reaction steps synergistically. By systematically modulating the surface composition, we find that steering the elementary steps through tuning the Ni/NiO ratio can significantly enhance alkaline HER activity, and Ni/NiO nanocrystals with a Ni/NiO ratio of 23.7% deliver the best activity, outperforming other state-of-the-art analogues. The results suggest that integrating bicomponent active sites for elementary steps is effective for promoting alkaline HER, but they have to be balanced.

Combining the characteristics of the reverse distribution of solar resources and water resources in North Africa,West Africa and the Sahara,this paper proposes the West Africa-North Africa grid interconnection project to realize the optimal configuration of desert solar resources and surrounding water resources,and introduce the water resources of West Africa's Niger River and North Africa's desalinated seawater to improve the living environment and development conditions in the hinterland of the Sahara Desert;build photovoltaic bases along the route to send clean electricity to North Africa and West Africa.This paper studies the transmission channel path,electricity-water composite transmission technology and project scheme,and analyzes the economics of the project and the water supply and demand conditions of the Niger River.The research results show that it is feasible in hydrological characteristics to lead the Niger River water along the power transmission channel that crosses the Sahara Desert,and the new electricity-water composite transmission technology has obvious economic advantages.
