This paper examines the layered nostalgia embodied by one specific spatiotemporal site, the war-torn Republican capital of Nanjing, in Bai Xianyong＇s 1971 collection of short stories Taipei People and in Ye Zhaoyan＇s 1996 novel Nanjing 1937： A Love Story. Both Nanjing＇s historical reputation as an ancient capital for several short-lived dynasties and its special role in narrating Chinese identity and cultural traditions across the 1949 divide contribute to the city＇s symbolic significance in the literary tradition of ruin gazing. In the two texts under discussion, the layered ruins of Republican Nanjing--reminiscent of the decadent Six Dynasties （220-589） and witnessing the historical violence and physical as well as metaphorical dislocation resulting from World War II and the Chinese Civil War--constitute an ideal site for reflecting upon not only personal and national traumas but also traditional-modern tensions from diversified stances and angles. The related but divergent trajectories taken by Bai＇s and Ye＇s nostalgic gaze--one projected from the United States in the 196os by way of post-1949 Taipei and the other geographically located in contemporary Nanjing but culturally distanced from it--form an interesting dialogue, which may shed light on the fluidity of ruin gazing at a nexus of identity questions with reference to the embrace of modernity.

Spark is a widely studied plasma source for active species production;however,it ex-periences unstable transitions(e.***.to a thermal arc)at high frequencies or long pulse durations.In this study,the sparks generated in a pulse train were studied and modulated based on a physics‐corrected deep learning method.Our results show that a highly repeatable and stable spark plasma source can be achieved by automatically adjusting the voltage amplitude according to the discharge frequency in a high‐frequency pulse train within the time scale of the fluid response.The influences of the electron number density increasing mode and modulated driven voltage profiles on the energy efficiencies were also studied.

The nuclear pore complex(NPC),one of the largest protein complexes in eukaryotes,serves as a physical gate to regulate nucleocytoplasmic transport.Here,we determined the 8Åresolution cryo-electron microscopic(cryo-EM)structure of the outer rings containing nuclear ring(NR)and cytoplasmic ring(CR)from the Xenopus laevis NPC,with local resolutions reaching 4.9Å.With the aid of AlphaFold2,we managed to build a pseudoatomic model of the outer rings,including the Y complexes and flanking components.In this most comprehensive and accurate model of outer rings to date,the almost complete Y complex structure exhibits much tighter interaction in the hub region.In addition to two copies of Y complexes,each asymmetric subunit in CR contains five copies of Nup358,two copies of the Nup214 complex,two copies of Nup205 and one copy of newly identified Nup93,while that in NR contains one copy of Nup205,one copy of ELYS and one copy of Nup93.These in-depth structural features represent a great advance in understanding the assembly of NPCs.

Neurotrophic factors,currently administered orally or by intravenous drip or intramuscular injection,are the main method for the treatment of peripheral nerve crush injury.However,the low effective drug concentration arriving at the injury site results in unsatisfactory outcomes.Therefore,there is an urgent need for a treatment method that can increase the effective drug concentration in the injured area.In this study,we first fabricated a gelatin modified by methacrylic anhydride hydrogel and loaded it with vascular endothelial growth factor that allowed the controlled release of the neurotrophic factor.This modified gelatin exhibited good physical and chemical properties,biocompatibility and supported the adhesion and proliferation of RSC96 cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells.When injected into the epineurium of crushed nerves,the composite hydrogel in the rat sciatic nerve crush injury model promoted nerve regeneration,functional recovery and vascularization.The results showed that the modified gelatin gave sustained delivery of vascular endothelial growth factors and accelerated the repair of crushed peripheral nerves.

A tournament is an orientation of the complete graph.Tournaments form perhaps the most interesting class of digraphs and it has a great potential for application.Tournaments provide a model of the statistical technique called the method of paired comparisons and they have also been studied in connection with sociometric relations in small groups.In this paper,we investigate disjoint cycles of the same length in tournaments.In 2010,Lichiardopol conjectured that for given integers l≥3 and k≥1,any tournament with minimum out-degree at least(l-1)k-1 contains k disjoint l-cycles,where an l-cycle is a cycle of order l.Bang-Jensen et al.verified the conjecture for l=3 and Ma et al.proved that it also holds for l≥10.This paper provides a proof of the conjecture for the case of 9≥l≥4.

Classic L2-norm-based waveform tomography is often plagued by insurmountable cycle skipping problems;as a result,the iterative inversion falls into local minima,yielding erroneous images.According to the optimal transportation theory,we adopt a novel geometry-preserving misfit function based on the quadratic Wasserstein metric(W2-norm),which improves the stability and convexity of the inverse problem.Numerical experiments illustrate that W2-norm-based full-waveform tomography has a larger convergence radius and a faster convergence rate than the L2-norm and can effectively mitigate cycle skipping issues.We apply this method to the Longmen Shan area and obtain a reliable lithospheric velocity model.Our tomographic results indicate that the crystalline crust underlying the Sichuan Basin wedges into the crustal interior of the Tibetan Plateau,and the mid-lower crust of the eastern Tibetan Plateau is characterized by low shear-wave velocities,indicating that ductile crustal flow and strong interactions between terranes jointly dominate the uplift behavior of the Longmen Shan.Furthermore,we find that large earthquakes(e.g.,the Wenchuan and Lushan events)occur not only at the junction between high-and low-velocity regions but also in the transition zone from positive to negative radial anisotropy.These findings improve our understanding of the mechanism responsible for large earthquakes in this region.

A model of crust-mantle differentiation for the early Earth

The Archean continents,primarily composed of the felsic tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite(TTG)suite,were formed or conserved since~3.8 Ga,with significant growth of the continental crust since~2.7 Ga.The difficulty in direct differentiation of the felsic crustal components from Earth’s mantle peridotite leads to a requirement for the presence of a large amount of hydrated mafic precursor of TTG in Earth’s proto-crust,the origin of which,however,remains elusive.The mafic proto-crust may have formed as early as~4.4 Ga ago as reflected by the Hf and Nd isotopic signals from Earth’s oldest geological records.Such a significant time lag between the formation of the mafic proto-crust and the occurrence of felsic continental crust is not reconciled with a single-stage scenario of Earth’s early differentiation.Here,inspired by the volcanism-dominated heat-pipe tectonics witnessed on Jupiter’s moon Io and the resemblances of the intensive internal heating and active magmatism between the early Earth and the present-day Io,we present a conceptual model of Earth’s early crust-mantle differentiation,which involves an Io-like scenario of efficient extraction of a mafic proto-crust from the early mantle,followed by an intrusion-dominating regime that could account for the subsequent formation of the felsic continents as Earth cools.The model thus allows an early formation of the preTTG proto-crust and the generation of TTG in the continent by providing the favorable conditions for its subsequent melting.This model is consistent with the observed early fractionation of the Earth and the late but rapid formation and/or accumulation of the felsic components in the Archean continents,thus sheds new light on the early Earth’s differentiation and tectonic evolution.

Micro-forging(MF)is a novel surface modification technology which is capable of smoothening and strengthening the workpiece surface simultaneously.Based on analysis of the mechanism and energy conversion of micro-forging process,an electromagnetically driven microforging system is developed.To further grasp the kinetic characteristic of the equipment,a simulation model is established and its accuracy is verified.With the help of simulation and experimental results,we propose an input voltage optimization method,which drives the micro-forging head moving in a uniform and stable way.In this study,the influence of MF on surface integrity of Ti-6 Al-4 V(TC4)is firstly reported.Experimental results show that MF treatment reduces surface roughness(Ra)and increases micro-hardness by 48%and 11.8%at most,respectively.Besides,a compressive stress layer with an amplitude of-1000 MPa and a depth of 0.8 mm is observed.This study analyzes the performance and reveals the potential of micro-forging technology,which lays a solid foundation for expanding its application in TC4 surface modification.
