Improving ionic conductivity of von-Alpen-type NASICON ceramic electrolytes via magnesium doping

NASICON (sodium (Na) superionic conductor) compounds have attracted considerable attention as promising solid electrolyte materials for advanced Na-based batteries. In this study, we investigated the improvement in ionic conductivities of von-Alpen-type NASICON (vA-NASICON) ceramic electrolytes by introducing a magnesium ion (Mg^(2+)) as a heterogeneous element. The optimal Mg-doped vA-NASICON exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 3.64×10^(−3) S·cm^(−1), which was almost 80% higher than that of un-doped vA-NASICON. The changes in physicochemical properties of the vA-NASICONs through the Mg introduction were systematically analyzed, and their effects on the ionic conductivities of the vA-NASICON were studied in detail. When the optimal ratio of Mg^(2+) was used in a synthetic process, the relative density (96.6%) and grain boundary ionic conductivity (σgb) were maximized, which improved the total ionic conductivity (σt) of the vA-NASICON. However, when Mg^(2+) was introduced in excess, the ionic conductivity decreased because of the formation of an undesired sodium magnesium phosphate (NaxMgyPO_(4)) secondary phase. The results of this study are expected to be effectively applied in the development of advanced sodium-based solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivities.

A novel method to collect sperm from brood parasitic cuckoos:Urodeum stimulation(UroS)method

Sperm competition has been studied in numerous species as a representative example of postcopulatory sexual selection,where sampling sperm from male is the most basic and important *** collection can be tricky in birds,however,because unlike mammals,the genitals of birds are generally latent in the cloacal region and their characteristics vary among *** methods to collect sperm from different birds have been tested,such as cloacal massage,feces collection,and electro-stimulation,but their applicability varies depending on *** this study,we introduced the urodeum stimulation method(UroS method)to collect sperm from Cuculus cuckoos,such as the Common Cuckoo(***).These species are expected to have interesting patterns of pair bonding and sperm competition because of their unique breeding strategy called brood parasitism;however,it remains *** this study,we described the application of our new method to expel semen from male common cuckoos,measured the volume of semen collected,checked the presence of sperm in the semen sample,and finally estimated its success rate among 82 *** were successfully collected from 76 cuckoos(approximately 93%)and the colors and volumes of the samples were very *** was present in 43 of these samples(57%),showing a sperm observation rate approximately twice as high as that of the conventional cloacal massage *** believe that this novel method will contribute to a better understanding of postcopulatory sexual selection in avian brood parasites and facilitate the process of sperm collection and artificial insemination in other medium-sized birds.

Genetic variation of the PSCA gene(rs2294008) is not associated with the risk of prostate cancer

Prostate stem cell antigen（PSCA） is a cell-membrane glycoprotein consisting of 123 amino acids and highly expressed in the prostate,but there have been few reports on the relationship between rs2294008 of PSCA and prostate cancer in the ***,we evaluated the association between rs2294008 and the risk of prostate cancer.A total of 240 prostate cancer patients and 306 controls（patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia） were *** analysis of rs2294008 of PSCA was performed using *** regression analysis was performed according to the genotype of PSCA *** found that CT and TT genotypes were associated with an insignificant risk of prostate cancer compared with the CC genotype（P= 0.627 and 0.397,respectively）.In addition,there was no significant difference in rs2294008 according to clinicopathological parameters,such as age,Gleason score,prostate-specific antigen（PSA）,stage,and metastasis in prostate cancer（P 〉 0.05 for each）.Age,Gleason score,PSA,pathologic stage,and metastasis did not modify the association between PSCA and the risk of prostate cancer（each P 〉 0.05 for each）.Taken together,the genetic polymorphism of PSCA rs2294008 was not associated with the risk of prostate *** results suggest that rs2294008 may not play a role in prostate carcinogenesis.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of a Novel Ternary Ni(ii) Complex with 2-Hydroxyl-1,10- phenanthroline and 2-Hydroxynicotinic Acid as Ligands

A novel ternary complex of [NiL1L2·2H2O]·NO3·H2O （L1 = 2-hydroxyl-1,10-phenanthroline （HOphen）, L2 = 2-hydroxynicotinic acid （H2nicO）） was synthesized, and its crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction and further characterized by infrared and elementary analysis. The title complex （C18H18NiN4O10, Mr = 509.07） belongs to the triclinic system, space group P1^- with a = 712490（7）, b = 11.0164（10）, c = 13.3864（13）A, α = 91.6040（10）,β= 98.8620（10）, γ= 107.1140（10）°, V= 1006.43（17）A^3, Z = 2, Dc = 1.680 g/cm^3,μ= 1.032 mm^-1, F（000） = 524, the final R = 0.0461 and wR= 0.1238. In the complex, the Ni（H） ion is six-coordinated to assume a distorted octahedral geometry, and a 3D supramolecular network comes into being via weak intermolecular interactions of X-O--.H （X = N, O）.

Effect of Nitrogenous Fertilizer Treatment on Mineral Metabolism in Grazing Yaks

To assess the impact of N fertilization on contents of mineral elements in herbage and the effect of increased forage S on the copper metabolism of grazing yaks, study was conducted during the summer grazing season （2005, 2006, and 2007）. Pasture replicates （20 ha; n=3 per treatment） received the same fertilizer treatment in each growing season, consisting of i） 90 kg N ha^-1 from quickly available nitrogen, ii） 90 kg N ha^-1 from ammonium nitrate, iii） 90 kg N ha^-1 from ammonium sulfate, and iv） control （no fertilizer）. Forage sampling was collected at 60 days intervals following fertilization （10 samples per pasture） for Cu, Mo, Mn, Se, Fe, Zn, Ca, and P. To determine the effect of fertilizer treatment on mineral metabolism in grazing yaks, liver and blood samples were collected at the start and end of the study period in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Ammonium sulfate fertilization increased （P 〈 0.01） forage S concentration. Plant tissue N concentrations were increased by N fertilization, regardless of source in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Yaks grazing S fertilization pastures had lower （P〈0.05） liver and blood Cu concentrations at the end of the study period in 2005, 2006, and 2007, compared with urea, ammonium nitrate, and control. Nominal increases in forage in vitro organic matter digestibility were realized by fertilization, regardless of N source in each year.

Fujita Type Conditions to Heat Equation with Variable Source

This paper studies heat equation with variable exponent ut = △u ＋ Up（x） 4- Uq in RN × （0, T）, where p（x） is a nonnegative continuous, bounded function, 0 〈 p- = infp（x） ≤ p（x） ≤ supp（x） = p＋. It is easy to understand for the problem that all nontrivial nonnegative solutions must be global if and only if max{p＋,q} ≤1. Based on the interaction between the two sources with fixed and variable exponents in the model, some Fujita type conditions are determined that that all nontrivial nonnegative solutions blow up in finite time if 0 〈 q ≤ 1 with p＋〉 1, or 1 〈 q 〈 1 ＋2/N. In addition, if q 〉 1 ＋2/N, then （i） all solutions blow up in finite time with 0 〈 p- ≤ p＋ ≤ 1 ＋2/N; （ii） there are both global and nonglobal solutions for p- ≤ 1 ＋ 2/N; and （iii） there are functions p（x） such that all solutions blow up in finite time, and also functions p（x） such that the problem possesses global solutions when p＋〈 1＋2/N 〈 p＋.

Improvement, Comparison, and Application of Field Measurement Methods for Grassland Vegetation Fractional Coverage

As one of the important vegetation parameters, vegetation fractional coverage （VFC） is more difficult to measure accurately among a good many parameters of plant communities. The temperate typical steppe in the north of China was chosen for investigation in the present study and a digital camera was used to measure herb community coverage in the field, adopting methods of ocular estimation, gridding measurement, visual interpretation, supervised classification, and information extraction of color spatial transformation to calculate the VFC of images captured by the digital camera. In addition VFC calculated by various methods was analyzed and compared VFC, enabling us to propose an effective method for measuring VFC using a digital camera. The results of the present study indicate that：（i） as two common useful and effective methods of measuring VFC with a digital camera, not only does the error of estimated values of visual estimation and supervised classification vary considerably, but the degree of automatization is very low and depends, to a great extent, on the manipulator; （ii） although the method of visual interpretation may assure the precision of the calculated VFC and enable the precision of results obtained using other methods to be determined, as far as large quantities of data are concerned, this method has the disadvantages of wasting time and energy, and the applications of this method are limited; （iii） the precision and stability of VFC calculated using the grid and node method are superior to those of visual estimation and supervised classification and inferior to those of visual interpretation, but, as for visual interpretation and supervised classification, gridding measurements are difficult to apply in practice because they are not time efficient; and （iv） in terms of the precision of calculation of the VFC, an information-extracting model based on an intensity, hue, saturation （IHS） color space-multi-component series segmentation strategy is s
