Preparation of Flaky Hexagonal Nanoporous Au-Cu and Au Particles via Dealloying

Nanoporous metals have attracted signifi cant attention owing to their excellent physical,chemical,and biological properties.However,preparing ultrafi ne nanoporous metal particles(1–5μm)with specifi c geometries remains challenging.Herein,we report a simple strategy to prepare ultrafi ne fl aky hexagonal nanoporous Au-Cu and Au particles via dealloying.Mg-based alloy ribbons with ultrafi ne fl aky hexagonal Mg-Au(Cu)-Gd particles dispersed in a Mg-Cu(Au)-Gd metallic glassy matrix were prepared.The size and morphology of the precipitated fl aky hexagonal Mg-Au(Cu)-Gd particles were controlled by the solidifi cation process of a Mg 61 Cu 21 Au 7 Gd 11 alloy melt.Ultrafi ne fl aky hexagonal nanoporous Au-Cu particles(diagonal diameter 2.58±0.44μm,ligament size~28 nm),Au-1 particles(diagonal diameter 2.38±0.35μm,ligament size~83 nm)and Au-2 particles(diagonal diameter 2.39±0.44μm,ligament size~66 nm)were prepared via ultrasonic-assisted dealloying of Mg 61 Cu 21 Au 7 Gd 11 alloy ribbons in 0.25 M HCl/ethanol,1 M HCl/ethanol and 0.25 M HNO 3/ethanol solutions,respectively.The ultrafi ne fl aky hexagonal nanoporous Au-Cu and Au particles with a large specifi c surface area have a uniform particle size and shape,implying that they possess adequate powder fl uidity and excellent catalytic properties.Moreover,the formation mechanism of the MgAu(Cu)Gd phase in solidifi ed Mg-Cu-Au-Gd alloys was discussed.This study provides a novel approach for synthesizing nanoporous metal particles with a specifi c geometry.

CRISPR/Cas-mediated genome editing in human pluripotent stem cells(hPSCs)offers unprecedented opportunities for developing in vitro disease modeling,drug screening and cell-based therapies.To efficiently deliver the CRISPR components,here we developed two all-in-one vectors containing Cas9/gRNA and inducible Cas13d/gRNA cassettes for robust genome editing and RNA interference respectively.These vectors utilized the PiggyBac transposon system,which allows stable expression of CRISPR components in hPSCs.The Cas9 vector PB-CRISPR exhibited high efficiency(up to 99%)of inducing gene knockout in both protein-coding genes and long non-coding RNAs.The other inducible Cas13d vector achieved extremely high efficiency in RNA knockdown(98%knockdown for CD90)with optimized gRNA designs.Taken together,our PiggyBac CRISPR vectors can serve as powerful toolkits for studying gene functions in hPSCs.

Methodology for predicting the life of plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coating system considering oxidation-induced damage

The lifespan of plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coating(TBC)systems is difficult to predict owing to the variety of microstructures and deterioration histories.In this study,we developed a novel TBC damage model to reflect deterioration histories;thus,it can be applied to various TBCs.Damage to TBCs is classifed into oxidation and mechanical damage;therefore,a detailed deterioration history can be reflected.In addition,by introducing a virtual S–N diagram,a life prediction model that can be applied to TBCs with various microstructures was established.We used the proposed damage and life prediction models in isothermal aging and thermal cycle tests with different aging cycles.The predicted lifespan of TBCs by using the proposed models was within 95%of the results obtained by performing actual tests in the temperature range of 1150–1350℃.

Effects of pulsed radiofrequency on spasticity in patients with spinal cord injury:a report of two cases

Spasticity following spinal cord injury（SCI） results in functional deterioration and reduced quality of life. Herein, we report two SCI patients who presented with good response to pulsed radiofrequency（PRF） for the management of spasticity in the lower extremities. Patient 1（a 47-year-old man） had complete thoracic cord injury and showed a phasic spasticity on the extensor of both knees（3–4 beats clonus per every 30 seconds） and tonic spasticity（Modified Ashworth Scale： 3） on both hip adductors. Patient 2（a 64-yearold man） had incomplete cervical cord injury and showed a right ankle clonus（approximately 20 beats） when he walked. After the application of PRF to both L2 and L3 dorsal root ganglion（DRG）（patient 1） and right S1 DRG（patient 2） with 5 Hz and 5 ms pulsed width for 360 seconds at 45 V under the C-arm guide, all spasticity disappeared or was reduced. Moreover, the effects of PRF were sustained for approximately 6 months with no side effects. We believe that PRF treatment can be useful for patients with spasticity after SCI.

Compressive Strength of Basic Magnesium Sulfate Cement Coral Aggregate Concrete(MCAC)on Non-Destructive Testing

Basic magnesium sulfate cement coral aggregate concrete(MCAC)is a new type of concrete consisting of basic magnesium sulfate cement,coarse coral aggregate,coral reef sand and seawater.The rebound hammer(RH),the ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV)and the compressive strength(fcu)tests of 14 sets of cube specimens of the MCAC after 28 d of aging were conducted.The impact of the content and length of sisal fiber on the relationship between the fcu-RH and the fcu-UPV was determined.A mathematical model was established to predict the strength of the MCAC using the UPV,RH,and comprehensive UPV/RH methods and to obtain the curves of test strength.The applicability of the test strength curves of ordinary portland concrete(OPC),light-weight aggregate concrete(LAC),and coral aggregate concrete(CAC)to MCAC was assessed.The results showed that the test strength curves of OPC,LAC and CAC were inappropriate to determine the strength of MCAC using non-destructive method.The relative standard error of the curves of test strength of the RH method and the comprehensive method met the specifications,whereas that of the UPV method did not.

Nickel-Catalyzed Dicarbofunctionalization of Alkenes

As a straightforward strategy for rapidly increasing molecular complexity,dicarbofunctionalization of alkenes has attracted substantial interests of organic synthesis,medicine chemistry,and materials science.Nickel-catalyzed cascade dicarbofunctionalizations have been flourished in this area recently,and nickel-mediated radical pathways particularly offer new opportunities in conjunctive cross-couplings with alkyl coupling partners.Herein,we give a comprehensive review of nickel-catalyzed dicarbofunctionalization of alkenes through a historical perspective,including intermolecular three-component reactions and intramolecular cascade reactions.Among the pathways discussed in this review,the carbometallation/cross-coupling process and the radical addition/cross-coupling process are the two major pathways for the nickel-catalyzed dicarbofunctionalization of alkenes.The oxidative cyclization and 1,2-metallate shift processes are also selectively discussed.These methods overcome the limitations associated with the reactions using noble metals in the field,providing an efficient and straightforward access to structurally diversified molecules.

High IL-23^(+)cells infiltration correlates with worse clinical outcomes and abiraterone effectiveness in patients with prostate cancer

Individualized treatment of prostate cancer depends on an accurate stratification of patients who are sensitive to various treatments.Interleukin-23(IL-23)was reported to play a significant role in prostate cancer.Here,we aimed to explore the clinical value of IL-23-secreting(IL-23^(+))cells in prostate cancer patients.We evaluated interleukin-23A(IL-23A)expression in The Cancer Genome Atlas database and retrospectively enrolled 179 treatment-naive metastatic prostate cancer patients diagnosed in our institute between June 2012 and December 2014.IL-23^(+)cells were stained and evaluated via immunohistochemistry.Further,survival and multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted to explore the prognostic value of IL-23^(+)cells.We found that IL-23A expression correlated with disease progression,while IL-23^(+)cells were clearly stained within prostate cancer tissue.Patients with higher Gleason scores and multiple metastatic lesions tended to have more IL-23^(+)cell infiltration.Further analyses showed that patients with higher levels of IL-23^(+)cells had significantly worse overall survival(hazard ratio[HR]=2.996,95%confidence interval[95%CI]:1.812–4.955;P=0.001)and a higher risk of developing castration resistance(HR=2.725,95%CI:1.865–3.981;P=0.001).Moreover,subgroup analyses showed that when patients progressed to a castration-resistant status,the prognostic value of IL-23^(+)cells was observed only in patients treated with abiraterone instead of docetaxel.Therefore,we showed that high IL-23^(+)cell infiltration is an independent prognosticator in patients with metastatic prostate cancer.IL-23^(+)cell infiltration may correlate with abiraterone effectiveness in castration-resistant prostate cancer patients.

Value of Adjuvant Radiotherapy for Thymoma with Myasthenia Gravis after Extended Thymectomy

Background：The co-existence of myasthenia gravis （MG） and thymoma makes the surgical treatment more complicated and adjuvant radiation more controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate adjuvant radiotherapy for thymoma with MG after extended thymectomy.Methods：A total of 181 patients with both MG and thymoma were recruited between 2003 and 2014 at Tongren Hospital, China. Among all the patients, 157 patients received radiation therapy after surgery （Group A）; whereas the other 24 patients did not receive radiation therapy （Group B）. According to the time that patients started mediastinal radiation therapy, we subdivided the 157 patients in Group A into subgroups （1-month subgroup, n = 98; 2-month subgroup, n = 7; and 3-month subgroup, n = 52）. We then compared the effect of the mediastinal radiation therapy across these different groups using the survival rate, the rate of postoperative myasthenic crisis, and the complete stable remission （CSR） rate as the primary endpoints.Results：There was a significant difference in the occurrence of postoperative myasthenic crisis between 1-month subgroup and Group B （χ2 = 4.631, P = 0.031）. The rates of reaching CSR were 32.6% in 1-month subgroup, 25% in 3-month subgroup, and 22.7% in Group B, respectively. The overall survival rates of 1-month subgroup, 3-month subgroup, and Group B were 88.8%, 83.3%, and 77.3%, respectively. Analysis on the Kaplan-Meier survival curves demonstrated that within 8 years after surgery, there was no significant difference in aspects of overall survival and disease-free survival between 1-month subgroup and Group B, and between 3-month subgroup and Group B; over 8 years after surgery, the disease-free survival rates in 1-month subgroup, 3-month subgroup and Group B were 79.4%, 70.6%, and 55.3%, respectively.Conclusions：Adjuvant radiation within 1 month after extended thymectomy may be helpful in controlling postoperative MG, such as decreasing the possibility of postoperative myasthenic crisis, and raising cumulative probabilities of

A Comparative Study on Polynomial Expansion Method and Polynomial Method of Particular Solutions

In this study,the polynomial expansion method(PEM)and the polynomial method of particular solutions(PMPS)are applied to solve a class of linear elliptic partial differential equations(PDEs)in two dimensions with constant coefﬁcients.In the solution procedure,the sought solution is approximated by the Pascal polynomials and their particular solutions for the PEM and PMPS,respectively.The multiple-scale technique is applied to improve the conditioning of the resulted linear equations and the accuracy of numerical results for both of the PEM and PMPS.Some mathematical statements are provided to demonstrate the equivalence of the PEM and PMPS bases as they are both bases of a certain polynomial vector space.Then,some numerical experiments were conducted to validate the implementation of the PEM and PMPS.Numerical results demonstrated that the PEM is more accurate and well-conditioned than the PMPS and the multiple-scale technique is essential in these polynomial methods.
