Anticancer effect of linalool via cancer-specific hydroxyl radical generation in human colon cancer

AIM To investigate the anticancer mechanisms of the monoterpenoid alcohol linalool in human colon cancer *** The cytotoxic effect of linalool on the human colon cancer cell lines and a human fibroblast cell line was examined using the WST-8 assay. The apoptosisinducing effect of linalool was measured using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase d UTP nickend labeling assay and flow cytometry with Annexin V. Oxidative stress was investigated by staining for diphenyl-1-pyrenylphosphine, which is a cellular lipid peroxidation marker, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Sixteen SCID mice xenografted with human cancer cells were randomized into 3 groups for in vivo analysis: control and low-dose and high-dose linalool groups. The control group was administered tap water orally every 3 d. The linalool treatment groups were administered 100 or 200 μg/kg linalool solution orally for the same period. All mice were sacrificed under anesthesia 21 d after tumor inoculation, and tumors and organs were collected for immunohistochemistry using an anti-4-hydroxynonenal antibody. Tumor weights were measured and compared between groups. RESULTS Linalool induced apoptosis of cancer cells in vitro, following the cancer-specific induction of oxidative stress, which was measured based on spontaneous hydroxyl radical production and delayed lipid peroxidation. Mice in the high-dose linalool group exhibited a 55% reduction in mean xenograft tumor weight compared with mice in the control group(P n addition, tumor-specific lipid peroxidation was observed in the in vivo *** Linalool exhibited an anticancer effect via cancerspecific oxidative stress, and this agent has potential for application in colon cancer therapy.

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection and lipoprotein metabolism

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) is a hepatotrophic virus and a major cause of chronic liver disease,including hepatocellular carcinoma,worldwide. The life cycle of HCV is closely associated with the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins. The main function of lipoproteins is transporting lipids throughout the body. Triglycerides,free cholesterol,cholesteryl esters,and phospholipids are the major components of the transported lipids. The pathway of HCV assembly and secretion is closely linked to lipoprotein production and secretion,and the infectivity of HCV particles largely depends on the interaction of lipoproteins. Moreover,HCV entry into hepatocytes is strongly influenced by lipoproteins. The key lipoprotein molecules mediating these interactions are apolipoproteins. Apolipoproteins are amphipathic proteins on the surface of a lipoprotein particle,which help stabilize lipoprotein structure. They perform a key role in lipoprotein metabolism by serving as receptor ligands,enzyme co-factors,and lipid transport carriers. Understanding the association between the life cycle of HCV and lipoprotein metabolism is important because each step of the life cycle of HCV that is associated with lipoprotein metabolism is a potential target for anti-HCV therapy. In this article,we first concisely review the nature of lipoprotein and its metabolism to better understand the complicated interaction of HCV with lipoprotein. Then,we review the outline of the processes of HCV assembly,secretion,and entry into hepatocytes,focusing on the association with lipoproteins. Finally,we discuss the clinical aspects of disturbed lipid/lipoprotein metabolism and the significance of dyslipoproteinemia in chronic HCV infection with regard to abnormal apolipoproteins.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis associated with toxic epidermal necrolysis: A case report

Toxic epidermal necrolysis(TEn) is a severe adverse drug reaction, which is characterized by erythema, blisters, and/or erosions of the mucous membranes and skin, but intestinal involvement is rare. In contrast, pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis(PCI) is a rare condition associated with a wide variety of underlying diseases, but to date no patient has presented with PCI associated with TEn. A 55-year-old man was admitted to intensive care unit for treatment of TEn caused by phenobarbital. On day 8 after admission, he presented with progressive abdominal distention and hypotension. Computed tomography(CT) showed gas in the superior mesenteric vein and air filled cysts in the walls of the small intestine. He was suspected of having septic shock due to PCI. As there were no indications of bowel ischemia or necrosis, the patient was managed conservatively with antibiotics and oxygen therapy. On day 10 after admission, he was weaned off catecholamines, with CT on day 11 showing complete resolution of gas in the superior mesenteric vein and air filled cysts. To our knowledge, this article describes the first patient presenting with PCI associated with TEn.

Corn Leaf Water Retention as Affected by OrganicFertilizations and Effective Microbes Applications

Effects of organic fertilizers and effective microbes on leaf water retention of sweet corn (Zea mays L. ***-Bantam) were studied. Sweet corns were grown with organic or chemical fertilizers with or without effective microbes (EM). A water retention curve was obtained by drying the excised leaves under a light of 500 μmol (m2·s)-1. The curve shows two distinct phases. The initial steep slope indicates the water loss speed by stomatal transpiration (Est) and the gentle slope of the second phase indicates water loss speed by cuticular transpiration (Ecu). Both Est and Ecu were lower for leaves of plants grown with organic materials than for those with chemical fertilizers. Addition of EM to both organic and chemical fertilizers decreased Est but showed no effect on Ecu. The water retention ability of the excised leaves was proportional to photosynthetic maintenance ability under soil water deficit conditions as well as the solute concentration in leaves. The results suggested that organic fertilization and EM application increased water stress resistance both under in situ conditions and in excised leaves of sweet corn plants.

Structural Implications of Universal Complementarities in Translation—High Accuracy at the Decoding Site

X-ray structures of transfer RnAs (tRnAs) bound to the whole ribosome do not fully explain the mechanism of translation. The cause of the failure seems to come mainly from a high Mg2+ ion concentration compared to that in the living cells. There exists a wide range of nucleotide sequence conservation in tRnA and ribosomal RnAs (rRnAs) of small and large subunits as well as sequence complementarities, that seems to explain how high accuracy in translation can be achieved at the decoding site. Conformational transition between U33-folded and U33-extended forms of anticodon loops of tRnAs and G-C pair formation and disruption between C1399 and G1504 of 16S rRnA, etc. play the central role in explaining why E-site tRnA can automatically be expelled when an aminoacyl-tRnA at the A site turns out to be cognate.

Recently, demands for weight reduction and long-term service for machines and components operating unde heavy loads have led to increasing applications of high strength steels. In general, en durance ratios of high strength steels are fairy low in comparison with the ones in low and medium strength steels. This is caused by their high sensitivities for notch and humidity. Maraging steel is an ultra-high strength steel which is hardened by the precipitation of intermetallic compounds in martensitic structure. The steel has the highest tensile strength and high ductility among practically used steels. However, the fatigue strength, which is the most important property for structure purpose steels, is very low compared with the static strength similar to other high strength steels. Moreover, an internal fracture occurs in long life region in many high strength steels and surface hardened steels.

This research was aimed at isolating and identifying the predominant lactic acid bacteria(LAB) in the traditional Chinese salt-fermented soybean food,douchi,from Yunnan,*** predominant LAB present were isolated and identified by conventional culture-dependent methods combined with molecular biological *** hundred and sixty isolates were obtained from thirty kinds of traditional fermented douchi from six cities and counties in Yunnan,and those strains were divided into twelve groups by their morphological and biochemical *** on 16S ribosomal DnA(rDnA) sequencing and analysis,56 representative strains were identified as belonging to 6 genera and 14 species:Lactobacillus(4 spp.),Weissella(3 spp.),Pediococcus(2 spp.),Staphylococcus(2 spp.),Enterococcus(1 sp.),and Bacillus(2 spp.).The results show that douchi contains a large natural population of LAB of diverse composition from which some strains could be selected as starters for functional fermented *** is the first study on the original douchi from Yunnan,and the results suggest that it may be a useful source for the isolation of *** study has also laid a foundation for further research on developing functional douchi products.

Bile duct hamartomas(von Mayenburg complexes) mimicking liver metastases from bile duct cancer:MRC findings

We present a case of a 72-year-old man with a common bile duct cancer, who was initially believed to have multiple liver metastases based on computed tomography findings, and in whom magnetic resonance cholangiography （MRC） revealed a diagnosis of bile duct hamartomas. At exploration for pancreaticoduodenectomy, liver palpation revealed disseminated nodules at the surface of the liver. These nodules showed gray-white nodular lesions of about 0.5 cm in diameter scattered on the surface of both liver lobes, which were looked like multiple liver metastases from bile duct cancer. Frozen section of the liver biopsy disclosed multiple bile ducts with slightly dilated lumens embedded in the collagenous stroma characteristics of multiple bile duct hamartomas （BDHs）. Only two reports have described the MRC features of bile duct hamartomas. Of all imaging procedures, MRC provides the most relevant features for the imaging diagnosis of bile duct hamartomas.

On-Foot Content Tourism Support System in Urban Tourist Destinations of Japan

It has also become possible for people to easily acquire tourism information that matches their own particular tastes using the internet, so tourism has taken a more diverse range of forms. One of these is “content tourism” that became popular in recent Japan. Sgains such a backdrop, the present study aimed to design, develop, operate and evaluate a system that integrated three subsidiary systems including Web-geographic information systems (GIS), a tourism information system and social networking service (SnS) in order to support walking-based content tourism. This made it possible to create sightseeing routes and to submit, store, and view tourist attraction information. Additionally, the system was operated for one month in Chofu City, Tokyo Metropolis, and the total number of users was 42. During the operation period, 12 new sightseeing routes were created and 30 new tourist attractions were submitted. Based on the results of the web questionnaire survey, users highly evaluated the key functions of the system and the overall system. However, of those key functions, evaluations were somewhat low for the ease of operation of the creation function of sightseeing route, so the improvements must be made. From the results of the access log analysis of users’ log data, the total number of sessions in this system was 134, 64% used PCs, 36% used mobile devices, Therefore, the approach of designing the system such that the same functions could be used regardless of the type of device one is using was an effective design approach.
