Effects of urban street trees on human thermal comfort and physiological indices: a case study in Changchun city, China

Planting trees along urban streets is one of the most important strategies to improve the urban thermal environment.However,the net impacts of urban street trees on human thermal comfort and physiological parameters are still less clear.On three similar east-west orientated streets with different degrees of tree cover-low(13%),medium(35%),and high(75%),urban microclimatic parameters and human physiological indices for six male students were simultaneously measured on three cloudless days in summer 2018.The results show that the differences in tree cover were predominant in influencing urban thermal environment and comfort.The street with the highest tree cover had significantly lower physiological equivalent temperature(PET) and more comfortable than the other two streets.The frequency of strong heat stress(PET> 35℃) was 64%,11 %,and 0%,respectively,for streets with low,medium,and high tree cover.For the six male university students,human physiological indices varied greatly across the three streets with different tree cover.Systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure,and pulse rate increased with decreasing tree cover.The results also suggest that urban thermal environment and comfort had considerable impact on human physiological parameters.Our study provides reasons for urban planners to plant trees along streets to improve the thermal environment and promote urban sustainability.

To the Editor: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most aggressive cancer types and places a heavy burden on human health. The early diagnosis and prognosis monitoring of ESCC is important for therapy. Despite recent progress in treatment regimens for ESCC, the prognosis of ESCC remains poor.[1] Therefore, it is important to find new molecular therapeutic targets and prognostic monitoring biomarkers for ESCC patients. In this study, we aimed to explore new prognostic biomarkers for ESCC.

Layered coordination polymer with two-dimensional covalent bismuth-organic networks:Semiconductor and lithium ion storage

Single crystals of a bismuth-based coordination polymer(CP)with carboxyl-thiol ligands,[Bi(C_(8)H_(2)O_(4)S_(2))(C2H8N)]n(Bi-DSBDC-DMA,DMBDC=2,5-disulfur-1,4-dicarboxylate,DMA=dimethylamine),have been successfully synthesized.X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Bi-DSBDC-DMA possesses a layered structure,with two-dimensional(2D)Bi-DSBDC networks alternating with layers composed of dimethylamine ions.This material demonstrates semiconducting properties,featuring an optical bandgap of 2.2 eV and an electrical conductivity of 2×10^(-8) S/cm.Furthermore,electrodes based on this material exhibit a capacity of 250 mAh/g after 200 cycles for lithium-ion storage.

The deficient agricultural water caused by water shortage is a crucial limiting factor of horticultural production.Among many agricultural water-saving technologies,regulated deficit irrigation(RDI)has been proven to be one of the effective technologies to improve water use efficiency and reduce water waste on the premise of maintaining the quality of agricultural products.RDI was first reported more than 40years ago,although it has been applied in some areas,little is known about understanding of the implementation method,scope of application and detailed mechanism of RDI,resulting in the failure to achieve the effect that RDI should have.This review refers to the research on RDI in different crops published in recent years,summarizes the definition,equipment condition,function,theory illumination,plant response and application in different crops of RDI,and looks forward to its prospect.We expect that this review will provide valuable guidance for researchers and producers concerned,and support the promotion of RDI in more horticultural crops.

Characterization of road surfacing aggregates based on their mineralogical fingerprint

To ensure the safety of infrastructure users,the long-term skid resistance is a crucial factor and is determined in large by the mineralogical and morphological characteristics of surfacing aggregate.Most studies have investigated these aggregate properties separately without considering the interrelation between one another.The objective of this study is to consider the morphological characteristics as well as the mineralogical fingerprint of aggregate to develop an innovative approach to optimize the aggregate selection process.The investigations are based on 11 different aggregate types with a broad range of mineralogy,commonly used in Germany.The long-term influence of polishing and wearing on the surface aggregate was simulated by means of the Aachen Polishing Machine and the MicroDeval test respectively.To evaluate the impact of these tests,the aggregate shape was characterized by means of an imaging system called Aggregate Image Measurement System while the skid resistance of aggregates was evaluated with the British Pendulum Test.The test results show that the quartz and calcite are the key crystals to determine the anti-wear resistance of aggregates.A correlation between the skid resistance,morphological properties and mineralogy is derived,which proves the mineralogical fingerprint technology is practical for characterization of aggregates used in pavement surface layers.

Illuminating single genomic loci in live cells by reducing nuclear background fluorescence

The tagging of genomic loci in living cells provides visual evidence for the study of genomic spatial organization and gene interaction.CRISPR/dCas9(clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/deactivated Cas9)labeling system labels genes through binding of the dCas9/sgRNA/fluorescent protein complex to repeat sequences in the target genomic loci.However,the existence of numerous fluorescent proteins in the nucleus usually causes a high background fluorescent readout.This study aims to limit the number of fluorescent modules entering the nucleus by redesigning the current CRISPR/dCas9-SunTag labeling system consisting of dCas9-SunTag-NLS(target module)and scFv-sfGFP-NLS(signal module).We removed the nuclear location sequence(NLS)of the signal module and inserted two copies of EGFP into the signal module.The ratio of the fluorescent intensity of the nucleus to that of the cytoplasm(N/C ratio)was decreased by 71%,and the ratio of the signal to the background(S/B ratio)was increased by 1.6 times.The system can stably label randomly selected genomic loci with as few as 9 repeat sequences.

Absolute control of helicity at the C-termini in quinoline oligoamide foldamers by chiral oxazolylaniline moieties

Absolute one-handed chiral quinoline tetramers andoctamers containing different oxazolylanilines at the C-terminus have been synthesized.The absolute one-handed sense and diastereomeric excess values were valued by^1H NMR.X-ray crystal diffractionand CD studies reveal that the S-oxazolylaniline always induces a P-handed helicity and the absolute helicity is driven by the stable three-center hydrogen bonding between protons in the amide and N atoms in oxazolylaniline and adjacent quinoline ring.CPL investigations demonstrated that S-CQn-a-d are CPL active and its g(lum)values are dependent on its length.Interestingly,the sizes of the substituents in the chiral centers are different,howeve r,they exert no effect on the dissymmetric factors g(abs)and g(lum)of quinoline oligoamide foldamers.

Aptamer-Based Fluorescent Assay for Sensitive Detection of Cardiac Troponin Ⅰ

Acute myocardial infarction(AMI)is a major health problem leading to high rates of mortality and morbidity.Biomarker cardiac troponin I(cTnI)has shown high sensitivity and specificity towards AMI detection,and has been regarded as"gold standard".An ultrasensitive method to detectcTnI with low concentration in human fluid is essential.In this paper,we developed an aptamer-based assay coupled with rolling circle amplification(RCA)and molecular beacon probe for sensitive detection ofcTnI.In this strategy,aptamer acts as a bridge to communicate between oligonucleotides andcTnI.RCA reaction produces a single-stranded tandem repeated copy of the circular template,which are recognized by fluorescence molecular beacon probe.With this strategy,highly sensitive and specific detection of cTnI was realized with the lowest detectable concentration of 7.24 pg/m L.The developed aptamer-RCA assay can be a promising tool in clinical samples analysis.The assay can also analyze other disease-related biomarkers by replacing the aptamer.

Two-Dimensional Direction Finding via Sequential Sparse Representations

The problem of two-dimensional direction finding is approached by using a multi-layer Lshaped array. The proposed method is based on two sequential sparse representations,fulfilling respectively the estimation of elevation angles,and azimuth angles. For the estimation of elevation angles,the weighted sub-array smoothing technique for perfect data decorrelation is used to produce a covariance vector suitable for exact sparse representation,related only to the elevation angles. The estimates of elevation angles are then obtained by sparse restoration associated with this elevation angle dependent covariance vector. The estimates of elevation angles are further incorporated with weighted sub-array smoothing to yield a second covariance vector for precise sparse representation related to both elevation angles,and azimuth angles. The estimates of azimuth angles,automatically paired with the estimates of elevation angles,are finally obtained by sparse restoration associated with this latter elevation-azimuth angle related covariance vector. Simulation results are included to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

The Applications of Order Reduction Methods in Nonlinear Dynamic Systems

Two different order reduction methods of the deterministic and stochastic systems are discussed in this paper.First,the transient proper orthogonal decomposition(T-POD)method is introduced based on the high-dimensional nonlinear dynamic system.The optimal order reduction conditions of the T-POD method are provided by analyzing the rotor-bearing system with pedestal looseness fault at both ends.The efficiency of the T-POD method is verified via comparing with the results of the original system.Second,the polynomial dimensional decomposition(PDD)method is applied to the 2 DOFs spring system considering the uncertain stiffness to study the amplitude-frequency response.The numerical results obtained by the PDD method agree well with the Monte Carlo simulation(MCS)method.The results of the PDD method can approximate to MCS better with the increasing of the polynomial order.Meanwhile,the Uniform-Legendre polynomials can eliminate perturbation of the PDD method to a certain extent via comparing it with the Gaussian-Hermite polynomials.
