MicroRnA Regulation in Extreme Environments: Differential Expression of MicroRnAs in the Intertidal Snail Littorina littorea During Extended Periods of Freezing and Anoxia

Several recent studies of vertebrate adaptation to environmental stress have suggested roles for microRnAs （miRnAs） in regulating glo- bal suppression of protein synthesis and/or restructuring protein expression patterns. The present study is the first to characterize stress- responsive alterations in the expression of miRnAs during natural freezing or anoxia exposures in an invertebrate species, the intertidal gastropod Littorina littorea. These snails are exposed to anoxia and freezing conditions as their environment constantly fluctuates on both a tidal and seasonal basis. The expression of selected miRnAs that are known to influence the cell cycle, cellular signaling pathways, carbohydrate metabolism and apoptosis was evaluated using RT-PCR. Compared to controls, significant changes in expression were observed for miR-la-1, miR-34a and miR-29b in hepatopancreas and for miR-la-1, miR-34a, miR-133a, miR-125b, miR-29b and miR-2a in foot muscle after freezing exposure at -6 ~C for 24 h （P 〈 0.05）. In addition, in response to anoxia stress for 24 h, significant changes in expression were also observed for miR-la-1, miR-210 and miR-29b in hepatopancreas and for miR-1 a-1, miR-34a, miR-133a, miR-29b and miR-2a in foot muscle （P 〈 0.05）. Moreover, protein expression of Dicer, an enzyme responsible for mature microRnA processing, was increased in foot muscle during freezing and anoxia and in hepatopancreas during freezing. Alterations in expression of these miRnAs in L. littorea tissues may contribute to organismal survival under freezing and anoxia.

The Ln_(2)niO_(4+δ)-based layered phases have attracted much attention as components for high-performance protonic ceramic fuel cells(PCFCs)and electrolysis cells(PCECs)enabling energy conversion with good efficiency and low *** present paper aims at rationally engineering the Cu-doped Pr_(2)niO_(4+δ)materials and analysing their electrode behaviour for reversible protonic ceramic cells operating in both PCFC and PCEC *** oxides of Pr_(2)ni_(1-x)CuxO_(4+δ)(x=0,0.1,0.2 and 0.3)were synthesised using the citrate-nitrate *** obtained materials were characterised considering their crystalline structures,as well as thermal,thermomechanical and electrotransport properties.A special interest was focused on the quality of an electrode/electrolyte interface governing the electrochemical performance of the cells *** is shown that a copper doping of x=0.2 has a positive impact on the thermomechanical compatibility of the Ba(Ce,Zr)O_(3)-based electrolytes,providing a better adhesion to these electrolytes at low-temperature sintering and resulting in a decrease of the polarisation resistance of the air electrodes.A reversible protonic ceramic cell demonstrates a power density of~340 m W cm^(-2) and a hydrogen output flux of~3.8 ml cm^(-2) min^(-1) at 750℃.The presented results propose modernised alkaline-earth-element-free and cobalt-free electrodes that can be successfully used in the electrochemical cells based on the-state-of-the-art proton-conducting electrolytes.

The Kamchatka Peninsula – situated in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" – has 29 active and over 400 extinct volcanoes. Since it is situated in the northeastern extremity of Russia, in subarctic climate,the volcanic landforms are overprinted by the 446 glaciers. This research focuses on the 1^(st) Mutnaya catchment which drains the southern slopes of two active volcanoes: Avachinsky and Koryaksky. Those volcanoes are a permanent threat for the cities of Petropavlovsk and Elizovo, which are the 2 of 3 cities of the peninsula. Hence, most of the studies carried out in the area dealt with the natural hazards and only few focus on landscape evolution. Thus, the purpose of this study was to elaborate a cartographic approach which integrates classic geomorphology with state of the art GIS and remote sensing techniques. As result,different landforms and related processes have been analysed and included in the first general geomorphologic map of the 1^(st) Mutnaya catchment.

BACKGROUnD Arthrodesis is the surgical fusion of a diseased joint for the purposes of obtaining pain relief and *** have been numerous fixation devices described in literature for foot and ankle arthrodesis,each with their own benefits and *** To review the use of intraosseous devices in foot and ankle *** There were 9 papers included in the review(6 clinical and 3 experimental studies)all evaluating arthrodesis in the foot and ankle using the IOFIX device(Extremity Medical™,Parsippany,nJ,United States).Outcome scores,union rates,as well as complications were *** IOFIX appears to be safe and effective in achieving arthrodesis of the 1st metatarsophalangeal,and talonavicular joints with early *** comparison to plate/screw constructs there were fewer soft tissue complications and issues of metalwork *** and biomechanical studies on the use of intramedullary fixation for fusion of the tarsometatarsal and ankle joint showed decreased load to failure,cycles to failure and stiffness in comparison to traditional fusion methods using plates and screws,however IOFIX devices produced higher compressive forces at the *** We describe the reasons for which this biomechanical behavior of the intraosseous fixation may be favorable,until prospective and comparative studies with largersample size and longer follow-up confirm the effectiveness and limitations of the method.

Recent ionospheric observations report anomalous total electron content (TEC) deviations prior strong earthquakes. We discuss common fetures of the pre-earthquake TEC disturbances on the basis of statistics covering 50 strong seismic events during 2005-2006. The F2-layer ionospheric plasma drift under action of the electric fields of seismic origin is proposed as the main reason of producing TEC anomalies. The origin of such electric fields is discussed in terms of the lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling system. This theory is supported by numerical simulations using global Upper Atmosphere Model (UAM). UAM calculations show that the vertical electric current with the density of about 20 - 40 nA/m2 flowing between the Earth and ionosphere over an area of about 200 by 2000 km is required to produce the TEC disturbances with the amplitude of about 30% - 50% relatively to the non-disturbed conditions. Ionosphere responses on the variations of the latitudinal position, direction and configuration of the vertical electric currents have been investigated. We show that not only the vertical component of the ionospheric plasma drift but also horizontal components play an important role in producing pre-earthquake TEC disturbances.

The details of ternary fluoride crystallization in the system naF-CaF2-AlF3 have been specified. The phases naCaAlF6, na2Ca3Al2F14 and naAlF4 have been obtained by high-temperature synthesis. Their thermal transformations have been studied using high-temperature X-ray diffraction. The occurring transformations can be considered in a quasibinary system CaF2-naAlF4, where at T = 745°C - 750°C invariant equilibrium is established with the phases CaF2-naCaAlF6-na2Ca3Al2F14-(naAlF4). The compounds naCaAlF6 and na2Ca3Al2F14 are stable in different temperature ranges. The phase naCaAlF6 was fixed by rapid quenching from the melt. It decomposes at heating before 640°C yielding na2Ca3Al2F14 and naAlF4. Direct and inverse transformations between naCaAlF6 and na2Ca3Al2F14 occur in the bulk samples of the electrolyte. A thermal treatment procedure was proposed for the solid electrolyte sample to get a sample corresponding to the composition of the melt and providing high phase crystallinity for the purposes of quantitative X-ray phase diffraction analysis.
