Population structures and spatial patterns of two unpalatable Arisaema species(Araceae) with and without clonal reproduction in a riparian forest intensively grazed by Sika deer

General decline of understory cover can result from increased abundance of and foraging pressure by *** population size and degree of aggregation can increase for unpalatable understory plants that escape foraging *** reproduction can enable unpalatable plant species to increase their population sizes while trending toward spatially aggregated ***,the details of the relationship between clonal reproduction in unpalatable plants and their dynamics under intensive deer herbivory are not *** compared the population structures and spatial patterns of two coexisting unpalatable plant species,Arisaema ovale(with clonal reproduction)and ***(without clonal reproduction)in a riparian forest intensively grazed by Sika deer,and examined the null hypothesis that the extent of spatial aggregation and local population size would not differ between the clonal and non-clonal Arisaema *** a 0.36-ha plot,*** had a larger population size(1087 individuals)with a higher abundance ratio of small plants(p<0.01)than ***(84 individuals).Analyses of spatial point processes showed that both populations were spatially aggregated(p<0.05).The spatial aggregation of ***,however,became weaker than that of ***,when we excluded one dense patch originating from irregular seed *** results,excluding the aggregated distribution observed in ***,suggested a substantial contribution of clonal reproduction to the expansion of the local *** population following intensive grazing by Sika deer.

Skeletal muscle generated from induced pluripotent stem cells-induction and application

Human induced pluripotent stem cells(hiPS cells or hiPSCs) can be derived from cells of patients with severe muscle disease. If skeletal muscle induced from patientiPSCs shows disease-specific phenotypes, it can be useful for studying the disease pathogenesis and for drug development. On the other hand, human iPSCs from healthy donors or hereditary muscle diseaseiPSCs whose genomes are edited to express normal protein are expected to be a cell source for cell therapy. Several protocols for the derivation of skeletal muscle from human iPSCs have been reported to allow the development of efficient treatments for devastating muscle diseases. In 2017, the focus of research is shifting to another stage:(1) the establishment of mature myofibers that are suitable for study of the pathogenesis of muscle disease;(2) setting up a highthroughput drug screening system; and(3) the preparation of highly regenerative, non-oncogenic cells in large quantities for cell transplantation, etc.

We review recent our results in the fundamental study of surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） with emphasis on experiments that attempted to identify the enhancement and blinking mechanism using single Ag nanoparticle dimers attached to dye molecules. These results are quantitatively discussed in the framework of electromagnetic mechanism. We also review recent our results in basic SERS applications for biological sensing regarding detections of cell surface molecules and distinction of disease marker molecules under single cell and single molecule level.

Objective Shock heart syndrome(SHS)is associated with lethal arrhythmias(ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation,VT/VF).We investigated whether liposome-encapsulated human hemoglobin vesicles(HbVs)has comparable persistent efficacy to washed red blood cells(wRBCs)for improving arrhythmogenesis in the subacute to chronic phase of *** Optical mapping analysis(OMP),electrophysiological study(EPS),and pathological examinations were performed on blood samples from Sprague-Dawley rats following induction of hemorrhagic *** hemorrhagic shock,the rats were immediately resuscitated by transfusing 5%albumin(ALB),HbV,or *** rats survived for 1 *** and EPS were performed on Langendorff-perfused *** arrhythmias and heart rate variability(HRV)were evaluated using awake 24-h telemetry,cardiac function by echocardiography,and pathological examination of *** OMP showed significantly impaired action potential duration dispersion(APDd)in the left ventricle(LV)in the ALB group whereas APDd was substantially preserved in the HbV and wRBCs *** VT/VF was easily provoked by EPS in the ALB *** VT/VF was induced in the HbV and wRBCs ***,spontaneous arrhythmias,and cardiac function were preserved in the HbV and wRBCs *** showed myocardial cell damage and Connexin43 degradation in the ALB group,all of which were attenuated in the HbV and wRBCs *** LV remodeling after hemorrhagic shock caused VT/VF in the presence of impaired *** to wRBCs,HbV persistently prevented VT/VF by inhibiting persistent electrical remodeling,preserving myocardial structures,and ameliorating arrhythmogenic modifying factors in the subacute to chronic phase of hemorrhagic shock-induced SHS.

Current status and challenges in sentinel node navigation surgery for early gastric cancer

As an optimal surgical procedure to accurately evaluate lymph node(LN)metastasis during surgery with minimal surgical resection,we have been developing sentinel node(SN)biopsy for early gastric cancer since the *** institutions from the Japanese Society of Sentinel Node Navigation Surgery(SNNS),including Keio University Hospital,conducted a multicenter prospective trial to validate the SN concept using the dual-tracer method with blue dye and a *** to the results,397 patients were included in the final analysis,and the overall accuracy in detecting LN metastasis using SN biopsy was 99%(383 of 387).Based on the validation study,we are targeting cT1N0 with a primary tumor of≤4 cm in diameter as an indication for SN biopsy for gastric *** are currently running a multicenter nonrandomized phaseⅢtrial to assess the safety and efficacy of SN navigation *** Korean group has reported the result of a multicenter randomized phaseⅢ*** meticulous gastric cancer in the remnant stomach was rescued by subsequent gastrectomy,the disease-specific survival was comparable between the two techniques,implying that SN navigation surgery can be an alternative to standard *** the development of SN biopsy procedure and treatment modalities,the application of SN biopsy will be expanded to achieve an individualized minimally invasive surgery.

Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma with liver metastasis of rectal cancer

Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma is a particularly rare tumor with a poor prognosis. Curative resection is currently the only effective treatment, and the efficacy of chemotherapy is unclear. This represents the first case report of a patient with primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma co-existing with metastatic liver carcinoma. We present a 59-year-old man who was diagnosed preoperatively with rectal cancer with multiple liver metastases. He underwent a curative hepatectomy after a series of chemotherapy regimens with modified FOLFOX6 consisting of 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and oxaliplatin plus bevacizumab, FOLFIRI consisting of 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and irinotecan plus bevacizumab, and irinotecan plus cetuximab. One of the liver tumors showed a different response to chemotherapy and was diag-nosed as a leiomyosarcoma following histopathological examination. This case suggests that irinotecan has the potential to inhibit the growth of hepatic leiomyosarcomas. The possibility of comorbid different histological types of tumors should be suspected when considering the treatment of multiple liver tumors.

Investigation on Retention and Release Behaviors of Hydrogen and Helium in Vanadium Alloy

Vanadium alloy is proposed as an attractive candidate for first wall and blanket structural material of fusion reactors. The retention and release behaviors of hydrogen and helium in vanadium alloy may be an important issue. In the present work, 1.7 keV deuterium and 5 keV helium ions are respectively implanted into V-4Cr-4Ti and V-4Ti at room temperature. The retention and release of deuterium and helium are measured with thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). When the helium ion fluence is larger than 3 × 1017 He/cm2, the retained helium saturates with a value of approximately 2.5 ×1017 He/cm2. However, when the ion fluence is 1×1019 D/cm2, the hydrogen saturation in vanadium alloy does not take place. Experimental results indicates that hydrogen and helium retention in vanadium alloy may lead to serious problems and special attention should be paid when it is applied to fusion reactors.
