The material identification is a pressing requirement for the sensitive security applications. Dual-energy X-ray computer tomography (DXCT) has been investigated for material identification in the medical and security fields. It requires two tomographic images at sufficiently different energies. To discriminate dangerous materials of light elements such as plastic bombs in luggage, it is needed to measure accurately with several tens of kilo electron volts where such materials exhibit significant spectral differences. However, CT images in that energy region often include artifacts from beam hardening. To reduce these artifacts, a novel reconstruction method has been investigated. It is an extension of the Al-gebraic Reconstruction Technique and Total Variation (ART-TV) method that reduces the artifacts in a lower-energy CT image by referencing it to an image obtained at higher energy. The CT image of a titanium sample was recon-structed using this method in order to demonstrate the artifact reduction capability.

One of the issues in the aluminum-alloy die casting industry is the space occurring inside the casting, and the improvement of the verification technology is expected. The purpose of this research is to seal holes inside the aluminum metal by resin and verify them by photon-counting X-ray computed tomography (CT) using an energy-discrimination 64-channel cadmium-telluride (CdTe) line detector. Moreover, it is important to estimate the image of the effective atomic number and the electronic density by the energy mapping of the attenuation coefficient utilizing photon-counting X-ray CTto distinguish both the aluminum metal and the resin filler in the aluminum hole. As a result, the energy discrimination of the resin filler in the space of aluminum casting has been attained. We could observe the atomic number image utilizing dual-energyX-ray CTmethod with the 64-channel CdTe photon-counting detector.

Finite Element Analysis of Coronal Shear Fractures of the Femoral Neck: Displacement of the Femoral Head and Effect of Osteosynthetic Implants

Coronal shear fractures of the femoral neck (CSFF) are the most challenging to treat among proximal femur fractures, directly affecting the life expectancy of patients with osteoporosis. However, an adequate osteosynthesis method has not been elucidated yet. This study investigated the displacement direction of the femoral head fragment and its effect on the bone using finite element method. A finite element model for CSFF was developed from CT image data of a patient with osteoporosis using Mechanical Finder (ver. 11). Subsequently, finite element analyses were performed on six osteosynthesis models under maximum load applied during walking. The compressive stresses, tensile stresses, and compressive strains of each model were examined. The results suggested that the compressive and tensile stress distributions were concentrated on the anterior side of the femoral neck. Compressive strain distribution in the femoral head and neck was concentrated in four areas: at the tip of the blade or lag screw, the anteroinferior side of the blade or lag screw near the fracture site, and the upper right and lower left near the junction of the blade or lag screw and nail. Thus, the distribution of both these stresses revealed that the femoral head fragment was prone to anterior and inferior displacement. Distribution of compressive strains revealed the direction of the stress exerted by the osteosynthetic implant on the bone. The same results were observed in all osteosynthetic implants;thus, the findings could lay the foundation for developing methods for placing osteosynthetic implants less prone to displacement and the osteosynthetic implants themselves. In particular, the study provides insight into the optimal treatment of CSFF.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is widely known in our society. The symptoms of PTSD are particularly believed to occur predominantly in children. We believe that Yogo teachers, who play a role in maintaining and promoting the health of children, are expected to provide appropriate support for children with a tendency for PTSD. In this study, we investigated the tendency for PTSD in students at University, as well as self-esteem related to depression and anxiety. Furthermore, we clarified the relationship between PTSD and self-esteem and examined the support provided by Yogo teachers. As a result, it was found that the higher the tendency for PTSD, the lower the self-esteem. We believe that the onset of PTSD causes a decline in memory ability and attentional function, which interferes with one’s life and leads to self-denial, resulting in a decline in self-esteem among those with a high tendency for PTSD. These results suggest that Yogo teachers should provide support to prevent the onset of PTSD in child students due to accidents, incidents, natural disasters, etc., as well as support to prevent the decline in self-esteem associated with the onset of PTSD.

Fabrication of Polarization Control Devices Using Metal Grating Structures

A polarization control device was developed using a plasmonic metasurface with the aim of achieving the desired polarization state. In this study, the Ag metal grating structure was fabricated as a plasmonic metasurface by electron beam lithography and a lift-off process. The phase difference of the fabricated sample was 21.0°. This value is almost consistent with the simulation (24.0°). Then, the transmission and phase difference is dependent on the structural parameter. Because of the propagation of surface plasmon polariton at the interface between Ag and SiO2 or Ag and air, it is believed that the transmittance and the phase difference for TM polarized light can be controlled by the structural parameters. By plotting on the Poincaré sphere after calculating the S-parameter by simulation, it is clear that the arbitrary polarization status can be controlled by the structural parameter.

＜正＞ High-quality crystals of large polycyclic aromatic molecules such as tetracene and pentacene are often used as charge transport layers of organic electronic devices. Such polycyclic aromatic molecules due to their large πsystems have the ability to accept an excess electron in a lowest unoccupied molecular orbital （LUMO）. Accurate experimental adiabatic electron affinity （EAa） values of those molecules are important for the energetics of electron transport processes and for comparison with theoretical EAa. In this work, we for the first time studied the electronic properties of tetracene anion and its homogenous clusters using anion photoelectron spectroscopy with a magnetic bottle photoelectron spectrometer. Tetracene anion and its homogeneous clusters were produced by using a high-pressure, high-temperature Even-Lavie pulsed valve combined with electron source. For tetracene anion, the most dominant peak was observed at 1.03±0.04 eV, which is attributed to the origin （vibrationless） transition from the anion ground state to the neutral one. This value corresponds to the EAa of isolated tetracene molecule and agrees well with that calculated using the method of density functional theory. This result shows that the excess electron occupies the LUMO of tetracene molecule. The excess electron states and energetics of the tetracene cluster anions will be also discussed in detail on the basis of the results of anion photoelectron spectroscopy.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is one of the severe complications of radiation, anticancer chemotherapy and immunosuppressive agents for transplantation. Autopsy of a case of rapidly progressive, uncontrollable severe ascites, without apparent signs of preceding drug toxicity, revealed a tensely enlarged liver and spleen, and 3000 ml of ascites attributed to secondary portal hypertension. Histopathological analysis disclosed sinusoidal endothelial damage and fibrous expansion from central veins. All the foregoing indicated hepatic SOS that needs to be included in the differential diagnosis of progressive ascites in patients without an apparent history of malignancy or transplantation.
