Two-dimensional(2D)crystals are attracting growing interest in various research fields such as engineering,physics,chemistry,pharmacy,and biology owing to their low dimensionality and dramatic change of properties compared to the bulk counter *** the various techniques used to manufacture 2D crystals,mechanical exfoliation has been essential to practical applications and fundamental ***,mechanically exfoliated crystals on substrates contain relatively thick flakes that must be found and removed manually,limiting high-throughput manufacturing of atomic 2D crystals and van der Waals ***,we present a deep-learning-based method to segment and identify the thickness of atomic layer flakes from optical microscopy *** carefully designing a neural network based on U-Net,we found that our neural network based on Unet trained only with the data based on realistically small number of images successfully distinguish monolayer and bilayer moS2 and graphene with a success rate of 70–80%,which is a practical value in the first screening process for choosing monolayer and bilayer flakes of all flakes on substrates without human *** remarkable results highlight the possibility that a large fraction of manual laboratory work can be replaced by AI-based systems,boosting productivity.

Laser-assisted direct roller imprinting of large-area microstructured optical surfaces

In this study,a high-throughput fabrication method called laser-assisted direct roller imprinting(LADRI)was developed to lower the cost of nanoimprinting large-area polymer films and to address problems associated with nanoimprinting,namely,microstructural damage and precision in flatness of entire *** LADRI,the laser directly heats the microstructured surface of the roller mold,which heats and melts the surface of a polymethyl methacrylate(PmmA)film to replicate the microstructures on the mold *** this study,the effects of laser power density,scanning speed,size of the microstructures,and contact pressure on the replication speed were investigated *** replication speed increased as the power and scanning speed ***,because the film required heating until it filled the entire depth of the microstructure,an appropriate replication speed was *** result was supported by simulation of the temperature distribution inside the mold and the PmmA using transient heat conduction *** demonstrate the applications of LADRI,two different optical surfaces were replicated:an antireflection(AR)structure with conical structures sized several hundred nanometers and a lightextraction structure with a microlens array(mLA)comprising 10μm lenses,for display and illumination,*** replication degree of the mLA was governed by the contact *** flow simulation indicated that the heat conduction and flow speeds of the melted PmmA surface were comparable within several tens of *** addition,the reflectivity of the AR structure decreased from 4 to 0.5%,and the light intensity of the light-extraction structure increased by a factor of 1.47.

Tuberculous otitis media(TOm) is a rare manifestation caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis with low incidence rates among extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases. Diagnosis is often delayed because of the presence of several clinical manifestations and the high prevalence of secondary bacterial infections. Few reports have attributed secondary bacterial infections in patients with TOm to commensal Neisseria. Thus, understanding the pathogenic mechanisms and clinical features of commensal Neisseria is important, considering its recent presentation as an infection-causing pathogen. Neisseria mucosa is a commensal inhabitant in humans and is generally considered non-pathogenic but can cause infection in rare cases. Here, we report an atypical secondary infection caused by Neisseria mucosa in an 81-year-old woman with TOm being treated for pulmonary tuberculosis. Direct purulent otorrhea smear microscopy revealed no acid-fast bacilli using Ziehl-Neelsen staining, whereas the phagocytosis of gram-negative cocci by white blood cells was confirmed using Gram staining. Otorrhea culture revealed the growth of N. mucosa. Subsequently, m. tuberculosis infection in the otorrhea was identified using a culture-based method. Vigilance is critical for the early detection of TOm to prevent further complications. This report raises awareness regarding TOm and provides insight into the pathogenicity of N. mucosa in otitis media.

Behavior of Vaneless Diffuser Stall in a Centrifugal Compressor

The rotating stall in a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser was investigated both experimentally and numerically with focus on the effect of the internal flow field within the impeller on the diffuser *** numerical analysis,the boundary layer separation at the impeller outlet was found to play an important role in the expansion and rotation processes of the diffuser *** particular,the expanded boundary layer separation near the hub side at the outlet of the main blade(m.B.)suction surface passage was considered to be the main cause of the expansion and rotation processes.A longitudinal vortex existed at the throat of the ***,and the mass flow rate in the *** was significantly reduced by the blockage *** addition,the longitudinal vortex induced the rolling up flow near the hub side at the impeller ***,the boundary layer separation expanded.

The term 'Satoyama' refers to traditional and unique secondary forests in Japan that occupy intermediate zones between villages ('sato') and hills or mountains ('yama'). Satoyama landscapes help sustain ecosystem services and the diversity of secondary natural environments. As Japan relies more heavily on foreign timber imports, the traditional role of Satoyama in providing forest products has diminished, and this has led to their abandonment and poor management. The chemical behavior of cations, anions, and dissolved organic matter in throughfall and stemflow from one such threatened Satoyama system in central Japan was investigated. From autumn to winter, the atmospheric deposition of sulfates and nitrates was 2.5–6.0 times higher compared to the amounts in summer due to the intrusion of air masses from the Asian continent. The dissolved organic matter in the throughfall and stemflow was composed mainly of humic substances and protein derivatives. The deposition fluxes of dissolved organic carbon from throughfall (7.31–10.1 g m^(−2) a^(−1)) and stemflow (1.79–3.84 g m^(−2) a^(−1)) in this study were within ranges seen in temperate forests in previous studies. The deposition flux of sulfates was low compared to that in other forest types because canopy interaction was lower, suggesting higher canopy openness than in primary forests. If a shift from a mixed species Satoyama forest to a conifer-dominated forest occurs after the mass mortality of oak, the deposition flux of dissolved organic carbon and K^(+) might decrease by 33% and 62%, respectively, while NO_(3)^(−) might increase by 20%. In the near future, the degradation of Satoyama landscapes might change the levels of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen loads, resulting in imbalances in river-ocean linkages affecting forested catchments and aquatic ecosystems in Japan.

Chain-Length-Dependent Hydrogen-Bonded Self-Assembly of Terminally Functionalized Discrete Polyketones

Here,we report the synthesis and the chain-lengthdependent self-assembling behaviors of discrete di-,tetra-,and hexaketones terminally functionalized with hydrogen-bonding carboxyl(C1,C2,and C3)and 3-acylaminopyridine groups(P1,P2,and P3).These polyketones were prepared by the coupling reactions of silylated analogues of 3,3-dimethylpentane-2,4-dione and t-butyl 2,2-dimethyl-3-oxobutanoate and the subsequent hydrolysis or amidation with ***-crystal Xray diffraction analysis revealed that C1 and C2 form helical assemblies in which the components are connected by the dimerization of terminal carboxyl groups,whereas the longer C3 showed infinite hydrogen-bonded chains mediated by 1,4-dioxane used as a crystallization ***-terminated P1 exhibited a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network owing to multiple NH…N(pyridine)hydrogen bonds in the solid state.P2 generated a double-helix-like fiber structure in the crystalline *** the pyridine-terminated polyketones P1−P3,only P2 showed gelation behavior in chloroform(100 mm concentration)at 25℃.The scanning electron microscopy measurement of xerogel P2 revealed the formation of rod-like structures with a thickness of approximately 0.5−3.5μ*** results demonstrate that the precise control of the polyketone chain length can significantly alter hydrogen-bonded self-assembly in the solid state and in solution even with the same terminal structures.

Is it possible to adopt the same oncological approach in urgent surgery for colon cancer?

Super-High Heat Flux Removal Using Sintered metal Porous media

Heat transfer experiments using various porous materials are performed to verify the possibility of extremely high heat flux removal (several dozens of mW/m2). The porous media introduced in this experiment are bronze particle-sintered ones and copper fibers-sintered ones that have high thermal conductivity, each of which can enhance the thermal diffusion in the porous material. From the heat transfer experiments using a non-transferred type of plasma arcjet as a high heat flux source, the steady heat removal of 66.0 mW/m2 is proved by using the bronze porous medium whose pore size and porosity are 100 μm and 0.38, respectively. Furthermore, as the result of evaluating the heat removal performance for various copper fiber porous media with the porosity from 0.5 to 0.7 and the fiber diameter from 30 to 90 μm, it is clarified that the maximum cooling performance exceeds 70.0 mW/m2 at the porosity of 0.7 and the fiber diameter of 90 μm, and that using the lower porosity material is useful for improving an evaporation rate in the porous media.
