BACKGROUND Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy(PTTM)is a rare condition in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC);to date,few cases have been *** hepatic dysfunction has been focused on the later stages of HCC,the management of symptoms in PTTM is important for supportive care of the *** the better understanding of PTTM in HCC,the information of our recent case and reported cases have been *** SUMMARY A patient with HCC exhibited acute and severe respiratory *** and computed tomography of the chest revealed the multiple metastatic tumors and a frosted glass–like shadow with no evidence of infectious *** diagnosed his condition as acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by the lung metastases and involvement of the pulmonary vessels by tumor *** of prednisolone to alleviate the diffuse alveolar damages including edematous changes of alveolar wall caused by the tumor cell infiltration and ischemia showed mild improvement in his symptoms and imaging *** autopsy showed the typical pattern of PTTM in the lung with multiple *** PTTM is caused by tumor thrombi in the arteries and thickening of the pulmonary arterial endothelium leading to the symptoms of dyspnea in terminal staged ***,supportive management of symptoms is necessary in the cases with PTTM and hence we believe that the information presented here is of great significance for the diagnosis and management of symptoms of PTTM with HCC.

Prompt treatment in tumor-associated encephalopathy may prolong survival. We describe a 69-year-old male patient who was presented with fulminant hepatic failure, secondary to small-cell lung carcinoma with rapidly progressing encephalopathy. Both symptoms remitted following chemotherapy, suggesting swift diagnosis and administration of chemotherapy to be effective in treatment of fulminant hepatic failure and encephalopathy.

Lysophosphatidic acid transactivates both c-Met and epidermal growth factor receptor, and induces cyclooxygenase-2 expression in human colon cancer LoVo cells

AIM： To examine whether lysophosphatidic acid （LPA） induces phosphorylation of c-Met and epidermal growth factor receptor （EGFR）, both of which have been proposed as prognostic markers of colorectal cancer, and whether LPA induces cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2） expression in human colon cancer cells. METHODS： Using a human colon cancer cell line, LoVo cells, we performed immunoprecipitation analysis, followed by Western blot analysis. We also examined whether LPA induced COX-2 expression, by Western blot analysis. RESULTS： Immunoprecipitation analysis revealed that 10 μmol/L LPA induced tyrosine phosphorylation of c-Met and EGFR in LoVo cells within a few minutes. We found that c-Met tyrosine phosphorylation induced by LPA was not attenuated by pertussis toxin or a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor, in marked contrast to the results for EGFR. In addition, 0.2-40 IJmol/L LPA induced COX-2 expression in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION： Our results suggest that LPA acts upstream of various receptor tyrosine kinases （RTKs） and COX-2, and thus may act as a potent stimulator of colorectal cancer. 2005 The WJG Press and Elsevier Inc. Flavin-Containing Monooxygenase (FMO) Protein Expression and Its Activity in Rat Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells

The aim of this study was to examine whether flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO) protein was expressed in cultured rat brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs), which constitute the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and whether N-oxide from the tertiary amine, d-chlorpheniramine, was formed by FMO in rat BMECs. BMECs were isolated and cultured from the brains of three-week-old male Wistar rats. The expression of FMO1, FMO2 and FMO5 proteins was confirmed in rat BMECs by western blotting analysis using polyclonal anti-FMO antibodies, but FMO3 and FMO4 proteins were not found in the rat BBB. Moreover, N-oxide of d-chlorpheniramine was formed in rat BMECs. The intrinsic clearance value for N-oxidation at pH 8.4 was higher than that at pH 7.4. Inhibition of N-oxide formation by methimazole was found to be the best model of competitive inhibition yielding an apparent Ki value of 0.53 μmol/L, suggesting that N-oxidation was catalyzed by FMOs in rat BMECs. Although FMO activity in rat BMECs was lower than that in SD rat normal hepatocytes (rtNHeps), we suggest that rat BMECs enzymes can convert substrates of exogenous origin for detoxification, indicating that BMECs are an important barrier for metabolic products besides hepatic cells.

Effect of double platinum agents, combination of miriplatintransarterial oily chemoembolization and cisplatinhepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy, in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: Report of two cases

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most common cancers and the third highest cause of cancerassociated mortality worldwide. The treatment of HCC is complicated by its variable biological behavior and the frequent coexistence of chronic liver disease, particularly cirrhosis. To date, multiple treatment modalities have been developed according to the stage of the tumor and the hepatic functional reserve, including transarterial treatments such as transarterial chemoembolization, transarterial oily chemoembolization(TOCE), and hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy(HAIC). We conducted a phase I and II study of the combination therapy with double platinum agents, miriplatin and cisplatin, and confirmed its safety and efficacy. Here, we describe two cases of unresectable HCC who were successfully treated by miriplatin-TOCE/cisplatin-HAIC combination therapy, resulting in complete responses with no significant adverse events. This report will provide that the combination therapy can be the therapeutic option for HCC patients in the advanced stage.

三种硫磺硫化体系和两种过氧化物硫化体系的丁腈胶胶料与镍片共同硫化,当所用的镍片化学镀镍后的存放时间在6 h之内时,硫化所得到的丁腈胶-镍片粘合体具有大约6 kN/m的剥离强力。镀镍后在空气中长期存放的镍片,在硫化过程中很难与丁腈胶胶料产生粘合。研究表明,这种粘合力的下降是由于镍片表面形成了过厚的氧化物膜。镀镍后立即使用的镍片,在有橡胶配合剂的情况下,很容易与丁腈胶发生反应,在丁腈胶-镍的界面上形成化学交联。不过,在空气中长时间存放的镍片由于表面所形成的氧化物膜起着阻挡层作用,因此不再能与丁腈胶胶料粘合。然而,当丁腈胶胶料中添加有TTMS(triazine trithiol monosodium)时,在空气中存放3个月以上,表面具有厚的氧化物膜的镍片却可以与各种丁腈胶胶料形成非常好的粘合。这是由于TTMS能有效地促进丁腈胶-镍界面化学交联键的形成。丁腈胶-镍粘合体具有很好的耐水、耐油和耐热性能。

Effects of Dietary Green Rooibos on Physical Endurance in Swimming Mice

Green rooibos made from unfermented rooibos leaves contains high amounts of aspalathin. Dietary green rooibos is expected to increase physical endurance and decrease physical fatigue, because aspalathin has antioxidant activity and stimulates glucose uptake in muscle tissue. The aim of this study was to validate the effects of green rooibos and aspalathin by using a swimming mouse model. Dietary green rooibos and aspalathin tended to increase swimming time in mice. This beneficial effect might be induced by increased glycogen accumulation in the liver and skeletal muscles.
