Modulatory effects of Bifidobacterium longum BB536 on defecation in elderly patients receiving enteral feeding

AIM:To investigate the effects of the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum BB536 on the health management of elderly patients receiving enteral ***:Two double-blind,placebo-controlled trials were performed with long-term inpatients receiving enteral tube feeding at Kitakyushu Hospital Group,Fukuoka,***536 was administered as BB536-L and BB536-H powders that contained approximately 2.5 × 10 10 and 5 × 10 10 cfu of BB536,*** the first trial,83 patients(age range:67-101 years) were randomized into 2 groups that received placebo(placebo group) or BB536-H(BB536 group) *** the second trial,123 patients(age range:65-102years) were randomized into 3 groups,and each group received placebo(placebo group),BB536-L(BB536-L group),or BB536-H(BB536-H group) *** patient received the study medication for 16 wk after 1 wk of *** samples were collected from each patient prior to and after the intervention during Trial *** observations included body temperature,occurrence of infection,frequency of defecation,and fecal ***:No significant changes were observed in the frequency of defecation for either treatment in Trial ***,a significant change was noted in the BB536-L group(P = 0.0439) in Trial 2 but not in the placebo or BB536-H *** analyses based on the frequency of defecation for each patient during the pre-observation period for both trials revealed significant increases in bowel movements in patients with a low frequency of defecation and significant decreases in the bowel movements of patients with a high frequency of defecation during the intervention period in the BB536 *** combination of Trials 1 and 2 data revealed a modulatory effect of BB536 ingestion on the changes in bowel *** increased bowel movements were observed in patients in the low frequency subgroup with significant intergroup differences(P < 0.01).Significantly decreased bowel movements wer

An intussusception due to colonic adenocarcinoma has sometimes been reported. However, to the best of our knowledge, reports of intussusception due to rectal adenocarcinoma are extremely rare. In this report, the case of a young man with rectal adenocarcinoma causing intussusception is described. A 24-year-old man visited a hospital complaining of abdominal pain, and an upper rectal cancer was diagnosed by colonoscopy. Computed tomography showed intussusception caused by a large tumor in the pelvis and absence of distant metastases. Locally advanced rectal cancer causing intussusception was diagnosed, and a low anterior resection was performed. Intraoperatively, repair of the invagination could not be accomplished easily; therefore, the repair was abandoned. Instead, the tumor was removed en bloc to avoid dissemination of the cancer. Histopathologically, the tumor was diagnosed as a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, pStage IIA. The patient has no evidence of recurrence at 10 mo after the operation.

Creep lives of high Cr ferritic heat resisting steel weldments decrease due to Type Ⅳ fracture, which occurs as a result of formation and growth of creep voids and cracks on grain boundaries in fine-grained heat affected zone (HAZ). Because boron is considered to suppress the coarsening of grain boundary precipitates and growth of creep voids, we have investigated the effect of boron addition on the creep properties of 9Cr steel weldments. Four kinds of 9Cr3WSCoVNb steels with boron content varying from 4.7×10-5 to 1.8×10-4 and with nitrogen as low as 2.0×10-5 were prepared. The steel plates were welded by gas tungsten arc welding and crept at 923K. It was found that the microstructures of HAZ were quite different from those of conventional high Cr steels such as P91 and P92, namely the fine-grained HAZ did not exist in the present steel weldments. Boron addition also has the effect to suppress coarsening of grain boundary carbides in HAZ during creep. As a result of these phenomena, the welded joints of present steels showed no Type Ⅳ fractures and much better creep lives than those of conventional steels.

Glycosylation of the Fc region of IgG has a profound impact on the safety and clinical efficacy of therapeutic antibodies. While the biantennary *** oligosaccharide attached to Asn297 of the Fc is essen- tial for antibody effector functions, fucose and outer-arm sugars attached to the core heptasaccharide that gen- erate structural heterogeneity （glycoforms） exhibit unique biological activities. Hence, efficient and quan- titative glycan analysis techniques have been increas- ingly important for the development and quality control of therapeutic antibodies, and g｜ycan profiles of the Fc are recognized as critical quality attributes. In the past decade our understanding of the influence of glycosy- lation on the structure/function of IgG-Fc has grown rapidly through X-ray crystallographic and nuclear magnetic resonance studies, which provides possibili- ties for the design of novel antibody therapeutics. Fur- thermore, the chemoenzymatic glycoengineering approach using endoglycosidase-based glycosyn- thases may facilitate the development of homogeneous IgG glycoforms with desirable functionality as next- generation therapeutic antibodies. Thus, the Fc glycans are fertile ground for the improvement of the safety,functionality, and efficacy of therapeutic IgG antibodies in the era of precision medicine.

OBJECTIVES： An animal experiment clarified that insertion of an orthodontic apparatus activated the trigeminal neurons of the medulla oblongata. Orthodontic tooth movement is known to be associated with the sympathetic nervous system and controlled by the nucleus of the hypothalamus. However, the transmission of both has not been demonstrated in humans. The purpose of this study were to examine the activated cerebral areas using brain functional magnetic resonance imaging（MRI）, when orthodontic tooth separators were inserted, and to confirm the possibility of the transmission route from the medulla oblongata to the ***： Two types of alternative orthodontic tooth separators（brass contact gauge and floss） were inserted into the right upper premolars of 10 healthy volunteers. Brain functional T2＊-weighted images and anatomical T1-weighted images were ***： The blood oxygenation level dependent（BOLD） signals following insertion of a brass contact gauge and floss significantly increased in the somatosensory association cortex and hypothalamic ***： Our findings suggest the possibility of a transmission route from the medulla oblongata to the hypothalamus.

New Neumerical Method to Calculate Time-Dependent Quantum Properties in Finite Temperature Based on the Heisenberg Equation of Motion

For the purpose of computer calculation to evaluate time-dependent quantum properties in finite temperature, we propose new numerical method expressed in the forms of simultaneous differential equations. At first we derive the equation of motion in finite temperature, which is found to be same expression as Heisenberg equation of motion except for the c-number. Based on this equation, we construct numerical method to estimate time-dependent physical properties in finite temperature precisely without using analytical procedures such as Keldysh formalism. Since our approach is so simple and is based on the simultaneous differential equations including no terms related to self-energies, computer programming can be easily performed. It is possible to estimate exact time-dependent physical properties, providing that Hamiltonian of the system is taken to be a one-electron picture. Furthermore, we refer to the application to the many body problem and it is numerically possible to calculate physical properties using Hartree Fock approximation. Our numerical method can be applied to the case even when perturbative Hamiltonians are newly introduced or Hamiltonian shows complex time-dependent behavior. In this article, at first, we derive the equation of motion in finite temperature. Secondly, for the purpose of verification and of exhibiting the usefulness, we show the derivation of gap equation of superconductivity and of sum rule of electrical conductivity and the application to the many body problem. Finally we apply this method to these two cases: the first case is most simplified resonance charge transfer neutralization of an ion and the second is the same process but impurity potential is newly introduced as perturbative Hamiltonian. Through both cases, it is found that neutralization process is not so sensitive to temperature, however, impurity potential as small as 10 meV strongly influences the neutralization of ion.

The Influence of the Psychological Distance between Family Members on Personality Formation

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the family relationships recognized by children and mental health after becoming adults, with emphasis on the forms of recognition from the viewpoint of children. It consisted of an anonymous questionnaire survey using a multiple-choice and fill-in-the-answer format among 451 university students as the subjects. The questionnaire included an investigation into the gender, family relationship from the higher grades of elementary school to secondary school, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and the tendency towards depression and anxiety of the subjects. The results of this study suggested that the more balanced the psychological distance between family members, the lower the score showing a tendency towards anxiety, and vice versa. The results also suggested that the more balanced the psychological distance between family members, the lower the score showing a tendency towards depression, and vice versa. Therefore, it is assumed that the balance of the psychological distance between each member has a stronger impact on the tendency towards anxiety and depression than the length of the psychological distance. In terms of gender, there were no differences in self-esteem, self-efficacy, or the tendency of depression and anxiety. In conclusion, this study partially revealed how the family relationships recognized by children impact personality formation in the process of becoming adults.

Background:Although radiofrequency ablation(RFA)is a minimally invasive treatment for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),it remains unclear whether RFA achieves favorable outcomes in pa-tients aged≥80 *** study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of RFA for HCC in patients aged≥80 ***:A total of 512 naïve patients with HCC who had undergone RFA from January 2001 to December 2016 were *** were categorized into the≥80-year-old group and the control group(aged<80 years).The primary endpoint was overall survival(OS),and the secondary endpoints were recurrence-free survival,complications associated with RFA,and cause of *** score matching was performed to adjust for patients’sex,liver function,tumor number,tumor diameter,and hepatitis C virus ***,the data of 68 patients in the≥80-year-old group and 68 in the control group were analyzed;their baseline characteristics,primary endpoint,and secondary endpoints were ***:There were significant differences in the alanine aminotransferase level and prothrombin time between the *** cumulative OS rate was not significantly different between the groups(P=0.83):98.5%,87.9%,and 50.5%in the≥80-year-old group and 94.1%,72.8%,and 49.3%in the control group at 1,3,and 5 years,***≥80 years was not significantly associated with OS in multivariate ***-related death occurred in 17 patients in the≥80 year-old group and in 16 patients in the control group(P=1.00).Conclusions:RFA is safe and effective for the treatment of patients with HCC aged≥80 years.
