Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to propose a fault-tolerant technology for increasing the durability of application programs when evolutionary computation is performed by fast parallel processing on many-core processors such as graphics processing units(GPUs)and multi-core processors(MCPs).Design/methodology/approach–For distributed genetic algorithm(GA)models,the paper proposes a method where an island’s ID number is added to the header of data transferred by this island for use in fault ***–The paper has shown that the processing time of the proposed idea is practically negligible in applications and also shown that an optimal solution can be obtained even with a single stuck-at fault or a transient fault,and that increasing the number of parallel threads makes the system less susceptible to ***/value–The study described in this paper is a new approach to increase the sustainability of application program using distributed GA on GPUs and MCPs.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil plays an important role in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. We investigated neutrophil infiltration in liver tissue, Kupffer cells' role in neutrophil accumulation, and apoptosis and regeneration of hepatocytes in liver ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS: Vascular microclamps were placed across the pedicles of the median and left lateral lobes for 90 minutes after 30% hepatectomy with the resection of caudate, right lateral and quadrate lobes and papillary process. Gadolinium chloride (GdCl3) was used to destroy Kupffer cells. Neutrophil activity was inhibited with Urge-8, a monoclonal antibody against neutrophil produced in our laboratory. GdCl3 (10 mg/kg) and Urge-8 (50 mg/kg) were given intravenously in respective groups. Ischemia control, GdCl3 and Urge-8 groups were compared. RESULTS: Following hepatic reperfusion, serum interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels and hepatic neutrophil counts peaked at 3 hours, and peak concentrations of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) occurred at 6 hours. Animals of the control group showed increases in neutrophil infiltration in liver tissue, liver enzyme levels, and apoptosis index of hepatocytes and decreases in overall survival rate and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression of hepatocytes. The survival rates and PCNA proportion of hepatocytes were higher and the levels of hepatic neutrophil infiltration, liver enzymes, and hepatocyte apoptosis after reperfusion were lower in the GdCl3 and Urge-8 groups than those in the ischemia control group. CONCLUSIONS: Blockades of Kupffer cells' activity and neutrophil infiltration by GdCl3 and Urge-8 eliminate neutrophil-mediated hepatic injury and enhance subsequent hepatic regeneration during liver ischemiareperfusion.

AIM:To examine whether a dose-up to 900 mg of ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA) decreases transaminases in hepatitis C ***:From January to December 2007,patients with chronic hepatitis C or compensated liver cirrhosis with hepatitis C virus(HCV)(43-80 years old) showing positive serum HCV-RNA who had already taken 600 mg/d of UDCA were recruited into this *** parameters were examined at 4,8 and 24 wk after increasing the dose of oral UDCA from 600 to 900 mg/***:Serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase(GGT) levels were signifi cantly decreased following the administration of 900 mg/d as compared to 600 mg/*** decrease in ALT from immediately before the dose-up of UDCA to 8 wk after the dose-up was 14.3 IU/L,while that for AST was 10.5 IU/L and for GGT was 9.8 IU/*** count tended to increase after the dose-up of UDCA,although it did not show a statistically signifi cant level(P=0.05).Minor adverse events were observed in 3 cases,although no drop-outs from the study ***:Oral administration of 900 mg/d of UDCA was more effective than 600 mg/d for reducing ALT,AST,and GGT levels in patients with HCV-related chronic liver disease.

Nestling rejection is a rare type of host defense against brood parasitism compared with egg ***,host defenses at both egg and nestling stages could be based on similar underlying discrimination mechanisms but,due to the rarity of nestling rejector hosts,few studies have actually tested this *** investigated egg and nestling discrimination by the fan-tailed gerygone Gerygone flavolateralis,a host that seemingly accepts nonmimetic eggs of its parasite,the shining bronze-cuckoo Chalcites lucidus,but ejects mimetic parasite *** introduced artificial eggs or nestlings and foreign gerygone nestlings in gerygone nests and compared begging calls of parasite and host *** found that the gerygone ejected artificial eggs only if their size was smaller than the parasite or host *** of artificial nestlings did not depend on whether their color matched that of the *** frequency of ejection increased during the course of the breeding season mirroring the increase in ejection frequency of parasite nestlings by the ***-fostered gerygone nestlings were frequently ejected when lacking natal down and when introduced in the nest before hatching of the foster brood,but only occasionally when they did not match the color of the foster *** calls differed significantly between parasite and host nestlings throughout the nestling *** results suggest that the fan-tailed gerygone accepts eggs within the size range of gerygone and cuckoo eggs and that nestling discrimination is based on auditory and visual cues other than skin *** highlights the importance of using a combined approach to study discrimination mechanisms of hosts.

Huge mucinous borderline ovarian cystadenoma in a premenarchal girl

Epithelial ovarian tumors are common in adult women, but rare in children. Especially mucinous ovarian cystadenoma is extremely rare, with only 16 cases in premenarchal girls reported to date. We present a case of 12-year-old premenarchal girl with symptoms of lower abdominal distension. CT showed a large multilocular tumor spreading throughout the entire abdominal cavity from the right upper quadrant to the pelvic cavity. The tumor was brought out little by little with aspiration of the fluid contents with a small incision. The tumor was found to originate from the left ovary, and oophorectomy was performed. The tumor measured 26 × 18 cm and weighed 5860 g. Histological diagnosis was mucinous ovarian cystadenoma with borderline malignancy. No evidence of recurrence had been seen as of 2 years postoperatively. In the review of premenarchal mucinous borderline ovarian cystadenoma, all cases were stage I and underwent salpingo-oophorectomy or oophorectomy. Those patients were alive without recurrence. Al-though mucinous borderline ovarian cystadenoma was characterized as malignancy, premenarchal cases showed favorable outcomes and salpingo-oohprectomy or oophorectomy appears appropriate.

＜正＞ The Black-crowned Night Heron, Nycticorax nycticorax, forages both by day and by night in the breeding season, even though it is basically nocturnal. Its main foraging habitat in Japan is paddy field, but it hunts along rivers too, especially on small dams and fishways. The hospital environment in Japan has changed drastically lately. Its unpredictability has increased the need for hospitals to select management strategies to clarify their course. However, research on Japanese hospitals’ management strategies has only recently begun with too few studies in this area. Hence, this study clarifies the management strategies of Japanese private hospitals. It explores the hospital characteristics that affect strategy selection. A questionnaire was mailed to 5682 private medical institutions in 2013, and 459 responses with no missing data were used for analysis. Factor analysis yielded four factors: “bed conversion and downsizing (Factor 1),” “diversification of medical and nursing care (Factor 2),” “expansion in business scale (Factor 3),” and “expansion of income from non-insured medical care (Factor 4)”. Logistic regression analysis revealed that Year Founded (before 1965), Hospital Location (municipalities with populations smaller than 100,000), Hospital Type (psychiatric hospitals and mixed-care hospital), and Hospital Income and Expenditure (deficit) had significant positive impacts on the choice of Factor 1. For Factor 2, Hospital Type (sanatorium ward and mixed-care hospitals) and Hospital Income and Expenditure (constant surplus) had positive impacts. For Factor 3, Hospital Type (general hospital) and Bed Counts (more than 200) had positive impacts. For Factor4, Hospital Type (general hospital) had positive impacts. In other words, older hospitals, hospitals in rural areas, psychiatric hospitals, mixed-care hospitals, and hospitals with deficits tended to choose bed conversion and downsizing. Sanatorium ward hospitals, mixed-care hospitals, and hospitals with a constant surplus tended to choose diversification of medical and nursing care. Evaluation of prognostic factors and scoring system in colonic perforation

AIM: To study the significance of scoring systems assessing severity and prognostic factors in patients with colonic perforation. METHODS: A total of 26 patients (9 men, 17 women; mean age 72.7 ± 11.6 years) underwent emergency operation for colorectal perforation in our institution between 1993 and 2005. Several clinical factors were measured preoperatively and 24 h postoperatively. Acute physiology and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ (APACHE Ⅱ), Mannheim peritonitis index (MPI) and peritonitis index of Altona (PIA Ⅱ) scores were calculated preoperatively. RESULTS: Overall postoperative mortality rate was 23.1% (6 patients). Compared with survivors, non- survivors displayed low blood pressure, low serum protein and high serum creatinine preoperatively, and low blood pressure, low white blood cell count, low pH, low PaO2/FiO2, and high serum creatinine postoperatively. APACHE Ⅱ score was significantly lower in survivors than in non-survivors (10.4 ± 3.84 vs 19.3 ± 2.87, P = 0.00003). Non-survivors tended to display high MPI score and low PIA Ⅱ score, but no signif icant difference was identif ied. CONCLUSION: Pre- and postoperative blood pressure and serum creatinine level appear related to prognosis of colonic perforation. APACHE Ⅱ score is most associated with prognosis and scores ≥ 20 are associated with signif icantly increased mortality rate.
