Plasma depletions lasting into daytime during the recovery phase of a geomagnetic storm in May 2017:Analysis and simulation of GPS total electron content observations

This paper reports that plasma density depletions appearing at middle latitudes near sunrise survived until afternoon on 29 May 2017 during the recovery phase of a geomagnetic *** analyzing GPS data collected in Japan,we investigate temporal variations in the horizontal two-dimensional distribution of total electron content(TEC)during the geomagnetic *** SYM-H index reached-142 n T around 08 UT on 28 May *** depletions extending up to approximately 38°N along the meridional direction appeared over Japan around 05 LT(LT=UT+9 hours)on 29 May 2017,when TEC rapidly increased at sunrise due to the solar extreme ultraviolet(EUV)*** TEC depletions appeared sequentially over Japan for approximately 8 hours in sunlit *** 06 LT on 29 May,when the plasma depletions first appeared over Japan,the background TEC was enhanced to approximately 17 TECU,and then decreased to approximately 80%of the TEC typical of magnetically quiet *** conclude that this temporal variation of background plasma density in the ionosphere was responsible for the persistence of these plasma depletions for so long in *** using the Naval Research Laboratory:Sami2 is Another Model of the Ionosphere(SAMI2),we have evaluated how plasma production and ambipolar diffusion along the magnetic field may affect the rate of plasma depletion *** shows that the plasma density increases at the time of plasma depletion appearance;subsequent decreases in the plasma density appear to be responsible for the long-lasting persistence of plasma depletions during *** plasma density depletion in the top side ionosphere is not filled by the plasma generated by the solar EUV productions because plasma production occurs mainly at the bottom side of the ionosphere.

Effects of slope gradient on runoff from bare-fallow purple soil in China under natural rainfall conditions

Purple soil is highly susceptible for overland flow and surface erosion, therefore understanding surface runoff and soil erosion processes in the purple soil region are important to mitigate flooding and erosion hazards. Slope angle is an important parameter that affects the magnitude of runoff and thus surface erosion in hilly landscapes or bare land area. However, the effect of slope on runoff generation remains unclear in many different soils including Chinese purple soil. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different slope gradients and surface runoff for bare-fallow purple soil, using 5 m × 1.5 m experimental plots under natural rainfall conditions. Four experimental plots(10°, 16°, 20° and 26°) were established in theYanting Agro-ecological Experimental Station of Chinese Academy of Science in central Sichuan Basin. The plot was equipped with water storage tank to monitor water level change. Field monitoring from July 1 to October 31, 2012 observed 42 rainfall events which produced surface runoff from the experimental plots. These water level changes were converted to runoff. The representative eight rainfall events were selected for further analysis, the relationship between slope and runoff coefficient were determined using ANOVA, F-test, and z-score analysis. The results indicated a strong correlation between rainfall and runoff in cumulative amount basis. The mean value of the measured runoff coefficient for four experimental plots was around 0.1. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between slope and runoff coefficient. We reviewed the relationship between slope and runoff in many previous studiesand calculated z-score to compare with our experimental results. The results of z-score analysis indicated that both positive and negative effects of slope on runoff coefficient were obtained, however a moderate gradient(16°-20° in this study) could be a threshold of runoff generation for many different soils

Non-invasive potato defects detection has been demanded for sorting and grading *** on the classification of the defects has been available,however,investigation on the severity level calculation is *** the detection of the common scab,it has been found that imaging in the infrared region provide an interesting characteristic that could distinguish defected area to normal ***,investigations on this wavelength range is interesting to add more knowledge and for *** this research,the multispectral image has been obtained and investigated especially at three wavelengths(950,1150,1600 nm).Image pre-processing and pseudo-color conversion techniques were explored to enhance the contrast between defects,normal background skin area and soil *** show that external defects,such as common scab and some mechanical damage types,appear brighter in the near infrared region,especially at 1600 nm against the normal skin *** has been found that pseudo-color images conversion provides more information regarding type if surface characteristics compared to grayscale single *** segmentation using pseudo-color images after multiplication operation pre-processing could be used for common scab and mechanical damage detection excluding soil deposits with a Dice Sorensen coefficient of *** addition,image segmentation using single image at 1600 nm shown relatively better results with Dice Sorensen coefficient of 0.72 with note that thick soil deposits will also be *** severity level evaluation had an R2 correlation of 0.84 against standard measurements of severity.

Equations of state of iron and nickel to the pressure at the center of the Earth

Synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction investigations of iron(Fe)and nickel(Ni)are conducted at pressures up to 354 and 368 GPa,respectively,and the equations of state(EOSs)at 298 K for the two elements are obtained for data extending to pressures as high as those at the center of the Earth,using the latest Pt-EOS pressure *** a least-squares fit to the Vinet equation using the observed pressure–volume data,the isothermal bulk modulus K0 and its pressure derivative K′0 are estimated to be 159.27(99)GPa and 5.86(4)for hcp-Fe,and 173.5(1.4)GPa and 5.55(5)for *** comparing the present EOSs and extrapolated EOSs reported in the literature for Fe and Ni,the volumes of Fe and Ni at 365 GPa are found to be 2.3%and 1.5%larger than those estimated from extrapolated EOSs in previous studies,*** is concluded that these discrepancies are due to the pressure *** present results suggest that the densities of Fe and Ni at a pressure of 365 GPa corresponding to the center of the Earth are 2.3%and 1.5%,respectively,lower than previously thought.

Unsteady Transonic Flow Control around an Airfoil in a Channel

Transonic internal flow around an airfoil is associated with self-excited unsteady shock wave oscillation. This unsteady phenomenon generates buffet, high speed impulsive noise, non-synchronous vibration, high cycle fatigue failure and so on. Present study investigates the effectiveness of perforated cavity to control this unsteady flow field. The cavity has been incorporated on the airfoil surface. The degree of perforation of the cavity is kept constant as 30%. However, the number of openings(perforation) at the cavity upper wall has been varied. Results showed that this passive control reduces the strength of shock wave compared to that of baseline airfoil. As a result, the intensity of shock wave/boundary layer interaction and the root mean square(RMS) of pressure oscillation around the airfoil have been reduced with the control method.

Effect of forest thinning on hydrologic nitrate exports from a Nsaturated plantation

Although several studies have assessed the effects of thinning on water quality,including nitrogen(N)exports,few have examined N-saturated *** study assessed the short-term effect of thinning on N exports from a N-saturated plantation forest in northern Kyushu,western Japan,that was thinned(43%of basal area)during January-March *** levels at the gauging station were continually measured,and streamwater baseflow and stormflow samples were collected before(2011)and after(2013)forest *** precipitation before(2469 mm)and after(2418 mm)forest thinning differed little,and annual water discharge after thinning(1641 mm)was similar to that before thinning(1609 mm).However,direct flow during stormflow periods was higher after thinning(260 mm)than before(153 mm).The concentrations of major ions in stream water did not differ before and after *** a result,the high annual dissolved inorganic N(DIN)exports differed little before(35.8 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)and after(36.5 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)forest *** exports during stormflow periods were slightly higher after(12.2 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)than before thinning(10.5 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)and were proportional to the increased direct flow after thinning(561 mm after vs.470 mm before thinning).We concluded that thinning does not affect annual N exports from the N-saturated plantation forest,but it can increase the proportion of N exported during stormflow periods in proportion to increased water volume of direct flow after thinning.

Background:Malignant intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(IPMN)has poor *** carcinogenesis of IPMN is not *** aim of this study was to clarify transitions in phosphorylated Smad3 signaling during IPMN ***:By using immunohistochemistry,we examined the expression of pSmad3C and pSmad3L from 51 IPMN surgical specimens resected at our institution between 2010 and *** also examined the expression of Ki-67,c-Myc and ***:The median immunostaining index of pSmad3C was 79.2%in low-grade dysplasia,74.9%in highgrade dysplasia,and 42.0%in invasive carcinoma(P<0.01),whereas that of pSmad3L was 3.4%,4.3%,and 42.4%,respectively(P<0.01).There was a negative relationship between the expression of pSmad3C and c-Myc(P<0.001,r=-0.615)and a positive relationship between the expression of pSmad3L and c-Myc(P<0.001,r=0.696).Negative relationship between the expression of pSmad3C and Ki-67(P<0.01,r=-0.610)and positive relationship between the expression of pSmad3L and Ki-67(P<0.01,r=0.731)were confirmed.p-JNK-positive cells were frequently observed among pSmad3L-positive cancer *** median of pSmad3L/pSmad3C ratio in the non-recurrence group and the recurrence group were 0.58(range,0.05–0.93),3.83(range,0.85–5.96),respectively(P=0.02).The median immunostaining index of c-Myc in the non-recurrence group and the recurrence group were 2.91(range,0–36.9)and 82.1(range,46.2–97.1),respectively(P=0.02).The median immunostaining index of Ki-67 in the non-recurrence group and the recurrence group were 12.9(range 5.7–30.8)and 90.9(range 52.9–98.5),respectively(P=0.02).Conclusions:pSmad3L was upregulated in malignant ***3L/pSmad3C ratio may be a useful prognostic factor in IPMN.

Numerical simulation to evaluate gas diffusion of turbulent flow in mine ventilation system

Tracer gas technique is a method to analyze the airflow path, measure the airflow quantity, and detect any recirculation or leakages in underground mine. In addition, it is also possible to evaluate the axial gas diffusion of gas in turbulent bulk flow by utilizing the tracer gas data. This paper discussed about the measurement using tracer gas technique in Cibaliung Underground Mine, Indonesia and the evaluation of effective axial diffusion coefficient, E, by numerical simulation. In addition, a scheme to treat network flow in mine ventilation system was also proposed. The effective axial diffusion coefficient for each airway was evaluated based on Taylor's theoretical equation. It is found that the evaluated diffusion coefficient agrees well with Taylor's equation by considering that the wall friction factor, f, is higher than those for smooth pipe flow. It also shows that the value of effective diffusion coefficient can be inherently determined and the value is constant when matching with other measurements. Furthermore, there are possibilities to utilize the tracer gas measurement data to evaluate the airway friction factors.

Low skeletal muscle mass and high visceral adiposity are associated with recurrence of acute cholecystitis after conservative management:A propensity score-matched cohort study

Background:Recurrent acute cholecystitis(RAC)can occur after non-surgical treatment for acute cholecystitis(AC),and can be more severe in comparison to the first episode of *** skeletal muscle mass or adiposity have various effects in several *** aimed to clarify the relationship between RAC and body ***:Patients with AC who were treated at our hospital between January 2011 and March 2022 were *** psoas muscle mass and adipose tissue area at the third lumbar level were measured using computed tomography at the first episode of *** areas were divided by height to obtain the psoas muscle mass index(PMI)and subcutaneous/visceral adipose tissue index(SATI/VATI).According to median VATI,SATI and PMI values by sex,patients were divided into the high and low PMI *** performed propensity score matching to eliminate the baseline differences between the high PMI and low PMI groups and analyzed the cumulative incidence and predictors of ***:The entire cohort was divided into the high PMI(n=81)and low PMI(n=80)*** the propensity score-matched cohort there were 57 patients in each *** Kaplan-Meier analysis,the low PMI group and the high VATI group had a significantly higher cumulative incidence of RAC than their counterparts(log-rank P=0.001 and 0.015,respectively).In a multivariate Cox regression analysis,the hazard ratios of low PMI and low VATI for RAC were 5.250(95%confidence interval 1.083-25.450,P=0.039)and 0.158(95%confidence interval:0.026-0.937,P=0.042),***:Low skeletal muscle mass and high visceral adiposity were independent risk factors for RAC.
