The Extension Rate of the Medial Collateral Ligament of the Knee Joint during the Valgus Stress Test: Two Case Reports

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of measuring the length of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) to compare the MCL burden when the knee joint is placed under valgus stress in the open and closed and closed kinetic chain. Two examiners conducted the examination. The MCL length was measured using ultrasonography. Two subjects were measured in unload bearing and load-bearing positions, with and without valgus stress test at the knee joint extension and 30° flexion, under eight different measurement conditions. The MCL of the subject was delineated in the longitudinal direction using an ultrasound system. The attachment points of the medial femoral and tibial condyle of the MCL were identified, and the ligament length was measured. The MCL rate before and after the valgus stress test in the loading and unloading positions was calculated. The MCL length increased by an average of 8.9% when the external stress test was performed in the non-weight bearing and knee extension positions and by an average of 17.0% when external stress was applied in the non-weight bearing and knee flexion positions. The MCL length increased by an average of 12.2% when the external stress test was performed in the load-bearing and knee extension positions and an average of 8.9% when the valgus stress test was applied in load-bearing and knee flexion positions. In conclusion, the effect of valgus stress on the MCL differs between load-bearing and non-load-bearing positions. It is considered that the dynamic stabilization mechanism works in the knee joint flexion position in the load position and works simultaneously as the static stabilization mechanism, which limits the knee joint valgus and reduces the extension rate of MCL. Medial Longitudinal Arch Pad Influences Landing Control of the Lower Limbs during Single-Leg Jump-Landing

Background: Arch support has the effect of maintaining arch and correcting alignment, and it is broadly used for the prevention of sports impediment and treatment of athletes with lowered MLA and foot problems. The fact that the morphological change of MLA damages balance sense and postural control, it was reported that the insole supporting the arch of MLA improved postural balance. There are several studies regarding the effects of arch support;however, its effects on landing control have not been clarified. Therefore, in our research, we discussed the effect of MLA support for landing control, using lower limb dynamic alignment and the moment during landing as indexes. Methods: This study measured the landing motion to be evaluated was to jump from a platform with a height of 30 cm by taking-off with a single foot, and landing on a single foot on a floor reaction force gauge placed ahead and stay still for three seconds for the subjects were 13 healthy females. A soft 6 mm Boron sheet cut in the size of 9 × 3.5 cm, applied with double-sided tape (MLA pad) was used for arch support (hereafter referred to as “pad”). For the lower limb evaluation, an 8-camera with a three-dimensional behavioral analyzer (CORTEX, NAC product, sampling frequency: 120 Hz) and a floor reaction force gauge (AMTI product, sampling frequency: 1000 Hz) were used. Ten successful jump-landing tests for each limb were used for further analyses using Visual 3D software (Cmotion Inc., Kingston, Canada). Analysis objects were knee joint bending angle and valgus angle during landing;knee joint maximum bending angle;bending knee joint valgus angle, hip joint bending angle, adduction angle, ankle joint plantar flexion angle, varus angle at the time of knee joint maximum bending angle;and each joint moment. Rate of hexabromocyclododecane decomposition and production of brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during combustion in a pilot-scale incinerator

Here, we examined the incineration of extruded polystyrene containing hexabromocyclododecane（HBCD） in a pilot-scale incinerator under various combustion temperatures（800–950℃） and flue gas residence times（2–8 sec）. Rates of HBCD decomposition ranged from 99.996%（800℃, 2 sec） to 99.9999%（950℃, 8 sec）; the decomposition of HBCD, except during the initial stage of combustion（flue gas residence time 〈 2 sec）, followed a pseudo-first-order kinetics model. An Arrhenius plot revealed that the activation energy and frequency factor of the decomposition of HBCD by combustion were 14.2 kJ/mol and 1.69 sec^（-1）,respectively. During combustion, 11 brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（BrPAHs）were detected as unintentional by-products. Of the 11 BrPAHs detected, 2-bromoanthracene and 1-bromopyrene were detected at the highest concentrations. The mutagenic and carcinogenic BrPAHs 1,5-dibromoanthracene and 1-bromopyrene were most frequently detected in the flue gases analyzed. The total concentration of BrPAHs exponentially increased（range,87.8–2,040,000 ng/m^3） with increasing flue gas residence time. Results from a qualitative analysis using gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry suggest that bromofluorene and bromopyrene（or fluoranthene） congeners were also produced during the combustion.

Growth promotion of interspecific hybrid embryos between Cucumis anguria and Melon(C. melo) by fruit heating

Wild species of the genus Cucumis, such as C. anguria, are resistant to various melon(C. melo) diseases such as Fusarium wilt race 1.2 and are anticipated as genetic resources of melon. However, in the interspecific crosses between C. anguria and melon, the abortion of the embryos was observed in the early growth stage and could not be regenerated even when cultured. Therefore, for embryo rescue, it is necessary to promote embryo growth during abortion occurrence. This study investigated the effects of fruit heating on embryo growth in interspecific hybrids of C. anguria and melon. In the heating device, the minimum night temperature around the fruit was maintained above 21.5 °C. The ovule grain area of C. anguria × MR-1 with fruit heating was significantly enlarged compared to that without fruit-heating. It was also significantly enlarged compared with the ovule grain area of C. anguria self-pollination. Although, in C. anguria × MR-1 without fruit-heating, no embryo was observed until 10 days after pollination(DAP), and pre-embryos were observed at 13 DAP. Conversely, in C. anguria × MR-1 with fruit-heating, pre-embryos were even observed at 10 DAP. These results suggest that the possibility of embryo or ovule culture regeneration has increased due to embryo growth promotion.

Analytical study of performance evaluation for seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete building using 3D dynamic nonlinear finite element analysis

This paper presents three-dimensional finite element （FE） analyses of an all-frame model of a three-story reinforced concrete （RC） building damaged in the 1999 Taiwan Chi-Chi Earthquake. Non-structural brick walls of the building acted as a seismic resistant element although their contributions were neglected in the design. Hence, the entire structure of a typical frame was modeled and static and dynamic nonlinear analyses were conducted to evaluate the contributions of the brick walls. However, the results of the analyses were considerably overestimated due to coarse mesh discretizations, which were unavoidable due to limited computer resources. This study corrects the overestimations by modifying （1） the tensile strengths and （2） shear stiffness reduction factors of concrete and brick. The results indicate that brick walls improve frame strength although shear failures are caused in columns shortened by spandrel walls. Then, the effectiveness of three types of seismic retrofits is evaluated. The maximum drift of the first floor is reduced by 89.3%, 94.8%, and 27.5% by Steel-confined, FuI1-RC, and Full-brick models, respectively. Finally, feasibility analyses of models with soils were conducted. The analyses indicated that the soils elongate the natural period of building models although no significant differences were observed.

QUADRANT ANALYSIS OF BUBBLE INDUCED VELOCITY FLUCTUATIONS IN A TRANSITIONAL BOUNDARY LAYER

Our previous study showed that the frictional drag decreases with increasing void fraction at Re〉1300, while it increases at Re 〈 1000. Decomposition of the Reynolds shear stress also implied that bubbles induce isotropy of turbulence. In order to confirm our previous analysis and to further investigate flow fields in the vicinity of bubbles, we analyze velocity fluctuations on the quadrant space in the streamwise and transverse directions （u′-v′ plane）. Here, we focus on two specific Reynolds numbers （at Re≈900 and ≈1410, which are close to the laminar-to-turbulent transition regime） and discuss bubble effects on sweep （u′〉 0, v′〈 0 ） and ejection （u′〈 0, v′〉 0） events as a function of the Reynolds number. We also illustrate velocity fluctuations in the vicinity of an individual bubble and a swarm of bubbles on the u′- v′ coordinates. The results show that a bubble swarm suppresses the velocity fluctuations at Re≈1410.
