Krill oil attenuates obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy in mice

Obesity is associated with skeletal muscle mass loss and physical dysfunction. Krill oil (KO) has been shown to be beneficial in human health. However， the effect of KO on obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy is still unclear. In this study， the male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks to induce obesity， and then were intragastric administration with 400 mg/kg bw KO for an additional 6 weeks. The results showed that KO treatment reduced body weight， fat accumulation and serum pro-inflammatory cytokines in HFD-induced obese mice. Importantly， KO treatment attenuated skeletal muscle atrophy in HFD-fed mice， as evidenced by preserving skeletal muscle mass， average myofiber cross-sectional area and grip strength. KO administration also mitigated obesity-induced ectopic lipid deposition and inflammatory response in skeletal muscle. Additionally， KO treatment inhibited the transcriptional activities of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65 and forkhead box O 3a (FoxO3a)， and then down-regulated muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx) and muscle-specific RING finger protein 1 (MuRF1) protein levels in skeletal muscle from HFD-fed mice. KO administration also improved obesity-induced impaired muscle protein synthesis via activating PI3K/Akt pathway. Furthermore， KO treatment enhanced muscle mitochondrial biogenesis in HFD-induced obese mice via activating PGC-1α pathway. Collectively， KO might be developed as a potential nutritional supplement for the prevention and treatment of obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy.

Biliary stenting is an important interventional method for the prevention and treatment of biliary tract diseases.However,complications,such as postoperative biliary infection and re-stenosis,frequently occur due to the extensive scope of the biliary system and the complex composition of bile.The com-bination of coating technology and biliary stents is expected to bring new approaches to the solution of these problems.The cutting-edge advance on functional coatings on biliary stents is reviewed from seven perspectives:anticorrosion,-bacterial,-tumor,stone-dissolving,X-ray visibility,anti-stent migration and functional composite coatings.The de-velopment trend is also discussed.Overall.the performance of the numerous functional coatings for various purposes is generally up to expectations,but the balance between the medica tions'effectiveness and their safety needs to be further adjusted.Many contemporary investigations have advanced to the leve of animal experiments,offering crucial fundamental assurance for broader human studies.The combination of biliary stent and functional coatings is an innovative idea with great potential for future development.

The integrated sensing and communications(ISAC) technology has been perceived as a key feature of5G-Advanced and beyond mobile communication networks. Compared with sensing in millimeter-wave bands, sensing at sub-6 GHz band is an exceptional incentive to promote the industrialization process of ISAC due to its incomparable advantages in industrial development, especially for intelligent transportation and smart drone networks. This paper elaborates on the top challenges of sub-6 GHz ISAC technologies, as well as the potential solutions to improve the sensing capability.

Non-B-form DNA is associated with centromere stability in newly-formed polyploid wheat

Non-B-form DNA differs from the classic B-DNA double helix structure and plays a crucial regulatory role in replication and transcription.However,the role of non-B-form DNA in centromeres,especially in polyploid wheat,remains elusive.Here,we systematically analyzed seven non-B-form DNA motif profiles(A-phased DNA repeat,direct repeat,G-quadruplex,inverted repeat,mirror repeat,short tandem repeat,and Z-DNA)in hexaploid wheat.We found that three of these non-B-form DNA motifs were enriched at centromeric regions,especially at the CENH3-binding sites,suggesting that non-B-form DNA may create a favorable loading environment for the CENH3 nucleosome.To investigate the dynamics of centromeric non-B form DNA during the alloploidization process,we analyzed DNA secondary structure using CENH3 ChIP-seq data from newly formed allotetraploid wheat and its two diploid ancestors.We found that newly formed allotetraploid wheat formed more non-B-form DNA in centromeric regions compared with their parents,suggesting that non-B-form DNA is related to the localization of the centromeric regions in newly formed wheat.Furthermore,non-B-form DNA enriched in the centromeric regions was found to preferentially form on young LTR retrotransposons,explaining CENH3's tendency to bind to younger LTR.Collectively,our study describes the landscape of non-B-form DNA in the wheat genome,and sheds light on its potential role in the evolution of polyploid centromeres.

Thrombophilia denotes a condition,whether acquired or hereditary,characterized by increased susceptibility to hypercoagulation.[1]This condition was first described in 1965,coinciding with the discovery of an inherited predisposition to venous thromboembolism(VTE)in patients deficient in antithrombin III.[2]While arterial and venous thromboses are common in hospitalized patients,acute myocardial infarction(AMI)and pulmonary embolism(PE)stand out as lifethreateningconditions.However,theoccurrenceof AMI complicated by PE is exceedingly rare,especially when considering cases where paradoxical embolism originating from a patent foramen ovale is absent.This report presents a case of AMI complicated with PE.A comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of this rare yet critical condition is important for ensuring prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Modulation mechanism of electron energy dissipation on superlubricity based on fluorinated 2D ZIFs

Electron energy dissipation is an important energy dissipation pathway that cannot be ignored in friction process.Two-dimensional zeolite imidazole frameworks(2D ZIFs)and fluorine doping strategies give 2D Zn-ZIF and 2D Co-ZIF unique electrical properties,making them ideal materials for studying electron energy dissipation mechanism.In this paper,based on the superlubricity modulation of 2D fluoridated ZIFs,the optimal tribological properties are obtained on the 2D F-Co-ZIF surface,with the friction coefficient as low as 0.0010.Electrical experiments,density functional theory(DFT)simulation,and fluorescence detection are used to explain the mechanism of fluorine doping regulation of tribological properties from the two stages,namely energy transfer and energy release.Specifically,the energy will transfer into the friction system through the generation of electron–hole pairs under an external excitation,and release by radiation and non-radiation energy dissipation channels.Fluorination reduces energy transfer by altering the electronic properties and band structures of ZIFs,and slows down the charge transfer by enhancing the shielding efficiency,thus slowing the non-radiative energy dissipation rate during the energy release stage.Our insights not only help us better understand the role of fluorine doping in improving tribological properties,but also provide a new way to further explore the electron energy dissipation pathway during friction.

Two-electron oxygen reduction reaction(2e-ORR)provides an environmentally friendly direction for the on-site production of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)).Central to this technology is the exploitation of efficient,economical,and safe 2e-ORR electrocatalysts.This overview starts with the fundamental chemistry of ORR to highlight the decisive role of adsorbing intermediates on the reaction pathway and activity,followed by a comprehensive survey of the tuning strategies to favor 2e-ORR on traditional precious metals.The latest achievements in designing efficient and selective precious-metal-based single-atom catalysts(SACs)and metal-nitrogen-carbon(M-Nx/C)catalysts,from the aspects of material synthesis,theoretical calculations,and mass transport promotion,are systematically summarized.Brief introductions on the evaluation metrics for 2e-ORR catalysts and the primary reactor designs for cathodic H_(2)O_(2)synthesis are also included.We conclude this review with an outlook on the challenges and direction of efforts to advance electrocatalytic 2e-ORR into realistic H_(2)O_(2)production.

Gibbs Ensemble Monte Carlo(GEMC)is a molecular simulation method commonly used for simulating phase equilibrium.This method has been proposed since 1987 and applied in many fields,such as geology,planetary science,chemical engineering,material science,etc.GEMC method combines canonical(NVT),isobaricisothermal(NPT),and grand canonical(μVT)Monte Carlo techniques in a single simulation.The GEMC method was developed on the fundamental law of phase equilibrium that chemical potentials of each phase all equal.Two key factors affect the rationality and reliability of GEMC simulations:1.particles can be efficiently moved in/out from certain phase during simulation;2.samplings can represent the whole system well,in other words,samplings hold good ergodicity.In addition,various parallel methods have been developed to improve the simulation efficiency.In this review,an introduction to the theoretical fundamentals,improvements on particle movement and sampling protocols,acceleration techniques and some applications of the GEMC method will be presented.This is the first integrated review introducing the fundamentals,improvements and applications of the GEMC simulation method.
