Unprecedented Hot Extremes Observed in City Clusters in China during Summer 2022

We report here extreme daytime and nighttime temperatures,severe heatwaves,and compound hot events recorded in China's five most densely populated city clusters in summer *** records were set,with daytime maximum temperatures>42℃in cities along the Yangtze River valley and extreme nighttime temperatures>30℃.Widespread prolonged heatwaves lasting for>40 days and compound hot days occurring for>32 consecutive days were experienced in these city *** explore the possible causes of these extreme events,we analyzed the linkages between the changes in the mean temperatures and hot extremes for different-sized cities in the city *** found that megacities(e.g.,Beijing,Shanghai,Guangzhou,etc.)and large cities(e.g.,Baoding,Wuxi,Foshan,etc.),especially those located in central and eastern China,experienced unprecedented extreme high temperatures,not only in the daytime but also at *** observed large increases in the mean temperatures and more frequent and more intense hot extremes in cities affected by both the background global warming and intensified *** and large cities experienced higher and more frequent extreme temperatures and greater warming trends than medium-and small-sized cities(e.g.,Zhangjiakou,Zhenjiang,Yaan,etc.).The evidence of the dependence of temperature trends on a city's size shows that intensified heat island effects may increase the threat of hot extremes in cities undergoing rapid urbanization.

Development and Validation of an RNA Binding Proteinassociated Prognostic Model for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Background and Aims:The survival rate of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma is *** abnormal expression of RNA-binding proteins(RBPs)is closely related to the occurrence and development of malignant *** primary aim of this study was to identify RBPs related to the prognosis of liver cancer and to construct a prognostic model of liver ***:We downloaded the hepatocellular carcinoma gene sequencing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas(***/)database,constructed a protein-protein interaction network,and used Cytoscape to realize the *** among 325 abnormally expressed genes for RBPs,9(XPO5,enhancer of zeste 2 polycomb repressive complex 2 subunit[EZH2],CSTF2,BRCA1,RRP12,MRPL54,EIF2AK4,PPARGC1A,and SEPSECS)were selected for construction of the prognostic ***,we further verified the results through the Gene Expression Omnibus(***/geo/)database and in vitro ***:A prognostic model was constructed,which determined that the survival time of patients in the high-risk group was significantly shorter than that of the low-risk group(p<0.01).Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis suggested that the risk score was an independent prognostic factor(p<0.01).We also constructed a nomogram based on the risk score,survival time,and survival *** the same time,we verified the high expression and cancer-promoting effects of EZH2 in ***:Survival,receiver operating characteristic curve and independent prognostic analyses demonstrated that we constructed a good prognostic model,which might be useful for estimating the survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

To the editor,Mucoepidermoid carcinoma(MEC)is a common malignancy of the salivary glands,which account for approximately 30%of all malignant salivary gland neoplasms that originate in both the major and minor glands.1 But it is relatively rare at other organs,extremely rare in the hepatobiliary *** the best of our knowledge,since primary MEC of the liver was first reported in 1971,2 no more than 20 cases have been reported worldwide.

Low molecular aromatic compounds are detrimental to the enzymatic hydrolysis of ***,the specific role of their functional groups remains ***,a series of nine aromatic compounds as additives were tested to understand their effect on the hydrolysis yield of microcrystalline cellulose(MCC)and alkaline pretreated wheat *** on the results,the inhibition of aldehyde groups on MCC was greater than that of carboxyl groups,whereas for the alkaline pretreated wheat straw case,the inhibitory effect of aldehyde groups was lower than that of carboxyl *** methoxyl groups of aromatic compounds reduced the inhibitory ef-fect on enzymatic hydrolysis of both *** inhibition of aromatic compounds on MCC hydrolysis was detected in comparison with the alkaline pretreated wheat straw,indicating that the substrate lignin can offset the inhibition to a certain *** all aromatic com-pounds,syringaldehyde with one aldehyde group and two methoxyl groups improved the glucan conversion of the alkaline pretreated wheat straw.

Fluorescence life-time imaging microscopy(FLIM)monitors tumor cell death triggered by photothermal therapy with MoS_(2) nanosheets

Recently,photothermal therapy(PTT)has been proved to have great potential in tumor *** the last several years,MoS_(2),as one novel member of nanomaterials,has been applied into PTT due to its excellent photothermal conversion *** this work,we applied fuorescence lifetime imaging microscopy(FLIM)techniques into monitoring the PPT-triggered cell death under MoS_(2) nanosheet *** types of MoS_(2) nanosheets(single layer nanosheets and few layer nanosheets)were obtained,both of which exhibited presentable photothermal conversion fficacy,leading to high cell death rates of 4T1 cells(mouse breast cancer cells)under ***,live cell images of 4T1 cells were obtained via directly labeling the mitochondria with Rodamine123,which were then continuously observed with FLIM *** data showed that the fuorescence lifetimes of mitochondria targeting dye in cells treated with each type of MoS_(2) nanosheets significantly increased during PTT *** contrast,the fuorescence lifetime of the same dye in control cells(without nanomaterials)remained constant after laser *** findings suggest that FLIM can be of great value in monitoring cell death process during PTT of cancer cells,which could provide dynamic data of the cellular microenvironment at single cell level in multiple biomedical applications.

Observations of intracellular second-harmonic generation imaging in black phosphorus nanosheets

Functionalized black phosphorus(BP)nanosheets have been considered as promising nanoagents in cancer therapy due to their excellent photothermal conversion ***,it is still difficult to visually monitor the dynamic localization of BP nanoagents in cancer *** this paper,we systematically studied the second-harmonic generation(SHG)signals originating from exfoliated BP ***,under the excitation of a high frequency pulsed laser at 950 nm,the SHG signals of BP nanosheets in vitro are almost undetectable because of their poor ***,the intracellular SHG signals from BP nanosheets could be measured by in vivo optical imaging due to the efficient enrichment of living HeLa ***,the SHG signal intensity from BP nanosheets increases with the prolonged incubation *** can be expected that the BP nanosheets could be a promising intracellular SHG nanoprobe employed for visually in vivo biomedical imaging in practical cancer photothermal therapy(PIT).

近年来,城市气候变化问题引起高度关注。综合IPCC第一工作组第六次评估报告(IPCC AR6)关于气候变暖背景下城市对极端天气气候事件影响的评估,本文得到以下科学认识:城市化加剧了局部气候变暖,全球许多城市都面临更多更强的高温热浪事件;城市化使得诸多城市区域及其下风向极端降水增加,地表径流加强;沿海城市受到日益加剧的与海平面上升有关的复合型洪水的影响;城市污染物排放和不利通风的建筑结构加剧了区域污染,同时增加了地表的臭氧含量。预计未来城市极端高温、极端降水及有关洪水事件将更为频发,空气污染形势更为严峻,气候变化风险进一步加大。中国城镇化进程迅速,需要进一步加强气候变化背景下城市极端事件的观测、形成机理和数值模拟研究,以提升城市极端事件风险认识水平和应对能力。

A review of paleoenvironmental reconstruction using crater lake sediments in monsoonal China

The sediments of crater lakes were one of the ideal archives for high-resolution paleoenvironmental reconstruction. This paper collected sedimentary records of 21 crater lakes in monsoonal China and systematically discussed the geographical distribution and formation ages of these crater lakes. Sediment provenance of crater lakes and its influencing factors were analyzed， and paleoenvironmental sequences and human activities records on different timescales reconstructed by crater lake sediments in monsoonal China were reviewed. The following points are highlighted: (1) Crater lakes in monsoonal China have been shown to preserve continuous long-time sediments that can exceed even 400 kyr， although the chronology of some sediments in southern China is debated and there were currently fewer long time records from northeastern China; (2) The sediment provenance of crater lakes in northern China (e.g. aeolian inputs) was different from that in southern China (e.g. the volcanic-lake rim)， due to the different location and deposition conditions of crater lakes; (3) Crater lake sediments have been used to reconstruct the history of climate changes on different timescales， but reconstruction studies of glacial-interglacial and decadal-annual scale records and studies of spatial comparisons of records on different timescales still need to be strengthened; (4) The anthropogenic signals， which include cultivation， logging， and industrial activity， are well documented in crater lake sediments from different areas and can therefore provide key evidence for the study of the Anthropocene. Crater lake sediments are vital paleoclimate archives for the reconstruction of high-resolution climate changes and for the understanding of the impact of anthropogenic activities. However， there are still questions that need to be solved， and a more comprehensive study of crater lake sediments is expected in the future.
