Check dams are widely used worldwide for the soil and water conservation. Many of them have no spillways, resulting in frequent dam breach failures during heavy rainfall events. This paper proposes a new geobag stepped spillway for small check dams. The structure of the spillway primarily consists of a stepped chute created from geobags filled with local soil compacted and consolidated with a small amount of cement. The developed composite geosynthetic material exhibits water erosion resistance,high strength against puncture, and high tensile strength. To examine the feasibility of the proposed geobag stepped spillway, a prototype pilot test was designed and constructed in a check dam in Shaanxi Province, China, with a height of 10 m and a downstream slope of 1(vertical) to 2(horizontal). More than30 overflow tests were done for a geobag stepped spillway under uncontrolled and gated weir flow conditions. Based on the measurements of flow velocities and flow depths of four cross sections, it was observed that the energy dissipation ratio ranged between 73.8% and 92.8% for all the examined conditions. In addition, no significant deformation of the geobag stepped spillway was observed, although the maximum flow velocity at the spillway toe was 6.7 m/s. This study confirms that the proposed geobag stepped spillway is a promising approach for providing an effective, safe, and economical flood release structure for small check dams.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder carcinoma, a lethal malignant neoplasm with poor prognosis, has dismal results of surgical resection and chemoradiotherapy. We previously reported that norcantharidin (NCTD) is useful against growth, proliferation, and invasion of human gallbladder carcinoma GBC-SD cells in vitro. In this study, we further studied the inhibitory effect of NCTD on the growth of xenografted tumors of human gallbladder carcinoma in nude mice in vivo and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: The tumor xenograft model of human gallbladder carcinoma in nude mice in vivo was established with subcutaneous GBC-SD cells. The experimental mice were randomly divided into control, 5-FU, NCTD, and NCTD+5-FU groups which were given different treatments. Tumor growth in terms of size, growth curve, and inhibitory rate was evaluated. Cell cycle, apoptosis, and morphological changes of the xenografted tumors were assessed by flow cytometry and light/electron microscopy. The expression of the cell cycle-related proteins cyclin-D1 and p27 as well as the apoptosis-related proteins Bcl-2, Box, and survivin were determined by the streptavidin-biotin complex (SABC) method and RT-PCR. RESULTS: NCTD inhibited the growth of the xenografted tumors in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Tumor volume decreased (5.61+/-0.39 vs. 9.78+/-0.61 cm(3), P=0.000) with an increased tumor inhibitory rate (42.63% vs. 0%, P=0.012) in the NTCD group compared with the control group. The apoptosis rate increased (15.08+/-1.49% vs. 5.49+/-0.59%, P=0.0001) along with a decreased percentage of cells in S phase (43.47+/-2.83% vs. 69.85+/-1.96%, P=0.0001) in the NTCD group compared with the control group. The morphological changes of apoptosis such as nuclear shrinkage, chromatin aggregation, chromosome condensation, and typical apoptosis bodies in the xenografted tumor cells induced by NCTD were observed by light and electron microscopy. Objective To evaluate the effects of supplementation of glutamine (GLN) on maintaining glu- tathione (GSH) level, immune system function, liver function, and clinical outcome of patients receiving abdominal operation. Methods Forty patients undergoing elective abdominal surgical treatment were randomly divided into 2 groups: study group (n=20) and control group (n=20). All patients received total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for up to 7 days during perioperative period. The study group received TPN supplemented with GLN dipeptide while the control group received TPN without GLN dipeptide. Patients in both groups received equivalent nitrogen and caloric intake. Blood sample was taken on preoperative day, and the 1st, 3rd, 6th postoperative day to measure GSH level, immune indexes, and liver function indexes. Results The decrease of GSH level in plasma and red blood cell (RBC) in study group was less than that in control group during postoperative period. Ratio of GSH/glutathione disulfide (GSSG) in plasma in study grouP was higher than that in control group on the 3rd postoperative day (52.53±11.46 vs. 31.43±7.27, P = 0.001). Albumin level in study group was higher than that in control group on the 3rd postoperative day (37.7±3.8 g/L vs. 33.8±4.2 g/L, P = 0.02). There was no significant difference in the levels of immunoglobin (IgG, IgM, IgA) or T lymphocyte subgroup (CD4, CD8, CD4/CD8) in both groups during postoperative period. There was one case with infectious complication in control group, while none in study group. A trend of shortened hospital stay was observed in study group compared with control group (22.3±2.1 d vs. 24.9±1.7 d,P= 0.32). Conclusions Supplementation of GLN-enriched TPN has beneficial effects on maintaining GSH levels in plasma and RBC, sustaining GSH/GSSG ratio and albumin level, and keeping antioxidant abilities during postoperative period in patients with abdominal operation, with the trends of decreasing incidence of infectious complicati
