Paleogene transgression process and environmental evolution in the deepwater area of the Baiyun Depression in the northern South China Sea

Formation of Hengchun Accretionary Prism Turbidites and Implications for Deep-water Transport Processes in the Northern South China Sea

Located at the end of the northern Manila Trench,the Hengchun Peninsula is the latest exposed part of Taiwan Island,and preserves a complete sequence of accretionary deep-sea turbidite *** with extensive field observations,a’source-to-sink’approach was employed to systematically analyze the formation and evolutionary process of the accretionary prism turbidites on the Hengchun *** at the base of the Hengchun turbidites are abundant mafic normal oceanic crust gravels with a certain degree of *** gravels with U-Pb ages ranging from 25.4 to23.6 Ma are underlain by hundreds-of-meters thickness of younger deep-sea sandstone turbidites with interbedded *** indicates that large amounts of terrigenous materials from both the’Kontum-Ying-Qiong’River of Indochina and the Pearl River of South China were transported into the deep-water areas of the northern South China Sea during the late Miocene and further eastward in the form of turbidity *** turbidity flow drastically eroded and snatched mafic materials from the normal South China Sea oceanic crust along the way,and subsequently unloaded large bodies of basic gravel-bearing sandstones to form turbidites near the northern Manila *** the Philippine Sea Plate drifting clockwise to the northwest,these turbidite successions eventually migrated and,since the Middle Pleistocene,were exposed as an accretionary prism on the Hengchun Peninsula.

Cenozoic Sea-land Transition and its Petroleum Geological Significance in the Northern South China Sea

The process of Cenozoic sea-land changes in the northern South China Sea(SCS)controlled the sedimentary filling pattern and played an important role in the petroleum geological characteristics of the northern marginal sedimentary *** the control of the opening process of the SCS,the northern SCS Cenozoic transgression generally showed the characteristics of early in the east and late in the west,and early in the south and late in the *** initial transgression occurred in the Eocene in the Taixinan Basin(TXNB)of the eastern SCS,while the transgression occurred until the Pliocene in the Yinggehai Basin(YGHB)of the western *** Ocean Discovery Program(IODP)expeditions(Expeditions 367/368)revealed that the initial transgression of the SCS basin occurred at approximately 34 Ma,which was the initial opening time of the *** period of drastic changes in the sedimentary environment caused by large-scale transgression corresponded to the opening time of the southwestern subbasin(approximately 23 Ma),which also represented the peak of the spreading of the *** sea-land transition process controls the distribution of alternating continent-marine facies,marine facies source rocks and reservoirs in the *** marine facies source rocks of the basins in the northern SCS have a trend of gradually becoming younger from east to west,which is consistent with the regional process of gradual transgression from east to *** sea-level changes were comprehensively influenced by SCS opening and global sea-level *** processes led to the early development in the east and south and late development in the west and north for the carbonate platform in the *** platforms form another type of"selfgenerating and self-accumulating"oil-gas reservoir in the northern *** sea-land transition controlled the depositional filling patterns of different basins and laid the foundation of marine deposits for oil and gas *** source

Geochemical characteristics of Oligocene-Miocene sediments from the deepwater area of the northern South China Sea and their provenance implications

Geochemical and detrital zircon U-Pb dating data for drilled sediments from the Baiyun deepwater area of the northern South China Sea demonstrate a change of sedimentary sources from the Oligocene to the *** ages of the pre-rift Eocene sequences are dominated by Yanshanian ages with various peak values（110–115 Ma for U1435 and L21; 150 Ma for H1）, indicating local sediment supply from the pre-existing Mesozoic magmatic belt. For the Oligocene sediments in the northern part of the basin, the rare earth elements show different distribution characteristics, indicating sediment supply from the paleo-Zhujiang River（Pearl River）, as also confirmed by the multimodal zircon age spectra of the Lower Oligocene strata in Well X28. By contrast, a positive Eu anomaly characterizes sediments from the western and southern parts of the basin, indicating potential provenances from intermediate to basic volcanic rock materials. The Baiyun Movement at the end of the Oligocene contributed to a large-scale subsidence in the deepwater area and also a northward retreat of continental shelf break, leading to deepening depositional environment in the basin. As a result, all the detrital zircon ages of the Upper Oligocene strata from Wells X28, L13, and L21 share a similar distribution, implying the possible control of a common source like the Zhujiang River. During the Miocene, whereas sediments in the northern area were mainly sourced from the Zhujiang River Delta, and those in the southern deepwater area continued to be affected by basic volcanic activities, the Dongsha Uplift could have contributed as the main source to the eastern area.

Sediment source and environment evolution in Taiwan Island during the Eocene–Miocene

Taiwan Island’s outcropping strata can provide important insights into the sedimentary environment and source development of the southeast China *** research is based on the Eocene–Miocene strata of the Tsukeng area in the central Western Foothills,northeast shoreline of Taiwan Island and two sites of the East China Sea Shelf Basin(ECSSB),using petrology and detrital zircon U-Pb age for the *** show that central and northeast Taiwan Island experienced a transformation from continental to marine facies during the Eocene–Miocene,and the sandstone maturity changed with *** analysis shows that sediments from the Eocene–early Oligocene strata mainly originated from near-source Mesozoic rocks,whose zircon age is consistent with the igneous rock in the surrounding area and coastal Cathaysia,showing 120 Ma and 230 Ma peaks in the age spectrum *** the late Oligocene,peaks of 900 Ma and 1800 Ma are seen,indicating that deposition of matter from the old block *** sediments could be a mixture of the surrounding Mesozoic volcanic and fewer pre-Cambrian rocks sourced from the coastal river and sporadic old basement in the ECSSB instead of longdistance transportation.

Late Eocene–early Miocene provenance evolution of the Crocker Fan in the southern South China Sea

There are many large-scale Cenozoic sedimentary basins with plentiful river deltas,deep-water fans and carbonate platforms in the southern South China *** Crocker Fan was deposited as a typical submarine fan during the late Eocene–early Miocene,and stretches extensively across the entire Sarawak–Sabah of the northern Borneo ***,systematic analyses are still lacking regarding its sediment composition and potential source *** consensus has been reached yet on the provenance evolution and sedimentary infilling processes,which seriously impeded the oil-and-gas exploration *** combining with sedimentaryfacies identification,heavy mineral assemblages,elemental geochemistry and detrital zircon U-Pb dating,this paper aims to generalize an integrated analysis on the potential provenance terranes and restore source-to-sink pathways of the Crocker *** general,the Crocker Fan was initially formed over the Cretaceous–lower/middle Eocene Rajang Group by an angular Rajang *** continual southward subduction of the protoSouth China Sea resulted in magmatic activities and subsequent regional deformation and thrusting along the Lupar Line in the northern *** lowermost Crocker sequence is featured by a thick conglomerate layer sourced from in-situ or adjacent *** the late Eocene to the early Miocene,the Crocker Fan was constantly delivered with voluminous detritus from the Malay Peninsula of the western *** Zengmu Basin was widely deposited with delta plain and neritic facies sediments,while the Brunei-Sabah Basin,to the farther east,was ubiquitously characterized by turbiditic *** Crocker Fan successions are overall thick layers of modest-grained sandstones,which formed high-quality reservoirs in the southern South China Sea region.

Reinterpretation of the northern South China Sea pre-Cenozoic basement and geodynamic implications of the South China continent: constraints from combined geological and geophysical records

Both Pinghu and Huagang formations are important hydrocarbon reservoirs of the Xihu Depression in the East China Sea Shelf *** the source suppliers and restoring source-to-sink transport routes are of great significance to the future petroleum and gas *** researchers were largely confined by either limitation of geological records,highly dependence on a singular method or low-precision dating *** study integrated heavy mineral assemblages,geochemical analyses and detrital zircon U-Pb dating to reconstruct multiple source-to-sink pathways,and to provide a better understanding on the provenance evolution for the upper Pinghu–lower Huagang depositions of the Xihu *** least three major provenances have been confirmed and systematically investigated for their separate compositional *** Hupijiao Uplift(or even farther northern area)was dominated by a major Paleoproterozoic population peaked at ca.1830 Ma along with minor Mesozoic *** Haijiao Uplift to the west and the Yushan Low Uplift to the southwest,on the other hand,generate opposite U-Pb age spectra with apparently larger peaks of Indosinian and Yanshanian-aged *** be noted,both Indosinian and Paleoproterozoic peaks are almost identical in proportion for the Haijiao *** overall sedimentary pattern of late Eocene-early Oligocene was featured by both spatial and temporal *** Hupijiao Uplift was likely to cast limited impact during the late Eocene,whereas the broad southern Xihu Depression was transported by a large abundance of materials from the nearby Haijiao and Yushan Low *** northern source substantially extended its influence to the farther south during the early Oligocene by delivering plentiful sediments of higher-degree metamorphic parent *** with the proximal western and southwestern suppliers,the overall Xihu Depression was under control from both distant and local provenances.

新生代以来,全球地质演化中最大的地质事件不外乎青藏高原的形成及其环境效应,其中东亚地区的黄土堆积及大型水系的形成最为瞩目.珠江作为串联华南大陆与南海北部“源-汇”系统的纽带,是南海沉积学研究的焦点,揭示其形成过程对探讨云贵高原以及青藏东南侧的地形演变具有重要意义.采用元素地球化学与碎屑锆石U-Pb年龄谱系源汇综合示踪技术,结合珠江流域及珠江三角洲的研究成果,详细探讨珠江的诞生与演化历史.珠江河流体系初始形成于早渐新世,流域范围仅限于华南沿海地区;晚渐新世珠江发生向西拓展事件,流域面积显著扩大,达到云贵高原东侧边缘;到中新世珠江流域发生明显改变,河流进一步向西、向北溯源侵蚀,流域面积急剧扩大,深入云贵高原腹地. 23 Ma珠江流域面积的快速扩展与同时期长江三峡贯通、北方黄土发育均是该时期青藏高原大范围隆升的直接产物,是东亚地区基本形成西高东低地貌特征的具体反映.
