Characterization of rock thermophysical properties and factors affecting thermal conductivity−A case study of Datong Basin,China

Rock thermal physical properties play a crucial role in understanding deep thermal conditions,modeling the thermal structure of the lithosphere,and discovering the evolutionary history of sedimentary basins.Recent advancements in geothermal exploration,particularly the identification of high-temperature geothermal resources in Datong Basin,Shanxi,China,have opened new possibilities.This study aims to characterize the thermal properties of rocks and explore factors influencing thermal conductivity in basins hosting high-temperature geothermal resources.A total of 70 groups of rock samples were collected from outcrops in and around Datong Basin,Shanxi Province.Thermal property tests were carried out to analyze the rock properties,and the influencing factors of thermal conductivity were studied through experiments at different temperature and water-filled states.The results indicate that the thermal conductivity of rocks in Datong,Shanxi Province,typically ranges from 0.690 W/(m·K)to 6.460 W/(m·K),the thermal diffusion coefficient ranges from 0.441 mm^(2)/s to 2.023 mm^(2)/s,and the specific heat capacity of the rocks ranges from 0.569 KJ/(kg·℃)to 1.117 KJ/(kg·°C).Experimental results reveal the impact of temperature and water saturation on the thermal conductivity of the rock.The thermal conductivity decreases with increasing temperature and rises with high water saturation.A temperature correction formula for the thermal conductivity of different lithologies in the area is proposed through linear fitting.The findings from this study provide essential parameters for the assessment and prediction,development,and utilization of geothermal resources in the region and other basins with typical high-temperature geothermal resource.

Geothermal anomalies in the Xianshuihe area: Implications for tunnel construction along the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, China

This study presents a comprehensively analysis of geothermal characteristics in the Xianshuihe geothermal area along the Sichuan-Tibet Railway,using temperature logging,temperature monitoring and thermal conductivity measurement,and regional geothermal geological survey data.The research focuses on the geothermal background,geothermal field,and their potential impact on the surrounding tunnels.The investigation reveals that the average heat flow value in the study area is approximately 73.0 mW/m^(2),significantly higher than the average terrestrial heat flow in China's Mainland(62.5 mW/m^(2)).This high terrestrial heat flow signifies a distinct thermal background in the area.In addition,geothermal anomalies in the area are found to be closely associated with the distribution of hot springs along NW faults,indicating a strong control by the Xianshuihe fault zone.The study concludes that the region's favorable conditions for geothermal resources are attributed to the combination of high terrestrial heatflow background and water-conducting faults.However,these conditions also pose a potential threat of heat damage to the tunnels along the Sichuan-Tibet Railway.To evaluate the risk,the research takes into account the terrestrial heat flow,thermal conductivity of the tunnel surrounding rocks,characteristics of the regional constant temperature layer,as well as the distribution of hot springs and faults.The analysis specifically focuses on the thermal damage risk of Kangding 1# tunnel and 2# tunnel passing through the study area.Based on the findings,it is determined that Kangding 1# tunnel and 2# tunnel have relatively low risk of heat damage,as they have avoided most of the high temperature anomaly areas.However,several sections of the tunnels do traverse zones with low to medium temperatures,where surface rock temperatures can reach up to 45℃.Therefore,these regions should not be neglected during the construction and operation of the tunnel project,and mitigation measures may be necessary to address the potential he

Terrestrial heat flow is an important physical parameter in the study of heat transfer and thermal structure of the earth and it has great significance in the genesis and development and utilization potential of regional geothermal resources.Although several breakthroughs in geothermal exploration have been made in Guizhou Province.The terrestrial heat flow in this area has not been properly measured,restricting the development of geothermal resources in the province.For this reason,the terrestrial heat flow in Guizhou was measured in this study,during which the characteristics of heat flow were determined using borehole thermometry,geothermal monitoring and thermal property testing.Moreover,the influencing factors of the terrestrial heat flow were analyzed.The results show that the thermal conductivity of rocks ranges from 2.0W/(m·K)to 5.0 W/(m·K),with an average of 3.399 W/(m·K);the heat flow varies from 30.27 mW/m^(2) to 157.55 mW/m^(2),with an average of 65.26±20.93 mW/m^(2),which is slightly higher than that of the average heat flow in entire land area in China.The heat flow in Guizhou generally follows a dumbbell-shaped distribution,with high values present in the east and west and low values occurring in the north and south.The terrestrial heat flow is related to the burial depths of the Moho and Curie surface.The basaltic eruptions in the Emeishan led to a thinner lithosphere,thicker crust and lateral emplacement,which dominated the basic pattern of heat flow distribution in Guizhou.In addition,the dichotomous structure of regional active faults and concealed deep faults jointly control the heat transfer channels and thus influence the terrestrial heat flow.

Partnering crops with root-associated microbes for soil health and agricultural sustainability

Increasing global demand for food presents a significant challenge to maintaining soil health and sustainable production of agricultural crops. As plant root-associated microbial fitness is greatly impacted by community growth, development, and nutrient acquisition, the cultivation of functional assembly of root-associated microbes may provide solutions for achieving food security while maintaining healthy soils. Here, we propose a four-part strategy to promote soil health and agricultural productivity by partnering crops with root-associated microbes.

Tuning Surface Molecular Design of Porous Carbon for Blue Energy Harvesting

Capacitive mixing is a promising blue energy technology due to its membrane-free electricity generation and long electrode life cycle.However,because of limited performance,existing systems do not lend themselves to practical implementation.Although it is a crucial factor directly influencing electrode behavior,surface chemistry has largely been overlooked in capacitive mixing.Here,we show that manipulating surface functionalization alone can tune the responses of electrodes to produce a high voltage rise without altering the pore structure of the electrodes.Our findings reveal that the spontaneous electrode potential of a surface-modified carbon electrode shifts negatively proportional to the surface charge due to the surface groups,which explains why and how manipulating the surface chemistry can improve the power generation capacity.

Ignition processes and characteristics of charring conductive polymers with a cavity geometry in precombustion chamber for applications in micro/nano satellite hybrid rocket motors

The arc ignition system based on charring polymers has advantages of simple structure,low ignition power consumption and multiple ignitions,which bringing it broadly application prospect in hybrid propulsion system of micro/nano satellite.However,charring polymers alone need a relatively high input voltage to achieve pyrolysis and ignition,which increases the burden and cost of the power system of micro/nano satellite in practical application.Adding conductive substance into charring polymers can effectively decrease the conducting voltage which can realize low voltage and low power consumption repeated ignition of arc ignition system.In this paper,a charring conductive polymer ignition grain with a cavity geometry in precombustion chamber,which is composed of PLA and multiwall carbon nanotubes(MWCNT)was proposed.The detailed ignition processes were analyzed and two different ignition mechanisms in the cavity of charring conductive polymers were revealed.The ignition characteristics of charring conductive polymers were also investigated at different input voltages,ignition grain structures,ignition locations and injection schemes in a visual ignition combustor.The results demonstrated that the ignition delay and external energy required for ignition were inversely correlated with the voltages applied to ignition grain.Moreover,the incremental depth of cavity shortened the ignition delay and external energy required for ignition while accelerated the propagation of flame.As the depth of cavity increased from 2 to 6 mm(at 50 V),the time of flame propagating out of ignition grain changed from 235.6 to 108 ms,and values of mean ignition delay time and mean external energy required for ignition decreased from 462.8 to 320 ms and 16.2 to 10.75 J,respectively.The rear side of the cavity was the ideal ignition position which had a shorter ignition delay and a faster flame propagation speed in comparison to other ignition positions.Compared to direct injection scheme,swirling injection provided a more favorable flow field

Self-propelled particles are commonly found in a large number of planktonic organisms such as bacteria,fungi,and algae in nature,and researchers have taken a long interest in exploring their swimming mechanisms for more than a century.Especially in the past 20 years,with the development of computational fluid dynamics and flow display technology,as well as the need for the design of synthetic self-propelled particles and micro-swimming devices,self-propelled particles have become the forefront and hotspot of current research in the field of fluid mechanics.This paper first introduces the swimming characteristics of common self-propelled particles,leading to a classic“squirmer”type self-propelled particle model.On this basis,a systematic introduction and summary of the theoretical and numerical simulation research of“squirmer”will be conducted.Finally,the main challenges and opportunities faced by the current research will be summarized.

Migration mechanism and risk assessment of perand polyfluoroalkyl substances in the Ya'Er Lake oxidation pond area,China

The migration mechanisms,sources,and environmental risks of 29 legacy and emerging perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl species present in an oxidation pond(Ya'Er Lake)were investigated for treating sewage based on the analysis of their occurrence and distribution.The concentration of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)in pond area was between0.30 and 63.2 ng/g dw(dry weight),with the overall average concentration of 8.00 ng/g dw.Notably,the PFAS concentrations in the surface sediments near the sewage outlet in Pond-1(50.2 ng/g dw)and Pond-5(average 15.1 ng/g dw)were 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than those in other areas.In general,the legacy PFAS,i.e.,perfluorooctane sulfonic acid was considered to be the major pollutant in the polluted area,on average,accounting for 73.0%of the total concentration of PFAS pollutants.By evaluating the regional distribution of different PFAS homologs,the short-chain PFAS pollutants with lower K_(ow)were found to migrate farther in both horizontal and vertical directions.The sewage outlets in Pond-1 and Pond-5are the main pollution sources in polluted area and the emerging PFAS pollutants in Pond-5have replaced the legacy PFAS pollutants as the main pollutants.Based on positive matrix factorization analysis,three main industrial sources of PFAS pollutants in the study area were identified:protective coating,fire-fighting,and food packaging sources.Moreover,the environmental risk assessment results showed that most study areas exhibited medium environmental risk(0.01≤Risk quotient(RQ)<1),indicating that the ecological environment risks in this area need further attention.

In this work,we give some criteria of the weakly compact sets and a representation theorem of Riesz's type in Musielak sequence spaces using the ideas and techniques of sequence spaces and Musielak function.Finally,as an immediate consequence of the criteria considered in this paper,the criteria of the weakly compact sets of Orlicz sequence spaces are deduced.

The effect of bladder function on the efficacy of transurethral prostatectomy in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia:a retrospective,single-center study

We investigated the impact and predictive value of bladder function in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)on the efficacy of transurethral prostatectomy.Symptomatic,imaging,and urodynamic data of patients who underwent transurethral prostatectomy at West China Hospital of Sichuan University(Chengdu,China)from July 2019 to December 2021 were collected.Follow-up data included the quality of life(QoL),International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS),and IPSS storage and voiding(IPSS-s and IPSS-v).Moreover,urinary creatinine(Cr),nerve growth factor(NGF),brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),and prostaglandin estradiol(PGE2)were measured in 30 patients with BPH and 30 healthy participants.Perioperative indicators were determined by subgroup analyses and receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis.Among the 313 patients with BPH included,patients with severe micturition problems had more improvements but higher micturition grades postoperatively than those with moderate symptoms.Similarly,good bladder sensation,compliance,and detrusor contractility(Dc)were predictors of low postoperative IPSS and QoL.The urinary concentrations of BDNF/Cr,NGF/Cr,and PGE2/Cr in patients were significantly higher than those in healthy participants(all P
