Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment on postoperative pain in patients with degenerative lumbar spine disease, and explored the relationship between the postoperative analgesic effect of acupuncture and the sensation of acupuncture experienced by the ***: This retrospective study analyzed the medical records of 97 patients who had undergone an operation by the same surgeon due to degenerative lumbar disease. These patients were divided into acupuncture group(n = 32), patient-controlled analgesia(PCA) group(n = 27), and oral analgesia group(n = 38) according to the different postoperative analgesic methods. During their hospitalization, patients completed daily evaluations of their pain using a visual analogue scale(VAS), and injection times of supplemental meperidine were recorded. Also, the Chinese version of the Massachusetts General Hospital Acupuncture Sensation Scale(C-MASS) was used in the acupuncture ***: Each of the three treatment groups showed significant reductions in postoperative pain, as shown by reduced VAS scores. The acupuncture group, however, had less rebound pain(P < 0.05) than the other two groups. Both the acupuncture and PCA groups experienced acute analgesic effects that were superior to those in the oral analgesia group. In addition, the higher the C-MASS index on the second day after surgery, the lower the VAS score on the fourth day after surgery. There was also a significant difference in the“dull pain” in the acupuncture ***: The results demonstrated that acupuncture was beneficial for postoperative pain and discomfort after simple surgery for degenerative spinal disease. It is worth noting that there was a disproportionate relevance between the patient’s acupuncture sensation and the improvement of pain VAS score.

Hepatic hemodynamic changes during liver transplantation: A review

Liver transplantation is performed in the recent decades with great improvements not only technically but also conceptually. However, there is still lack of consensus about the optimal hemodynamic characteristics during liver transplantation. The representative hemodynamic parameters include portal vein pressure, portal vein flow, and hepatic venous pressure gradient; however, there are still others potential valuable parameters, such as total liver inflow and hepatic artery flow. All the parameters are correlated closely and some internal modulating mechanisms, like hepatic arterial buffer response, occur to maintain stable hepatic inflow. To distinguish the unique importance of each hepatic and systemic parameter in different states during liver transplantation, we reviewed the published data and also conducted two transplant cases with different surgical strategies applied to achieve ideal portal inflow and pressure.

Non-pulmonary allergic diseases and inflammatory bowel disease: A qualitative review

While the etiological underpinnings of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) are highly complex, it has been not-ed that both clinical and pathophysiological similarities exist between IBD and both asthma and non-pulmonary allergic phenomena. In this review, several key points on common biomarkers, pathophysiology, clinical manifesta-tions and nutritional and probiotic interventions for both IBD and non-pulmonary allergic diseases are *** and mast cell activity show common behav-iors in both IBD and in certain allergic disorders. IgE also represents a key immunoglobulin involved in both IBD and in certain allergic pathologies, though these links require further study. Probiotics remain a critically important intervention for both IBD subtypes as well as multiple allergic phenomena. Linked clinical phenomena, especially sinonasal disease and IBD, are discussed. In addition, nutritional interventions remain an underuti-lized and promising therapy for modification of both al-lergic disorders and IBD. Recommending new mothers breastfeed their infants, and increasing the duration of breastfeeding may also help prevent both IBD and al-lergic diseases, but requires more investigation. While much remains to be discovered, it is clear that non-pulmonary allergic phenomena are connected to IBD in a myriad number of ways and that the discovery of com-mon immunological pathways may usher in an era of vastly improved treatments for patients.

Long-term Effects of Antihypertensive Drug Use and New-onset Osteoporotic Fracture in Elderly Patients： A Population-based Longitudinal Cohort Study

Background： Antihypertensive drugs have been linked to new-onset osteoporotic fracture （NOF）, and different classes of antihypertensive drugs may alter the risk for the development of NOF; however, the classic effect of different antihypertensive drugs on the development of NOF in the elderly has not been well studied during long-term follow-up. Methods： In this study, we investigated the association between different classic antihypertensives and the development of NOF in the elderly. This was a longitudinal cohort study performed using data from claim forms submitted to the Taiwan Bureau of National Health Insurance in Central Taiwan, China including case patients with NOF aged 65–80 years from January 2002 to December 2012 and non-NOF controls. Prescriptions for antihypertensives before the index date were retrieved from a prescription database. We estimated the hazard ratios （HR s） of NOF associated with antihypertensive use. Non-NOF controls served as the reference group. Results： A total of 128 patients with NOF were identified from among 1144 patients with hypertension during the study period. The risk of NOF after adjusting age, sex, comorbidities, and concurrent medications was higher among the users of angiotensin-converting enzyme （ACE） inhibitors （HR, 1.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01–2.66） than among nonusers. Patients who took calcium channel blockers （CCBs）（HR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.49–0.99） were at a lower risk of developing NOF than nonusers. Loop diuretics, thiazide diuretics, angiotensin receptor blocker, beta-blocker, and alpha-blocker were not associated with the risk of NOF. Conclusions： Elderly with hypertension who take CCBs are at a lower risk of NOF and that the use of ACE inhibitors was associated with a significantly increased risk of developing NOF during the 11-year follow-up.

The Covalent Binding of Genistein to the Non-prosthetic-heme-moiety of Bovine Lactoperoxidase Leads to Enzymatic Inactivation

Objective Genistein, a major soy isoflavone metabolite （SIF）, inactivates oxidation activity of bovine lactoperoxidase （LPO）. Modification of the heme moiety of LPO by nitrogen-containing compounds has been shown to inactivate LPO. In contrast, SIF mediated inactivation of LPO does not involve a heme modification and the mechanism of SIF inhibition is poorly understood. Methods After inactivation of LPO by genistein in the presence of H202, trypsin-digested LPO peptide fragments were collected and analyzed by MALDI-TOF-MS to characterize the chemical binding of genistein（s） to LPO. Results The heme moiety of LPO was not modified by genistein. A covalent binding study showed that 3H-genistein bound to LPO with a ratio of ~12 to 1. After HPLC analysis and peak collection, trypsin-digested peptide fragments were analyzed by MALDI-TOF-MS. The 3H-genistein co-eluted peptide fragments （RT=24 min） were putatively identified as 1991VGYLDEEGVLDQNR214 with two bound genistein molecules or a genistein dimer （2 259 Da）, 486TPDNIDIWlGGNAEPMVER504 with two bound genistein molecules or a genistein dimer （2 663 Da）, and 161ARWLPAEYEDGLALPFGWTQR182 with three bound genistein molecules or a genistein trimer （3 060 Da）. The fragment with a mass of 2 792 Da （RT=36 min） was identified as 132CDENSPYR139 with three genistein molecules or a genistein trimer. Conclusions The results suggest that LPO was inactivated by irreversible covalent binding of genistein or genistein polymers to particular peptide fragments constituting regions of the outward domain. No genistein interaction with the prosthetic heme moiety of LPO was observed.

Growth behavior of electroless copper on silicon substrate

The growth behavior containing deposit morphology, growth rate, activation energy, and growth mechanism of copper on silicon substrate, especially at the initial stage, in the electroless plating process was studied. Copper was deposited on the surface of the silicon substrate in an electloless plating bath containing formalin （CH2O 37vol%） as a reducing agent at a pH value of 12.5 and a temperature of 50-75℃. The copper deposit was characterized using a field emission scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The results showed that after the activation process, nanoscale Pd particles were distributed evenly on the surface of the silicon; in the deposition process, copper first nucleated at locations not only near the Pd particles but also between the Pd particles; the growth rate of electroless Cu ranged from 0.517 nm/s at 50℃ to 1.929 nm/s at 75℃. The activation energy of electroless Cu on Si was 52.97 kJ/mol.

Quantile Regression Based on Semi-Competing Risks Data

This paper considers quantile regression analysis based on semi-competing risks data in which a non-terminal event may be dependently censored by a terminal event. The major interest is the covariate effects on the quantile of the non-terminal event time. Dependent censoring is handled by assuming that the joint distribution of the two event times follows a parametric copula model with unspecified marginal distributions. The technique of inverse probability weighting (IPW) is adopted to adjust for the selection bias. Large-sample properties of the proposed estimator are derived and a model diagnostic procedure is developed to check the adequacy of the model assumption. Simulation results show that the proposed estimator performs well. For illustrative purposes, our method is applied to analyze the bone marrow transplant data in [1].

Ocular hypertension and severe intraocular pressure elevation after posterior subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide for various diseases

AIM:To evaluate and compare the incidences of ocular hyper tension and severe intraocular pressure(IOP)elevation after posterior subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide(PSTA)for various ***:Totally 179 eyes that had received PSTA for diabetic macular edema(n=108),pseudophakic cystoid macular edema(n=20),branch retinal vein occlusion(n=16),central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO,n=14),choroidal neovascularization(n=14)or noninfectious uveitis(n=7)were retrospectively *** primary outcomes included ocular hypertension defined as an IOP>21 mm Hg,and severe IOP elevation defined as a rise of 10 mm Hg or more in IOP compared with *** regression models were used to analyze the hazard ratios(HRs)among different ***:After PSTA,the mean IOPs from month 1 to month 6 all significantly increased(P<0.05).Ocular hypertension occurred in 30.7%of eyes(median time:8 wk),and severe IOP elevation occurred in 16.2%of eyes(median time:9 wk).Patients receiving PSTA for CRVO or uveitis had a significantly higher risk for ocular hypertension(HR=3.049,P=0.004 for CRVO;HR=5.464,P=0.019 for uveitis)and severe IOP elevation(HR=2.913,P=0.034 for CRVO;HR=7.650,P=0.009 for uveitis).CONCLUSION:IOP significantly increases within 6 mo after PSTA,with the onset of ocular hypertension happening mostly at 2 to 3 *** of CRVO or noninfectious uveitis have a higher risk of ocular hypertension or severe IOP elevation after PSTA and should be monitored for IOP more carefully.

Effect of Selenium on Aflatoxin Hepatocarcinogenesis in the Rat

The effects of selenium (Na_2SeO_3) on aflatoxin B_1 (AFB_1)-induced hepatic neoplasia were studied in the rat. Putative preneoplastic foci and nodules composed of basophilic, eosinophilic, and clear cells developed early. Basophilic foci were seen first; in the later stages basophilic and eosinophilic nodules predominated. At each stage the AFB_1 + Se groups showed fewer and smaller foci and nodules than the AFB_1 -Se group. The number of foci in the AFB_1 + 3 ppm Se group and their mean area were smaller than those in the 6 ppm Se + AFB_1 group. At the end of the experiment hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was found in 11/18 rats (61%) of the AFB_1-Se group. HCC was not found in either of the groups given AFB_1 +Se. We conclude that Se had an inhibitory effect on the initiation and promotion stages of AFB_1-induced preneoplastic foci and nodules. Se also prevented progression of these nodules to HCC even after cessation of AFB_1 administration. The inhibitory effect of Se at 3 ppm was greater than at 6 ppm. Magnesium lithospermate B possesses inhibitory activity on Na+,K+-ATPase and neuroprotective effects against ischemic stroke

Aim:To examine if magnesium lithospermate B （MLB） extracted from Danshen,thedried roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza,may act as an active component responsible forthe cardiac therapeutic effect of this traditional Chinese herb via the same molecu-lar mechanism triggered by cardiac glycosides,such as ouabain and ***,we wanted to test if MLB may provide neuroprotection againstischemic stroke as observed for cardiac ***:Similarity in thechemical structure and molecular configuration between MLB and ouabain *** inhibition potency of MLB and ouabain on Na+,K+-ATPase activ-ity of a commercial product,as well as in purified membrane fractions from rat brainand heart tissues,was examined and *** effect of MLBagainst ischemic stroke was also evaluated using a cortical brain slice-basedassay ***:Dose-dependent inhibition on the commercial Na+,K+-ATPase equivalent to that for ouabain was observed for MLB of approximatelyhalf dosage by *** relative potency of ouabain and MLB was alsoobserved for their inhibition on Na+,K+-ATPase activity of plasma membranepurified from rat tissues,although these 2 inhibitors exhibited somewhat lowercompetence in these crude *** ischemic gerbil brains,post-treatment withMLB significantly reduced the infarct size,visualized by 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazoliumchloride staining,by approximately 55% when compared with the control ***:These results evidently suggest that the cardiac therapeutic effect ofDanshen should be at least partly attributed to the effective inhibition of Na+,K+-ATPase by MLB,and that MLB provides anti-ischemic neuroprotection in gerbilssubjected to focal ischemia and reperfusion.
