Vitamin D for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is ranked fi fth among cancer-related deaths worldwide with a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. Currently, surgery is the only effective therapy. However, most patients are diagnosed in the late stage and are not suitable for receiving curative surgery. Moreover, pancreatic cancer doesn't respond well to traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, leaving little effective treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer cases. 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1α,25(OH)2D3], the biologically active form of vitamin D3, was originally identifi ed during studies of calcium and bone metabolism, though it is now recognized that it exerts biological effects in almost every tissue in the body. Abundant evidence has shown that 1α,25(OH)2D3 has antiproliferative, apoptotic, pro-differentiation and antiangiogensis effects in many types of cancer cells in vivo and in vitro, including breast, prostate, and colon. Similarly, the antitumor growth effect of 1α,25(OH)2D3 on pancreatic cells has been demonstrated. The clinical use of 1α,25(OH)2D3 is impeded by the lethal side effects of hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. Therefore, 1α,25(OH)2D3 analogs, which are either equipotent or more potent than 1α,25(OH)2D3 in inhibiting tumor cell growth but with fewer hypercalcemic and hypercalciuric side effects, have been developed for the treatment of different cancers. Recently, a pre-clinical study demonstrated that a less calcemic analog of 1α,25(OH)2D3, 19-nor-1α,25(OH)2D2 (Paricalcitol), is effective in inhibiting tumor growth in vitro and in vivo , via upregulation of p21 and p27 tumor suppressor genes. Studies on the anti-tumor effects of a more potent analog of Paricalcitol are underway.1α,25(OH)2D3 and its analogs are potentially attractive novel therapies for pancreatic cancer.

A Low Complexity Algorithm for Subcarrier-and-Bit Allocation in OFDMA-Based LTE Systems

In this paper, we propose optimum and sub-optimum resource allocation and opportunistic scheduling solutions for orthogonal frequency division multiple access （OFDMA）-based multicellular systems. The applicability, complexity, and performance of the proposed algorithms are analyzed and numerically evaluated. In the initial setup, the fractional frequency reuse （FFR） technique for inter-cell interference cancellation is applied to classify the users into two groups, namely interior and exterior users. Adaptive modulation is then employed according to the channel state information （CSI） of each user to meet the symbol error rate （SER） requirement. There then, we develop subcarrier-and-bit allocation method, which maximizes the total system throughput subject to the constraints that each user has a minimum data rate requirement. The algorithm to achieve the optimum solution requires high computational complexity which hinders it from practicability. Toward this suboptimum method with the reduced to the order of O（NIO, the total number of subcarriers end, we complexity propose a extensively where N and K denote and users, respectively. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm approaches the optimum solution, yet it enjoys the features of simplicity, dynamic cell configuration, adaptive subearrier-and-bit allocation, and spectral efficiency.

Performance Investigation of Capillary Tubes for Machine Tool Coolers Retrofitted with HFC-407C Refrigerant

The machine tool coolers are the best managers of coolant temperature in avoiding the deviation of spindle centerline for machine tools. However, the machine coolers are facing the compressed schedule to phase out the HCFC （hydro-chloro-floro-carbon） refrigerant and little attention has been paid to comparative study on sizing capillary tube for retrofitted HFC （hydro-floro-carbon） refrigerant. In this paper, the adiabatic flow in capillary tube is analyzed and modeled for retrofitting of HFC-407C refrigerant in a machine tool cooler system. A computer code including determining the length of sub-cooled flow region and the two phase region of capillary tube is developed. Comparative study of HCFC-22 and HFC-407C in a capillary tube is derived and conducted to simplify the traditional trial-and-error method of predicting the length of capillary tubes. Besides, experimental investigation is carried out by field tests to verify the simulation model and cooling performance of the machine tool cooler system. The results from the experiments reveal that the numerical model provides an effective approach to determine the performance data of capillary tube specific for retrofitting a HFC-407C machine tool cooler. The developed machine tool cooler system is not only directly compatible with new HFC-407C refrigerant, but can also perform a cost-effective temperature control specific for industrial machines.

A 3D multi-field element for simulating the electromechanical coupling behavior of dielectric elastomers

We propose a multi-field implicit finite element method for analyzing the electromechanical behavior of dielectric elastomers. This method is based on a four-field variational principle, which includes displacement and electric potential for the electromechanical coupling analysis, and additional independent fields to address the incompressible constraint of the hyperelastic material. Linearization of the variational form and finite element discretization are adopted for the numerical implementation. A general FEM program framework is devel- oped using C＋＋ based on the open-source finite element library *** to implement this proposed algorithm. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy, convergence properties, mesh-independence properties, and scalability of this method. We also use the method for eigenvalue analysis of a dielectric elastomer actuator subject to electromechanical loadings. Our finite element implementation is available as an online supplementary material.

We consider a class of models with extra complex scalars that are charged under both the Standard Model and a hidden strongly coupled S U(N)h gauge sector and discuss the seenarios in which the new scalars are identified as the messenger fields that mediate the spontaneously broken supersymmetries from the hidden sector to the visible *** new scalars are embedded into 5-plets and 10-plets of an S(/(5)v gauge group that potentially unifies the Standard Model gauge *** Higgs bosons remain as elementary *** the supersymmetrized version of this class of models,vector-like fermions whose left-handed components are superpartners of the new scalars are *** to the hidden strong force,the new low-energy scalars hadronize before decaying and thus evade the common direct searches of the supersymmetric *** can be seen as a gauge mediation seenario with the scalar messenger fields forming low-energy bound *** also discuss the possibility that in the tower of bound states formed under hidden strong dynamics(of at least the TeV scale),there exist a dark matter candidate and the collider signatures(***,diboson,or dijet)of models that may show up in the near future.

BACKGROUND Chondrosarcoma,a cartilage matrix producing tumor,is the second most commonly observed primary bone tumor after osteosarcoma,accounting for 15%of all chest wall *** herein report the case of a patient with chondrosarcoma of the sternum and our management of the chest wall defects that presented following radical tumor *** SUMMARY A 31-year-old patient presented to our hospital with dull pain and a protruding mass overlying the chest for 3 *** presence of nocturnal pain and mass size progression was reported,as were overhead arm elevation-related *** tomography showed a focal osteoblastic mass in the sternum with bony exostosis and adjacent soft tissue *** emission tomography-computed tomography revealed hypermetabolic activity with a mass located over the upper *** resonance imaging showed a focal illdefined bony mass of the sternum with cortical destruction and periosteal *** biopsy showed a consistent result with chondrosarcoma with immunohistochemical positivity for S100 and focal positivity for *** grade II chondrosarcoma diagnosis was confirmed by postoperative *** patient underwent radical tumor resection and chest wall reconstruction with a locking plate and cement *** patient was discharged 1 wk after surgery without any *** the 1-year follow-up,there was no local recurrence on *** functional scores,including Constant Score,Nottingham Clavicle Score,and Oxford Shoulder Score,showed the absence of pain in the performance of daily activities or substantial functional *** The diagnosis of chondrosarcoma must be considered when chest wall tumors are *** surgical reconstructive materials,with a locking plate and cement spacer,used in our study are cost-effective and readily-available for the sternum defect.
