Biodegradable hydrogels are promising biomaterials for use in controlled-release systems for skin tissue regeneration. Controlled delivery systems constitute an important aspect of tissue engineering because they can modulate various physiological responses, including early immune response, tissue remodeling, and cell proliferation and maturation in the wound-healing process. Hydrogels composed of various biomaterials have been developed to overcome the limitations of conventional drug- or protein-delivery systems, such as limited targeting ability, low stability, and the induction of drug resistance. Hydrogels based on keratin, a natural polymer extracted from human hair, can provide adequate cell support and control homeostasis. Consequently, they can be applied for skin tissue engineering. In this study, we prepared degradable, tunable, and biocompatible hydrogels for controllable protein delivery. We synthesized keratin-fibrinogen (KER-FBG) by the chemical coupling reaction and prepared hydrogels through polymerization with thrombin. The structures and morphologies of the KER-FBG hydrogels were confirmed. Furthermore, the mechanical properties, swelling ratio, degradation, release behavior, and biocompatibility were investigated. The KER-FBG hydrogels presented promising biological performance, indicating that the material is suitable as a controlled protein delivery carrier.

Are human dental papilla-derived stem cell and human brain-derived neural stem cell transplantations suitable for treatment of Parkinson’s disease?

Transplantation of neural stem cells has been reported as a possible approach for replacing impaired dopaminergic neurons. In this study, we tested the efficacy of early-stage human dental papilla-derived stem cells and human brain-derived neural stem cells in rat models of 6-hydroxydopamine-induced Parkinson＇s disease. Rats received a unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into right medial forebrain bundle, followed 3 weeks later by injections of PBS, early-stage human dental papilla-derived stem cells, or human brain-derived neural stem cells into the ipsilateral striatum. All of the rats in the human dental papilla-derived stem cell group died from tumor formation at around 2 weeks following cell transplantation. Postmortem examinations revealed homogeneous malignant tumors in the striatum of the human dental papilla-derived stem cell group. Stepping tests revealed that human brain-derived neural stem cell transplantation did not improve motor dysfunction. In apomorphine-induced rotation tests, neither the human brain-derived neural stem cell group nor the control groups （PBS injection） demonstrated significant changes. Glucose metabolism in the lesioned side of striatum was reduced by human brain-derived neural stem cell transplantation. [18F]-FP-CIT PET scans in the striatum did not demonstrate a significant increase in the human brain-derived neural stem cell group. Tyrosine hydroxylase （dopaminergic neuronal marker） staining and G protein-activated inward rectifier potassium channel 2 （A9 dopaminergic neuronal marker） were positive in the lesioned side of striatum in the human brain-derived neural stem cell group. The use of early-stage human dental papilla-derived stern cells confirmed its tendency to form tumors. Human brain-derived neural stem cells could be partially differentiated into dopaminergic neurons, but they did not secrete dopamine.

Carbon steel slag as cementitious material for self-consolidating concrete

This study deals with the recycling of carbon steel slag (CSS) to produce self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Since the chemical composition of CSS is similar to that of Portland cement or blast furnace slag (BFS), it is expected to behave similarly. In the current study, the pozzolanic activity index of CSS is examined. Furthermore, the use of CSS as a pozzolanic material to partially replace Portland cement in the production of SCC is tested. We designed concrete mixtures with different water-tocementitious material ratios (w/cm) keeping water and superplasticizer (SP) contents constant. Results showed that the design and performance of all the concrete mixtures used in this investigation were comparable to those of SCC and high performance concrete (HPC). However, compared to ordinary plain concrete (OPC), the additional CSS content increases the setting time. In the CSS mixtures set for 90 d, compressive strengths of 86%, 134% and 121% were attained as compared to the control concrete; the corresponding w/cm ratios were 0.28, 0.32 and 0.40, respectively. Verifying the soundness of the SCC for meeting the criteria for HPC, the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of CSS was found to be comparable to that of ordinary concrete. In conclusion, the recycling of CSS can be advantageously employed in the production of SCC.

Development of high performance and high strength heavy concrete for radiation shielding structures

Heavy concrete currently used for construction contains special materials that are expensive and difficult to work *** study replaced natural aggregate（stones） in concrete with round steel balls,which are inexpensive and easily *** diameters of the steel balls were 0.5 and 1 cm,and their density was 7.8 kg/*** packing mixture methods were used to produce heavy concrete with densities of 3500 and 5000 kg/*** various properties of this concrete were tested according to the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials（ASTM）.The results indicated that the construction slump of the concrete could reach 260-280 mm and its slump flow could reach 610-710 *** important,its compressive strength could reach 8848 *** results will significantly alter traditional construction methods that use heavy concrete and enhance innovative ideas for structural design.

Quantum logic operations on two distant atoms trapped in two optical-fibre-connected cavities

Based on the coupling of two distant three-level atoms in two separate optical cavities connected with two optical fibres, schemes on the generation of several two-qubit logic gates are discussed under the conditions of △ = δ- 2v cos πk/2 〉〉 g/2 and v-g. Discussion and analysis of the fidelity, gate time and experimental setups show that our schemes are feasible with current optical cavity, atomic trap and optical fibre techniques. Moreover, the atom-cavityfibre coupling can be used to generate an N-qubit nonlocal entanglement and transfer quantum information among N distant atoms by arranging N atom cavity assemblages in a line and connecting each two adjacent cavities with two optical fibres.

Dynamic Fuzzy Controlled RWA Algorithm for IP/GMPLS over WDM Networks

This paper proposes a dynamic RWA scheme using fuzzy logic control on IP/GMPLS over WDM networks to achieve the best quality of network transmission. The proposed algorithm dynamically allocates network resources and reserves partial bandwidth based on the current network status, which includes the request bandwidth, average utilization for each wavelength and its coefficient of variance （C.V.） of data traffic, to determine whether the connection can be set tip. Five fuzzy sets for request bandwidth, average rate and C.V. of data traffic are used to divide the variable space： very large （LP）, large （SP）, normal （ZE）, small （SN）, and very small （LN）. Setting the fuzzy limit is a key part in the proposed algorithm. The simulation of scenarios in this paper has two steps. In the first step, the adaptive fuzzy limits are evaluated based on average transmission cost pertaining to ten network statuses. The second step is to compare the proposed algorithm with periodic measurement of traffic （PMT） in ATM networks in six network situations to show that the proposed FC-RWA algorithm can provide better network transmission.

Vitreous haemorrhage:a population-based study of the incidence and risk factors in Taiwan

AIM：To report the epidemiology and incidence of vitreous hemorrhage and to evaluate risk factors for patients with vitreous hemorrhage（VH）in ***：A retrospective population-based *** a sample of one million subjects from all enrollees of the Taiwan Health Insurance programme. All data were obtained from the Taiwan Health Insurance Research Database,which contained patient sex,date of birth,all records of clinical visits and hospitalizations,and diagnosis codes as included in the International Classification of Diseases,Ninth Revision,Clinical Modification（ICD-9-CM）. The main outcome measures were the incidence and risk factors of ***：From 2001 to 2010,the database claim 4379 newly diagnosed cases were identified with VH. The average incidence of VH in Taiwan was 4.8 cases per ten-thousand person-years generally and increased with time especially in subjects who aged between 40 and 59 y and when the VH was associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathies or retinal vein occlusions. A de-finitely upward trends in the incidence of VH from 2001 to 2010 were noted（P-value for increasing trend 〈0.001）. Univariate Cox＇s regression analysis pointed out that older age（for 40-59,P〈0.001,HR=9.39; for ≥60,P〈0.001,HR=11.39）,male gender（P=0.03,HR=1.07）and subjects who had been prescribed anti-coagulation drug included aspirin,warfarinand clopidogrel（P〈0.001,HR=2.20）were significant risk factors for suffering from ***：The incidence of VH is estimated being 4.8 cases per 10 000 person-years in Taiwan. Age,male gender and having been prescribed anti-coagulation drugs are associated with the incidence of VH.

Multiple bowel intussusceptions from metastatic localized malignant pleural mesothelioma:A case report

Localized malignant pleural mesothelioma (LMPM) is a rare occurrence, and gastrointestinal intra-luminal metastases have not previously been reported. Herein, we report a patient with LMPM who presented with a local recurrence 10 mo after initial en bloc surgical resection. Abdominal computed tomography was performed for intractable, vague abdominal pain with episodic vomiting, which showed a "target sign" over the left lower quadrant. Laparotomy revealed several intra-luminal metastatic tumors in the small intestine and colon and a segmental resection of metastatic lesions was performed. Unfortunately, the patient died of sepsis despite successful surgical intervention. Though local recurrence is more frequent in LMPM, the possibility of distant metastasis should not be ignored in patients with non-specifi c abdominal pain.
