Effect of artificial natural light on the development of myopia among primary school-age children in China:a three-year longitudinal study

AIM:To assess the efficacy of artificial natural light in preventing incident myopia in primary school-age ***:This is a prospective,randomized control,intervention study.A total of 1840 students from 39 classes in 4 primary schools in Foshan participated in this *** whole randomization method was adopted to include classes as a group according to 1:1 randomized *** in the control group were illuminated by usual light,and classrooms in the intervention group were illuminated by artificial natural *** students received uncorrected visual acuity and best-corrected visual acuity measurement,non-cycloplegic autorefraction,ocular biometric examination,slit lamp and strabismus ***-year follow-up,the students underwent same *** was defined as spherical equivalent refraction≤-0.50 D and uncorrected visual acuity<20/***:There were 894 students in the control group and 946 students in the intervention group with a mean±SD age of 7.50±*** three-year cumulative incidence rate of myopia was 26.4%(207 incident cases among 784 eligible participants at baseline)in the control group and 21.2%(164 incident cases among 774 eligible participants at baseline)in the intervention group[difference of 5.2%(95%CI,3.7%to 10.1%);P=0.035].There was also a significant difference in the three-year change in spherical equivalent refraction for the control group(-0.81 D)compared with the intervention group[-0.63 D;difference of 0.18 D(95%CI,0.08 to 0.28 D);P<0.001].Elongation of axial length was significantly different between in the control group(0.77 mm)and the intervention group[0.72 mm;difference of 0.05 mm(95%CI,0.01 to 0.09 mm);P=0.003].CONCLUSION:Artificial natural light in the classroom of primary schools can result in reducing incidence rate of myopia during a period of three years.

Design and Gait Planning of a Worm-inspired Metameric Robot for Pipe Crawling

The earthworm has been attracted much attention in the research and development of biomimetic robots due to their unique locomotion mechanism,compact structure,and small motion *** paper presents a new design and prototype of a worm-inspired metameric robot with a movement pattern similar to that of *** robot consists of multiple telescopic modules connected in series through joint *** telescopic module mimics the contraction and elongation motion modes of the earthworm segments.A kinematic and dynamic analysis is conducted on the telescopic module,and an input torque calculation method is provided to ensure sufficient friction between the robot and the pipe *** gait modes of the prototype robot for straight and turning locomotion are introduced,and these modes are extended to robots constructed by different numbers of telescopic *** addition,a method is proposed to increase the friction between the robot and the pipe wall in the aforementioned gait modes without changing the robot structure,thereby improving the robot’s motion ability in *** theoretical model of gait modes has also been validated through gait *** findings of this paper would provide a useful basis for the design,modeling,and control of future worm inspired robots.

Dynamic modeling and parameter identification of a gun saddle ring

In this study,a theoretical nonlinear dynamic model was established for a saddle ring based on a dynamic force analysis of the launching process and the structure according to contact-impact *** ADAMS software was used to build a parameterized dynamic model of the saddle ring.A parameter identification method for the ring was proposed based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm.A loading test was designed and performed several times at different elevation *** response histories of the saddle ring with different loads were then *** parameters of the saddle ring dynamic model were identified from statistics generated at a 500 elevation angle to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed *** actual loading history of the ring at a 70°elevation angle was taken as the model *** response histories of the ring under these working conditions were obtained through a *** simulation results agreed with the actual ***,the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed dynamic model were verified,and it provides an effective method for modeling saddle rings.

Framework for Sustainable Use of Medicinal Plants in China

China is the birth-place of Traditional Chines Medicine(TCM) and has a rich diversity of medicinal plant resources. With the rapid increase in consumer demands for crude drugs and natural health products, many medicinal plant species are threatened with extinction from overexploitation and habitat destruction. To ensure the sustainable use of medicinal plant resources,we discuss in this article,a conservation framework consisting of conservation strategies, cultivation practices and various technologies. Conservation strategies include establishing in-situ and ex-situ conservation centers, setting up government policies and regulations, establishing methods for resource surveying and trade monitoring and establishing and enforcing Good Agricultural Practices(GAP).In terms of technologies,we use a remote multi-level sensing system and DNA barcoding technologies as examples to demonstrate their roles in the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plant resources in China

Molecular investigation into the transformation of recalcitrant dissolved organic sulfur in refinery sour water during stripping process

Refinery sour water primarily originates from the tops of towers in various units and coker condensate,and cannot be discharged directly to a wastewater treatment plant due to high levels of chemical oxygen demand(COD)and organic sulfur *** after the recovery of H_(2)S from the sour water by the stripping process,the effluent still contains a high concentration of dissolved organic sulfur(DOS),which can have a huge bad *** chemical composition of dissolved organic matter(DOM)in refinery wastewater has been extensively studied,the investigation of recalcitrant DOS from sour waters remains *** the present study,chemical composition of sour water DOMs(especially DOS)was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy(excitation-emission matrix,EEM)and mass spectrometry,including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)and high-resolution Orbitrap *** GC-MS and EEM results showed that volatile and low-aromaticity compounds were effectively removed during the stripping process,while compounds with high hydrophilicity and humification degree were found to be more *** Orbitrap MS results showed that weak-polar oxygenated sulfur compounds were easier to be removed than oxygenated ***,the effluent still contained significant amounts of sulfur-containing compounds with multiple sulfur atoms,particularly in the form of highly unsaturated and aromatic *** Orbitrap MS/MS results of CHOS-containing compounds from the effluent indicate that the sulfur atoms may exist as sulfonates,disulfide bonds,*** the composition and structure of sour water DOS is crucial for the development of effective treatment processes that can target polysulfide compounds and minimize their impact on the environment.

The solar-driven reduction of CO_(2) into valuable products is a promising method to alleviate global environmental problems and energy ***,the low surface charge density limits the photocatalytic conversion performance of CO_(2).Herein,a polymeric carbon nitride(PCN)photocatalyst with Zn single atoms(Zn1/CN)was designed and synthesized for CO_(2) *** results of the CO_(2) photoreduction studies show that the CO and CH_(4) yields of Zn1/CN increased fivefold,reaching 76.9 and 22.9μmol/(g·h),respectively,in contrast to the unmodified ***+plasma-etched X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation-based X-ray absorption fine structure results reveal that Zn single atom is mainly present in the interlayer space of PCN in the Zn–N_(4) *** characterizations indicate that the interlayer Zn–N_(4) configuration can amplify light absorption and establish an interlayer charge transfer ***-assisted Kelvin probe force microscopy confirms that more photogenerated electrons are delivered to the catalyst surface through interlayer Zn–N_(4) configuration,which increases its surface charge ***,in-situ infrared spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculation reveals that promoted surface charge density accelerates key intermediates(*COOH)conversion,thus achieving efficient CO_(2) *** work elucidates the role of internal single atoms in catalytic surface reactions,which provides important implications for the design of single-atom catalysts.

Potassium isotopes are a novel tracer for continental *** K isotope studies on chemical weathering generally targeted weathering profiles under a particular climate region,yet the effects of chemical weathering on K isotopes under different climatic backgrounds remain ***,little is known about the K isotope signatures of modern unconsolidated detrital ***,we report K isotopic data of surficial seafloor sediments from continental shelves along the east coast of China(ECC),as well as those around the tropical Hainan island in the northern South China *** ECC sediments have a relatively narrow distribution ofδ^(41)K(with reference to NIST3141a)values,which range from(-0.40±0.01)‰to(-0.57±0.04)‰,with an average of(-0.51±0.09)‰.By contrast,δ^(41)K values of Hainan offshore sediments display a larger variation,ranging from(-0.28±0.07)‰to(-0.67±0.02)‰.Theδ^(41)K values of Hainan offshore sediments exhibit negative correlations with the chemical index of alteration(CIA),Al/K,Ti/K,and total iron(FeT),which underlines the control of chemical weathering on K isotopic signatures of detritus inputs into *** also measured Mg isotope compositions for the same samples;interestingly,the variability inδ^(26)Mg of the samples is small(~0.24‰)for all ECC and Hainan offshore sediments,andδ^(26)Mg values do not show clear correlations with indexes of chemical *** study demonstrates the link between K isotopic variability of detrital sediments and climatic conditions including rainfall intensity,which indicates that K isotopes of the detrital component of marine sediments could be applied to study Earth’s climate in deep ***δ^(41)K values of the offshore detrital sediments are significantly less variable than those of pelagic marine sediments,highlighting the importance of distinguishing the effects of diagenesis and neoformation of clay minerals from continental weathering in attempts to study deep-time climate-weathering

High-resolution recognition of FOAM modes via an improved EfficientNet V2 based convolutional neural network

Vortex beam with fractional orbital angular momentum (FOAM) is the excellent candidate for improving the capacity of free-space optical (FSO) communication system due to its infinite modes. Therefore, the recognition of FOAM modes with higher resolution is always of great concern. In this work, through an improved EfficientNetV2 based convolutional neural network (CNN), we experimentally achieve the implementation of the recognition of FOAM modes with a resolution as high as 0.001. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time this high resolution has been achieved. Under the strong atmospheric turbulence (AT) (C_(n)^(2)=10^(-15)m^(-2/3)), the recognition accuracy of FOAM modes at 0.1 and 0.01 resolution with our model is up to 99.12% and 92.24% for a long transmission distance of 2000 m. Even for the resolution at 0.001, the recognition accuracy can still remain at 78.77%. This work provides an effective method for the recognition of FOAM modes, which may largely improve the channel capacity of the free-space optical communication.

DAPK2 promotes autophagy to accelerate the progression of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament through the mTORC1 complex

Background: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a prevalent condition in orthopedics. While death-associated protein kinase 2 (DAPK2) is known to play roles in cellular apoptosis and autophagy, its specific contributions to the advancement of OPLL are not well understood. Methods: Ligament fibroblasts were harvested from patients diagnosed with OPLL. Techniques such as real-time reverse transcriptasepolymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot analysis were employed to assess DAPK2 levels in both ligament tissues and cultured fibroblasts. The extent of osteogenic differentiation in these cells was evaluated using an alizarin red S (ARS) staining. Additionally, the expression of ossification markers and autophagy markers was quantified. The autophagic activity was further analyzed through LC3 immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). An in vivo heterotopic bone formation assay was conducted in mice to assess the role of DAPK2 in ossification. Results: Elevated DAPK2 expression was confirmed in both OPLL patient tissues and derived fibroblasts, in contrast to non-OPLL controls. Silencing of DAPK2 significantly curtailed osteogenic differentiation and autophagy in these fibroblasts, evidenced by decreased levels of LC3, and Beclin1, and reduced autophagosome formation. Additionally, DAPK2 was found to inhibit the mechanistic target of the rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) complex's activity. In vivo studies demonstrated that DAPK2 facilitates ossification, and this effect could be counteracted by the mTORC1 inhibitor rapamycin. Conclusion: DAPK2 enhances autophagy and osteogenic processes in OPLL through modulation of the mTORC1 pathway.
