Extraction behaviours of titanium and other impurities in the decomposition process of ilmenite by highly concentrated KOH solution

To effectively utilize ilmenite and recycle KOH solution, the extraction behaviours of titanium and other associated impurities in the decomposition process of ilmenite by highly concentrated KOH solution were studied. Experiments on the extraction behaviours of tita- nium as well as other associated impurities of ilmenite such as iron, silicon, calcium, and aluminium were carried out. The effects of various parameters, including reaction temperature, KOH concentration, reaction time, alkali-to-ore mass ratio, and particle size on the extraction rate of titanium and other impurities were examined. When the finely ground ore （58-75 ~tm） reacted with KOH solution （80wt%） in an al- kali-to-ore mass ratio of 7：1 at 260~C for 60 min, almost complete extraction of titanium was achieved, while the extraction rate of aluminium was 78% and that of other impurities was less than 22%. Moreover, high purity （98.2wt%） TiO2 with the anatase structure could be gained in the purification process.

Betavoltaic nuclear batteries offer a promising alternative energy source that harnesses the power of beta particles emitted by *** satisfy the power demands of microelectromechanical systems(MEMS),3D structures have been proposed as a potential ***,this paper introduces a novel 3D^(63)Ni–SiC-based P^(+)PNN^(+)structure with a multi-groove design,avoiding the need for PN junctions on the inner surface,and thus reducing leakage current and power *** Carlo simulations were performed considering the fully coupled physical model to extend the electron–hole pair generation rate to a 3D structure,enabling the efficient design and development of betavoltaic batteries with complex 3D *** a result,the proposed model produces the significantly higher maximum output power density of 19.74μW/cm^(2) and corresponding short-circuit current,open-circuit voltage,and conversion efficiency of 8.57μA/cm^(2),2.45 V,and4.58%,respectively,compared with conventional planar *** analysis of the carrier transport and collection characteristics using the COMSOL Multiphysics code,we provide deep insights regarding power increase,and elucidate the discrepancies between the ideal and simulated performances of betavoltaic *** work offers a promising approach for the design and optimization of high-output betavoltaic nuclear batteries with a unique 3D design,and serves as a valuable reference for future device fabrication.

As a complex wall system in flowering plants, the pollen outer wall mainly contains aliphatic sporopollenin; however, the mechanism for synthesizing these lipidic precursors during pollen development remains less well understood. Here, we report on the function of the rice tapetum-expressing TDR （Tapetum Degeneration Retardation） gene in aliphatic metabolism and its regulatory role during rice pollen development. The observations of transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and scanning electron microscopy （SEM） analyses suggested that pollen wall formation was significantly altered in the tdr mutant. The contents of aliphatic compositions of anther were greatly changed in the tdr mutant revealed by GC-MS （gas chromatography-mass spectrometry） testing, particularly less accumulated in fatty acids, primary alcohols, alkanes and alkenes, and an abnormal increase in secondary alcohols with carbon lengths from C29 to C3S in tdr. Microarray data revealed that a group of genes putatively involved in lipid transport and metabolism were significantly altered in the tdr mutant, indicating the critical role of TDR in the formation of the pollen wall. Also, a wide range of genes （236 in total--154 up-regulated and 82 down-regulated） exhibited statistically significant expressional differences between wild-type and tdr. In addition to its function in promoting tapetum PCD, TDR possibly plays crucial regulatory roles in several basic biological processes during rice pollen development.

A 4H–SiC–^(63)Ni p–n-junction-based betavoltaic battery is investigated. The Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the self-absorption effect of the ^(63)Ni source, the backscattering process, and the transport of beta particles in 4H–SiC material. The main factors that affect the energy conversion efficiencies of the cell are analyzed. Based on the simulation results, it can be calculated that, when the thickness of the ^(63)Ni source increases from 2 ×10^(-3) to10 lm, the theoretical maximum device conversion efficiency increases from 16.77 to 23:51% and the total conversion efficiency decreases from 16.73 to 1:48%.Furthermore, a feasible design with a maximum output power density of 0:36 μW=cm^2 and an optimal device conversion efficiency of 23:5% is obtained.

Third-generation-semiconductor zinc oxide is utilized as an energy converting material in a betavoltaic battery, where 0.06 Ci^(63) Ni and 8 Ci^(147) Pm are used as the beta sources. Based on a Monte Carlo simulation, the full scales of the devices are derived as 17 and 118 lm,respectively, for both sources. The influences of semiconductor doping concentrations on the electrical properties of the devices are analyzed. For a typical doping concentration N_A= 10^(17) cm^(-3), N_D= 10^(16) cm^(-3), the conversion efficiencies are 7.177% and 1.658%, respectively, using63 Ni and147 Pm sources. The calculation results of energy deposition in materials for the two sources show that the doping concentrations drop to 1 × 10^(13)–5×10^(14) cm^(-3) and 1 × 10^(12)–5×10^(13), and accordingly, the energy conversion efficiencies rise to 14.212% and 18.359%, respectively.

The 2.6-3.8 GHz, 4.5-7.5 GHz, 5.2-7.6 GHz and 0.7-1.5 GHz componentspectrometers of Solar Broadband Radio Spectrometer (SBRS) started routine observations,respectively, in late August 1996, August 1999, August 1999, and June 2000. They just managed tocatch the coming 23rd solar active maximum. Consequently, a large amount of microwave burst datawith high temporal and high spectral resolution and high sensitivity were obtained. A variety offine structures (FS) superimposed on microwave bursts have been found. Some of them are known, suchas microwave type Ⅲ bursts, microwave spike emission, but these were observed with more detail;some are new. Reported for the first time here are microwave type U bursts with similar spectralmorphology to those in decimetric and metric wavelengths, and with outstanding characteristics suchas very short durations (tens to hundreds ms), narrow bandwidths, higher frequency drift rates andhigher degrees of polarization. Type N and type M bursts were also observed. Detailed zebra patternand fiber bursts at the high frequency were found. Drifting pulsation structure (DPS) phenomenaclosely associated with CME are considered to manifest the initial phase of the CME, andquasi-periodic pulsation with periods of tens ms have been recorded. Microwave 'patches', unlikethose reported previously, were observed with very short durations (about 300 ms), very high fluxdensities (up to 1000 sfu), very high polarization (about 100% RCP), extremely narrow bandwidths(about 5%), and very high spectral indexes. These cannot be interpreted with the gyrosynchrotronprocess. A superfine structure in the form of microwave FS (ZPS, type U), consisting of microwavemillisecond spike emission (MMS), was also found.

Simulating robust far-field coupling to traveling waves in large three-dimensional nanostructured high-Q microresonators

Ultra-high quality(Q) whispering gallery mode(WGM) microtoroid optical resonators have demonstrated highly sensitive biomolecular detection down to the single molecule limit;however, the lack of a robust coupling method has prevented their widespread adoption outside the laboratory. We demonstrate through simulation that a phased array of nanorods can enable free-space coupling of light both into and out of a microtoroid while maintaining a high Q. To simulate large nanostructured WGM resonators, we developed a new approach known as FloWBEM,which is an efficient and compact 3D wedge model with custom boundary conditions that accurately simulate the resonant Fano interference between the traveling WGM waves and a nanorod array. Depending on the excitation conditions, we find loaded Q factors of the driven system as high as 2.1 × 10~7 and signal-to-background ratios as high as 3.86%, greater than the noise levels of many commercial detectors. These results can drive future experimental implementation.
